Helldivers 2’s PC installation was reduced from approximately 154GB to approximately 23GB—a saving of about 131GB, or 85%. Arrowhead achieved the reduction primarily by removing duplicated game data originally included to help mechanical hard drives, with assistance from Nixxes Software.
The slim build was first introduced as a Steam technical beta on December 2, 2025. The result is not an 85% compression of the game, nor does it mean that 85% of its playable content disappeared. It is a smaller data layout with the same reported game content, although HDD users may see somewhat longer loading times.
The short version
- The old PC installation occupied roughly 154GB.
- The slim build occupied approximately 23GB.
- That is a saving of about 131GB, or approximately 85%.
- The main technique was de-duplication: removing repeated copies of the same or equivalent assets.
- Arrowhead worked with Nixxes Software, the PlayStation-owned studio known for PC versions and porting work.
- SSD users are the clearest beneficiaries. HDD users save space but may wait a few extra seconds in the worst cases.
Arrowhead’s original concern was that removing the duplication could make HDD loading up to ten times slower. After collecting Helldivers 2-specific data, the studio said the practical impact was much smaller: roughly 11% of active players were using mechanical hard drives during the measured week, and the worst cases involved only a few additional seconds of loading.
Why was the original PC build so large?
The extra data was primarily an old-fashioned storage optimization rather than a mountain of unique visual content. Arrowhead explained that the PC version was roughly three times larger than the console installation because files had been duplicated to reduce the impact of mechanical hard-drive seek times.

A conventional HDD stores data on spinning platters. Its read head must physically move between locations, so fetching many small assets scattered across the drive can be slow. Developers can reduce those movements by placing duplicate copies of frequently used files near the data that needs them.
For example, a texture used by a tree or a sound effect may appear in multiple physical locations in the game’s data layout. That consumes more capacity, but it can allow an HDD to read the required material with fewer long seeks.
SSDs work differently. They have no spinning platters or moving read head, and random access is substantially less costly. Duplicating files can still have engineering uses in some circumstances, but the particular capacity-for-loading trade-off is far less attractive than it was for HDD-first PC configurations.
In effect, the old build retained an optimization for mechanical drives even as SSDs became increasingly common among PC players. Arrowhead’s later player data gave the studio more confidence that it could remove much of that overhead.

De-duplication is not the same as compression
The 85% figure is easy to misunderstand. Arrowhead did not claim that it compressed every asset to one-sixth of its former size, and it did not remove 85% of the game’s unique content.
De-duplication removes redundant copies. If the same asset was stored several times for storage-locality reasons, one shared copy can replace those repetitions. The game can still use the same underlying content; it simply no longer needs to carry every duplicate on the drive.
That distinction explains how the installation could become dramatically smaller without turning into a low-quality or stripped-down edition. The change was aimed at the arrangement of the files, not at deleting missions, enemies, environments, or visual features.

What happened to the feared HDD performance penalty?
Arrowhead initially warned that eliminating duplication might make HDD loading times up to ten times worse. That was a cautious estimate based on broader industry data and comparisons, not a definitive measurement of the finished Helldivers 2 slim build.
The studio subsequently gathered game-specific information. It reported that around 11% of active players were using mechanical HDDs during the relevant week. More importantly, it found that loading in Helldivers 2 is not determined solely by how quickly assets arrive from storage.

Level generation is a major part of the process and runs in parallel with asset loading. Because that work can dominate the wait, removing duplicated assets did not translate into the dramatic tenfold delay Arrowhead had initially feared. The studio described the worst-case HDD effect as only a few additional seconds.
That does not mean every HDD, PC configuration, or mission will behave identically. Drive health, CPU performance, memory, background activity, and network or multiplayer synchronization can all affect the experience. It does mean that “HDD loading is now ten times slower” is not an accurate description of the reported final result.
What did Nixxes contribute?
Arrowhead credited Nixxes Software with helping bring the reduction forward sooner than expected. Nixxes has extensive experience working on PC versions of PlayStation titles, making its involvement relevant to platform-specific storage layouts and build engineering.
The available reporting does not provide a detailed breakdown of which tools, engineers, or individual code changes Nixxes supplied. The supported claim is that Nixxes assisted Arrowhead with the de-duplication work—not that Nixxes independently rebuilt or fully ported Helldivers 2.
The announcement and reported figures were covered by Tom’s Hardware, while the canonical Steam announcement is available through Steam.

Does the slim build change gameplay or graphics?
There was no reported reduction in gameplay content or visual quality. The slim version was intended to retain the same game while changing how its data was stored.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe principal trade-off is loading behavior:
| Storage device | Likely effect |
|---|---|
| SSD | Recovers most of the storage space; no reported gameplay-content reduction. Loading still depends on the rest of the PC and the game’s level-generation process. |
| HDD | Recovers substantial capacity but may add a few seconds to loading in the worst cases, according to Arrowhead. |
| Mixed squad | A slower-loading player can still affect when the squad enters a mission, which was part of Arrowhead’s original concern. |
“No functional difference” should therefore not be interpreted as a guarantee of identical loading times on every system. The reported difference is primarily storage-related for SSD users and loading-related for HDD users.
How the December 2025 Steam beta worked
When the reduction launched as a technical beta on December 2, 2025, players could opt in through Steam’s beta controls:
- Open the Steam Library.
- Right-click HELLDIVERS 2.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Betas tab.
- Choose
prod_slimfrom the Beta Participation menu. - Close the window and allow Steam to download or update the slim build.
Important: those are historical beta instructions, not a guarantee that the branch is still available or still required. Arrowhead presented prod_slim as an opt-in technical branch and intended to make the slim version the default after testing, while retaining a legacy version temporarily. Steam’s current Betas menu is the authoritative place to determine whether that branch remains visible and whether an existing installation needs any action.
Why Steam still lists 135GB
Steam’s store page currently lists 135GB of minimum storage, 40GB recommended storage, and an SSD recommendation. That appears inconsistent with the approximately 23GB slim installation, but the figures describe different things.

The 23GB number refers to the approximate installed footprint of the slim build. Steam’s “available space” requirement may include temporary room needed for installation, patching, file replacement, or legacy store metadata that has not caught up with the technical change. A large update may also need staging space even when the final installation is much smaller.
For that reason, do not assume that having exactly 23GB free guarantees a successful installation or update. Leave additional working space where possible, and treat Steam’s displayed requirement as the safer constraint until the platform listing and installation behavior agree.
You can see the current store metadata on the official Steam page.
What this means if you are deciding whether to reinstall
- Using an SSD: The slim build makes reinstalling far more practical if the old 154GB footprint was the obstacle. The main benefit is capacity, not a promised universal loading-time increase.
- Using an HDD: You still save a large amount of disk space, but you may trade that for somewhat longer mission-entry loading. Arrowhead’s later estimate suggests seconds, not the initially feared tenfold increase.
- Short on free space: The slim installation may fit where the old one did not, but reserve more than 23GB for Steam’s installation and patching process.
- Still on a legacy branch: If Steam offers one, it may suit a player who prioritizes the shortest possible HDD asset-loading times. However, maintaining separate builds creates testing and support overhead, which is why Arrowhead intended the legacy version to be temporary.
The broader lesson for PC game storage
Helldivers 2 demonstrates how a PC game can carry enormous storage overhead for a hardware configuration that no longer represents most of its active audience. Duplicating assets was once a sensible way to make random access on hard drives less painful. As SSD adoption increased, the same decision became a major capacity cost.

Arrowhead first had to establish how many players still used HDDs, understand what actually dominated loading time, and measure the effect in this specific game. That replaced a broad worst-case assumption with a more useful player-based result.
The outcome is an unusually large storage reduction without a reported loss of content. For SSD users, it is primarily a free capacity win. For HDD users, it is a choice between that capacity saving and a modest potential loading penalty. In either case, the 85% number describes removed redundancy—not compressed or deleted gameplay.
