Xbox Cloud Gaming Now Supports Up to 1440p Streaming on Xbox Consoles

Microsoft is rolling out up-to-1440p, higher-bitrate Xbox Cloud Gaming on Series X|S, Xbox One X, and Xbox One S—but it is not a guaranteed 1440p/60fps stream.

Microsoft is rolling out cloud streaming at up to 1440p with higher bitrates on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X, and Xbox One S consoles. The upgrade is for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members and depends on supported games, regions, rollout status, and network conditions. It does not make every game a guaranteed 1440p or 60fps stream, and it does not change the consoles’ native rendering hardware.

Microsoft announced the change on February 25, 2026. Read the Xbox Wire announcement.

What the 1440p Xbox Cloud Gaming upgrade changes

This is a video-streaming upgrade, not a console graphics upgrade. In Cloud Gaming, the game runs on Microsoft’s servers and your Xbox receives an interactive video stream. Microsoft is increasing the maximum announced stream output to 1440p, or 2560×1440, while also using higher-bitrate streaming for eligible users.

Higher resolution can make text, menus, distant details, and fine image elements look sharper. A higher bitrate can also reduce visible compression, especially in scenes with foliage, particles, fast camera movement, or dark gradients. Microsoft has not published a separate bitrate figure for console streaming, so there is no reliable number to quote.

  • FOUR GENERATIONS OF GAMES — Play thousands of games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX, with many titles enhanced for better visuals and performance on XBOX Series X.

The important qualification is “up to.” The announcement does not promise that every game will stream at 2560×1440, nor that every stream will run at 60 frames per second. Resolution and frame rate can vary by title, server, device, region, connection quality, and service availability.

Which Xbox consoles support 1440p cloud streaming?

Microsoft’s announcement names these consoles:

  • Xbox Series X
  • Xbox Series S
  • Xbox One X
  • Xbox One S

The original Xbox One is not listed in the announcement’s supported-console sentence. Do not assume that every Xbox One model receives this specific 1440p streaming upgrade unless Microsoft later confirms it.

The inclusion of Xbox One S and Xbox One X is particularly useful for owners who want to play newer, cloud-enabled games without downloading them or replacing their console. However, owning one of the named consoles does not guarantee a 1440p stream in every game.

Do you need Game Pass Ultimate?

For the announced higher-quality console streaming benefit, Microsoft specifically identifies Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members.

Xbox’s broader Cloud Gaming information also lists cloud gaming access through Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, or Essential. That does not confirm that Premium or Essential receive the same up-to-1440p, higher-bitrate quality tier. The 1440p announcement attributes this upgrade to Ultimate members.

Cloud access also depends on the game. Some titles are included in the Game Pass catalog, while Microsoft separately supports streaming select games that users own or purchase outside the catalog. That does not mean every digitally owned Xbox game can be streamed.

Microsoft’s Cloud Gaming page is the appropriate place to check current plan, title, device, and regional availability. Prices and benefits can vary by country and change over time.

Does every cloud game stream at 1440p?

No universal 1440p guarantee has been announced. Microsoft describes the feature as streaming at up to 1440p for supported titles and regions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That wording leaves several possible limits:

  • A particular game may use a lower stream resolution.
  • The feature may not yet be available in every region.
  • Server capacity or rollout status may affect availability.
  • A weak or unstable connection may cause the stream to reduce quality.
  • The receiving device or display may not show the full 1440p image.

A 1440p stream also does not prove that the game is internally rendered at 1440p on Microsoft’s cloud hardware. The stream’s output resolution and the game’s internal rendering resolution are separate technical details.

Is 1440p the same as 2K?

Use 1440p or 2560×1440 for precision. “2K” is often used casually to describe 1440p, but the term is technically imprecise and can refer to different resolutions depending on context.

Will Xbox Cloud Gaming run at 1440p and 60fps?

Not necessarily. Microsoft’s announcement confirms the higher resolution ceiling and higher-bitrate streaming, but it does not promise universal 1440p/60fps streaming.

Frame rate remains title- and service-dependent unless Xbox specifies otherwise for a particular game. Some games may deliver a smoother stream at a lower resolution, while others may be constrained by how the title runs on the cloud hardware or by network conditions.

Variable-refresh displays may make supported output appear smoother, but they cannot remove cloud-network latency or force a particular resolution or frame rate.

What you need for the best result

Microsoft lists a 10 Mbps minimum download speed for cloud gaming generally. Its guidance gives 20 Mbps as a best-performance figure for consoles, PCs, and tablets, and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. The minimum is not a guarantee of stable gameplay: latency, jitter, packet loss, wireless interference, congestion, and distance from the serving region also matter.

Recommended setup checklist

  • Game Pass: Use an active Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription for the announced 1440p console benefit.
  • Supported title: Confirm that the game supports Cloud Gaming in your region.
  • Internet: Aim for at least Microsoft’s 20 Mbps best-performance guidance, with low latency and minimal packet loss.
  • Connection: Use Ethernet where practical. If using Wi-Fi, 5 GHz is generally preferable to a congested 2.4 GHz network, provided the console is close enough to the router.
  • Controller: Use a compatible controller connected through the supported wired or wireless method.
  • Display: A 1440p monitor is the clearest way to see the resolution benefit. A 4K television can upscale the image, while a 1080p display cannot show the full 1440p output.
  • Console software: Install pending system updates and restart the console before judging availability.

A speed test alone is not enough. A household connection can exceed 20 Mbps while cloud gaming still performs poorly if other devices are saturating the network or the route to Microsoft’s servers has high latency.

How to access the feature on Xbox

Microsoft’s announcement confirms the upgrade but does not publish a verified console menu path or a manual “enable 1440p” switch. Eligible users should access cloud-playable games through the normal Xbox Cloud Gaming experience on a supported console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practice, sign in with the Ultimate account, ensure the console is updated, choose a cloud-playable title, and start cloud play where that option is offered. The quality upgrade may be controlled server-side rather than by a resolution preference in the dashboard. Changing the Xbox’s local display resolution should not be treated as a verified way to force a 1440p cloud stream.

What to do if the stream is still 1080p or lower

If the image does not appear to benefit from the upgrade, work through this checklist. These are practical troubleshooting steps, not an official 1440p activation procedure.

  1. Confirm that the console is signed into the account with the active Game Pass Ultimate subscription.
  2. Check that the game is cloud-playable and that Cloud Gaming is available for the title in your region.
  3. Install pending Xbox system updates and restart the console.
  4. Try another known cloud-playable game. A title-specific limitation may be the explanation.
  5. Use Ethernet temporarily to remove wireless interference as a variable.
  6. Reduce household network congestion, including large downloads, video streams, and backups.
  7. Check that the display accepts a 2560×1440 input. A 1080p screen cannot show the full resolution.
  8. Allow for server-side rollout or service limitations if the feature remains unavailable despite meeting the account and hardware requirements.

If the stream looks soft, blocky, or unstable, increasing the internet plan’s advertised speed may not solve the problem. Test latency, packet loss, router placement, Wi-Fi interference, and the console’s distance from the serving region as well.

1440p Cloud Gaming versus Remote Play

Feature Xbox Cloud Gaming Xbox Remote Play

Does this announcement apply? Yes, this is the announced feature No equivalent 1440p Remote Play upgrade is confirmed here

Remote Play is useful when you want to access games installed on your own Xbox. It is not the same service as Cloud Gaming and should not be presented as receiving this 1440p announcement.

How much difference will 1440p make?

The improvement depends heavily on the screen and viewing distance.

  • 1080p display: It cannot present the full 1440p image. Higher bitrate may still improve clarity, but the resolution benefit will be limited or invisible.
  • 1440p monitor: This is the most direct way to see the additional output resolution.
  • 4K television: The display may upscale the stream. It can look cleaner than a lower-quality stream, but this is not native 4K cloud gaming.
  • Large screen or close viewing distance: Compression and fine-detail improvements are more noticeable.

The upgrade can be especially useful when streaming a Series-generation game to an older Xbox One S or One X. It may also let you try a game immediately instead of waiting for a large download. It does not eliminate input latency, compression artifacts, queue or availability issues, or dependence on Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure.

Is Game Pass Ultimate worth it just for 1440p?

For most people, 1440p alone should not be the only reason to choose a subscription tier. Ultimate is a more convincing fit if you regularly use Cloud Gaming, own a 1440p monitor or 4K television, want to play supported Series-generation titles on older hardware, and have a stable low-latency connection.

The case is weaker if you play almost entirely installed games, use a 1080p screen, have unreliable broadband, or rarely use cloud streaming. Local play generally offers more consistent image quality and lower latency, but requires compatible hardware, storage, downloads, and a supported local version of the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s announcement makes the 1440p feature part of Ultimate rather than presenting it as a separate streaming purchase. Check the official Game Pass page for current regional plan details before subscribing; prices and plan benefits can change.

Bottom line

Xbox Cloud Gaming’s move to up to 1440p with higher bitrates is a meaningful quality upgrade for Ultimate subscribers using Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X, or Xbox One S. It can produce a sharper, cleaner stream and makes cloud access more attractive for older Xbox hardware.

It is not a guarantee of native 1440p rendering, 4K output, 60fps, or identical quality in every game and region. Your display, title eligibility, account tier, connection quality, and Microsoft’s rollout all determine what you actually receive.
