“The program can’t start because hpqunld.dll is missing from your computer.” This hpqunld.dll error can also appear as “was not found,” “could not be loaded,” or “there was a problem starting hpqunld.dll.”
The file is identified as “HpqUnld Module,” a third-party HP-related application component rather than a normal Windows system DLL. The exact HP product that installed it is not confirmed, so the safest repair is to identify the application named in the error and repair or reinstall that application from HP’s official software source.
Do not download an isolated copy of hpqunld.dll from a random DLL website. A replacement may contain malware, belong to a different release, use the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, or leave the real installation problem unresolved.

- The error began after uninstalling HP software: Look for an orphaned shortcut, startup entry, scheduled task, or remaining HP component.
- The file was removed by security software: Check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- The problem started after an HP driver or utility update: Install the package intended for the exact HP computer model and Windows architecture.
- The error appeared after cloning, restoring, disk cleanup, or a failed repair: Reinstall the affected HP software, then check the file path and application event logs.
- Several unrelated programs and Windows features are failing: Repair Windows components with DISM and System File Checker.
- The dialog points to a temporary or user-profile folder: Treat the file as suspicious and scan the computer instead of restoring it blindly.
The application named in the dialog is more useful than the DLL filename. Write it down before closing the message.
1. Identify the HP application that owns the file
The available file information identifies hpqunld.dll as part of HpqUnld Module, but it does not establish a specific HP product, version, size, installation directory, or architecture. Use these checks to find the actual owner.
Check the error dialog
Read the full message and note:
- The name of the application that will not start.
- The complete path, if Windows displays one.
- Whether the error appears immediately at sign-in or only when you open a particular program.
- Whether the problem affects one program or several.
A path inside a recognizable HP application folder supports the possibility of a damaged installation. A path under a temporary directory, Downloads, an unusual user-profile location, or an unfamiliar startup folder needs additional security checking.
Check installed applications
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for entries beginning with HP.
- Sort by installation date if the problem began recently.
- Look for the HP utility that matches the application named in the error.
- Open its menu and select Advanced options if that option exists.
Do not assume that every HP entry is responsible. The exact product remains unverified, so use the failing application, displayed path, and installation timing together.
Check a surviving copy
If another copy of the file exists, do not replace anything yet.
- Right-click
hpqunld.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and record the description.
- Open Digital Signatures, if present.
- Select a signature and choose Details.
- Confirm whether Windows reports that the signature is valid.
- Note the folder containing the file.
A valid signature in an expected HP application directory is useful evidence, but a filename alone does not prove authenticity. An unsigned copy in a temporary or unexpected location should be scanned.
2. Repair the affected HP application
Repair is the least disruptive fix when the correct HP program is still installed.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Find the HP application named by the error.
- Select its three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Wait for Windows to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the HP application again.
Repair normally keeps the application’s settings while replacing damaged program files. It may not be available for every HP package.

- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Download the matching HP software package from HP’s official Support drivers and software page, or from the exact model’s Software and Drivers page.
- Choose the package for the correct HP model and Windows version.
- Run the installer.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the application.
This is the primary fix for a missing application DLL. Installing DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++ at random is not a substitute for reinstalling the HP program that expects hpqunld.dll.
If the HP program no longer appears in Installed apps
An incomplete uninstall may have removed the DLL while leaving a shortcut or startup item that still tries to launch the application.
Check these locations:
- Task Manager → Startup apps
- Task Scheduler
- Shortcuts in the Start menu and desktop
- Other remaining HP entries in Installed apps
Remove an orphaned shortcut only if you no longer need the related HP software. If another HP application still depends on it, reinstall the required HP package instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove a legitimate application file after a detection or update.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Expand any entry referring to hpqunld.dll or the related HP application.
- Record the detection name and original file path.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of these conditions are satisfied:
- The file was in the expected HP installation directory.
- The related HP software is known and trusted.
- The file has a valid digital signature, if the package normally provides one.
- Windows Security identifies it as a mistaken detection or the file is confirmed by HP.
If any point is uncertain, do not restore the isolated file. Uninstall and reinstall the HP application from HP’s official package instead. Then run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
To run a scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
A copy found in a temporary folder, Downloads, or an unexpected startup location should be treated as potentially unsafe until scanned and verified.

4. Match the application and DLL architecture
Windows edition does not tell you whether the failing HP program needs a 32-bit or 64-bit DLL. A 32-bit HP application can require a 32-bit library on 64-bit Windows.
The folder names are also easy to misread:
System32normally contains 64-bit system binaries on 64-bit Windows.SysWOW64normally contains 32-bit system binaries on 64-bit Windows.
Do not copy hpqunld.dll into either folder based on guesswork. Application DLLs usually belong in the application’s own installation directory, and the installer decides where they go.

To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
To check the application’s architecture, use the application’s official installation package or a trusted file inspection tool. The correct repair is to install the matching HP package, not to place a downloaded DLL in System32 or SysWOW64.
5. Reinstall the HP driver or utility for the exact model
If the error began after a driver update, incomplete installation, device replacement, or Windows recovery, reinstall the HP package for the exact computer model.
- Find the computer’s model name:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Record the model information.
- Open HP’s official drivers and software support page.
- Enter the exact model.
- Select Windows 10 or Windows 11 as appropriate.
- Download the HP utility or driver associated with the failing device or application.
- Check whether the download matches your system architecture.
- Close the affected HP program.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application.
Do not use a package for a similar HP model. A wrong model package can leave the same missing-file error or create new driver problems.
When manually checking numerous model pages and driver releases is becoming guesswork, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the exact HP application remains the definitive fix when that application owns hpqunld.dll.
Use Device Manager only for the device problem
Device Manager can help when the affected HP software controls hardware, but it does not usually restore an application DLL by itself.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Printers, Imaging devices, Keyboards, or System devices.
- Right-click the affected HP device.
- Select Properties.
- Check the General tab for an error code.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver only with a verified HP package or Windows Update source.
- Restart Windows and test the HP application.
Do not uninstall a device driver simply because hpqunld.dll is missing unless the HP installation instructions specifically require it.
6. Repair Windows components when broader corruption is present
DISM and System File Checker are appropriate when multiple unrelated applications fail, Windows components behave abnormally, or other system files are reported as damaged. They are not the first fix for one missing HP application DLL.
Run DISM first.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Then run System File Checker in the same elevated Command Prompt:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows and test the HP application.
Microsoft’s official guidance covers System File Checker, and Microsoft documents DISM image repair.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and retest. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, repeat the process only after checking the DISM result and reviewing the application’s own repair or reinstall options.
If repeatedly hunting through Windows repair output is slowing you down, Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show system problems before any repair is applied; its free scan identifies issues, while repairs are handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the HP program remains the correct fix when the missing file belongs to that program.
7. Do not use regsvr32 unless the vendor requires it
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or ActiveX libraries. Most application DLLs are ordinary supporting files and do not need registration.
Running this command against hpqunld.dll is generally not a repair:

It may produce an entry-point or registration error, and it will not restore a missing dependency. Use it only when the original HP documentation explicitly identifies the DLL as a registration component and provides the correct command and path.
Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains the command’s intended use.
8. Check for a missing dependency
Sometimes Windows names hpqunld.dll even though the immediate problem is a dependency that hpqunld.dll itself cannot load.
If reinstalling the HP application does not help:
- Open Event Viewer from the Start menu.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
- Record the application name, faulting module, and error code.
- Compare those details with the HP installer and application logs.
A dependency-analysis tool can identify imported modules that are missing or incompatible. Use that result to install the runtime named by the analysis, rather than downloading a replacement DLL by filename. If the analysis identifies a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable information.
Recommended Free Tools
Windows Features are not normally relevant to hpqunld.dll. Do not enable random optional features as a repair. Enable a Windows feature only when the failing HP application’s documentation specifically requires it.
9. Try System Restore as a fallback
System Restore may help if the file disappeared immediately after a recent software removal, cleanup operation, or failed update and a suitable restore point exists.

- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can affect unrelated applications and does not replace a clean HP reinstall. Use it only after identifying a plausible recent change.
What success looks like
The repair worked when:
- The HP application opens without the hpqunld.dll message.
- The same device or utility functions normally.
- No new missing-DLL message appears.
- The application remains functional after a restart.
If the error returns only at sign-in, check startup entries and scheduled tasks. If it appears only for one Windows account, test the HP application under another account. A working second account points to damaged application-specific settings or a damaged user profile, not a reason to copy DLLs between profiles.

Frequently asked questions
Is hpqunld.dll a Windows system file?
Almost certainly not. Its name and the description “HpqUnld Module” indicate third-party HP-related software. It should not normally be treated as a Microsoft runtime or core Windows component.
Which HP product installed hpqunld.dll?
The available identification does not verify the exact HP product. Check the failing application, displayed path, installed HP applications, digital signature, and HP’s model-specific software catalogue before choosing a replacement package.
Is hpqunld.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
That is not established by the filename or by whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit. The calling application and the PE architecture of the installed file determine what is required.
Should I copy hpqunld.dll into System32?
No. The correct location depends on the HP application and installer. Copying a DLL into System32 or SysWOW64 can create an architecture mismatch and does not repair missing dependencies.
Will installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
Not usually. Those runtimes matter only if dependency analysis shows that the failing HP application needs one of them. The primary repair is to repair or reinstall the owning HP software.
Can I download hpqunld.dll separately?
Avoid isolated downloads from unofficial DLL repositories. The file may be malicious, mismatched, unsigned, or unrelated to the installed HP release. Use the HP application’s official installer instead.
Why does regsvr32 fail with this file?
Most application DLLs are not self-registering libraries. A registration error is expected when regsvr32 is used on an ordinary application module, and the command does not restore missing dependencies.
What if reinstalling the HP application does not work?
Check Windows Security Protection history, confirm the package matches the exact HP model and Windows architecture, inspect Event Viewer, and use dependency analysis to find a secondary missing module. Run DISM and SFC only when there is evidence of broader Windows corruption.
