apperrres.dll is an Autodesk application file, not a Windows system DLL. It belongs to the Autodesk Hardcopy Subsystem and is commonly associated with AutoCAD, DWG TrueView, and related Autodesk installations.
The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the exact Autodesk product named in the error path. Do not download a replacement copy and place it in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. That can introduce the wrong release, wrong architecture, or a tampered file without repairing the damaged Autodesk installation.
What is apperrres.dll?
The file is described as Autodesk Hardcopy Error-Handler Resource DLL. It is a resource and error-handling component supplied by Autodesk, Inc. as part of the Autodesk Hardcopy Subsystem.
Windows loads application DLLs from locations associated with the program being started. In a healthy Autodesk installation, apperrres.dll should normally be located inside that product’s installation directory, often beneath a language-specific folder such as en-US.

The filename alone does not identify the exact Autodesk product or release. AutoCAD, DWG TrueView, and other Autodesk products can have separate installation directories, and multiple Autodesk releases may coexist on one computer.
What the error usually means
You may see messages such as:
- “This application failed to start because apperrres.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because apperrres.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Failed to load apperrres.dll.”
- “Error loading apperrres.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The file apperrres.dll is missing or corrupt.”
- “This application was unable to start correctly.”
These messages are produced by the Windows loader or the application and can vary by product and language.
If the message says “The specified module could not be found”, the named file may not be the only problem. Windows can show that message when a dependency required by apperrres.dll is missing or unusable. Repairing the complete Autodesk installation is therefore more reliable than copying only one DLL.
Start by noting the exact program that failed. Was it AutoCAD, DWG TrueView, or another Autodesk application? Also record the complete path shown in the message. That path tells you which installation needs repair.
Fix 1: Repair the affected Autodesk product
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
Repair is the best first step when the file was removed, corrupted, or separated from the rest of the Autodesk installation.
On Windows 11
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find the affected Autodesk product, such as AutoCAD or DWG TrueView.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- If an Autodesk maintenance window appears, choose Repair.
- Follow the prompts until the operation finishes.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the same Autodesk application again.
On Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Apps, then Apps & features.
- Select the affected Autodesk product.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Uninstall.
- Select Repair when the Autodesk maintenance screen appears.
- Allow the process to restore the installation.
- Restart the computer and test the application.
You can also use the traditional Control Panel route:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the Autodesk product.
- Choose Uninstall/Change.
- Select Repair or Reinstall if available.
Repair should restore the files supplied with that product instead of replacing one DLL in isolation. If the repair option is unavailable, use the product’s official Autodesk installer and choose the reinstall path.
How to confirm the repair worked
The repair succeeded if the Autodesk program opens without the apperrres.dll message. You can also return to the full path from the original error and check whether a new apperrres.dll exists in that product directory.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe file being present is not enough by itself. The application must also load it successfully, and the file should belong to the same Autodesk release as the executable requesting it.
Fix 2: Reinstall the exact Autodesk product
Time needed: 20 to 60 minutes
Use a reinstall when repair fails, the installer is damaged, or the product uses a newer installation experience without a repair option.
- Close all Autodesk applications.
- Save any active drawings or projects.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the exact Autodesk product that failed.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from Autodesk’s official product or account area.
- Install the same product and release that was previously installed.
- Restart Windows again if the installer requests it.
- Open the application and test the operation that previously failed.
If you have several Autodesk products installed, do not remove all of them immediately. Identify the product from the error path first. For example, a path containing an AutoCAD directory should lead you to repair AutoCAD rather than DWG TrueView.
A clean uninstall may be necessary if remnants of an earlier installation prevent setup from completing. Use Autodesk’s documented removal procedure for the affected product, then reboot before reinstalling. Keep other Autodesk products installed unless the removal instructions specifically require broader cleanup.

If the installer restores the wrong file
Several Autodesk releases can coexist. A copy of apperrres.dll from an older DWG TrueView or AutoCAD installation may not match the executable currently being launched.
Do not copy a file from another Autodesk folder as a shortcut. Repair or reinstall the product whose executable and installation path appear in the error.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and protection history
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Security software may quarantine an application file after an update, incomplete installation, or change in detection rules. This is especially worth checking if the program worked previously and the file disappeared suddenly.
Windows Security steps
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
apperrres.dllor the Autodesk installation directory. - Expand the event and inspect the detected path.
- Do not restore the file automatically. First verify that the path belongs to the Autodesk product you installed.
- If the file is clearly from the expected Autodesk directory and the installation is trusted, follow Windows Security’s action options.
- If the detection is uncertain, leave the file quarantined and repair or reinstall Autodesk instead.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to copy a DLL from an unverified source. If the file is quarantined repeatedly, obtain a clean Autodesk installer and check the file’s digital signature after installation.

Fix 4: Run Windows component repair commands
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
apperrres.dll is not a protected Windows system file, so Windows repair commands will not normally recreate it. They are useful when other applications also show system-component errors, Windows servicing is damaged, or the Autodesk installer itself cannot run correctly.
Microsoft documents DISM and System File Checker for repairing Windows components and protected system resources.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Autodesk repair or reinstall.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows resources. Neither command is a substitute for restoring an Autodesk application file from the Autodesk installer.
If you want a guided way to identify common Windows problems instead of repeatedly running scans without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show detected issues in a free scan; repairing them requires the full version, and reinstalling the affected Autodesk product remains the definitive fix for this file.
If DISM reports that it cannot complete the operation, restart Windows and run the command again from an elevated Command Prompt. If it still fails, fix Windows servicing separately before attempting another Autodesk installation.
Fix 5: Check the file path, permissions, and authenticity
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
This step helps distinguish a missing file from a file that exists but cannot be loaded.
- Read the complete path in the error message.
- Open File Explorer and browse to that directory.
- Search for
apperrres.dll. - If it is absent, return to the Autodesk repair or reinstall steps.
- If it is present, right-click it and choose Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab if available.
- Confirm that the file is inside the expected Autodesk product directory, not a Windows system folder or an unrelated download location.
- Open the Details tab and check whether the description identifies the Autodesk Hardcopy Error-Handler Resource DLL.
- Retry the Autodesk program.
A present file does not prove that it is correct. If Windows reports that the file is “not designed to run on Windows”, suspect corruption, an architecture mismatch, or a replacement file from the wrong product release. Reinstall the owning Autodesk product rather than trying another downloaded copy.
If only one Windows user account experiences the failure, test the Autodesk program from another account. A profile-specific permissions or path problem may be involved. This test does not replace repair, but it can show whether the installation is globally damaged.
Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 10 minutes
A DLL must be compatible with the application loading it. Public records for apperrres.dll describe more than one Autodesk build, and architecture labels in download archives are not always reliable. The correct file is the one shipped with the exact Autodesk product and release.
Do not assume that:
- A 32-bit file can be used by a 64-bit Autodesk application.
- A 64-bit file can be used by a 32-bit application.
- A file from AutoCAD can replace the one used by DWG TrueView.
- A file from one release can replace the same-named file in another release.
To check the installed application:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the Autodesk product and note its exact name.
- Check the error path for the product directory.
- Check whether the application was installed under a product-specific directory rather than a generic Windows folder.
- Repair or reinstall that same product instead of selecting a DLL based only on its filename.
The usual location of a 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows does not make System32 or SysWOW64 a valid destination for this file. Those folders are not general-purpose storage locations for third-party application DLLs.
Fix 7: Reinstall runtimes only when the error identifies a dependency
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, and .NET are common Windows application dependencies, but there is no verified basis for treating any of them as the direct source of apperrres.dll.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not install a runtime simply because a DLL error appeared. First repair the Autodesk product.
Consider a runtime repair only if:
- The error names a specific runtime DLL.
- Autodesk setup reports a missing prerequisite.
- Other applications using the same runtime fail as well.
- Event Viewer identifies a dependency failure associated with the Autodesk executable.
If setup lists a required Microsoft component, install it from Microsoft’s official source or let the Autodesk installer repair it. Installing random runtime packages will not reliably restore apperrres.dll.
Fix 8: Check drivers only as a secondary Autodesk diagnostic
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
A graphics driver problem can cause Autodesk applications to behave incorrectly, but it is not a direct explanation for a missing Autodesk resource DLL. Use this step when AutoCAD or another Autodesk program also shows display failures, crashes, or rendering problems.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test the Autodesk application again.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the adapter’s Properties, choose the Driver tab, and select Roll Back Driver when that option is available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen checking several device manufacturers manually becomes tedious, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; the free scan identifies issues, while installing drivers requires the full version, and it should not replace reinstalling Autodesk when apperrres.dll is the actual failure.
Do not uninstall the display adapter merely to address this DLL error. Driver work is secondary unless there are independent graphics symptoms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. apperrres.dll is a resource and error-handler component, not normally a COM or ActiveX server.
Running this command is therefore unlikely to repair the problem:

regsvr32 apperrres.dll
It may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result does not mean Windows needs a different registration command.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically documents registration for the particular DLL. For apperrres.dll, repair or reinstall the Autodesk product instead.
Do not copy the file to System32 or SysWOW64
C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64 are not universal DLL repair folders. Putting apperrres.dll there can create confusion and still leave the Autodesk installation incomplete.
A manually downloaded file may have:
- The wrong Autodesk release
- The wrong architecture
- Missing dependencies
- Invalid or missing publisher information
- Modified or malicious contents
- Resources that do not match the requesting executable
The safe replacement source is the official Autodesk installer or a repair operation for the exact installed product. Manual extraction is appropriate only in controlled recovery or enterprise deployment when the file comes from verified installation media for the same product and release and is restored to its original Autodesk directory.

If reinstalling still does not fix the error
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm that you reinstalled the product named in the full error path.
- Restart Windows before testing again.
- Check antivirus quarantine and protection history.
- Verify that the restored file is inside the Autodesk product directory.
- Confirm that the file is signed or otherwise associated with the trusted Autodesk installation.
- Test the application from another Windows user account.
- Run DISM and SFC if other Windows components also behave incorrectly.
- Remove the affected Autodesk product again using Autodesk’s clean-uninstall guidance.
- Reboot and install a fresh copy from Autodesk.
If one Autodesk application fails while others work, repair that application first. A working AutoCAD installation does not prove that DWG TrueView or another Autodesk product has an intact copy of the file.
System Restore can be considered when the failure began immediately after a known system change, but it is not the primary fix for an Autodesk application DLL. Avoid restoring an unverified standalone file from a DLL download site.
Frequently asked questions
Is apperrres.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Autodesk’s Hardcopy Subsystem and is not normally supplied by Windows. There is no verified reason to place it in System32 or SysWOW64.
Which Autodesk products use it?
Public file records associate it with AutoCAD and DWG TrueView installations. The filename alone cannot identify the exact Autodesk product or release, so use the complete path in the error.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as the first response. Those components are not established as direct fixes for apperrres.dll. Repair the affected Autodesk product first, and install a runtime only if setup or the error identifies a specific missing dependency.
Can I download apperrres.dll safely?
A random DLL download is not a safe repair method. It may be the wrong release or architecture, lack a valid signature, contain unwanted code, or fail because another Autodesk dependency is damaged.
Why does the error say the module cannot be found when the file exists?
Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the file. Repair the complete Autodesk installation instead of replacing apperrres.dll again.
What does “not designed to run on Windows” mean?
It usually indicates corruption, an architecture mismatch, or a bad replacement file. Remove the suspect copy and reinstall the Autodesk product that owns it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does regsvr32 fix apperrres.dll?
Usually not. This resource DLL is not normally registered as a COM or ActiveX server. Use Autodesk repair or reinstall procedures.
Will SFC restore the file?
No. SFC checks protected Windows resources, while apperrres.dll belongs to Autodesk. SFC can help with separate Windows corruption that prevents setup from working, but the Autodesk installer must restore this application file.
What is the correct fix for a 32-bit or 64-bit mismatch?
Use the installer for the exact Autodesk product and release. Do not choose a DLL from an archive based on an architecture label or copy it between Autodesk installations.
In most cases, apperrres.dll errors are installation-integrity problems rather than missing Windows components. Identify the Autodesk product from the complete path, repair it first, and reinstall it when repair cannot restore the matching file.
