Before changing anything, record:
- Which program displays the error. Check the window title, shortcut, or Task Manager.
- When it appears: during Windows startup, when opening a legacy application, or while using an FTP feature.
- The complete message: “missing,” “not found,” “could not be loaded,” “invalid entry point,” or “cannot register” indicate different problems.
- The file path: if a copy of
nmftpsn.dllalready exists, right-click it, select Properties, and note its location. - Your Windows architecture: go to Settings > System > About and check System type.

What is nmftpsn.dll?
nmftpsn.dll is an old NetManage Inc. application component. Its internal name is commonly shown as NMFTPSN.DLL, and historical NetManage software used it to provide FTP functionality for the NetManage FTP ActiveX control.
The related ActiveX control was FTPCT.OCX. That control worked with other NetManage libraries, including NMOCOD.DLL and NMSCKN.DLL. The file also appears in file inventories for NetManage HostLink 97 and Chameleon UNIX Link.
This history matters because nmftpsn.dll is not a general Windows runtime. It is an application DLL that belongs with a particular legacy software installation. A current program that suddenly requests it may be an old business tool, communications package, FTP utility, or startup entry left behind after an incomplete uninstall.

Third-party catalogues commonly describe it as a 32-bit DLL, with a reported size of about 37 KB. They also report version details such as 6.2.11.94, although catalogue information is inconsistent. Verify the version, path, signature, and other files on your own computer rather than treating a catalogue entry as an installation requirement.
Is nmftpsn.dll part of Windows?
There is no evidence that nmftpsn.dll ships with Windows, Windows Update, Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET.
That means the following are usually not the correct first repair:
- Installing Visual C++ Redistributable packages at random.
- Installing DirectX again.
- Enabling unrelated Windows Features.
- Running Windows Update repeatedly.
- Copying the DLL into both
C:WindowsSystem32andC:WindowsSysWOW64.
Windows system folders are not a universal storage location for third-party DLLs. A legacy application may expect its private DLLs in its own installation folder, and its installer may also configure services, ActiveX controls, registry entries, and companion libraries.

Fix 1: Identify and repair the parent application
This is the most likely and safest fix.
Find the program that is requesting the DLL
If the error appears in a normal application window, note its title and executable name. If it appears during startup:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an entry related to NetManage, HostLink, Chameleon, FTP, communications software, or an old business application.
- Right-click a likely entry and select Open file location, if available.
- If necessary, disable the startup entry temporarily, restart, and confirm whether the message disappears.
Do not assume that the program named in the error is the owner of the DLL. A stale shortcut, scheduled task, service, or old startup command may be calling it after the original software was removed.
Repair from Windows settings
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the application that produces the error.
- Select the three-dot menu next to it, or select the application and choose Advanced options where available.
- Choose Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair is not available, open Control Panel:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the relevant NetManage or legacy application.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- Follow the original installer prompts.
A successful repair normally removes the error without requiring you to touch the DLL directly. If the program still fails, preserve its settings and data, then continue with a complete reinstall.
Reinstall the complete application
Use the original installation media, an internal software archive, or a legitimate installer maintained by the software owner or your organization. For HostLink, Chameleon, or software built around the NetManage FTP ActiveX control, reinstall the complete product and its components.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not replace only nmftpsn.dll. The application may also require FTPCT.OCX, other NetManage libraries, language resources, registry entries, or an exact matching version of the DLL.
After reinstalling:
- Restart Windows.
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties > Compatibility if the installer or application is old.
- Use compatibility settings only if the program’s documentation or your testing requires them.
- Start the application normally before trying Run as administrator.
- If elevated access is required, right-click the shortcut and select Run as administrator.
If the application works after reinstalling, the repair is complete. If the same message returns immediately, check the antivirus history and the application’s installation directory.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus software removed the file
Old, uncommon DLLs may be quarantined because they are obsolete, unsigned, or associated with software that is no longer widely distributed. A malicious file can also use the name nmftpsn.dll, so do not restore it solely because an application asks for it.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections around the time the error began.
- Expand any detection that names
nmftpsn.dllor the parent application.
Only restore or allow the file when all of these are true:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- You recognize the parent application.
- The file came from the original trusted installer.
- Its path matches the application directory.
- The detection is understood and has been reviewed by your administrator or security team.
- The complete application can be reinstalled from a trusted source.
If the file was found in a temporary folder, a download directory, or an unexpected Windows folder, leave it quarantined. Reinstall the parent application instead. If malware is suspected, run a full scan and do not restore the file.
Fix 3: Confirm the file path and architecture
A reported “missing DLL” may actually be a wrong-location or wrong-architecture problem.
Check the existing file
If the application directory contains nmftpsn.dll:
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the General tab and record the full location.
- Open Details and record the file description, company, and version.
- Open Digital Signatures, if that tab exists.
- Compare the result with the other DLLs installed beside the application.
The file’s name alone does not prove that it is genuine. A legitimate historical copy should have a plausible application path and consistent surrounding files. A copy in Downloads, a random temporary folder, or an unexpected system directory deserves additional scrutiny.
Understand 32-bit software on 64-bit Windows
Historical metadata commonly identifies nmftpsn.dll as 32-bit. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows through the WOW64 compatibility layer, but it still needs the correct 32-bit application components.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not move a 32-bit third-party DLL into System32 because the computer is 64-bit. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is primarily the native 64-bit system directory, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit Windows components. Neither folder is a general-purpose location for this NetManage application DLL.
The correct location is normally determined by the original application installer. If the application is installed under C:Program Files (x86), that is a useful clue that it is 32-bit, but it does not by itself identify the required DLL path.
Fix 4: Treat dependency errors differently
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that nmftpsn.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load one of its dependencies.
This can happen when:
- A related NetManage DLL was deleted.
- The application was partially uninstalled.
- The DLLs come from mismatched product versions.
- A required ActiveX component is missing.
- The application is too old for the current Windows environment.
- A replacement DLL came from an incompatible source.
The most reliable solution is a complete repair or reinstall of the parent application. Installing modern Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET packages is not justified merely because the error mentions a DLL. Install a runtime only when the application’s authentic documentation or installer specifically requires it.

Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs or ActiveX components that provide the required registration entry points, such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for installing or repairing every DLL.
There is no reliable evidence that standalone nmftpsn.dll should be registered independently. Historical NetManage component descriptions distinguish the support DLL from the FTP ActiveX control, FTPCT.OCX.
Do not make this your normal fix:
regsvr32 nmftpsn.dll
Do not add /u, /i, or registry-cleaning commands copied from an untrusted DLL site.
If the error specifically names FTPCT.OCX, use the original application installer or explicit product documentation. If the installer requires manual registration, use the correct regsvr32 copy for the component’s architecture and run the command from an elevated Command Prompt. A registration error does not prove that nmftpsn.dll is corrupt.
Fix 6: Check Windows Features only when the application requires one
Legacy applications sometimes depend on an optional Windows component, but nmftpsn.dll is not itself identified as a Windows Feature.
If the original application documentation specifically requires an optional component:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Optional features.
- Select More Windows features or Windows Features.
- Enable only the component named by the application documentation.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable legacy components blindly. A Windows Feature will not recreate a missing NetManage DLL or replace the original application’s FTP control.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components when other Windows files are also failing
DISM and SFC are useful when Windows itself is damaged, but they generally will not restore nmftpsn.dll because it is not identified as a Windows system file.
Use these commands if the DLL error appeared with broader symptoms such as broken Windows utilities, corrupted system components, failed updates, or multiple unrelated system-file errors.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the affected application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run the two commands again. If Windows Update cannot provide repair files, Microsoft documents using a matching repair source:

When you are repeatedly hunting through repair commands without knowing which Windows component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan that identifies reported issues; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the NetManage application remains the definitive fix for this app-specific DLL.
Fix 8: Update drivers only if the application has a wider hardware problem
A driver update is not a normal remedy for a missing NetManage DLL. Consider drivers only if the legacy application also communicates with specialized hardware, network adapters, or a vendor device and Device Manager shows a related problem.
To check:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Network adapters.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab and record the provider and version.
- Obtain an update from the hardware manufacturer or your organization’s approved source.
- Restart and test the application.
Do not install a driver merely because nmftpsn.dll is missing. If Device Manager is full of stale entries and you are manually checking versions one by one, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported driver issues; the free scan identifies findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. This is optional and does not replace reinstalling the NetManage application.
Fix 9: Use System Restore if the failure started after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the application worked recently and the error began after a driver installation, cleanup tool, software removal, or system change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, drivers, and settings without removing personal documents. It may not restore a complete third-party application, so repair or reinstall the parent program afterward if required.
Fix 10: Decide whether the application is too old
NetManage HostLink, Chameleon, and related FTP ActiveX software belong to an older software generation. Even if the DLL is restored correctly, the application may fail because it depends on obsolete ActiveX behavior, old installers, outdated encryption, or unsupported operating-system components.
If reinstalling does not help:
- Check whether your organization has a supported replacement.
- Preserve the application’s data and configuration.
- Test it in an isolated virtual machine with the operating system it was designed for.
- Avoid exposing obsolete FTP software directly to untrusted networks.
- Do not weaken Windows security globally just to make the application start.
Compatibility mode can help an installer or older interface, but it cannot guarantee that every obsolete dependency works on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Why downloading nmftpsn.dll is risky
Random DLL download sites are a poor repair source because the file may be:
- Malware renamed to match the missing DLL.
- A different NetManage version.
- The wrong architecture.
- Missing related libraries.
- Modified or unsigned.
- Intended for a different application build.
A copied file may make one error disappear while creating a version conflict or a security problem. The safe sources are the original application media, your organization’s verified software archive, or a legitimate installer maintained by the software owner or current maintainer. Microsoft does not distribute nmftpsn.dll as a Windows component.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If the original installer is unavailable
Do not keep replacing individual DLLs. First identify the program and determine whether its data can be exported.
Then check:
- Old installation media held by your organization.
- An approved enterprise software archive.
- A backup or disk image from a machine where the program still works.
- A supported replacement from the business application owner.
- A controlled virtual machine containing the legacy environment.
If a backup copy is used, restore the entire application installation rather than copying only nmftpsn.dll. Scan the restored media and verify its provenance before connecting the machine to a network.

Is nmftpsn.dll a Windows system file?
No evidence identifies it as a Windows system component. It is associated with old NetManage application software.
Is nmftpsn.dll related to FTPCT.OCX?
Yes. Historical NetManage component descriptions identify nmftpsn.dll as FTP support for the NetManage FTP ActiveX control and list FTPCT.OCX as the related control.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as a first response. There is no established connection between this file and those modern runtime packages. Repair the parent application and its complete component set first.
Should I copy the file to System32?
No. Use the location selected by the original installer. A third-party 32-bit DLL does not belong in a Windows system directory merely because Windows is 64-bit.

Not normally. regsvr32 is for self-registering components, and there is no reliable evidence that this support DLL should be registered independently. Follow the original installer’s instructions instead.
Why does Windows say the module cannot be found when the file exists?
A required dependency may be missing, the file may be in the wrong directory, or the application may be loading an incompatible copy.
Can I trust a file named nmftpsn.dll?
The filename is not proof of authenticity. Check its path, publisher information, signature, provenance, surrounding files, and antivirus results.
