wizset32.dll is a Microsoft Visual FoxPro Setup Wizard resource file, not a normal Windows system DLL. The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Visual FoxPro installation, the legacy application that includes it, or the incomplete setup package that is calling it.
What this file actually does
The file’s documented description is Microsoft Visual FoxPro Setup Wizard Resource DLL. It belongs to Microsoft Visual FoxPro and supports the 32-bit Setup Wizard used to create or run Visual FoxPro distribution packages.

Older Visual FoxPro distribution files place it under a path similar to:
VFPDistrib.SrcSetupSETUP32WIZSET32.DLL
That location is important. It shows that wizset32.dll is associated with Visual FoxPro setup tooling, not with the Windows operating system.

You should not normally expect to find it in either of these folders:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
A 64-bit edition of Windows can run 32-bit Visual FoxPro software, but that does not mean the file belongs in System32 or SysWOW64. The correct location is usually the Visual FoxPro installation directory or the setup directory of the legacy application that supplied it.
The file may be missing because:
- Visual FoxPro’s Setup Wizard component was never installed.
- The original Visual FoxPro installation was damaged.
- A legacy application’s installer is incomplete.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- The file was deleted during cleanup, migration, or manual maintenance.
- A dependency of the setup program is missing.
- A mismatched file from another Visual FoxPro release was copied into the installation.
The version and size are not universal. They can vary by Visual FoxPro release, language, and build, so do not use a single file size as proof that a replacement is correct.
Causes matched to the symptom

The file is not intended for COM registration | Close the message and do not register this resource DLL |
| SFC finds no problem | Windows is intact, but the application file is missing | Repair Visual FoxPro or the legacy application |
Fix 1: Repair the Visual FoxPro installation
Use this path when you are the developer or technician who installed Visual FoxPro and the error appears while opening the development environment or creating a setup project.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStep 1: Find the original installation media
Look for the original Visual FoxPro CD, mounted installer image, network installation folder, or a backed-up copy of the installation files.
Do not begin by downloading wizset32.dll from a file-indexing or DLL download sites page. A loose file may be the wrong release, language, architecture, or build, and it does not restore the rest of the Setup Wizard.
Step 2: Run Visual FoxPro Setup
- Sign in to Windows with an administrator account.
- Open the original Visual FoxPro installation media.
- Right-click
Setup.exe. - Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Custom, depending on the installer.
- Select Professional Applications if that category is shown.
- Select the Visual FoxPro Runtime and Setup Wizard components.
- Continue through the installer.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
Microsoft’s archived Visual FoxPro guidance specifically points to rerunning Setup, choosing a Custom installation, and selecting the Professional Applications and Visual FoxPro Runtime and Setup Wizard components when these files were not installed.
Step 3: Test the result
Open Visual FoxPro and repeat the action that originally produced the error, such as creating a setup project.
The repair worked if:
- Visual FoxPro opens without the missing-file message.
- The Setup Wizard starts.
- A test setup project can be created or compiled.
- The error no longer appears in the installer log.
If the same error remains, uninstalling and reinstalling the same Visual FoxPro release and language is more reliable than copying a file from another release.
To reinstall cleanly
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select Microsoft Visual FoxPro in the program list.
- Choose Uninstall or Change.
- If the installer offers Repair, try that first.
- Otherwise uninstall the damaged installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the original product again using Custom setup.
- Select the Setup Wizard and runtime components.
- Test the installation before restoring custom deployment files.
Visual FoxPro 9.0 reached the end of Microsoft extended support on January 14, 2015, so current Microsoft download pages do not necessarily provide the original full Visual FoxPro installer or every historical Setup Wizard file. Microsoft’s available Visual FoxPro packages include updates and redistributable documentation, but those downloads should not be treated as guaranteed replacements for wizset32.dll.
Fix 2: Reinstall the legacy application that reports the error
Use this fix when the error appears while installing or launching an old accounting, inventory, database, or business application built with Visual FoxPro.
The end user may not need Visual FoxPro installed separately. Some applications include the required runtime and setup files inside their own installer.
Remove the damaged application
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Find the application that displays the error.
- Select the three-dot menu in Windows 11, or select the application and choose Uninstall in Windows 10.
- Complete the uninstall process.
- Restart Windows.
If the application has its own uninstaller, use that instead of deleting its folder manually.
Install from a trusted original source
Use the application publisher’s original installation media, a verified company deployment share, or a backup known to contain the complete installer.
- Copy the installer to a local folder such as
C:Install. - Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup instructions.
- Allow the installer to install its bundled runtime files.
- Start the application after installation completes.
The repair worked if the application opens and the same operation no longer produces the wizset32.dll message.
If the installer itself fails with the message, the installation media may be incomplete. Contact the application publisher or the organization that supplied the software and request a rebuilt installer. Adding a loose DLL to the Windows directory is not a substitute for correcting the package.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check the application directory
If the program is already installed, right-click its shortcut and choose Open file location. Look for the application’s own installation directory and its setup or runtime subfolders.
Do not move wizset32.dll into System32 or SysWOW64 simply because Windows mentions a DLL. The calling program normally searches its own directory and the directories defined by its installation.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an old setup component, especially when the file comes from a decades-old installer.
Windows Security steps
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the result.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections for
wizset32.dll. - Expand the detection to view its original path and action.
- Do not restore the file unless it came from trusted, original Visual FoxPro or application installation media.
- If the file is known to be legitimate, follow your organization’s security policy before choosing Allow on device or Restore.
- Update Windows Security.
- Rescan the original installer before using it again.
Do not restore an unknown copy merely because its filename matches. Verify the source, the installation path, and the application that needs it.
Recommended Free Tools
If antivirus software repeatedly removes the file from a trusted installer, ask the software vendor or your security administrator to review the detection. The safer long-term solution is a corrected installer or a documented exclusion approved for that application, not a permanent exception for random DLL files.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is also damaged
wizset32.dll is an application-owned Visual FoxPro file, not a protected Windows component. SFC and DISM normally will not recreate it.
Run these tools when you also have broader Windows symptoms, such as damaged built-in applications, failed Windows updates, unexplained system errors, or corrupted protected files.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
A successful DISM operation reports that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that source files could not be found, do not assume that wizset32.dll is the source of the problem. Repair the Windows installation separately or use a properly matched Windows installation source.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Run System File Checker
After DISM finishes, use the same elevated Command Prompt:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: review the CBS log or continue with Windows repair procedures.
Even if SFC repairs files successfully, reinstall Visual FoxPro or the affected application if wizset32.dll is still missing.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and unclear. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows repair issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the Visual FoxPro application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the missing file.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is designed for self-registering DLLs, ActiveX controls, and other components that provide a registration entry point.
wizset32.dll is documented as a Visual FoxPro Setup Wizard resource DLL. It normally does not need COM registration.
If you already tried:
regsvr32 wizset32.dll
and received an error such as DllRegisterServer entry point was not found, that does not prove the file is corrupt. It generally means the file is not designed to register in that way.

Microsoft’s Regsvr32 documentation explains this distinction. Close the message and return to repairing the parent Visual FoxPro installation or application.
Fix 6: Check architecture and dependencies
The SETUP32 location identifies this as a 32-bit Setup Wizard component. A 32-bit Visual FoxPro application can run on 64-bit Windows, but every part of the installation must be compatible with that application.
Do not replace a missing file with one copied from a different Visual FoxPro generation. A Visual FoxPro 5 or 6 setup component should not automatically be replaced with a Visual FoxPro 9 file just because the filename is identical.
Also, The specified module could not be found can mean that a dependency of wizset32.dll is missing. The named file may exist while another required component does not. Reinstalling the complete parent package is safer than identifying and downloading individual dependencies.
Check whether Windows is 64-bit
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
On Windows 10, open Settings, select System, select About, and read System type.
This information helps explain why a 32-bit legacy application can run on a 64-bit system, but it does not tell you to copy the DLL into a Windows directory.
Fix 7: Update drivers only if a separate driver problem exists
Drivers are not the normal cause of a missing Visual FoxPro Setup Wizard resource. Do not use Device Manager as the primary repair for wizset32.dll.
If the same computer also has a separate hardware problem, update that driver independently:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, or Storage controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
If Windows cannot find a driver, obtain it from the computer or hardware manufacturer. Do not install a driver merely because the Visual FoxPro error mentions a DLL.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify which versions need attention; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and is unrelated to the definitive Visual FoxPro repair when wizset32.dll itself is missing.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Do not download a loose wizset32.dll
Random DLL download sites websites are risky because the file may contain malware, be altered, belong to another Visual FoxPro release, use the wrong architecture, or lack the dependencies required by the calling program.
A loose replacement also leaves the original problem unresolved. If the Setup Wizard was not installed, other files may be missing. If antivirus quarantined the file, the installer may need to be reviewed. If the application package is incomplete, only the publisher can provide the correct deployment files.
Use trusted original Visual FoxPro media, the application publisher’s installer, or Microsoft’s official Visual FoxPro documentation and download pages. Microsoft’s Visual FoxPro EULA and redistributable documentation explains distribution restrictions, but it is not a promise that a current download contains every historical Setup Wizard file.
If the error remains after reinstalling
Work through these checks in order.
Identify the program making the request
Look at the error window title and the shortcut used to launch the program. Right-click the shortcut, choose Properties, and inspect Target. This identifies the executable and usually reveals whether the request comes from Visual FoxPro itself or from a third-party application.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Inspect the installation folder
Use the executable’s location to determine whether the program has its own copy of Visual FoxPro setup files. Do not copy files between unrelated applications.
Review application and installer logs
Look in the application folder, %TEMP%, and the Windows Event Viewer for setup or application errors.
To open Event Viewer:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Review Application around the time of the failure.
A dependency error or architecture mismatch may provide a more useful clue than the original missing-file message.
Check whether the error occurs only during setup-project creation
If the error occurs only inside Visual FoxPro while building a deployment package, repair the Visual FoxPro development installation and ensure that the Setup Wizard components were selected.
If it occurs only when an end user installs a product, the end user may not need Visual FoxPro. The product’s publisher should correct the setup package.
Use System Restore only for a suitable application restore point
System Restore can help if a suitable restore point predates deletion and the file belonged to an installed application. It is not a replacement for reinstalling the parent product and does not guarantee that application data or setup files will be restored.
Frequently asked questions
Is wizset32.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is a Microsoft Visual FoxPro Setup Wizard resource DLL. It is not normally a component of Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Should I put it in System32?
Generally, no. The correct location is normally the Visual FoxPro installation directory or the legacy application’s own setup directory.
Should I put it in SysWOW64 because it is 32-bit?
No. SysWOW64 is not a general-purpose folder for third-party 32-bit DLLs. Let the original installer place the file where the application expects it.
Is it part of Visual C++ Redistributable?
No. Installing a modern Visual C++ Redistributable is not the primary remedy for this Visual FoxPro Setup Wizard file.
Will SFC restore it?
Normally, no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while wizset32.dll belongs to an application installation.
Do I need to register it?
Normally, no. It is a Setup Wizard resource DLL, not an ordinary COM or ActiveX component.
Can I use a Visual FoxPro 9 file to fix an older application?
Do not assume that is safe. Match the Visual FoxPro release, language, architecture, and application package. Reinstall the original product instead.
Why does the error say that a module could not be found when the file exists?
The message can refer to a dependency required by the DLL or calling program. Repairing the complete parent installation is safer than downloading individual dependencies.
Is Visual FoxPro still supported?
Microsoft lists Visual FoxPro 9.0 extended support as ending January 14, 2015. Older software can still run in some environments, but its installation media and compatibility should be treated as legacy. See Microsoft’s Visual FoxPro 9.0 lifecycle page.
What is the correct final fix?
Identify the program requesting wizset32.dll, then repair or reinstall that program from trusted original media. If you are using Visual FoxPro’s development tools, install the Runtime and Setup Wizard components through Custom Setup. If you are an end user installing a packaged application, ask the application publisher for a complete, corrected installer.
