isxdl.dll is the IS Download DLL, an optional plugin used by some Inno Setup installers and ISTool projects. It is not a Windows component, so downloading a replacement DLL or copying one into System32 is usually the wrong repair.
What this file actually does
isxdl.dll provides download functions that an installer can use to retrieve files during setup. It is associated with the IS Download DLL project developed by Bjørnar Henden and is commonly found in older installers built with Inno Setup or the related ISTool scripting environment.
A script may call the plugin with a declaration resembling:
external 'isxdl_DownloadFiles@files:isxdl.dll stdcall';
The files:isxdl.dll portion tells Inno Setup to extract the DLL from the installer’s embedded files before calling it. If the compiler did not package the file, or antivirus software removed it from the installer, setup can fail while extracting temporary files.

isxdl.dll is not:
- A Windows system DLL
- A Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX component
- A .NET Framework file
- A printer, graphics or motherboard driver
- A COM or ActiveX registration DLL in the normal use case
The file may be 32-bit because many programs and legacy installers that use it are 32-bit. A 32-bit application can require a 32-bit plugin even when it runs on 64-bit Windows.
Causes and symptoms
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
Setup stops with isxdl.dll was not found |
The installer was built without the embedded file or extraction failed | Download a complete installer from the original publisher |
An old installer reports that isxdl.dll is missing |
Damaged, incomplete or partially removed installer files | Replace the entire installer |
| The error appears after antivirus detection | The DLL was quarantined or deleted | Review Protection history before restoring anything |
| A developer sees the error while compiling or testing setup | The Inno Setup script references a file that is not packaged | Add the correct DLL to the embedded files or remove obsolete calls |
| The error appears after a disk cleanup | Temporary installer files were removed | Restart with a fresh installer |
isxdl.dll is present but setup still fails |
A dependency, version or architecture mismatch may exist | Use the original matching build and inspect dependencies |
| A program fails after copying a random DLL into a folder | The replacement is wrong, modified or incompatible | Remove it and reinstall the affected application |
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because isxdl.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting isxdl.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading isxdl.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because isxdl.dll was not found.”
- “isxdl.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
Internal error: ExtractTemporaryFile: The file "isxdl.dll" was not found.
The last message is especially useful because it points to an Inno Setup packaging or extraction problem. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency used by the DLL is missing, not necessarily that isxdl.dll itself is absent.
Fix 1: Replace the complete installer or application
This is the safest and most likely repair for an ordinary Windows user.
Do not begin by searching for the individual DLL. The installer may contain other files, scripts and dependencies that must match the same release. A loose replacement can make the error disappear while leaving the installer damaged or introducing an unsafe file.
If the error appears while installing a program
- Close the setup window.
- Delete or move the installer that produced the error. Keep it only if you need it for investigation.
- Open the software publisher’s official website using a trusted browser bookmark or a known support page.
- Download the installer again.
- If the publisher provides separate 32-bit and 64-bit downloads, choose the one intended for the program. Do not assume that 64-bit Windows requires every component to be 64-bit.
- Right-click the new installer and select Properties.
- On the Digital Signatures tab, review the signer if one is present.
- On the General tab, look for an Unblock option. Select it only when you trust the source, then select Apply.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation and restart the program.
A successful repair means setup completes without the isxdl.dll message and the installed program starts normally. If the new official installer produces the same error, the publisher may have distributed an incomplete package. Contact its support team or use a newer official release rather than adding a DLL manually.
If the error appears during a game installation
Use the launcher’s built-in repair process when available:
- Open the game launcher.
- Select the affected game.
- Open its settings or context menu.
- Choose Verify files, Repair, or the equivalent option.
- Wait for the scan and replacement process to finish.
- Restart the launcher and try the installation again.
If the launcher has no repair option, uninstall the incomplete game installation, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official launcher or store. Avoid copying isxdl.dll from another game because similarly named files are not automatically interchangeable.
If the error appears when starting an already-installed program
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair and test the program.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings.
- If neither option exists, uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Install a fresh copy from the original publisher.
When the affected software is an old portable program or installer, there may be no Windows repair button. In that case, replacing the entire program directory or obtaining a complete official package is safer than restoring one DLL.

Fix 2: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file
Antivirus software may remove a DLL from an old, unsigned or repackaged installer. That does not prove the detection is false. A filename and publisher name cannot establish that every copy is genuine.
To inspect the detection:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Select the detection related to the installer or
isxdl.dll. - Expand the entry and read the detection name, file path and action taken.
- Check whether the file came from the original software publisher or from an unofficial download.
- If the source is unknown, the file is unsigned, or the installer was obtained from a DLL-fixing site, leave it quarantined.
- Delete the unsafe installer and obtain a clean copy from the original publisher.
- Run a full scan from Virus & threat protection before trying again.
Restore a quarantined file only when you have verified the complete installer, its source and its authenticity. If the publisher provides a checksum or signature, compare it with the downloaded file using the publisher’s instructions. Do not disable antivirus protection simply to force an old installer to run.
If Windows Security repeatedly quarantines the file, stop restoring it. Scan the complete installer and seek a newer, clean package from the software publisher.
Fix 3: Repair an Inno Setup project
This section applies to developers or administrators who build the installer themselves.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →An Inno Setup script can reference isxdl.dll as an extracted temporary file. The compiled installer must contain the matching DLL in its embedded files. A declaration such as this does not automatically guarantee that the file has been packaged:
external 'isxdl_DownloadFiles@files:isxdl.dll stdcall';
Check the project as follows:
- Open the
.issscript in Inno Setup. - Search for
isxdl,isxdl.dll,isxdl_Download,isxdl_AddFileandisxdl_DownloadFiles. - Review the
[Files]section. - Confirm that the intended
isxdl.dllis included in the compiled installer. - Confirm that the packaged filename is exactly
isxdl.dll, including its extension and spelling. - Check that the external declaration uses the same filename.
- Confirm that the DLL matches the project’s expected exports and calling convention.
- Rebuild the installer.
- Test the rebuilt installer on a clean test machine or virtual machine.
- Inspect the temporary extraction stage and confirm that setup no longer reports
ExtractTemporaryFile.
Use the DLL supplied with the original project or a version explicitly compatible with it. Historical ISXDL builds are not necessarily interchangeable, and a newer public release is not automatically compatible with every old script.
If the project no longer needs download functionality, remove the obsolete isxdl declarations, download calls and associated temporary-file extraction steps. Then rebuild and test the installer again.
Do not package a DLL copied from an unrelated computer. The consuming script may depend on particular exports, a specific calling convention or a 32-bit build.

Fix 4: Check the application folder and architecture
Windows normally searches the application directory before system directories for an unpackaged desktop application. An application-specific DLL therefore normally belongs beside the executable that loads it, or inside the installer until the installer extracts it.
Do not copy isxdl.dll to either of these folders:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64
Despite the names, these directories are part of Windows’ shared DLL search paths. Adding a third-party installer plugin there can create version conflicts and DLL-preloading risks.
To check the program’s architecture:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and select Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if that column is available.
- Start the affected program and check whether Windows identifies it as 32-bit or 64-bit.
- If the program is 32-bit, use the matching 32-bit plugin supplied with that program or installer.
If the file is present beside the correct executable but the error remains, the loader may be unable to load one of its dependencies. Reinstall the complete application instead of moving the DLL between folders. For a developer build, inspect the executable and plugin with a trusted dependency-analysis tool and look for a missing secondary dependency.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. The normal ISXDL plugin use case does not make it a COM or ActiveX registration DLL.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Running this command is therefore not a standard repair:
regsvr32 isxdl.dll
It may produce an error stating that the required entry point is missing. That result does not repair the installer and does not prove that Windows is damaged.
Only use regsvr32 when the software publisher specifically instructs you to register a particular DLL and documents that the DLL supports registration. Do not register isxdl.dll merely because its filename ends in .dll.
Fix 6: Reinstall runtimes only when diagnostics identify one
Installing Visual C++ Redistributable packages, DirectX components or .NET is not a default solution for isxdl.dll. This file is an Inno Setup download plugin, not one of those runtimes.

Consider a runtime repair only when:
- The original publisher lists a runtime prerequisite.
- A dependency diagnostic identifies a missing runtime DLL.
- The application has other runtime-related errors.
- Reinstalling the complete official application does not restore its dependencies.
If a diagnostic reports a missing Microsoft runtime, download that runtime only from Microsoft and install the architecture required by the affected program. A 32-bit application may require the 32-bit runtime on 64-bit Windows.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components when broader corruption exists
Because isxdl.dll is third-party, System File Checker will not normally recreate it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows is also showing wider symptoms, such as damaged built-in apps, update failures or multiple missing Windows components.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the original installer or application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the affected program again. If both commands complete without resolving the error, replace the application or installer rather than repeatedly running the same scans.
If you want help identifying whether Windows components or several third-party files are damaged, Outbyte PC Repair can perform a free scan showing what it found; repairing the results requires the full version, and reinstalling the program that owns isxdl.dll remains the definitive fix.

Fix 8: Do not treat drivers as the primary cause
isxdl.dll is not a device driver. Reinstalling a printer, graphics or motherboard driver will not normally restore it. Windows Features also do not provide this file.
You can check Windows Features when the affected application explicitly requires an optional Windows component:
- Open Start and search for Windows Features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review only the feature named in the application’s documentation.
- Do not enable random legacy features to solve a DLL error.
- Select OK, restart if Windows requests it, and test the application.
Check Device Manager only when the program also reports a hardware or driver problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the Device status message on the General tab.
- Use Update driver only when a trusted manufacturer or Windows update provides a suitable driver.
- Do not delete or replace
isxdl.dllfrom Device Manager.
If several devices have outdated drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues and show which versions need attention; the free scan identifies the results, while driver installation requires the full version, and it will not replace the original application’s required isxdl.dll.

What not to do
Avoid these common but unreliable repairs:
- Downloading
isxdl.dllfrom a random DLL website - Copying the file into
System32orSysWOW64 - Registering it with
regsvr32 - Replacing a 32-bit file with a 64-bit file
- Copying it from another application or computer
- Disabling antivirus protection to run an unknown installer
- Installing Visual C++, DirectX or .NET without evidence of a missing dependency
- Restoring a file from an unofficial “DLL fixer”
- Assuming a file is safe because its name or internal description looks familiar
A malicious or modified DLL can run with the permissions of the application that loads it. A wrong version may also load partially and cause less obvious failures.

Is isxdl.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an application and installer plugin associated with IS Download DLL, Inno Setup and ISTool projects.
Why does it appear in a temporary folder?
Inno Setup can extract embedded files into a temporary directory while setup runs. A script that calls files:isxdl.dll expects the installer to contain that file. If it was omitted, deleted or blocked, extraction fails.
Can I safely download the latest version?
Not automatically. The correct version depends on the installer or project using it. Historical builds may differ in architecture, exports and calling conventions. Use the copy supplied with the original project or a version the developer identifies as compatible.
Should I install a Visual C++ Redistributable?
Usually no. Install a runtime only if the application documentation or dependency diagnostics identify it as the missing component.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What if reinstalling does not help?
Confirm that the new installer came from the original publisher and that antivirus did not remove the DLL. If the error persists, the package may be incomplete, a dependency may be missing, or the program may require a specific 32-bit build. Identify the executable requesting the file and contact the publisher with the exact error message.
Is the file safe because it says ISX Download DLL?
No. The filename and internal description do not authenticate a particular copy. Check the complete installer’s source, signature, reputation and any publisher-provided hash before restoring a quarantined file.
Can SFC restore it?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while isxdl.dll is third-party. Run DISM and SFC only when other evidence points to broader Windows corruption.
What is the correct final repair?
For an end user, obtain a complete, trustworthy installer or reinstall the affected application. For a developer, package the matching DLL correctly or remove obsolete ISXDL calls from the Inno Setup project.
