What this file actually does
The file is described as PerfectFit Main DLL and is associated with WordPerfect (R) Office 2000, developed by Corel Corporation Limited. PerfectFit was a shared component used by WordPerfect-era software and was also included with some later Corel graphics products that reused WordPerfect components.
That means the affected program may be:
- WordPerfect Office 2000
- A Corel graphics application containing shared WordPerfect or PerfectFit components
- A later Corel product installed alongside an older WordPerfect component
- A leftover startup entry from software that was only partly removed
pfit90.dll is a third-party, 32-bit application DLL. It is not:
- A Windows system file
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX component
- A .NET Framework file
- A printer or display driver
- A general-purpose DLL that belongs in every Windows installation
Public file records contain conflicting historical version details, so do not use a reported version or file size as a universal test. The installation path, owning executable, product publisher, and original installer are more useful evidence.

Causes of the error by symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “pfit90.dll was not found” when opening WordPerfect | Damaged or incomplete installation | Repair WordPerfect |
| The error began after antivirus detection | Quarantine or removal | Check Protection history |
| The message appears when Windows starts | Orphaned startup entry or partial uninstall | Remove the leftover Corel program |
| A Corel graphics program reports the file | Shared PerfectFit component is missing | Repair that specific Corel product |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” | Corrupt, incompatible, or wrong-architecture DLL | Reinstall the owning program |
| The error appeared after Windows maintenance | Application file was removed or damaged | Repair the application before repairing Windows |
| The program fails only for one user | User-profile or permission problem | Test with another Windows profile |
regsvr32 reports a missing entry point |
The DLL is not a registration-based COM component | Stop using regsvr32; reinstall the application |
Reported wording can vary. You may see “Pfit90.dll not found,” “The file Pfit90.dll is missing,” “Cannot find Pfit90.dll,” or “This application failed to start because Pfit90.dll was not found.” The executable named in the message is important because it identifies which program is attempting to load the file.
Fix 1: Identify the program that owns the file
Before changing Windows folders, identify the affected application.
Check the error window
Read the complete message, not just the filename. Some errors identify the executable or program that failed. Write that name down.
For example, a message mentioning a WordPerfect executable points toward WordPerfect Office. A message naming a Corel graphics executable points toward that particular Corel installation.
Check the shortcut
- Right-click the shortcut that causes the error.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the application folder shown in the path.
You can also select Open File Location if it is available.
Check installed programs
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for WordPerfect, Corel, or the program named in the error.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Search for the Corel or WordPerfect product.
The full installation path is useful. A pfit90.dll path inside a legitimate WordPerfect or Corel program folder is consistent with the file’s expected use. A copy found in a temporary folder, an unknown download directory, or an unrelated application folder deserves extra scrutiny.
Fix 2: Repair the original Corel installation
Repair is the most likely solution because it restores missing application files from the product’s own installer.
Try Windows’ repair option
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- In Programs and Features, find the affected WordPerfect or Corel product.
- Right-click it.
- Select Repair if that option is available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the program again.
Some installers show Change instead of Repair.
- Right-click the Corel product.
- Select Change.
- Choose Repair in the Corel setup wizard.
- Allow the process to finish.
- Restart the computer.
If the program starts normally afterward, the repair restored the missing file or corrected the installation registration.

Use the original installation media, installer package, or legitimate Corel account download.
- Close all Corel and WordPerfect programs.
- Start the original installer.
- Choose Repair, Modify, or Change if offered.
- Keep the original installation folder unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Complete setup.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Run the installer as administrator if setup fails:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Retry the repair.
Do not use a DLL downloaded separately from the application installer. A replacement must match the application’s expected files and supporting components.

Fix 3: Uninstall and reinstall the affected program
If repair fails, the installation may be substantially damaged.
Remove the program normally
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected WordPerfect or Corel program.
- Select Uninstall or Change.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
You can also remove it through:
- Windows 11: Settings > Apps > Installed apps
- Windows 10: Settings > Apps > Apps & features
After restarting, reinstall from the original Corel media or a legitimate installer associated with your Corel product. Do not mix files from different Corel products. Several products may contain similarly named PerfectFit components, but that does not make their DLLs interchangeable.
Recommended Free Tools
After installation:
- Start the program from its normal shortcut.
- Open a document or use the feature that previously failed.
- Confirm that the error does not return.
- If the program still fails, record the complete error and executable path before trying additional repairs.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove an application DLL after detecting suspicious behavior or a modified file. Do not immediately restore it just because the filename matches.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
pfit90.dll. - Expand the event and read the detected path and threat details.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are true:
- The file was inside the expected WordPerfect or Corel installation folder.
- The installed product is legitimate.
- The quarantine event corresponds to the time the program stopped working.
- A current scan does not identify broader malware activity.
If the path is unknown or the alert indicates active malware, leave the file quarantined. Reinstall the Corel product from trusted original media instead.
Run a full scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
If malware is suspected or keeps returning, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same scan options screen. Reinstall the application only after the system is clean.
Fix 5: Remove a leftover startup entry
If the error appears immediately after signing in, but you no longer use WordPerfect or Corel software, Windows may still be trying to start a removed component.
Check installed applications first
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Corel and WordPerfect entries.
- Remove the unused or incomplete entry.
- Restart Windows.
If the uninstall entry is damaged, use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter. This is appropriate when Windows lists the program but cannot remove it normally.
Check startup applications
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for a Corel, WordPerfect, or unknown entry associated with the error.
- Select it.
- Choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling a startup item stops the message from appearing, but it does not repair the program. If you still need the application, reinstall it instead.
Avoid deleting random registry entries based only on the DLL filename. Remove the owning application through Windows or its installer whenever possible.

Fix 6: Address legacy compatibility problems
WordPerfect Office 2000 predates current Windows releases. Current Corel support information for newer WordPerfect products should not be treated as confirmation that Office 2000 is supported on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
If the file is present but the program still fails:
- Right-click the program shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version suggested by the compatibility troubleshooter.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the application requires it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the application.
You can also run Microsoft’s built-in troubleshooter:
- Open Settings.
- Select System on Windows 11, or Update & Security on Windows 10.
- Open Troubleshoot.
- Select Other troubleshooters on Windows 11.
- Run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- Select the affected program.
- Apply the recommended settings.
- Test the program.
Compatibility mode cannot make every 2000-era application work on modern Windows. If the application remains unstable, use a supported Corel release or an appropriately isolated legacy environment rather than replacing DLLs repeatedly.
Fix 7: Understand 32-bit and 64-bit Windows correctly
Legacy Corel applications using pfit90.dll are 32-bit applications. A 32-bit program can run on 64-bit Windows through Windows’ WOW64 compatibility layer, but that does not mean every old installer will work correctly.
Do not copy pfit90.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- Another Corel program’s folder
- A general Windows search path
On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the 64-bit system directory and SysWOW64 is the 32-bit system directory. The names are confusing, but neither folder is the correct default location for this application DLL.
The correct destination is normally the affected Corel program’s own folder, and the safest way to place it there is through the product installer.
Fix 8: Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that pfit90.dll is an ActiveX or COM server that requires registration.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Do not run this as a routine fix:
regsvr32 pfit90.dll
It may produce an error such as “The module was loaded but the entry point was not found.” Even if a command completes, it does not repair a missing application installation or restore a required dependency.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor’s documentation specifically identifies a DLL as a registration-based component and gives the correct command and path. That is not the normal repair method for pfit90.dll.

Fix 9: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is affected
Because pfit90.dll belongs to an application, SFC and DISM usually will not restore it. Use these tools when Windows has broader symptoms, such as damaged system features, repeated system errors, or problems affecting multiple unrelated applications.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the prompt.
Run these commands in order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete. Test the Corel application again.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchA successful SFC scan does not prove that pfit90.dll is intact. SFC checks protected Windows system files, not every third-party DLL installed by Corel.
If you are repeatedly hunting through Windows components and cannot tell which system issue is relevant, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; its free scan shows the findings, while repair features require the full version. Reinstalling the Corel program remains the definitive fix when only pfit90.dll is missing.
There is no Windows Optional Feature that supplies this file. Turning on .NET Framework, DirectPlay, Media Features, or another Windows feature is not a targeted repair for pfit90.dll.
Fix 10: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is relevant when the problem began immediately after a driver, application, update, or configuration change and a restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs to an earlier state. It normally does not remove personal documents, but review the affected-program list before confirming.
Do not use System Restore as the first step for an isolated missing Corel DLL. Repairing the owning application is more precise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 11: Consider permissions or a damaged user profile
If the program works for another Windows account, the DLL may not be the real problem.
Test with a separate local account:
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts.
- Select Other users.
- Choose Add account.
- Create a temporary local account.
- Sign in to that account.
- Run the Corel program.
If it works there, check the original account’s permissions, profile settings, redirected folders, and security software. Do not assume the DLL itself is defective.
If the program fails for every account, return to repairing or reinstalling the Corel product and inspect the application event logs for additional missing dependencies.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A DLL download page may provide:
- The wrong historical build
- A file from a different Corel product
- A modified or malicious binary
- A 32-bit file for an incompatible program
- A file that lacks other required dependencies
Even a genuine file may not fix the root cause if the installer removed supporting files, registry settings, configuration data, or related PerfectFit components.
Use the original Corel installation media, a legitimate Corel account download, or a trusted backup of the complete application. If a backup contains the exact original file, restore it to the original application directory only after checking the backup and scanning the restored file. Reinstalling the complete product is preferable to copying one DLL.
When driver troubleshooting is relevant
pfit90.dll is not a driver, and Device Manager will not normally repair it. Do not install a display, printer, chipset, or storage driver merely because a Corel program reports this filename.
Device Manager is relevant only if the computer also has a separate hardware problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected hardware.
- Right-click a device with a warning icon.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver obtained from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
If several unrelated devices need attention and manually matching driver versions is becoming the separate problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation requires the full version. Updating a driver still will not replace pfit90.dll, so repair the Corel application separately.
Frequently asked questions
Is pfit90.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a third-party Corel application DLL associated with the PerfectFit component and WordPerfect Office 2000. It should not normally be stored in a Windows system directory.
Which program installed pfit90.dll?
WordPerfect Office 2000 is the clearest association. Some later Corel graphics products also reused related WordPerfect-era components. Check the executable and full path rather than assuming every Corel product uses the same file.
Should I download pfit90.dll?
No. Use the original Corel installer or a legitimate installation source. A separate download can be malicious, incompatible, or from the wrong product.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Those are Windows system directories, not the normal location for an application DLL. The file should generally be restored to the affected Corel program folder by its installer.
Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix the error?
There is no verified Microsoft redistributable that supplies pfit90.dll. Installing those packages is not a targeted solution.
Should I register pfit90.dll?
Usually not. There is no evidence that this file requires COM registration. Repair or reinstall the owning application instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if the message says the file is not designed to run on Windows?
The file may be corrupted, incompatible with the application, or the wrong architecture. It does not necessarily indicate a missing Windows runtime. Remove the questionable copy and repair the complete Corel installation.
What if the original program has already been removed?
Remove the leftover startup or uninstall entry. Check Installed apps, Programs and Features, and Startup apps. If Windows cannot remove the damaged entry, use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter.
What if reinstalling does not help?
Record the exact error, executable name, and full path. Then check the installer, antivirus history, file permissions, application event logs, compatibility settings, and whether the application is supported on the current Windows release. Avoid replacing the DLL with files from another Corel product.
