Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →netan.dll is a legacy MultiSIM V6 application file, not a Windows component, and the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the MultiSIM installation that requests it. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or copy it into System32; restore the complete application from legitimate installation media instead.
What this file actually does
Public file metadata identifies netan.dll as “SnapIns Module”, associated with MultiSIM V6 and attributed to Interactive Image Technology Ltd. The exact MultiSIM edition and installation directory that used the file are not publicly verified, but the file is clearly associated with the old Electronics Workbench and MultiSIM software family rather than Windows itself.
MultiSIM is circuit-design and simulation software. A missing netan.dll message normally means that the application cannot load one of its own components. It does not mean that Windows has lost a standard runtime, graphics driver, DirectX file, .NET component, or Visual C++ library.
The file is reported as a 32-bit Windows DLL. That matters because an older 32-bit MultiSIM application needs a compatible 32-bit application package and compatible dependencies, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11.

The description “SnapIns Module” is the embedded file description. Public documentation does not explain the module’s precise internal function, so it is better to treat netan.dll as a required MultiSIM component than to guess what individual circuit-simulation feature it implements.
Causes and symptoms
| What you notice | Most likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
MultiSIM stops during startup and says netan.dll is missing |
Incomplete or damaged installation | Repair or reinstall the same MultiSIM release |
| The problem began after antivirus activity | The file may have been quarantined or removed | Check quarantine, then restore only a file from legitimate installation media |
| The file exists but Windows says “specified module could not be found” | A dependency of netan.dll may be missing |
Reinstall the complete application and investigate dependencies |
| The error appears after copying a DLL from another computer | Wrong build, release, or architecture | Remove the mismatched file and reinstall MultiSIM |
| MultiSIM was uninstalled but the error appears at Windows sign-in | A leftover shortcut, startup entry, or scheduled task is launching it | Remove the orphaned startup reference |
| A new Windows installation cannot run the old program | Compatibility or licensing limitations | Use a compatible legacy Windows environment or virtual machine |
| Windows reports that the file is not designed to run on Windows | Invalid, corrupted, or incompatible binary | Replace it through application repair or reinstallation |
| Other applications also fail to start | A broader Windows or dependency problem may exist | Check system files and the actual failing application |
Examples of the reported wording include “netan.dll was not found,” “The file netan.dll is missing or corrupted,” and “Error loading netan.dll.” These messages can vary by Windows version and by the application that calls the DLL.
If the wording is “The specified module could not be found,” do not assume that netan.dll itself is absent. Windows can display that message when the named DLL exists but another DLL it needs cannot be loaded.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall MultiSIM first
This is the highest-probability repair because netan.dll belongs to the application. Use the exact MultiSIM or Electronics Workbench release that was already installed rather than mixing files from different releases.
Try Windows app repair
- Close MultiSIM, Electronics Workbench, and any related NI applications.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- On Windows 11, select Installed apps. On Windows 10, select Apps & features.
- Find MultiSIM, Electronics Workbench, or the relevant Circuit Design Suite entry.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application entry on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if it is available.
- Select Repair.
- Wait for Windows to finish, then restart the computer.
- Launch MultiSIM from its normal shortcut.
If the program starts without the error, the repair restored the missing component. Open a representative circuit file to confirm that the installation works beyond the initial splash screen.
Some older installers do not expose a Windows Repair button. In that case, open Control Panel:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the MultiSIM or Electronics Workbench entry.
- Look for Change, Repair, or Modify.
- Follow the installer prompts and restart Windows when finished.
Reinstall from a legitimate source
If repair is unavailable or fails:
- Back up your circuit files, custom models, databases, and configuration files.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the MultiSIM or Electronics Workbench installation.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer or an authorized NI installer associated with your license or account.
- Install the same product generation when possible.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test MultiSIM before restoring optional custom files.
Do not overwrite one NI software generation with DLLs from another. Older releases can have different installation requirements and compatibility rules. If the original installer is unavailable, contact NI support or check the authorized download area associated with the applicable license, subscription, or service agreement. There is no reason to trust a standalone netan.dll file merely because its filename matches the error.
If uninstalling is the only available route, preserve your user files first. Product databases and configuration data may be stored separately from the main program directory, so do not assume that uninstalling will preserve every custom library automatically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an application file after a scan, cleanup operation, or policy change. This is a possibility, not proof that netan.dll is a false positive.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent events for
netan.dll, MultiSIM, or the application’s installation directory. - If the item is present, note the detection name and original path.
- Restore it only if you can verify that it came from the legitimate MultiSIM installation.
- Run a full security scan.
- Start MultiSIM again.
If you are uncertain about the quarantine item, do not restore it. Reinstall the complete application from original media or an authorized NI source instead. A downloaded replacement may be altered, mismatched, or bundled with unwanted software.
If the file repeatedly disappears after a legitimate reinstall, leave the application closed and investigate the security product’s detection history and policy. Do not simply disable protection permanently.
Fix 3: Confirm the application architecture and file location
A reported 32-bit netan.dll belongs with the compatible 32-bit MultiSIM application. A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit programs through Windows compatibility layers, but that does not make a 64-bit DLL interchangeable with a 32-bit one.
Check the application path:
- Right-click the MultiSIM shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for the application’s own program directory and determine whether the expected installation is still present.
- Do not replace files in that directory with copies from a different release.
- Do not move the DLL to a Windows system directory.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system binaries, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries. Those names are frequently misunderstood. Neither directory is a general-purpose storage location for application DLLs.
If you installed a 32-bit MultiSIM package on 64-bit Windows, keep its application files together in the program’s own directory. If the installer refuses to run or the program is incompatible with the current operating system, use a supported legacy environment or a virtual machine rather than assembling a DLL collection manually.
Fix 4: Check whether a dependency is missing
A “missing” message can identify the first file Windows tried to load, not necessarily the file that is truly absent. This is especially relevant when netan.dll exists in the MultiSIM directory.
First, reinstall the complete application rather than copying individual files. A complete installer restores the dependency set and the correct directory structure.
Recommended Free Tools
For advanced checking:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error created at the time MultiSIM failed.
- Record the application name, faulting module, and error code.
- Search the exact error in the official product documentation or provide it to NI support.
You can also use a reputable dependency-analysis utility, but avoid tools that recommend downloading arbitrary DLLs. The useful result is the name of a missing dependency and the application release that requires it, not a list of random files to copy.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because netan.dll ends in .dll. There is no evidence that this file is supplied by those Microsoft runtimes. Install one of those components only when the actual error or the MultiSIM installer identifies that dependency.

Fix 5: Run Windows system repair commands
Because netan.dll is associated with third-party software, Windows system repair is not the primary solution. These commands will not normally recreate a vendor DLL that was never part of Windows. They are useful when several unrelated Windows components are also damaged.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Restart Windows.
A successful result reports that the restore operation completed. If DISM reports that it could not repair the component store, record the exact message and continue with the appropriate Windows servicing repair rather than repeatedly running the same command.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes:
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test MultiSIM.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, test the application. If it reports that it found no integrity violations, that result does not prove that netan.dll is present because the file is not normally a Windows system file.
When manually repeating DISM and SFC becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing what it identifies; repairs are completed by the full version, while reinstalling MultiSIM remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Fix 6: Do not register netan.dll unless the installer requires it
A DLL is not automatically a self-registering component. Running regsvr32 because a filename ends in .dll can produce another error and does not repair a damaged application installation.
Use regsvr32 only if the original MultiSIM installer or explicit vendor documentation instructs you to register this specific file. Otherwise, do not run:
regsvr32 netan.dll
If an installer genuinely requires registration, use an elevated Command Prompt and the correct version of regsvr32 for the DLL architecture. Stop if Windows reports that the module was loaded but the entry point was not found, because that indicates the DLL does not provide the registration function being requested.
For ordinary MultiSIM repair, reinstalling the application is the correct way to restore its files and registration data.
Fix 7: Check Windows Features only for a named requirement
Windows Features are not a general repair for netan.dll. Do not enable random legacy components simply because an old program fails.

A missing netan.dll is an application-file problem, not normally a device-driver problem. Device Manager is still useful when MultiSIM fails alongside graphics, display, or hardware errors.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or the hardware category related to the error.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the General tab and read the device status.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver only when Windows or the hardware vendor identifies a relevant update.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
When hunting through many driver versions is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show the drivers it identifies; installation is completed by the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling MultiSIM when the application file itself is missing.
Do not use Device Manager to replace netan.dll. Drivers and application DLLs are separate components.
Fix 9: Handle an obsolete or orphaned installation
If MultiSIM was removed but Windows still displays the error during startup, the remaining problem may be an orphaned launch entry.
Check startup apps:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps on Windows 11, or the Startup tab on Windows 10.
- Look for MultiSIM, Electronics Workbench, or an entry pointing to a deleted program folder.
- Select it and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Also check Task Scheduler:
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that launch MultiSIM or point to a missing installation.
- Confirm the path before disabling a task.
- Disable only an entry that clearly belongs to the removed application.
If the failure began immediately after a known software change and the installer cannot be found, System Restore may be reasonable. Back up personal files first, then open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore and choose a restore point created before the change.
For very old software, current Windows compatibility may be the real limitation. Test the original installer in a compatible legacy Windows environment or virtual machine, and keep the environment isolated and backed up. Do not assume that a newer MultiSIM release can use files from an older one.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A standalone DLL download is not a complete repair. It can be:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- The wrong release for the installed MultiSIM edition
- The wrong architecture
- Modified or corrupted
- Missing its own dependencies
- Placed in a directory where it creates version conflicts
- Packaged with unwanted software
It also does not restore installer registration, supporting files, databases, configuration, or licensing components. The safe sources are the original MultiSIM installation media, a known-good organizational backup, or an authorized NI download associated with the applicable product access. If none is available, contact NI support rather than using a DLL download site.
FAQ
Is netan.dll part of Windows?
No evidence supports that conclusion. It is associated with the legacy MultiSIM V6 application and should normally remain with that application.

- Take control over the sound playing through audio hardware
Is netan.dll a Microsoft runtime?
No. Available metadata associates it with MultiSIM V6, not with Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. Install those runtimes only when the actual application error identifies them.
Is netan.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public metadata identifies it as a 32-bit Windows DLL. The compatible MultiSIM application package matters more than whether the host version of Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
Generally no. Keep application DLLs in the application’s own directory and restore them through the MultiSIM installer.
Should I run regsvr32 netan.dll?
Not unless the original installer or explicit vendor documentation requires registration. A normal application DLL may not implement the registration entry point.
Why does Windows say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
A dependency of netan.dll may be missing, or the file may be incompatible or damaged. Reinstall the complete application and inspect the application error details.
What if antivirus quarantined the file?
Check quarantine history. Restore it only when its origin is confirmed as legitimate MultiSIM installation media, then scan the system. Otherwise reinstall MultiSIM from a trusted source.

Usually not. Those commands repair Windows components, while netan.dll belongs to third-party software. Use them when other Windows files are also failing, not as a replacement for MultiSIM repair.
What should I do if the original installer is unavailable?
Back up your circuit files, check authorized NI download access, and contact NI support. If the old release cannot run on current Windows, use a compatible legacy environment or virtual machine rather than downloading an unverified DLL.
