evr.dll Missing on Windows 11 and 10: Safe Repair Steps

evr.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not a file you should download from a random DLL website. When Windows or an application says evr.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the safest fix is to restore the Windows media components or repair the Windows system files.

Follow these steps in order. Start by checking whether you have Windows 10 or 11 N, because N editions omit some media technologies and may need Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack.

Before you start

Write down the exact error message and the program that displays it. The wording helps distinguish different problems:

  • “Failed to load library: EVR.dll”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because EVR.dll was not found”
  • “The procedure entry point could not be located”
  • “EVR.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
  • A game, installer, media player, or graphics utility that silently closes

Also note whether the error began after a Windows installation, feature update, driver installation, antivirus detection, cleanup program, or application reinstall.

Do not copy evr.dll from another computer, an application folder, or a DLL download site. An arbitrary file may contain malware, belong to a different Windows build, have the wrong architecture, lack the correct signature, or hide the actual Windows component problem.

Microsoft’s Enhanced Video Renderer documentation describes EVR as a Windows video-rendering component used by Media Foundation and DirectShow applications.

1. Check whether you have Windows 10 or 11 N

Time needed: 5–15 minutes, plus a restart

Windows N editions do not include some Windows media technologies that are present in standard editions. Microsoft supplies the Media Feature Pack as an Optional Feature for Windows 10 and Windows 11 N.

Check your Windows edition

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Look at Windows specifications.
  5. Check the Edition entry.

If it says Windows 11 Home N, Windows 11 Pro N, Windows 10 Home N, Windows 10 Pro N, or another edition ending in N, install the Media Feature Pack.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Install Media Feature Pack on Windows 11 N

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Optional features.
  4. Select View features beside Add an optional feature.
  5. Search for Media Feature Pack.
  6. Select it.
  7. Select Next.
  8. Select Add.
  9. Wait for the installation to finish.
  10. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not request a restart.

Microsoft lists the supported procedure on its page for the Media Feature Pack for Windows 10 and Windows 11 N.

Install Media Feature Pack on Windows 10 N

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Apps & features.
  4. Select Optional features.
  5. Select Add a feature.
  6. Find Media Feature Pack.
  7. Select it.
  8. Select Install.
  9. Restart Windows.

Open the affected application after the restart. If it launches normally, the missing media feature was the cause.

If Media Feature Pack does not appear, confirm that the edition name actually ends in N, install pending Windows updates, restart, and check Optional Features again. Do not install the package on a non-N edition as a general-purpose evr.dll repair.

2. Install pending Windows updates

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

A Windows servicing problem or incomplete feature update can leave protected system components damaged or mismatched.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install every available update.
  5. Restart if requested.
  6. Return to Windows Update and check again.
  7. Open the affected application.

If the error started immediately after a feature update, driver installation, or cleanup operation, continue with the repair steps below rather than repeatedly reinstalling the application.

3. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

Time needed: 15–45 minutes

For standard Windows editions, or for an N edition where the Media Feature Pack did not resolve the issue, use Microsoft’s built-in repair commands. DISM repairs the Windows component store first. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies.

Run DISM

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
  3. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
  4. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to complete.

The process may appear to pause at a percentage for several minutes. Do not close the window while it is working.

A successful result usually says that the restore operation completed successfully and that the component store corruption was repaired, or that no component store corruption was detected.

Run System File Checker

When DISM finishes, run:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.

Possible results include:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not find damaged protected files.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the application.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: restart, run Windows Update, and investigate the CBS log or use a matching Windows repair source.
  • The scan cannot run: restart Windows and repeat the command from an administrator terminal.

Restart after both commands, then run Windows Update once more and test the application.

Microsoft documents DISM Windows image repair and System File Checker separately.

Repeating SFC without knowing whether the component store is healthy rarely adds useful information. Run DISM first, then SFC, and note the exact result of each command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of identifying damaged Windows components and repeating repair checks; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and DISM and SFC remain the Microsoft-supported repair path.

4. Repair or verify the affected application

Time needed: 5–30 minutes

If only one game or application reports evr.dll, the Windows file may be intact while the application installation is incomplete or contains an incompatible local copy.

Use Windows app repair

For a Microsoft Store application or an application that supports Windows repair:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
  6. Select Advanced options if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

Use Reset only if Repair does not help and you understand that it may remove local application settings or stored data.

Verify game files

Many game launchers include a Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files command. Open the launcher, select the game, open its settings or properties, and run the verification process.

This replaces incomplete application files without requiring you to download a separate Windows DLL.

Reinstall the application

If repair or verification fails:

  1. Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Download the application again from its official publisher or game store.
  4. Install it using an administrator account if required.
  5. Test it before adding unofficial mods, injectors, overlays, or replacement DLLs.

A reinstall is especially important when the error appears only in one program and Windows repair reports no integrity problems.

5. Check Windows Security quarantine

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

Defender or another security product may have quarantined a legitimate system file, or it may have removed an unofficial application-local file that happened to use the same name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Open any detection related to evr.dll.
  6. Inspect the file location, detection name, and details.

Do not restore a file merely because it is named evr.dll. A genuine Windows copy should be in the expected protected Windows system location and should have Microsoft’s digital signature. A file beside a game executable, installer, or unknown utility deserves additional scrutiny.

If the file is clearly a genuine Microsoft system file and you understand the detection, follow Windows Security’s restore or allow instructions. Microsoft warns that restoring a file may cause Defender to detect it again unless it is explicitly allowed. If the origin is uncertain, cancel the restore and use DISM and SFC instead.

After dealing with quarantine, restart Windows and test the application.

6. Check for a wrong local DLL or architecture mismatch

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

A 64-bit Windows installation supports both 64-bit and 32-bit applications. Windows uses WOW64 redirection so that 32-bit programs receive the appropriate system files. You normally should not manually choose between System32 and SysWOW64.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft explains that System32 contains native system binaries on 64-bit Windows, while 32-bit applications are redirected through SysWOW64. The details are covered in Microsoft’s WOW64 compatibility guidance.

Look for a suspicious evr.dll beside the affected application’s executable:

  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Open file location.
  3. Look in that folder for evr.dll.
  4. Right-click the file and select Properties.
  5. Check Digital Signatures and Details.
  6. Do not replace it by downloading another copy.

If the application has an unofficial or unsigned local DLL, use the application’s Repair, Verify, or reinstall procedure. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit program folder, or a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit program folder.

The exact file version and size can vary with Windows edition, architecture, servicing updates, and build. A version table from an unrelated computer is not a reliable repair guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Treat entry-point errors differently

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

A missing-file error and an entry-point error are not the same problem.

If Windows says that a procedure or entry point could not be located in evr.dll, the file may exist but be incompatible with the application or with another media component. This can happen after an incomplete update, an application-local DLL conflict, or a mismatched installation.

Work through these steps:

  1. Install pending Windows updates.
  2. Run DISM and SFC as described above.
  3. Repair or verify the affected application.
  4. Remove unofficial local DLLs through the application’s repair process.
  5. Test another application that plays video.

If several applications report related errors involving mf.dll, mfplat.dll, or mfreadwrite.dll, the issue is more likely to involve Windows Media Foundation components than one application’s installation.

Why mf.dll, mfplat.dll, and mfreadwrite.dll may appear with evr.dll

These files belong to related Windows media technologies. An application may use Media Foundation to read media, process streams, and send video to a renderer. EVR is the component that displays video, while the other files can support media-platform and media-reading operations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consequently, an application may report several missing or incompatible media DLLs together. Installing Visual C++ or a legacy DirectX package does not normally restore these Windows Media Foundation components.

8. Consider a display-driver problem only after Windows repair

Time needed: 15–45 minutes

A display driver can cause a failure during video initialization, but it is a weaker explanation for a genuinely missing evr.dll. EVR uses the graphics subsystem, so a driver issue is more plausible when the application loads the file successfully and then crashes while opening video.

First complete the Windows N, Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and application checks. Then update or reinstall the display driver from the GPU or computer manufacturer.

9. Use System Restore after a recent system change

Time needed: 20–45 minutes

System Restore is useful when evr.dll worked until a driver installation, cleanup utility, update, or other system change.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the applications and drivers that may be affected.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally does not remove personal files, but it can revert system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs. Do not interrupt the process.

10. Use a Windows repair installation when repair tools fail

Time needed: 45 minutes or longer

If Media Feature Pack, Windows Update, DISM, SFC, application repair, and System Restore do not help, Windows itself may have a deeper component-store or installation problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before proceeding, back up important files. A supported in-place Windows repair using matching installation media can replace Windows components while preserving personal files and, depending on the method and choices, installed applications. Follow Microsoft’s current Windows recovery and installation guidance for your edition and architecture.

If SFC says it cannot repair files, inspect the CBS log for the affected component. DISM may also need a matching Windows installation source when Windows Update cannot provide repair files. Do not use an unrelated build copied from another computer.

What causes evr.dll errors

The most likely causes are:

Cause What usually fixes it
Windows 10 or 11 N lacks media components Install Media Feature Pack and restart
Damaged protected Windows files Run DISM, then SFC
Defender or another security product quarantined a file Inspect Protection History and verify authenticity
One application has an incomplete installation Repair, verify, or reinstall that application
Wrong or conflicting application-local DLL Remove it through the application repair process
Windows build or component-store mismatch Install updates, repair Windows, or use System Restore
Video initialization fails after the file loads Update or reinstall the display driver

evr.dll is part of Microsoft Windows, not a Visual C++ runtime file and not a graphics-card driver. Microsoft describes EVR as a legacy video-rendering component with an EVR media sink for Media Foundation and an EVR filter for DirectShow. New Windows applications are encouraged to use newer media APIs instead.

Why DirectX, Visual C++, and regsvr32 are usually not the answer

Visual C++ Redistributables

Visual C++ Redistributables provide Microsoft C and C++ runtime components. They do not normally restore a missing Windows Media Foundation file. Install or repair them only when the application specifically reports a Visual C++ runtime problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DirectX End-User Runtime

The legacy DirectX End-User Runtime supplies selected older DirectX components used by some games. It is not a general repair for evr.dll, mf.dll, or mfplat.dll.

regsvr32 evr.dll

Do not treat this as a standard repair command. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft’s EVR usage documentation describes creating the renderer through the appropriate Windows media interfaces, not manually registering evr.dll.

Running the command below may produce an entry-point error and does not repair a missing or damaged Windows component:

regsvr32 evr.dll

Use DISM, SFC, Media Feature Pack installation, or application repair instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is evr.dll a Microsoft file?

Yes. evr.dll is the Enhanced Video Renderer DLL, a Microsoft Windows component used to display video through Windows media technologies.

Should I download `evr.dll separately?

No. Microsoft does not provide a current standalone evr.dll download for ordinary troubleshooting. Restore it through Windows Optional Features, Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.

Does every evr.dll error mean I have Windows N?

No. Windows N is an important possibility, especially when several media-related DLLs are missing, but damaged Windows files, antivirus quarantine, an incomplete application installation, and architecture conflicts can cause similar messages.

Why does Roblox or a game report this file?

The application may use Windows media components during installation, startup, video playback, or rendering initialization. If only that game reports the error, verify or reinstall it after repairing Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I copy the file from System32 to SysWOW64?

No. Windows handles normal 32-bit and 64-bit system-file redirection. Manual copying can create version, architecture, signature, and dependency problems.

What information should I provide if the problem continues?

Record the exact error text, Windows edition and build, affected application, whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, whether the edition ends in N, and whether mf.dll, mfplat.dll, or mfreadwrite.dll are also mentioned. Include the results of DISM and SFC, along with whether the file was found in Defender Protection History.
