“GmDvsd.dll was not found,” “The program can’t start because GmDvsd.dll is missing,” and “Error loading GmDvsd.dll” all point to the same problem: an older video application cannot load its Ligos DVSD Video Decoder component.
The 60-second answer
gmdvsd.dll is not a normal Windows system file. It is the Ligos DVSD Video Decoder, a legacy 32-bit video component from Ligos Corporation that was bundled with older video-editing, DVD-authoring, capture, and multimedia programs.
The safest fix is to identify the application named in the error and repair or reinstall that application from its original installer or installation media. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website and copy it into System32.
If the application still works except for DV capture or video import, the decoder may be needed only for that feature. If the entire program will not start, the application installation is more likely incomplete, damaged, or missing a dependency.

What is gmdvsd.dll
GmDvsd.dll is identified in public file metadata as Ligos DVSD Video Decoder. “DVSD” refers to a Digital Video decoder used by older Windows multimedia software.
It was not supplied as a standard Windows component. Historical software inventories associate it with products including:
- MAGIX video deLuxe
- MAGIX Movie Edit Pro
- MAGIX Movies to CD & DVD
- MAGIX PhotoStory on CD & DVD
- MAGIX Fotos & Videos easy
- Vela Research Prism and CineView software
Those are documented historical associations, not a complete list. Different releases may have used different copies or related components.
The known public build is a 32-bit Windows DLL. That means a 32-bit application may require it even when the computer itself runs 64-bit Windows. Windows’ own legacy DV decoder is a different component, qdv.dll; installing or repairing that Windows decoder does not normally recreate gmdvsd.dll.
What the error usually means
The wording can help narrow down the cause:
- “GmDvsd.dll was not found” usually means the application cannot find the file in its installation path or search path.
- “The program can’t start because GmDvsd.dll is missing” usually indicates an incomplete or damaged application installation.
- “The file is missing or corrupted” can indicate that the DLL was damaged, quarantined, or replaced with an incompatible copy.
- “The specified module could not be found” may mean that a dependency of
gmdvsd.dllis missing, even when the named file is present. - “Not designed to run on Windows” or “Bad Image” generally suggests a damaged file, architecture mismatch, or damaged dependency.
Think back to what happened immediately before the error. Common triggers include uninstalling another video program, cleaning an old program folder, restoring a backup, moving the application directory, upgrading Windows, or antivirus quarantine.
Fix 1: Repair the application that reports the error
This is the most likely solution because gmdvsd.dll belongs to an application rather than Windows itself.
If it is a modern packaged app
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected video application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Windows keeps the application’s data when Repair is available. If Repair does not help, return to the same page and use Reset only if you are prepared to lose the app’s local settings.
If it is a classic desktop program
- Press Windows key, type Control Panel, and open it.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Find the video or DVD application.
- Right-click it.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Some older installers do not offer Repair. In that case, uninstall the program, restart the computer, and reinstall it from the original disc, downloaded installer, or licensed installation image.

Use the same installation location where possible. If the program originally lived under C:Program Files (x86), reinstalling it into a different manually created folder can leave shortcuts, codecs, and registration entries inconsistent.
How to tell whether this worked
The fix worked if the program opens without the DLL message and the feature that previously failed, such as DV import or capture, works again.
If the error returns immediately after reinstalling, check whether antivirus removed the file, whether the installer completed successfully, and whether the program is compatible with the current version of Windows.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove an old DLL because it is unsigned, uses obsolete code, or resembles a suspicious file. That does not automatically mean the file is malware, but it also does not prove that every copy is safe.

Windows Security steps
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
GmDvsd.dllor the affected application. - Expand the entry and review its location, detection name, and action.
- If the file came from the application’s original installer and Windows Security identifies it as safe, choose the available restoration or allow option.
- If the file came from an unknown DLL website, leave it quarantined.
- Repair or reinstall the parent application from trusted original media instead.
After restoring a quarantined file, launch the application again. If Windows Security removes it again, do not repeatedly whitelist it. Keep the file quarantined and obtain a clean application installation.
Fix 3: Reinstall the complete application, not just the DLL
If Repair does not restore the file, perform a clean reinstall.
- Back up the application’s projects, templates, presets, and license information.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall the affected application.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove only leftover folders that clearly belong to that application. Do not delete shared Windows folders.
- Run the original installer as administrator. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete every optional codec or capture-component selection offered by the installer.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the application before restoring custom plugins or manually copied files.
For an older disc-based product, use the original disc and its setup program. For a downloaded product, use the installer supplied with the licensed product. There is no verified current official standalone Ligos download page for gmdvsd.dll, so a separately downloaded copy should not be treated as an equivalent replacement.
If the old application is no longer available, preserve its original installer, license information, and any known-good backup before making further changes.

Fix 4: Confirm that the application and DLL architecture match
Public metadata identifies the known gmdvsd.dll build as a 32-bit Windows DLL. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs its 32-bit application components and dependencies.
Check the likely installation paths:
C:Program Files (x86)usually contains 32-bit applications.C:Program Filesusually contains 64-bit applications, although older software can use either location.- The DLL should normally be beside the application executable or in a folder specified by that application’s installer.
Do not move the file between these folders manually. Do not copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 simply because the filename is missing.
Installing a 64-bit Visual C++ package will not replace an application-private 32-bit codec. Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET should be installed only when the application’s own installer identifies that package as a dependency.
Fix 5: Check Windows Features only when the application needs legacy media support
Windows Features are not a normal source for gmdvsd.dll, but an old application may also depend on legacy media components.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the available media and legacy compatibility features.
- Enable only a feature required by the application’s documentation or installer.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not expect this step to install the Ligos DLL. If the application’s installer says a Microsoft media feature is required, enabling it may resolve a separate dependency error. It will not replace a missing application-owned codec.
Fix 6: Run Windows repair commands only for wider system corruption
gmdvsd.dll is a third-party application file, so System File Checker normally will not recreate it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself is showing other problems, such as damaged built-in apps, failed updates, or multiple protected system files reporting errors.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the video application again.
If both commands report that Windows is healthy but the application still reports gmdvsd.dll, that result is expected. Reinstall the parent application instead of repeating the commands.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall related drivers only when capture hardware is involved
A driver will not normally supply gmdvsd.dll, but an old video-capture application may also fail because its capture card, camera, or IEEE 1394 device is not working correctly.

Check Device Manager
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras, Imaging devices, Sound, video and game controllers, and IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers if present.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Device status message on the General tab.
- Select Driver to view the installed driver details.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
- Restart Windows and test capture again.
If the device disappeared after an update, right-click the relevant category and select Scan for hardware changes. If the application works for editing but fails only during capture, the capture driver may be a separate problem from the missing decoder.
Manually identifying old capture hardware drivers can mean checking hardware IDs, Windows compatibility, and several driver packages. Fix 8: Use System Restore after a clearly identified system change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver installation, Windows change, or software removal and a restore point exists.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal documents, but applications installed after the selected restore point may need to be installed again.
If the problem is limited to one old video application, repairing or reinstalling that application is more targeted than using System Restore.
Should you run regsvr32 on gmdvsd.dll
Usually, no.
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for installing every missing DLL.
Some Vela Research documentation describes Ligos components as COM components installed and registered by the product setup process. That makes registration relevant to a specific Vela installation, but the correct approach is to run the Vela installer or its documented setup procedure.

If the original installer specifically instructs you to register the file, use the correct architecture. On 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit registration utility is normally:
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "fullpathtoGmDvsd.dll"
The 64-bit utility is:
%windir%System32regsvr32.exe "fullpathtoGmDvsd.dll"
A registration error can mean the DLL is not self-registering, the wrong regsvr32 utility was used, the file is damaged, or one of its dependencies is missing. Reinstall the application rather than guessing.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid sites offering an isolated gmdvsd.dll download. A copied DLL may have:
- The wrong architecture
- An incompatible build
- Missing dependent files
- Altered or malicious code
- No trustworthy provenance
- A location the application never searches
Even when the copied file removes one message, it may leave the application unstable or cause a different loader error. Never whitelist an unknown download merely because its filename matches the error.

Is gmdvsd.dll part of Windows?
No evidence indicates that it ships with Windows itself. It is associated with the third-party Ligos DVSD Video Decoder and older multimedia applications.
Is gmdvsd.dll a virus?
The filename alone cannot establish whether a file is safe or malicious. Check its location, digital signature where available, antivirus result, and provenance. A copy installed by a known legacy video application is different from an unexpected copy downloaded from an unknown site.
