usbmm1x1.dll errors usually appear as “usbmm1x1.dll was not found,” “usbmm1x1.dll is missing or corrupted,” or “Error loading usbmm1x1.dll.” The file belongs to the old Midiman/M-Audio USB MIDI 1×1 driver stack, not to Windows, DirectX, .NET, or the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime.
The safest repair is to identify the MIDI interface, remove any incomplete driver installation, and reinstall the complete driver package intended for that exact device and Windows version. Downloading the DLL by itself is rarely a proper fix.
What usbmm1x1.dll is
usbmm1x1.dll is a legacy Windows multimedia-driver DLL associated with the Midiman USB MIDI 1×1 interface. Midiman later became associated with M-Audio, so the same hardware may appear under either name in old documentation, driver packages, or Device Manager records.
Public historical metadata describes the file as:
- Description: Midiman USB Midi 1×1 Midi Interface Windows Driver
- Category: Hardware driver
- Architecture: 32-bit Win32 DLL
- Historical attribution: Doug Fetter Software Wizardry, with older metadata attributing the file to MIDIMAN, Inc.
- Related driver:
usbmm1x1.sys
The DLL is not a normal Windows system component. It is also not a generic MIDI runtime that should be downloaded whenever an audio application reports a missing file.

The original MIDISPORT 1×1 is a one-in, one-out USB MIDI interface. On some older Windows versions, it could operate with basic class-compliant support after being connected. Additional Midiman/M-Audio drivers were needed for features such as multi-client operation and for particular legacy Windows configurations.
What the error usually means
The error generally means that an old MIDI application, Windows MIDI mapping, or driver component is trying to load a file that is no longer present or cannot work with the installed driver stack.
Common triggers include:
- Reinstalling Windows
- Removing an old MIDI driver
- Restoring an old disk image
- Replacing or reconnecting the MIDI interface
- Antivirus quarantine or accidental deletion
- Moving from Windows XP to Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Installing a driver for a similar but different MIDISPORT model
- Leaving behind stale MIDI registration after uninstalling software
Before changing anything, note the exact program showing the error. If the message appears when opening a digital audio workstation, MIDI utility, or old music application, the program may be requesting the legacy driver even though the hardware is no longer connected.
First, confirm that you have the related hardware
Do not begin by searching for the DLL. Confirm that your computer actually uses a Midiman or M-Audio USB MIDI 1×1 device.
Check the physical device
Look for a small USB MIDI interface labeled:
- Midiman USB MIDI 1×1
- M-Audio MIDISPORT 1×1
- MIDISPORT USB MIDI interface
- A related legacy 1×1 model
If you do not own this type of hardware and no old MIDI software is installed, the message may be caused by a stale startup entry or an incomplete application removal.
Check Device Manager
- Connect the MIDI interface directly to the computer.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Also check Universal Serial Bus controllers, Other devices, and Software devices.
- Look for a Midiman, M-Audio, USB MIDI, or unknown device entry.
- Double-click the entry and open the General tab.
- Read the Device status box.
- Open the Driver tab and record the provider, date, and version if shown.
- Open Details, select Hardware Ids, and copy the values for reference.
A yellow warning icon indicates that Windows sees a hardware or driver problem. If the interface does not appear at all, try another USB port and connect it without a hub. If it still does not appear, the problem may be the cable, USB port, or hardware rather than the missing DLL.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete MIDI driver package
This is the most appropriate repair when the device is present and the problem began after a driver removal, Windows reinstall, or hardware change.
Remove the incomplete installation
- Disconnect the MIDI interface.
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Search for M-Audio, Midiman, MIDISPORT, or an older USB MIDI driver entry.
- Select the matching entry and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Device Manager again.
- Select View and enable Show hidden devices.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and Software devices.
- If a greyed-out entry clearly belongs to the old MIDI interface, right-click it and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers to remove driver software for the device, select that option only when you are certain the entry belongs to the old MIDI interface.
- Restart the computer again.
Do not remove unrelated audio devices, motherboard chipsets, or USB controllers.

Install the correct package
Use the original installation disc if you have one, or obtain the driver from the official M-Audio support and downloads area. Search by the exact product name and hardware revision. Do not assume that a package for MIDISPORT Uno, MIDISPORT 2×2, or an Anniversary Edition device will work with the original 1×1.
- Download the driver package for the exact model and Windows version.
- If the download is an archive, extract it to a new folder.
- Right-click the installer and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if present and review the signer.
- Open the Compatibility tab only if the manufacturer specifically documents compatibility mode for that installer.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows when installation finishes.
- Connect the MIDI interface directly to a USB port.
- Return to Device Manager and confirm that the device no longer has a warning icon.
If the installer refuses to run, reports that the operating system is unsupported, or installs without creating a working device, do not copy usbmm1x1.dll into a system folder. The associated driver package may simply be too old for the current Windows release.
When manually hunting through old driver packages and checking several devices, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated or missing drivers and identify what needs attention; its full repair and driver installation functions require the full version. It is optional, and the exact manufacturer package remains the preferred choice for this legacy MIDI interface.
Fix 2: Check whether modern Windows supports the device
A 32-bit user-mode DLL is not the same thing as a complete 32-bit driver stack. Windows 64-bit can sometimes run older 32-bit applications through compatibility layers, but an old kernel driver may still fail because of driver signing, installation rules, or changes in Windows audio and USB behavior.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The historical Midiman package associated with this file targeted legacy Windows versions such as Windows 98, Me, 2000, and XP. That does not establish reliable support for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Use this decision process:
- If the official manufacturer page lists a driver for your exact device and current Windows version, install that package.
- If the page lists only a different MIDISPORT model, do not treat it as interchangeable.
- If the installer works but Device Manager shows a driver error, the old kernel component may be unsupported.
- If the device works only on an older computer, use a supported legacy Windows installation for that hardware.
- If you need dependable current support, replace the interface with a modern class-compliant USB MIDI device.
The original 1×1 could provide basic MIDI operation without the extra multi-client driver on some older systems. If you only need ordinary one-application MIDI input and output, a current class-compliant interface may be a simpler replacement than forcing the legacy package to run.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
If the DLL disappeared immediately after an antivirus detection or cleanup operation, check whether Windows Security quarantined it.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any item associated with the MIDI driver.
- Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error.
- Confirm that it came from a trusted, complete driver package.
- If it is a legitimate detection and you trust the original installer, follow the Windows Security restore and allow steps.
- Reinstall the complete driver package afterward.
- Run another scan.
Do not disable antivirus protection to install a DLL downloaded from an unknown source. If the file appeared unexpectedly outside a known driver directory, treat that as a reason to investigate rather than as proof that Windows deleted a valid file.

- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the MIDI application again.
Microsoft documents the DISM and SFC procedure on its System File Checker support page.
If SFC reports that it repaired files but usbmm1x1.dll is still missing, that result is not surprising. SFC protects Windows components, not every file from a third-party hardware driver.
If the manual DISM and SFC process is difficult to track across several restarts, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what needs attention; repair functions are handled by the full version, and it is not a substitute for the correct Midiman/M-Audio driver.

Sometimes the file exists, but an old program is looking in the wrong place or a stale MIDI configuration is requesting an obsolete component.
Check the reported path
Read the full error carefully. If it names a specific application, identify whether that application is old MIDI software, a recording program, or a device utility.
Do not place the DLL into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- An application folder chosen at random
Those folders serve different purposes, and manual copying can create version mismatches.
Test with another MIDI application
If the interface appears normally in Device Manager, test it with another known MIDI program. If one application fails while another detects the device, reinstall or update the application that reports the error.
Recommended Free Tools
If every MIDI program fails, inspect the driver entry, remove the old package, and reinstall the exact hardware driver.
Test another Windows user profile
A damaged user profile can preserve broken application paths or MIDI settings.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
A driver-support DLL such as usbmm1x1.dll is not automatically a self-registering component. Running:
regsvr32 usbmm1x1.dll
may produce an error stating that the entry point was not found. That does not mean the correct next step is to try a different copy of the DLL.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically instructs you to register that exact DLL and documents that it exposes the required registration function. Microsoft’s regsvr32 command documentation explains the command’s intended use.
Do not download an isolated DLL
Random DLL download sites create several risks:
- The file may contain malware.
- The file may have the wrong architecture.
- The version may not match the driver package.
- The file may be modified or incomplete.
- The associated
.syskernel driver may still be missing. - The MIDI registration and service entries may remain broken.
- Windows may reject the old driver even after the DLL is restored.
The correct source is the original installation media or the official manufacturer support portal for the exact hardware. If no current package supports the device, use a supported older Windows environment or replace the interface.
Understand the related filenames
These names are easy to confuse:
usbmm1x1.dll
This is the user-mode DLL named in the error. It is associated with the Midiman USB MIDI 1×1 driver stack.
usbmn1x1.dll
This is a different filename that appears in some historical MIDI mappings and records. Do not substitute it for usbmm1x1.dll.

usbmm1x1.sys
This is a kernel-mode driver file, not a DLL. If the .sys file is missing or Windows reports a driver-start failure, reinstalling an isolated DLL will not repair the problem.
When to stop repairing the old driver
The hardware is probably unsupported on the current Windows installation when:
- The manufacturer provides no package for your Windows version.
- The installer refuses to run even in documented compatibility mode.
- Device Manager reports that Windows cannot start the driver.
- The device appears only as an unknown USB device.
- The DLL is present but the associated
.sysdriver cannot load. - The interface works only on an older computer.
- Multiple MIDI applications fail after a clean driver reinstall.
At that point, preserve the old setup on a supported legacy Windows installation if the hardware is important, or use a current USB MIDI interface. A replacement that uses Windows’ built-in class-compliant MIDI support avoids dependence on this obsolete DLL.
Frequently asked questions
Is usbmm1x1.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with the old Midiman/M-Audio USB MIDI 1×1 driver package. It is not a standard Windows, DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++ runtime component.
Is usbmm1x1.dll a virus?
The filename itself does not prove that a file is malicious or legitimate. Check its location, digital signature, and source. A copy from a trusted original driver package is different from an unexpected file downloaded from an unknown website.
Will installing Visual C++ fix the error?
Usually not. This is a hardware-driver DLL, so reinstalling unrelated Microsoft runtimes is generally not the correct repair.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Will System File Checker restore it?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files. It does not normally restore third-party Midiman driver files.
Can I copy the DLL into System32?
Do not do that as a first-line repair. The complete MIDI driver also includes installation, registration, and possibly a kernel driver. Copying one file can leave the real problem unchanged.
Will the old driver work on Windows 11?
That is not verified for every original MIDISPORT 1×1 revision. The DLL is identified as 32-bit, and the associated legacy driver may fail on modern 64-bit Windows. Confirm support for the exact hardware before installing.
Why does the error mention usbmm1x1.dll when my device is unplugged?
An old application, startup entry, or MIDI mapping may still be requesting the driver. Remove the obsolete application or driver package, or reconnect the original hardware and install its correct driver.
