gaducrypt.dll Missing: Restore Gadu-Gadu Plugins Safely

If gaducrypt.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, the problem usually belongs to an old Gadu-Gadu or PowerGG installation, not to Windows itself. Restore the original plugin to the application’s plugs folder, or remove the stale PowerGG configuration entry if you no longer use the software.

What this file actually does

gaducrypt.dll is the GaduCrypt encryption plugin for the historical Gadu-Gadu instant-messaging client and the PowerGG extension. It was designed to provide encrypted conversations with compatible clients and used portable cryptographic code derived from OpenSSL.

This is an application plugin, not a Windows system file. It does not ship as part of Windows 10 or Windows 11, and it is not supplied by Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.

The original GaduCrypt instructions place the file in this location:

Gadu-Gaduplugs

PowerGG then loads it through an entry similar to:

plugin=.plugsgaducrypt.dll

The file is associated with old Win32 software. Public historical records identify an old 0.4.14 beta release and archived files, but they do not establish current Windows 10 or Windows 11 compatibility or document a current 64-bit build.

That distinction matters. Installing a Microsoft runtime or copying an unknown DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 will not recreate this application-specific plugin.

Causes and symptoms at a glance

What you notice Most likely cause Best response
PowerGG reports that a plugin does not exist PowerGG.cfg still references the file Remove or disable the stale entry
Gadu-Gadu starts but encryption no longer works The plugin was deleted, quarantined, or moved Restore the matching original plugin
The error appeared after moving the program folder The relative .plugs path no longer matches the folder layout Restore the original layout or reinstall the host
The file disappeared after download or launch Antivirus quarantine or deletion Check Protection History and verify the file’s source
The file exists but will not load Wrong architecture, corruption, or a missing dependency Use the matching old host, replace the file from a trusted archive, and investigate dependencies
The program is no longer used Obsolete software left behind a configuration reference Remove the plugin entry or uninstall the software

Possible messages include:

The program can't start because gaducrypt.dll is missing from your computer.
This application failed to start because gaducrypt.dll was not found.
Error loading gaducrypt.dll. The specified module could not be found.
gaducrypt.dll could not be located.

The last wording is not proof that the file itself is absent. Windows can also display “specified module could not be found” when a dependency needed by an existing DLL is missing.

Fix 1: Identify the program requesting the DLL

Before downloading or copying anything, find out which application is generating the message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the window title and shortcut

  1. Start the program that shows the error.
  2. Read the title bar and the name of the dialog.
  3. Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
  4. On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in.
  5. Note whether the path points to Gadu-Gadu, PowerGG, or another historical compatible client.

If the error appears during startup, also check the notification area near the clock. Old messaging software may continue running in the background even when its main window is closed.

Search for the configuration file

  1. Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Open the folder shown in the shortcut’s Target field.
  3. Search that folder for:
PowerGG.cfg
  1. If you find it, make a backup copy before editing it.
  2. Open the copy with Notepad, not a word processor.
  3. Look for:
plugin=.plugsgaducrypt.dll

If the host application is not Gadu-Gadu, do not assume that downloading the DLL will solve the problem. First identify the program that is trying to load it.

Fix 2: Restore the original plugin to the plugs folder

Use this fix when you still need Gadu-Gadu, PowerGG, or the compatible client.

The safest source is the original GaduCrypt project or an authentic archive of the matching Gadu-Gadu or PowerGG package. Do not use a generic DLL download site. An unknown copy may contain malware, may target a different architecture, or may simply be unrelated to the version of the host application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore the expected folder layout

  1. Close Gadu-Gadu, PowerGG, and any related process.
  2. Open File Explorer.
  3. Navigate to the application’s installation folder.
  4. Confirm that a folder named plugs exists.
  5. If it does not exist, do not create a random system-wide replacement. Reinstall or restore the original host package so its folder structure is recreated.
  6. Place the trusted gaducrypt.dll inside the application’s plugs folder.

The expected arrangement is similar to:

Gadu-Gadu
├── PowerGG.cfg
└── plugs
    └── gaducrypt.dll

The exact parent directory can differ because old software may have been installed in a custom location.

Check the configuration path

  1. Open PowerGG.cfg in Notepad.
  2. Confirm that the line is exactly the relative plugin reference expected by the program:
plugin=.plugsgaducrypt.dll
  1. Save the file.
  2. Start the host application again.

How to tell whether it worked

The original missing-file message should disappear. If the plugin provides a configuration entry or encryption status, confirm that it appears in PowerGG.

If the same error remains:

  • Confirm the file is really named gaducrypt.dll, not gaducrypt.dll.dll.
  • Confirm it is in the application’s plugs folder, not just the main folder.
  • Check that the shortcut’s Start in directory is consistent with the relative .plugs path.
  • Try launching the program from its original installation folder.
  • Check whether antivirus software removed the file immediately after restoration.
  • Verify that the DLL came from the same historical software package rather than from an unrelated archive.

Do not copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those folders are not substitutes for the application’s plugin directory.

Fix 3: Remove the stale PowerGG entry

Use this fix when you no longer need GaduCrypt or the program only complains because an old configuration entry remains.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A historical PowerGG support report describes this exact failure pattern: the configuration referred to a nonexistent plugin at a path ending in Gadu-Gaduplugsgaducrypt.dll.

Remove the entry manually

  1. Close PowerGG and Gadu-Gadu.
  2. Open File Explorer.
  3. Locate PowerGG.cfg.
  4. Copy it to another folder as a backup.
  5. Right-click the original file and choose Open with, then select Notepad.
  6. Find this line:
plugin=.plugsgaducrypt.dll
  1. Delete the line, or comment it out if that configuration format supports comments.
  2. Save the file.
  3. Start the application again.

Disable it through PowerGG

If PowerGG still opens:

  1. Start PowerGG.
  2. Open its configuration or plugin manager.
  3. Find the GaduCrypt plugin.
  4. Clear its enabled checkbox or remove it from the active plugin list.
  5. Apply the change.
  6. Restart the program.

How to tell whether it worked

The program should stop trying to load GaduCrypt. Other features should continue to work, but encrypted conversations provided by this plugin will no longer be available.

If the message still appears, search for additional copies of PowerGG.cfg. The program may be reading a configuration file from a different installation directory or from a shortcut’s working directory.

Fix 4: Repair a moved or partially uninstalled installation

Relative paths are sensitive to the application’s folder layout. If the program was moved from one folder to another, the line plugin=.plugsgaducrypt.dll may now point to the wrong place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore the original layout

  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Record the path shown in Target.
  4. Check the Start in field.
  5. Open the target folder in File Explorer.
  6. Confirm that the plugs folder is below the directory from which the application starts.
  7. If the folder structure is incomplete, reinstall the historical host software from a trustworthy original archive.
  8. Restore the matching plugin into the recreated plugs folder.
  9. Start the application from the repaired shortcut.

Avoid manually mixing files from different releases. An old plugin can depend on the behavior or supporting files of its original host.

If you no longer need the software, remove the stale configuration entry instead of rebuilding the installation.

Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may have quarantined or deleted the file. That does not automatically mean the detection is a false positive. An old unsigned or uncommon plugin deserves careful verification.

Check Protection History

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security.
  3. Select Windows Security.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Under Current threats, select Protection history.
  6. Look for an event involving gaducrypt.dll.
  7. Open the event to review its name, location, and action.
  8. Restore the file only if you trust the original archive and have verified that the file is the expected plugin.

Microsoft explains the available quarantine and restore actions in its Windows Security Protection History guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not turn off antivirus protection just to install a DLL from an unknown website. If the file is detected again, stop and obtain a clean copy from the original project or a known-good backup.

Scan the restored file

After restoring a trusted copy:

  1. Right-click the file.
  2. Select Show more options if necessary.
  3. Select Scan with Microsoft Defender.
  4. Wait for the scan to complete.
  5. Start the host application only if the scan is clear and the source is trusted.

If the file exists but produces an invalid-image error, crashes the host, or triggers a security alert, replace it with a verified copy rather than repeatedly restoring the same file.

Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

The available historical evidence points to an old Win32 plugin. A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit applications, but a 64-bit host generally cannot load a 32-bit plugin into its own process.

There is no documented current 64-bit GaduCrypt build in the public project information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the host application

  1. Right-click the application’s executable.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Details tab and review the available product information.
  4. If the software includes its own documentation or readme file, check whether it identifies a 32-bit build.
  5. Do not infer compatibility from the fact that Windows itself is 64-bit.

The practical fix is to use the matching 32-bit Gadu-Gadu or PowerGG host with the original plugin release. If a newer replacement application is being used, its plugin architecture may not be compatible with GaduCrypt.

If the file is present and the error changes to a dependency or entry-point message, the issue is no longer a simple missing-file problem. Reinstall the complete matching host package rather than replacing individual DLLs at random.

Fix 7: Repair the complete application, not Windows

Because gaducrypt.dll belongs to an application, the most reliable repair is often a clean reinstall of the matching Gadu-Gadu or PowerGG package.

Before uninstalling:

  1. Back up PowerGG.cfg and any other personal configuration files.
  2. Record the current installation folder.
  3. Export or note any settings you need to preserve.
  4. Uninstall the old package through Settings.

To uninstall:

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for Gadu-Gadu, PowerGG, or the compatible client.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Select Uninstall.
  7. Restart Windows if requested.
  8. Reinstall only from a trustworthy original source.
  9. Restore configuration files carefully, checking that they do not recreate the stale plugin entry.

If the original software cannot be obtained safely or no longer works on the current system, remove the obsolete plugin reference and stop using the old component. Testing the historical application inside an isolated virtual machine is safer than exposing a daily-use system to unknown legacy software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Use SFC and DISM only for broader Windows corruption

System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and Management repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore an application plugin such as gaducrypt.dll.

Use them when other Windows features are also failing, or when the problem began after broader system corruption.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the command to finish.
  2. Restart Windows.

Run System File Checker

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart the computer and test the host application.

Microsoft documents these commands in its System File Checker guidance.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not expect SFC or DISM to recreate gaducrypt.dll. If Windows reports that it repaired files but the GaduCrypt error remains, return to the application-specific fixes above.

Fix 9: Check drivers only when the evidence points there

A driver update is not a normal fix for a missing GaduCrypt plugin. Do not update unrelated hardware drivers merely because the error contains the word “DLL.”

Consider drivers only if the failure began alongside graphics, audio, network, or other device problems, or if the application’s own error identifies a driver dependency.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the affected device.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Review the provider, date, and version.
  8. Use Update Driver only when you have a specific device-related reason.
  9. Restart Windows and retest the application.

Do not replace system DLLs when Device Manager shows no relevant device problem.

Manually identifying the correct driver means checking hardware IDs, vendor packages, and architecture. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show the detected results, while driver installation through the full version is optional and cannot substitute for restoring this application-specific DLL.

Why regsvr32 is normally wrong

regsvr32 is used for DLLs that provide registration routines such as DllRegisterServer, commonly in COM components. GaduCrypt’s documented installation method is plugin loading through PowerGG.cfg, not Windows registry registration.

Do not run:

regsvr32 gaducrypt.dll

It will normally fail or be irrelevant. Registering the file does not place it in the required plugs directory and does not repair a missing configuration entry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why Windows Features and runtimes are usually irrelevant

Do not enable random Windows Features or install multiple Microsoft Visual C++ packages as the primary response to this error.

Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET can be relevant when an application explicitly reports one of those dependencies. They do not recreate the GaduCrypt plugin. Likewise, SFC and DISM repair Windows components rather than an old third-party DLL.

The correct order is:

  1. Identify the requesting host.
  2. Check PowerGG.cfg.
  3. Restore the original plugin or remove the stale entry.
  4. Check antivirus quarantine.
  5. Reinstall the complete historical host package if necessary.
  6. Investigate architecture or dependencies only if the error remains.

Avoid generic DLL download websites

Random DLL sites are a poor repair source because:

  • The file may contain malware.
  • The copy may belong to a different release.
  • The architecture may not match the host.
  • The file may be modified or incomplete.
  • Replacing the DLL does not repair a broken PowerGG.cfg path.
  • A missing dependency can remain unresolved.
  • Copying it into a Windows system directory can create a second, misleading problem.

Use the original GaduCrypt project, an authentic archived Gadu-Gadu or PowerGG package, or a known-good backup. Scan restored files and preserve the application’s expected folder structure.

Further recovery options

Try System Restore for a recent broader failure

If the problem began after a recent system change and several unrelated programs also malfunction, System Restore may help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
  2. Open the matching result.
  3. Select System Restore.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the change.
  5. Review the affected programs.
  6. Follow the prompts to complete the restore.

Microsoft describes this process in its System Restore guidance.

System Restore does not guarantee that an old application plugin will return, and it does not make an untrusted DLL safe.

Inspect dependencies if the file exists

If gaducrypt.dll is present but Windows says a module is missing:

  1. Confirm the host and plugin are the same architecture.
  2. Reinstall the complete matching application package.
  3. Check the application’s documentation for required supporting files.
  4. Look for a more specific error naming the missing dependency.
  5. Do not download the named dependency from an unverified DLL site.

A dependency inspection tool can identify what the plugin requests, but the repair should still come from the original application package or a trusted vendor source.

FAQ

Is gaducrypt.dll a Windows system file?

No. It is a historical third-party encryption plugin for Gadu-Gadu, PowerGG, and compatible clients.

Where should gaducrypt.dll be installed?

The documented location is the Gadu-Gadu installation’s:

plugs

It should not be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.

Can I download a replacement from any DLL website?

No. Use the original project, an authentic archived host package, or a known-good backup. Generic DLL sites may provide unsafe, incompatible, or altered files.

Does installing Visual C++ fix this error?

Usually not. This file is an application plugin, not a Microsoft runtime. Install a runtime only when the host’s error specifically identifies that runtime as missing.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I register the file with regsvr32?

Normally no. GaduCrypt is loaded through the host application and its plugin configuration, not through COM registration.

What if I no longer use Gadu-Gadu or PowerGG?

Back up PowerGG.cfg, remove the plugin=.plugsgaducrypt.dll line, or uninstall the obsolete software. Removing the stale reference is safer than restoring a legacy plugin you no longer need.

Does the file support 64-bit Windows?

The public evidence points to an old Win32 plugin and does not document a current 64-bit build. Use a matching 32-bit host, or discontinue the obsolete plugin if it cannot run safely on the current system.

Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file is present?

The message can indicate a missing dependency, incompatible architecture, corruption, or an incorrect application path. Reinstall the complete matching host package and inspect the configuration before replacing more DLLs.
