icr32.dll is a legacy 32-bit OCR component from the TextBridge API, and Windows does not normally install it. If icr32.dll is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, repair the TextBridge-based scanner or OCR application that originally installed it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

Historical TextBridge installations placed the file in a TextBridgebin directory under Program Files. Older scanner suites, OCR programs, and business applications could also embed or call the TextBridge API.
This is not a standard Windows file. It should not normally be restored to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The application that needs it should usually load it from its own installation directory.
The error may appear in several forms:

The wording tells you that the program failed to load a dependency. It does not prove that Windows caused the problem or that the file itself is the only damaged component.

Why the error happens
The most common causes are:
- TextBridge or its parent application was only partly installed.
- A repair or upgrade removed one of the OCR files.
- Antivirus software quarantined the DLL.
- Disk cleanup or manual deletion removed the application file.
- The application directory became corrupted.
- A 32-bit legacy application is being run on a newer Windows installation.
- An incompatible replacement DLL was copied into the program folder.
- The application needs another old component in addition to
icr32.dll.
A scanner driver can also be involved in the wider failure, but replacing a scanner driver will not normally recreate an application-private OCR DLL.
Fix 1: Repair the application that reports the error
Start with the executable named in the error. If the message appears while launching a scanner utility, OCR program, document-management program, or older office application, repair that program first.
Windows 11
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find the scanner, OCR, or document application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If there is no Repair option, open the application’s three-dot menu and choose Uninstall only after confirming that you have the installer, license information, and any required documents or settings.
Windows 10
- Right-click Start.
- Select Apps and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if Windows provides it.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application again.
Some older programs provide their repair option through Control Panel instead:
- Press Windows key, type
Control Panel, and open it. - Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Click the TextBridge-based application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
A successful repair normally restores the DLL to the application’s own folder and allows the program to start. If the same message remains, continue with a complete reinstall rather than copying a random file.
Fix 2: Reinstall TextBridge or the parent program from known-good media
A full reinstall is the most dependable repair when the original installation is incomplete or damaged.
Before removing the program:
- Locate the original CD, OEM recovery media, or authenticated installer.
- Record the application’s license or activation information.
- Export application settings if the program supports that.
- Check whether the scanner requires a matching driver package.
- Close scanner utilities and document-management programs.
Then:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps in Windows 11 or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Run the original installer as administrator by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
- Install the OCR or TextBridge component when the installer offers selectable features.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application before reconnecting or changing other scanner software.
If the installer is on removable media, copy its contents to a local folder first if the setup program fails to read the disc consistently. Do not download icr32.dll separately from a file-repository page. The correct installer should place the matching DLL, supporting OCR files, and any required configuration together.
If the application was bundled with a scanner, the scanner manufacturer’s original recovery media may be more useful than a generic driver download. If there is no authenticated installer, no usable license, and no supported recovery path, replacing the obsolete OCR application is safer than reconstructing its proprietary files individually.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine an old DLL even when the missing file was part of a legitimate historical installation. Do not assume that quarantine proves the file was malicious, and do not assume that it was a false positive.
Windows Security
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Open any entry that names
icr32.dllor the affected application.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are met:
- It came from the known TextBridge or parent application folder.
- The application was installed from trusted original media.
- You are confident the installation has not been tampered with.
- Windows Security offers a restore or allow action for that specific item.
After restoring a quarantined file:
- Update Windows Security.
- Run a full scan.
- Repair or reinstall the parent application.
- Start the application and check whether the error returns.
Do not turn off antivirus protection simply to obtain or copy a DLL. If the file is repeatedly quarantined, leave it isolated until the application and file can be verified through the original vendor or installer.
Fix 4: Check whether the application is 32-bit
icr32.dll belongs to an old 32-bit software environment. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows generally needs its 32-bit dependencies installed alongside the application.

Do not use the presence of SysWOW64 as a reason to copy the file there. Despite its name, that folder contains 32-bit Windows system components. It is not the normal destination for an application-specific TextBridge DLL.
To identify the program requesting the file:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Note the path shown in Target.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Look for a
TextBridge,bin, or application-specific folder. - Check whether
icr32.dllis present there.
If the file exists but the message says it is not designed to run on Windows, or an entry point or ordinal error appears, the file may be the wrong build or architecture. Reinstall the complete application instead of replacing only the DLL.
You can also use Microsoft Sysinternals Process Explorer to identify which running process requests a missing DLL. Download it only from Microsoft, start the affected program, and use the process properties and DLL view to inspect the application’s loaded modules. The executable path is often more useful than the DLL name because it identifies the product that needs repair.
Fix 5: Repair the scanner driver only when the scanner is also failing
A damaged or incompatible scanner driver can prevent the parent application from working, but it is not normally the source of icr32.dll. Repair the driver when the application opens but cannot detect the scanner, fails during a TWAIN operation, or stops after selecting the scanning device.

Reinstall through Device Manager
- Disconnect the scanner if Windows identifies it incorrectly.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the scanner.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the scanner driver supplied for the exact scanner model.
- Reconnect the scanner when the installer requests it.
- Test the scanner in the original application.
Do not install a driver merely because the icr32.dll error mentions scanning. The application’s own reinstall remains the definitive repair for a missing TextBridge component.

Fix 6: Use DISM and SFC only for Windows corruption
System File Checker and DISM repair Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party DLL installed in a TextBridge or scanner application directory.
Use them when Windows itself is unstable, built-in applications are also failing, or you have evidence of component-store corruption.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application.
DISM repairs the Windows image, while SFC checks protected Windows resources. Neither command should be expected to recreate icr32.dll. If both commands complete successfully and the same application still reports the missing file, repair or reinstall that application.

Fix 7: Try compatibility settings for an obsolete application
Older TextBridge software may not have been designed for current Windows releases. Compatibility settings can help an application start, but they cannot supply a missing DLL.
- Right-click the application’s main executable or shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose the Windows version documented by the application, if known.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the program requires it.
- Click Apply, then OK.
- Start the application.
If the error still says icr32.dll is missing, reinstall the application in compatibility mode:
- Right-click the original installer.
- Select Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Select a suitable compatibility mode.
- Click Apply and OK.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
Compatibility mode is not proof that the software is supported on Windows 10 or Windows 11. If the vendor no longer supplies an installer or update, a maintained OCR and scanning product may be the practical replacement.
Does regsvr32 icr32.dll fix the problem?
Usually not.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. icr32.dll is identified as a TextBridge API client DLL, not as a documented self-registering COM or ActiveX component.

Do not run this as a generic repair:
regsvr32 icr32.dll
It may produce an error such as a missing entry point, or it may create the impression that registration is required when the actual problem is a missing, mismatched, or damaged application installation.
Use regsvr32 only if the original product documentation specifically instructs you to register that exact file and supplies the correct command. Otherwise, reinstall the parent application.

Do not download the DLL from a random website
Standalone DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware or modified files
- The wrong TextBridge build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A file with incompatible exports
- A DLL that passes the filename check but does not match the application
A copied file may change a “missing” message into an entry-point, ordinal, or “not designed to run” error. It also leaves the rest of the damaged installation unresolved.
The safe sources are the original TextBridge or application installer, trusted OEM recovery media, and an authenticated support package for the exact product. There is no verified current standalone Windows download that should be treated as the normal source for icr32.dll.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Those directories are not general storage locations for third-party application files. Copying the DLL there can create version conflicts and may not help the program, which may specifically search its own installation folder.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET automatically
Those runtimes can be required by some applications, but the icr32.dll message alone does not identify any of them. Install a runtime only when the application documentation or a separate error names that dependency.

Windows Update can deliver operating-system fixes and compatibility updates. It is not normally a source for a historical TextBridge application DLL.
If the file exists but the program still fails
A present DLL is not necessarily a working DLL. Check these points:

- Confirm that the file is inside the application’s own directory.
- Confirm that the error names the same executable you repaired.
- Check whether the DLL was recently replaced manually.
- Reinstall the parent application to restore matching files.
- Look for a new entry-point or ordinal error, which usually indicates a version mismatch.
- Check Event Viewer for application errors or storage problems.
- Check the drive’s health if files repeatedly disappear or become corrupted.
- Test the application with its scanner disconnected to separate the OCR failure from the device failure.
If the file disappears again, review antivirus history before restoring it a second time. Repeated deletion can indicate a security issue or a damaged installation rather than a simple missing-file problem.
FAQ
Is icr32.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is a legacy TextBridge API component associated with Xerox OCR technology and applications that used it. It should not normally be installed as a standard Windows component.
Which program installed icr32.dll?
The most likely source is Xerox or ScanSoft TextBridge, an older scanner/OCR suite, or another application that embedded the TextBridge API. The exact calling program must be identified from the error, shortcut target, installation folders, or process inspection.
Do I need a Visual C++ redistributable?
