“The application was unable to start because compression.dll was not found.” The compression.dll error usually points to a missing or damaged Novell ZENworks for Desktops Remote Management component, not a broken Windows system file.
Which fix applies to you
Use the description that best matches what happened:
- The error mentions ZENworks, Novell Client, Remote Management,
RMSETUP.EXE, or a ZENworks folder: repair or reinstall the matching ZENworks component first. - The error began after antivirus software removed a file: check quarantine and verify the file with your IT administrator before restoring it.
- ZENworks was recently uninstalled or upgraded: complete the uninstall, or reinstall the exact legacy package. Do not replace only one DLL.
- The file exists but Windows says “The specified module could not be found”: a dependency may be missing. Repair the complete ZENworks installation.
- You no longer use ZENworks: remove the obsolete product instead of downloading
compression.dll. - Windows has other system-file problems: run DISM and SFC as secondary checks. They will not normally recreate this third-party file.
- The program is a modern consumer application with no ZENworks connection: verify the executable path before changing anything. A random DLL download is especially likely to be the wrong file.
What compression.dll is
Available vendor documentation associates compression.dll with ZENworks for Desktops, specifically its Remote Management component. The component was designed for managed Windows workstations and was installed through the Novell Client, Application Launcher, a login script, or RMSETUP.EXE.
Novell documented this ZENworks generation for Windows 95/98 and Windows NT/2000 workstations. That history matters: a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 machine may still contain an old ZENworks deployment, but the legacy agent is not automatically compatible with every modern Windows configuration.

compression.dll is an application DLL, not a normal Windows component. It should not normally be copied into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Some third-party listings report file metadata such as a version, size, or architecture, but those values are not confirmed here by a current Novell file manifest. Do not use a listing’s version or bitness as proof that another copy is safe.
First, identify what is calling the file
Before repairing anything, capture the context of the error.
Check the executable and folder
- Reproduce the error.
- Note the complete message, including the name of the application or executable.
- If the message provides a path, write it down.
- Open File Explorer and inspect the directory containing the executable.
- Look for references to:
ZENworksNovellRemote ManagementRMSETUP.EXENovell Client- Check whether
compression.dllis present beside the executable or in a ZENworks-related folder.
Do not move the file during this check. Its original location helps identify the owning product.
Check whether ZENworks is still installed
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Select OK.
- Review the installed-program list for Novell Client, ZENworks, or a related workstation-management component.
- Also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps on newer Windows versions.
If the error appears during startup, open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Startup apps, and look for a ZENworks or Novell entry. Do not disable managed software on a corporate computer without approval.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the matching ZENworks component
This is the most likely solution when the error identifies ZENworks or a legacy managed-workstation agent.
The correct source is the organization’s original ZENworks installation media, deployment share, or approved legacy package. Novell’s documented installation path used the ZENworks for Desktops product CD and WINSETUP.EXE, followed by the ZENworks installation option. Remote Management could then be deployed through the Novell Client, Application Launcher, login script, or RMSETUP.EXE.
If your organization still manages the PC
Contact the administrator who manages the Novell Client or ZENworks deployment. Ask for the matching Remote Management package rather than a standalone DLL.
The administrator may need to:
- Confirm the ZENworks release assigned to the workstation.
- Confirm the Windows version and whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Remove a partial installation if the installer is damaged.
- Redeploy the complete workstation agent or Remote Management policy.
- Restart the workstation after deployment.
- Confirm that the ZENworks service or agent starts without the error.
Do not substitute a file copied from another machine unless the administrator has verified that both systems use the same ZENworks release and package. Even then, repairing the complete installation is safer because the named DLL may depend on other files.
If you have approved installation media
- Close the affected program.
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Insert the organization’s ZENworks media or connect to the approved deployment share.
- Run the official installer, such as
WINSETUP.EXE, using Run as administrator. - Select the option to install or repair ZENworks.
- Select the Remote Management component if the installer offers component choices.
- If the package uses
RMSETUP.EXE, run it only from the approved ZENworks source. - Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the program or service that previously failed.
If the installer reports that it cannot load a DLL:
- Close the installer.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
%TEMP%. - Select OK.
- Delete temporary files that Windows allows you to remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official installer again as administrator.
Novell’s installer troubleshooting guidance uses this type of cleanup and restart sequence for a generic DLL-loading failure. If the error returns, verify that compression.dll exists in the approved installation media and that the installation source is complete.
How to tell whether the repair worked
The repair is successful when:
- the ZENworks installer completes without a DLL-load error;
- the affected service or agent starts;
- the original application no longer reports
compression.dll; - the file is present in the product’s expected directory;
- Windows Event Viewer no longer records the same startup failure.
If the error names a different DLL afterward, do not keep copying individual files. That pattern usually indicates an incomplete package, a missing dependency, or an incompatible legacy component.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Security software can quarantine an application DLL. That does not prove the file is malware, and it does not prove the file is safe. Establish its source first.
Review Microsoft Defender history
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
compression.dll, ZENworks, or the affected executable. - Open the event details.
- Record the detection name, file path, and action taken.
If a corporate security product is installed, review its quarantine or history console instead.
Restore only after verification
Do not restore the file blindly. Ask the administrator to confirm:
Rank #2
- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
- the file came from the organization’s ZENworks package;
- the path matches the expected ZENworks installation;
- the package is intended for that workstation;
- the file’s signature or hash matches the approved source;
- the exact ZENworks version is correct.
If the file is verified, restore it through the security product, then immediately repair or reinstall the complete ZENworks component. If the product quarantines it again, stop restoring it and escalate the detection.
A ZENworks support case involving a different DLL demonstrates why antivirus removal can produce this failure pattern, but it does not prove that every compression.dll detection is legitimate.
Fix 3: Repair the complete installation, not just the named file
A message such as “Error loading compression.dll. The specified module could not be found” can mean either that the named file is missing or that one of its dependencies is missing.
Use the ZENworks installer or the organization’s repair process to restore the complete component. This is preferable to copying only compression.dll.
Also check:
- Whether the file is in the product directory expected by the executable.
- Whether the executable and DLL came from the same deployment package.
- Whether a recent cleanup utility removed application files.
- Whether imaging restored an older ZENworks configuration.
- Whether an interrupted upgrade left old and new components mixed together.
- Whether the affected process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET merely because a DLL error appears. Install a runtime only when the application vendor or an actual dependency error identifies it as necessary. Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ packages are for applications built with Microsoft Visual C++; there is no evidence that compression.dll itself is one of those runtime libraries.

Fix 4: Decide whether to remove obsolete ZENworks
If the computer no longer belongs to a ZENworks-managed environment, reinstalling the old component may create more problems than it solves.
Before removing it, confirm with the organization that the machine no longer requires:
- the Novell Client;
- Workstation Manager;
- ZENworks Remote Management;
- login-script deployment;
- Application Launcher;
- ConsoleOne-managed policies.
If removal is approved:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or run
appwiz.cpl. - Select the Novell or ZENworks entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Check Task Manager > Startup apps for leftover entries.
- Reproduce the original action that triggered the error.
If the uninstaller is incomplete or fails, do not delete random DLLs or registry entries. Ask the administrator for the approved cleanup procedure or reinstall the matching package first, then remove it cleanly.
Fix 5: Check Windows components with DISM and SFC
Because compression.dll is associated with ZENworks rather than Windows, DISM and SFC are secondary checks. They can repair protected Windows components, but they will not normally restore a third-party ZENworks file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRun DISM first:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Then run System File Checker:
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft documents DISM and SFC in its System File Checker repair guidance.
If both commands report that Windows files were repaired but compression.dll is still missing, return to the ZENworks repair. If they report no integrity violations, that also does not clear the ZENworks installation.
When manually comparing DISM and SFC results, hunting through logs and repeating scans can make it unclear what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies; its repair features are handled by the full version, and it is optional rather than a requirement for repairing ZENworks.
Fix 6: Check compatibility, architecture, and drivers
Legacy ZENworks components were documented for older Windows platforms. A component that worked on an older managed workstation may not load correctly after an operating-system upgrade or on a different architecture.

- whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit;
- whether the failing executable is 32-bit or 64-bit;
- the ZENworks release;
- the exact installation path;
- the source of the installation package.
Do not assume that a 32-bit DLL can be replaced with a 64-bit copy, or that a file from another ZENworks release is interchangeable. A 32-bit application normally needs its compatible 32-bit dependencies, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows.
Update a relevant device driver only when evidence points there
A missing compression.dll is not normally a driver problem. Use Device Manager only if the same incident includes hardware errors, an operating-system upgrade, or a device that stopped functioning.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider and driver date.
- Use Update Driver only with an approved driver source.
- Restart Windows and retest.
Do not use a driver update to replace a ZENworks application repair. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers, while actual driver installation through its full version is optional; the ZENworks package remains the definitive fix for this DLL.

Downloading compression.dll from a DLL website
Avoid this. A downloaded copy may have:
- the wrong ZENworks release;
- the wrong architecture;
- altered or malicious contents;
- missing companion files;
- a different expected installation path;
- no relationship to the executable producing the error.
It may suppress one message while leaving the damaged installation unresolved. The safe source is the organization’s original ZENworks media, approved deployment share, or verified package supplied by the administrator.

Copying it to System32
Do not copy compression.dll to System32 or SysWOW64 just because a generic guide recommends it. Application DLLs normally belong with the product that loads them. Changing a system directory can create version conflicts and makes later troubleshooting harder.
Running regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general repair command.
Do not use this as a default fix:
regsvr32 compression.dll
If the file is a runtime or private application library, the command may report that the entry point is missing. It will not restore missing dependencies or repair an incomplete ZENworks deployment. Microsoft explains the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 reference.
Enabling Windows Features
Opening Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off is not a normal fix for compression.dll. Do not enable legacy .NET, SMB, or other Windows features unless the ZENworks administrator or application documentation specifically requires them.

Information to collect before escalation
For a managed or legacy workstation, provide the administrator with:
- the complete error text;
- the executable that displays it;
- the executable and DLL paths;
- whether
compression.dllexists anywhere on the machine; - the ZENworks or Novell Client version;
- the Windows edition and version;
- whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit;
- antivirus quarantine history;
- recent uninstall, upgrade, imaging, or cleanup activity;
- relevant Event Viewer entries.
To open Event Viewer:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
eventvwr.msc. - Select Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an event at the time of the failure.
- Copy the application name, faulting module, and event details.
FAQ
Is compression.dll a Windows file?
No. Available evidence associates it with the Remote Management component of Novell ZENworks for Desktops. It should not normally be restored with SFC, copied to System32, or treated as a standard Windows runtime.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which ZENworks generation is associated with it?
The strongest documented association is with the ZENworks for Desktops 3.2-era Remote Management component. Modern ZENworks releases should not be assumed to ship this exact file.
Should I download a replacement DLL?
No. Use the original ZENworks installation media, approved deployment package, or an administrator-verified source. A standalone download can be unsafe and often does not include the dependencies that caused the failure.
Does antivirus quarantine prove the file is malware?
No. It may be a false positive or an application-file removal, but you must verify the file’s provenance, signature, hash, path, and ZENworks version before restoring it.
Will installing Visual C++ fix the problem?
There is no evidence that compression.dll is itself a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file. Install a runtime only when a verified dependency error or the application vendor identifies it as required.

Usually not. Registration is relevant only when the DLL exposes the required registration entry point. It does not repair a missing dependency or incomplete ZENworks installation.
What if I no longer use Novell or ZENworks?
Have the obsolete product removed cleanly through the approved uninstall process. Do not keep replacing DLLs for software the computer no longer needs.
