You may see “This application failed to start because scap.dll was not found,” “The file scap.dll is missing or corrupted,” or “scap.dll could not be located.” A scap.dll error normally points to a damaged or incomplete Ulead PhotoImpact installation, not a missing Windows component.
The 60-second answer
scap.dll is the SCap DLL, an application file associated with Ulead PhotoImpact. It is not part of Windows, DirectX, .NET, or the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime.
The safest repair is:
- Identify which PhotoImpact installation is failing.
- Check whether
SCap.dllis still in that installation folder. - Check Windows Security Protection History.
- Run PhotoImpact Setup and choose Repair or Modify.
- If repair is unavailable, reinstall the same PhotoImpact edition from your original disc or a legitimate vendor-provided installer.
Do not download a replacement from a random DLL site or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32. A private application DLL normally belongs beside the executable that loads it. A manually copied file can be the wrong build, wrong architecture, or part of a damaged installation that still needs repair.
What is scap.dll?
scap.dll is reported as a “SCap DLL” associated with Ulead PhotoImpact and Ulead Systems, Inc. It is a legacy third-party application component.

The file should normally be located in PhotoImpact’s own installation directory, not in a Windows system directory. PhotoImpact editions and installers can differ, so do not assume that a file from one release is interchangeable with a file from another.
The available evidence identifies scap.dll as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. That fits PhotoImpact’s legacy architecture. A 32-bit PhotoImpact program can run on 64-bit Windows through Windows’ compatibility layer, but the DLL still needs to come from the matching PhotoImpact installation.
What the file is not
There is no reason to treat scap.dll as any of the following:
- A Windows system file
- A Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable file
- A DirectX component
- A .NET runtime file
- A graphics-card driver
- A general-purpose DLL that belongs in
System32orSysWOW64
That distinction matters because reinstalling system runtimes will not normally recreate a missing PhotoImpact file.
Reported error messages
PhotoImpact or Windows may display variants such as:
- “This application failed to start because scap.dll was not found.”
- “The file scap.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “scap.dll was not found.”
- “Cannot find scap.dll.”
- “scap.dll could not be located.”
- “scap.dll error loading.”
- “Cannot register scap.dll.”
The exact wording depends on the PhotoImpact build, Windows version, and whether the loader cannot find the file, cannot read it, or cannot load one of its dependencies. Treat these as reported error variants rather than guaranteed wording for every installation.
Check the affected program before changing anything
Before restoring a DLL, confirm that PhotoImpact is actually the program requesting it.
- Read the full error window.
- Note the application name and executable path, if shown.
- Right-click the PhotoImpact shortcut and choose Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Search the folder and its subfolders for
SCap.dll.
If the error appears while launching an unfamiliar executable, do not assume that it is legitimate PhotoImpact. Identify the parent program first and scan it with Windows Security.
If SCap.dll exists beside the PhotoImpact executable but the error continues, the file may be corrupted, incompatible with that edition, or missing another dependency. If it is absent, repair or reinstall PhotoImpact rather than copying in an unrelated file.
Fix 1: Repair PhotoImpact from its installer
Repair is the best first fix because it restores the application’s original files and preserves the installation structure.

Try Windows’ installed-program repair option
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find the relevant Ulead PhotoImpact or Corel PhotoImpact entry.
- Select it.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, depending on what Windows displays.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows when the maintenance process finishes.
- Launch PhotoImpact again.
If Windows provides only Change, select it and look for a maintenance screen containing Repair or Modify.
Run Setup from original media
If the installed-program entry does not offer repair:

- Insert the original PhotoImpact disc, or mount the legitimate installation package.
- Open the media in File Explorer.
- Right-click
setup.exe. - Choose Run as administrator.
- Select the existing PhotoImpact installation when prompted.
- Choose Repair or Modify.
- Allow Setup to replace missing files.
- Restart Windows.
- Test PhotoImpact.
A successful repair usually means PhotoImpact starts without the scap.dll message. If a different missing file is named next, the installation may have more than one damaged component. Repeat the repair or proceed to a complete reinstall.
Fix 2: Reinstall the same PhotoImpact edition
Use a reinstall when repair is unavailable, fails, or leaves the error unchanged.
Before uninstalling, back up your PhotoImpact projects, presets, templates, and user-created assets. Do not assume that uninstalling will preserve every custom folder.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for PhotoImpact.
- Select the affected entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Complete the uninstall process.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the same edition from the original disc or a legitimate vendor-provided package.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator if Setup does not start normally.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Launch PhotoImpact from its newly installed shortcut.
Do not mix files from PhotoImpact 8, 10, 11, 12, X3, or another edition. A DLL with the same filename may not be compatible with every release.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security Protection History
Antivirus software can quarantine an application file after installation, cleanup, or a later scan. A familiar filename alone does not prove that a quarantined file is safe.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection that shows a PhotoImpact path or
SCap.dll. - Confirm the original file path.
- Check whether it came from your legitimate PhotoImpact installation.
- Restore it only if the detection is demonstrably a false positive and the file’s origin is trustworthy.
Microsoft’s guidance on Protection History warns that allowing a genuinely malicious file can expose the device.
If you cannot verify the file’s origin, do not restore it. Remove the affected PhotoImpact installation, perform a full security scan, and reinstall PhotoImpact from trusted media instead.

After restoring a confirmed false positive, add an exclusion only if you understand the security tradeoff and the installation is trustworthy. A clean reinstall is usually preferable to repeatedly restoring a quarantined file.
Fix 4: Check whether the installation is damaged, not merely missing one file
A missing scap.dll can be the first visible symptom of a wider incomplete installation. This is especially likely after:
- An interrupted PhotoImpact installation
- Moving the program folder manually
- Uninstalling another PhotoImpact component
- Disk cleanup or manual deletion
- Restoring an old program image
- Antivirus quarantine
- Copying the application from another computer
Do not repair the problem by copying only one DLL. The executable, supporting files, registry settings, and application paths may also need to be restored.
If PhotoImpact was moved to another drive, reinstall it to the new location rather than dragging the old folder. Legacy applications often depend on paths and installer entries that File Explorer does not recreate.

scap.dll is reported as a 32-bit DLL, and PhotoImpact is legacy software. That does not automatically prevent it from running on 64-bit Windows, but it does mean that mixing architectures can cause loading failures.
A 32-bit PhotoImpact installation should use the DLL supplied with that installation. Do not copy a file from a 64-bit application, a different PhotoImpact edition, or another computer.
If the error says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” rather than simply missing, possible causes include:
- A damaged DLL
- A mismatched PhotoImpact edition
- A wrong-architecture file
- A missing dependency
- A damaged executable or installation
Run PhotoImpact’s installer repair first. If that does not help, uninstall and reinstall the complete matching edition.

Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 unless the error identifies a registration problem
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL installation command. Microsoft documents it for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.

A missing PhotoImpact file usually needs to be restored by PhotoImpact Setup, not registered globally. Running this command:
regsvr32 scap.dll
may produce an entry-point error or accomplish nothing. It can also confuse the diagnosis by making a missing-file problem look like a registration problem.
Use regsvr32 only when the application’s documentation specifically says that this DLL must be registered and the DLL is known to expose the required registration entry point. For the normal scap.dll error, repair or reinstall PhotoImpact instead.
Fix 7: Run DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption
System File Checker and DISM repair Windows components. They are useful when multiple Windows features are failing, but they are not expected to recreate a missing third-party PhotoImpact DLL.
Use them when you also have symptoms such as broken Windows components, damaged system dialogs, or repeated Windows integrity errors.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test PhotoImpact again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. You can review Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM instructions.

A graphics driver normally does not supply scap.dll, so updating drivers is not the primary repair. Consider drivers only if PhotoImpact starts after the DLL is restored but then crashes during display, capture, printing, or hardware access.
For a graphics or capture-device driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Choose Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Imaging devices, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and driver date.
- Use Update driver or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected PhotoImpact feature.
Do not remove a working driver merely because scap.dll is missing. Restore PhotoImpact first and update hardware drivers only when the remaining error implicates a device or display component.

Fix 9: Use System Restore only if the timing is clear
System Restore can help if PhotoImpact worked recently and the file disappeared after a known installation, cleanup, or system change.

- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Choose Next.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Back up important data.
- Choose Finish.
- Let Windows restart and complete the operation.
System Restore rolls back system settings and installed programs. It is not a substitute for a trustworthy PhotoImpact installer, and it may not restore a private application file reliably. If the error remains, repair or reinstall PhotoImpact.
Why random DLL downloads are a poor fix
Avoid downloading scap.dll from an unverified DLL archive. The file may be:
- The wrong PhotoImpact build
- The wrong architecture
- Modified or malicious
- Missing required dependencies
- Incompatible with your edition
- Unable to repair damaged installer records
Even if copying it makes the first error disappear, PhotoImpact may fail on another file or behave unpredictably. The correct source is the PhotoImpact installer that matches your edition and license.

Is scap.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Ulead PhotoImpact and should normally be restored through the PhotoImpact installation.
Should I copy scap.dll to System32?
No. Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64 by default. Restore it to the matching PhotoImpact directory through repair or reinstall.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix scap.dll?
Usually not. scap.dll is a PhotoImpact application file, not a documented Microsoft runtime file. Install or repair a runtime only when the complete error names a separate runtime dependency.
