Important: This is a historical buying guide based on MSI laptops and pricing from the 2021–2022 buying cycle. The underlying article was published on August 12, 2021, so its prices and availability are not current 2026 recommendations. Remaining listings may be used, refurbished, open-box, or old stock. Verify the exact configuration before buying.

The original guide covered five distinct needs: maximum performance, 4K image quality, 360Hz competitive gaming, mainstream value, and low-cost 144Hz gaming. Its category winners were the MSI GE76 Raider, GE66 Raider, GE76 Dragon TIAMAT, Stealth 15M, and GF75 Thin.

Quick comparison

Category Model CPU GPU Display Memory Storage Historical price
Extreme MSI GE76 Raider Core i9-11980HK RTX 3080 17.3-inch, 1080p, 360Hz 32GB DDR4 4TB SSD About $5,800
4K MSI GE66 Raider Core i9-11980HK RTX 3080 15.6-inch, 4K, 60Hz 32GB DDR4 2TB SSD Just under $3,500
360Hz MSI GE76 Dragon TIAMAT Core i9-11980HK RTX 3070 17.3-inch, 1080p, 360Hz 32GB DDR4 Not clearly specified Just under $3,500
Value MSI Stealth 15M Core i7-11375H RTX 3060 15.6-inch, 1080p, 144Hz 16GB DDR4 512GB SSD Just under $1,400
Budget MSI GF75 Thin Core i5-10300H GTX 1650 Ti 17.3-inch, 1080p, 144Hz 8GB DDR4 512GB SSD Under $1,000

These specifications and prices come from the original TechGuided buying guide. They are historical signals, not current offers.

Best extreme-performance pick: MSI GE76 Raider

The GE76 Raider was the guide’s maximum-performance choice. Its configuration paired an Intel Core i9-11980HK with an RTX 3080, 32GB of DDR4 memory, a 17.3-inch 1080p display running at 360Hz, and 4TB of SSD storage.

msi Katana 15 HX 15.6” 165Hz QHD+ Gaming Laptop: Intel Core i9-14900HX, NVIDIA Geforce RTX 5070, 32GB DDR5, 1TB NVMe SSD, RGB Keyboard, Win 11 Home: Black B14WGK-016US
  • Intel Core i9 HX Power for Elite Gaming: Dominate demanding titles with the Intel Core i9-14900HX and its 24-core hybrid architecture, delivering fast load times, high FPS, and smooth multitasking.
  • GeForce RTX 5070 With Ray Tracing & DLSS 4: Powered by NVIDIA Blackwell, the RTX 5070 delivers stronger ray tracing, higher FPS, faster AI upscaling, and more responsive gameplay—ideal for competitive and cinematic gaming.
  • QHD 165Hz, 100% DCI-P3 for Ultra-Clear Combat: The QHD 165Hz display reveals more detail, reduces motion blur, and boosts visibility in fast-paced games while delivering richer, more accurate colors.
  • Cooler Boost 5 for Sustained Performance: Dual fans and a 5-heat-pipe share-pipe design keep the CPU and GPU cool, maintaining stable frame rates during long gaming marathons.
  • 4-Zone RGB Keyboard + Full Game-Ready Ports: Customize your setup with a 4-zone RGB keyboard and highlighted WASD keys. Includes USB-C Gen 2, HDMI up to 8K, multiple USB-A ports, RJ45, Wi-Fi 6E & Hi-Res Audio.

That combination targeted buyers who wanted a desktop-replacement gaming laptop with very high frame-rate potential. The 360Hz panel made more sense for competitive games than for visually demanding AAA titles, where the GPU may not sustain anything close to 360 frames per second at demanding settings.

The major drawback was its historical price of approximately $5,800. That makes it a showcase configuration rather than a sensible default recommendation. It is also a large, heavy-class laptop, and the original source did not provide standardized testing for battery life, noise, thermals, or display measurements.

Choose it if: maximum historical configuration, large-screen gaming, and a 360Hz esports display matter more than price or portability.

Skip it if: you want value, frequent travel, or a balanced laptop for ordinary 1080p gaming.

Best 4K pick: MSI GE66 Raider

The GE66 Raider was the visual-quality choice, using the same Core i9-11980HK and RTX 3080 pairing with a 15.6-inch 4K display capped at 60Hz. The listed configuration included 32GB of DDR4 memory and a 2TB SSD, at a historical price just below $3,500.

Its defining advantage was sharpness rather than motion speed. A 4K screen is better suited to cinematic single-player games, media, image work, and users who value pixel density. The trade-off is substantial: rendering at 4K places much more demand on the GPU than rendering at 1080p.

Rank #2
msi Thin 15 15.6” 144Hz FHD Gaming Laptop: Intel Core i7-13620H, NVIDIA Geforce RTX 4050, 16GB DDR4, 512GB NVMe SSD, WiFi 6E, Win 11: Black B13VE-2678US
  • Slim, lightweight design for everyday portability: Easy to take between home, class, and work with a portable chassis that fits into backpacks and shared desk setups.
  • Intel i7-13620H + RTX 4050 for strong gaming and multitasking: Power through popular games, streaming, schoolwork, and creative apps with a balanced processor and GPU built for fast performance.
  • Fast, smooth 1080p gaming on a 144Hz display: The 15.6" FHD 144Hz panel delivers crisp, fluid motion in esports and action games for a responsive, immersive experience.
  • 16GB RAM + 512GB NVMe SSD for quick loads and smooth switching: Games, apps, and browser tabs stay responsive throughout the day with fast DDR4 memory and a high-speed SSD.
  • Cooler Boost keeps performance steady during long sessions: MSI’s advanced thermal design helps maintain smooth gameplay and reliable performance during gaming, studying, or work.

An RTX 3080 laptop does not guarantee 60 frames per second in every modern game at 4K, particularly with ray tracing enabled. Actual results depend on the game, settings, laptop power limit, cooling, and upscaling features.

Choose it if: image detail and a sharper desktop or gaming view are more important than ultra-high refresh rates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skip it if: you mainly play competitive shooters and want the lowest-latency, highest-refresh experience.

Best high-refresh option: MSI GE76 Dragon TIAMAT

The GE76 Dragon TIAMAT offered the same 17.3-inch 1080p/360Hz display format as the extreme GE76, but used an RTX 3070 instead of an RTX 3080. It also listed the Core i9-11980HK and 32GB of DDR4 memory, with a historical price just below $3,500.

For competitive gaming, 1080p is a more practical match for a 360Hz panel than 4K. The lower resolution gives the GPU a better chance of producing high frame rates, although whether a particular game can approach 360Hz still depends on the title and graphics settings.

The original article did not clearly specify the storage capacity, so it should not be assumed that every GE76 Dragon TIAMAT listing has the same SSD configuration. Check the exact SKU.

  • Next-Level RTX Graphics: Powered by the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 8GB GDDR7, this 18 inch gaming laptop delivers ultra-realistic ray tracing and AI-accelerated frame rates, giving you a decisive competitive edge in every match.
  • Blazing Memory and Storage: With 16GB DDR5 5600MHz dual-channel RAM and a rapid 1TB NVMe SSD, the msi gaming laptop ensures near-instant game launches, fluid level transitions, and plenty of room for your entire library.
  • 240Hz Winning Display: The MSI Crosshair 18 showcases an 18” QHD+ (2560x1600) IPS panel with a 240Hz refresh rate and 100% DCI-P3, making fast-paced action buttery smooth and every detail razor-sharp.
  • Pro-Grade Gaming Gear: Battle with precision on the SteelSeries 24-zone RGB anti-ghosting keyboard, get immersed in quad Dynaudio speakers, and dominate online with Intel Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, Thunderbolt 4, and RJ45 LAN — all engineered into this powerful MSI Crosshair 18 gaming laptop.

Choose it if: esports performance and a large 360Hz screen are your priorities, but the RTX 3080 GE76 configuration is too expensive.

Skip it if: you primarily play demanding AAA games at maximum visual quality or need a portable laptop.

Best mainstream value: MSI Stealth 15M

The Stealth 15M was the most broadly sensible model in the original list. It combined a Core i7-11375H, RTX 3060, 16GB of DDR4 memory, a 512GB SSD, and a 15.6-inch 1080p/144Hz display for a historical price just below $1,400.

That configuration targeted mainstream 1080p gaming rather than extreme refresh rates or 4K rendering. A 144Hz panel is a useful middle ground: smoother than 60Hz, more achievable than 360Hz, and generally less expensive than flagship display configurations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 512GB SSD may fill quickly once several large games are installed. Buyers should also check the exact model’s storage and memory expansion options, because the Stealth 15M name covers more than one configuration.

The original guide mentioned an Acer Nitro 5 as a cheaper historical alternative and an ASUS ROG Strix G17 as a more expensive alternative with a stronger CPU. Those price comparisons are dated and should not be treated as current market advice.

msi Crosshair 18 HX AI 18" 2560x1600 240Hz Display Gaming Laptop, Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX (24 Cores, 2.1-5.4 GHz), NVIDIA RTX 5070 8GB GDDR7, 32GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, Windows 11 Home
  • Elite Processor & Memory: Intel Core Ultra 9 Processor 275HX with 24 cores and turbo boosts from 2.1 to 5.4 GHz, combined with 32GB (16GB x 2) DDR5 5600MHz RAM for superior multitasking, gaming, and content creation performance.
  • High-Speed Storage: 1TB NVMe Solid State Drive for ultra-fast boot times, quick file access, and massive storage capacity, with no optical drive for a sleek, modern design.
  • Immersive 18" Display: QHD+ (2560x1600) resolution IPS panel with 240Hz refresh rate and 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, delivering smooth, vibrant visuals ideal for gaming, video editing, and professional work.
  • Powerful Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 with 8GB GDDR7 memory, enabling advanced ray tracing, AI acceleration, and high-frame-rate rendering for stunning graphics in the latest games and applications.
  • Enhanced Communications & Audio: Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX211 and Bluetooth 5.3 for reliable wireless connectivity, a 720p HD webcam with privacy shutter for secure video calls, and premium 2x Dynaudio 2W speakers plus 2x 2W woofers for rich, immersive sound.

Choose it if: you want the best balance in this historical group between 1080p performance, portability, price, and refresh rate.

Best budget option: MSI GF75 Thin

The GF75 Thin was the entry-level choice, with a Core i5-10300H, GTX 1650 Ti, 8GB of DDR4 memory, a 512GB SSD, and a large 17.3-inch 1080p/144Hz display. Its historical positioning was below $1,000.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The large display and 144Hz refresh rate were attractive for the price, but the GTX 1650 Ti was substantially behind the RTX 3060, RTX 3070, and RTX 3080 models in this list. It is better suited to older, lighter, or less demanding games and may require reduced settings in newer AAA releases.

The 8GB memory configuration is the clearest weakness. It is a limited starting point for a modern gaming system, so confirm whether the exact SKU supports a RAM upgrade. The same applies to the 512GB SSD.

Choose it if: the laptop is heavily discounted and you prioritize a large 17.3-inch screen over long-term performance.

Skip it if: you expect demanding new games, want ray-tracing support, or cannot upgrade the memory.

4K versus 360Hz: which display is right?

Priority Better fit Why
Sharp image quality and cinematic games 4K/60Hz Higher pixel density produces a more detailed image, but requires considerably more rendering power.
Competitive esports 1080p/360Hz Very high refresh rates can improve motion clarity when the game produces very high frame rates.
General gaming and value 1080p/144Hz It offers a practical balance of smoothness, GPU demand, and price.

A 360Hz panel is not automatically better than a 4K panel. It is useful only when the game and laptop can produce sufficiently high frame rates, and many players will see most of the practical benefit from 144Hz or 165Hz at a lower cost. Conversely, 4K can look excellent while still requiring compromises in quality settings or upscaling to maintain smooth performance.

How large is the performance gap?

The broad hierarchy is straightforward: the RTX 3080 configurations were the high-end choices, the RTX 3070 GE76 Dragon TIAMAT sat below them but remained a high-tier 2021 gaming option, the RTX 3060 Stealth 15M targeted mainstream 1080p gaming, and the GTX 1650 Ti GF75 occupied the entry-level position.

Do not turn that hierarchy into guaranteed frame-rate figures. Laptop GPUs with the same name can perform differently because of power limits, cooling, BIOS settings, memory configuration, and chassis design. The original guide also did not include a standardized frame-rate table, temperature testing, fan-noise testing, battery testing, or display measurements.

What to verify before buying

These are model families rather than consistently documented complete model numbers. Retail listings can substitute different displays, RAM capacities, SSDs, or regional keyboards under nearly identical product names.

  • Exact SKU: Match the complete model number, not just “GE76,” “GE66,” “Stealth 15M,” or “GF75.”
  • GPU power limit: A laptop RTX 3060, 3070, or 3080 is not defined by the GPU name alone.
  • Display: Confirm resolution, refresh rate, brightness, color coverage, and response time.
  • RAM: Check capacity, whether it is soldered, the number of modules, and upgrade limits.
  • Storage: Confirm the installed SSD and whether a second drive slot is available.
  • Performance features: Check MUX-switch or display-routing behavior if competitive gaming is important.
  • Practical details: Verify webcam resolution, keyboard layout, RGB configuration, operating-system edition, weight, and charger size.
  • Condition: Determine whether the listing is new, refurbished, used, open-box, or marketplace stock.
  • Protection: Confirm warranty coverage and the return policy, especially for old inventory.

For current MSI models, use the official MSI laptop product index as a starting point. It should not be treated as proof that a historical configuration is still available.

Historical verdict

  • Best maximum-performance configuration: MSI GE76 Raider.
  • Best 4K experience: MSI GE66 Raider.
  • Best competitive-gaming choice: MSI GE76 Dragon TIAMAT, or a 360Hz GE76 Raider configuration.
  • Best overall value: MSI Stealth 15M.
  • Best budget MSI: MSI GF75 Thin, only at an appropriately low price and preferably with upgradeable memory.

These are category conclusions from the original 2021 guide, not results from a new standardized test. In 2026, compare any surviving example with newer hardware at the same price, and treat an old listing’s battery health, warranty, condition, and exact specification as decisive.
