wshext.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not a file that should normally be downloaded separately. It is the Microsoft Shell Extension for Windows Script Host, part of Microsoft Windows Script Host (WSH).
Which fix applies to you
Use this list to start with the path that matches your symptoms:
- Several programs or Windows components are failing: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- Only one installer, utility, game, or older application fails: Repair or reinstall that application after checking Windows.
- The error began after Windows Update, antivirus activity, or a cleanup tool: Check update history, Defender Protection history, and System Restore.
- The file exists but Windows reports a registration or class-activation error: Check its architecture and investigate COM registration. Do not begin with
regsvr32for a simple missing-file message. - The file is outside the Windows directory or has no valid Microsoft signature: Treat it as suspicious and scan the computer.
- You found a website offering a replacement DLL: Do not use it. A manually downloaded file can be malicious, mismatched, or incompatible with your Windows installation.
What wshext.dll does
Windows Script Host lets Windows run scripts through components such as:

An installer, legacy administration utility, login script, or application launcher may invoke Windows Script Host without making that relationship obvious. If the component is missing or damaged, the error may appear to belong to the program you were trying to open.
The file belongs to Microsoft Windows, not to Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, a graphics driver, or a particular game. Reinstalling those packages is not a general repair for wshext.dll.
On 64-bit Windows, the usual locations are:
%windir%System32wshext.dll
%windir%SysWOW64wshext.dll
The names are counterintuitive. System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files used by 32-bit applications. Do not copy a file from one directory to the other.
File versions and availability vary by Windows release, architecture, language, and servicing level. Historical inventories list examples including 5.812.10586.0, 5.8.9600.17415, 5.8.9600.16384, and 5.7.0.18068, generally shown with a size of about 0.1 MB. These are examples, not a complete Microsoft-supported version list.

Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair when wshext.dll is missing, corrupted, or rejected as an invalid Windows file. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and System File Checker then uses that repaired source to restore protected files.
Install pending Windows updates
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- In Windows 11, choose Windows Update. In Windows 10, choose Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the program again.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Run DISM, then SFC
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. It can appear paused for a while.
- When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the program that produced the error.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM supplies the files required for the repair.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. If the error disappears, no manual DLL replacement is needed.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation source. Replace the example path with the correct source location:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Do not use an installation source from a different Windows edition or an unrelated build.

Running these commands repeatedly without recording what changed makes troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; its repair functions require the full version, and it is optional rather than a requirement for repairing wshext.dll.
If SFC cannot repair the file
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files:
- Restart the computer.
- Run DISM again.
- Run
sfc /scannowagain. - Review the CBS log if you need the exact repair failure.
- If the problem remains, use System Restore or an in-place Windows repair.
Do not replace the file with a download simply because SFC reports a failure.

If only one program fails, the program may have an incomplete installation, a broken launcher, or an incorrect reference to Windows Script Host. Windows may be healthy even though that application is not.
Repair a Store or supported Windows application
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If Repair does not help and the option is available, select Reset. Reset may remove the application’s local settings.
Repair a traditional desktop program
- Open Start and type
Control Panel. - Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer’s instructions.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
For a game, use the launcher’s own Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files command. The wording and location depend on the launcher.
If repair fails, uninstall the affected program, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer or account. If the error appears only in that program, reinstalling that program remains the definitive application-level fix.
Fix 3: Identify the program responsible
The full error dialog often names the executable that requested wshext.dll. Record that name before closing the message.
You can also check:
Event Viewer
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Choose Filter Current Log in the right-hand pane.
- Review errors created at the time of the failure.
- Look for the application name, faulting module, and exception details.
Reliability Monitor
- Open Start.
- Type
reliability. - Select View reliability history.
- Select the day when the error occurred.
- Expand application failures and Windows failures.
- Note the program listed immediately before the problem.
This distinction matters. A Windows-wide failure points toward DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or recovery. A failure tied to one application points toward application repair or reinstallation.
Fix 4: Check both system directories and the file signature
First check whether Windows has the file in its normal locations.

- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
where wshext.dll
dir "%windir%System32wshext.dll"
dir "%windir%SysWOW64wshext.dll"
SysWOW64 may not exist on 32-bit Windows. An absent result is not, by itself, permission to copy a replacement from another computer.
Check the location in File Explorer
- Press Windows key + E.
- Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar. - Find
wshext.dll. - Right-click it and choose Properties.
- Check the Details tab for the Microsoft Windows Script Host description.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab if present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid Microsoft signature.
Repeat the check in %windir%SysWOW64 when that directory exists.
A file with the correct name is not automatically genuine. An unsigned copy, a copy in a user-download folder, or a copy in an application directory deserves further investigation.
Microsoft’s Sigcheck utility can display file version and signature information. For example:
sigcheck -m "%windir%System32wshext.dll"
Use the matching path when checking the 32-bit copy.

Defender may have quarantined the file after a scan, or a security product may have removed a suspicious copy.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security in Windows 11, or Update & Security in Windows 10.
- Select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the error began.
Do not automatically restore a quarantined file. Restore or allow it only when you have confirmed that it is the genuine Microsoft-signed system file and the detection is a confirmed false positive. Microsoft warns that restoring a real threat can expose the computer.
If malware is plausible:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
- Select Scan now and save your work when prompted.
The computer restarts and scans before normal Windows processes load.
Fix 6: Check Windows Features without changing unrelated components
Windows Script Host is integrated into Windows and is not normally repaired by enabling a random optional feature. Still, you can check the Windows Features panel if a cleanup tool or administrator may have changed optional components.

- Do not enable or disable features merely because they sound related to scripts.
- Select Cancel unless you have a specific administrator instruction or documented application requirement.
Changing unrelated Windows Features will not replace a damaged wshext.dll. DISM and SFC are the appropriate Windows-component repair tools.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when the evidence points to a driver
A graphics driver or chipset driver is not a general cause of wshext.dll errors. Check drivers only if the triggering application is a hardware utility, the error began after a driver change, or Device Manager reports a problem.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, System devices, or Printers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the Device status message on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab to review the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver only when a suitable update is available from the device manufacturer or Windows Update.
- Restart Windows and test the affected application.
Do not remove a working driver just because wshext.dll is missing. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; driver installation through its full version is optional, and a driver update is not a substitute for repairing Windows or reinstalling the affected application.
Why regsvr32 is not the first fix
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It calls a DLL’s DllRegisterServer entry point, and many ordinary libraries do not provide that function.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchwshext.dll is a special case because public file inventories show registration exports including DllRegisterServer and DllUnregisterServer. Registration is relevant only when the exact error indicates a broken COM registration or class activation. It is not the normal response to “file missing,” “not designed to run on Windows,” or “could not be loaded.”
After repairing Windows and confirming the correct architecture, the matching commands are:
%windir%System32regsvr32.exe %windir%System32wshext.dll
For the 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows:
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe %windir%SysWOW64wshext.dll
Use the 64-bit regsvr32 with the 64-bit file and the 32-bit regsvr32 with the 32-bit file. A registration error usually means the wrong tool, wrong file, insufficient permissions, or deeper component damage. Repair Windows rather than repeatedly registering the file.
Fix 8: Use System Restore or Windows repair
Use System Restore when the problem started after a system modification, update, cleanup utility, or security-product action and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Type
restore point. - Select Create a restore point.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and updates.
- Complete the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore normally rolls back system files and settings without removing personal files.
On Windows 11, the following repair option may be available:

- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where the option is supported.
If that option is unavailable or does not resolve the problem, use an in-place Windows installation repair with matching official installation media. If Windows remains unstable, back up personal files before considering more extensive recovery.

Why downloading wshext.dll is unsafe
Random DLL download sites pages may provide:
- Malware or a tampered file
- A 32-bit file for a 64-bit program, or the reverse
- A file from a different Windows release
- An outdated or incompatible build
- A DLL that does not match the component store
- A replacement that hides the real application or malware problem
Copying a DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can also create version and registration conflicts. The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows component repair, official Windows installation media, and the affected application’s official installer.
Preventing another wshext.dll error
- Keep Windows updated and restart after major servicing operations.
- Keep Microsoft Defender or another trusted security product active.
- Do not use registry cleaners or “DLL fixer” utilities that replace system files.
- Install legacy utilities and script-driven applications only from their official sources.
- Keep backups before system cleanup or major software changes.
- Record the full error and triggering executable instead of immediately downloading a replacement file.
FAQ
Is wshext.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is the Microsoft Shell Extension for Windows Script Host and ships as part of Microsoft Windows Script Host.
Is wshext.dll a virus?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. A file with the same name outside the normal Windows directories, or one without a valid Microsoft signature, may be unsafe and should be scanned.
Should I install Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not as a general fix. Those packages do not repair a missing or damaged Windows Script Host component. Identify the program producing the error and repair Windows or that application.
Should I copy wshext.dll from another computer?
No. Windows versions, servicing levels, architectures, and component files may differ. Use DISM and SFC or an official Windows repair source.
Do I need both System32 and SysWOW64 copies?
On 64-bit Windows, Windows normally maintains separate 64-bit and 32-bit system locations. Do not create or replace one by copying from the other.
What if the error says “not designed to run on Windows”?
That message can indicate corruption, an architecture mismatch, or a damaged dependency. Run DISM followed by SFC, check the signature and location, and repair the application that triggers the message.
What information is useful if the error remains?
Record the exact error text, Windows edition and architecture, triggering program, presence of the file in both system directories, signature status, recent updates or antivirus actions, and relevant Event Viewer or Reliability Monitor entries.
