mspmspsv.dll is a Microsoft component used by Windows Media Device Manager, the older Windows layer that lets media software communicate with compatible portable players. If Windows says mspmspsv.dll is missing, corrupted, or cannot be loaded, restore the Windows media components or repair the affected legacy application rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What is mspmspsv.dll
The file is known as Microsoft Media Device Service Provider. It belongs to Windows Media Device Manager, which acts as a broker between media applications and portable devices, including older Windows Media-compatible players and some devices using the Media Transfer Protocol.
A service provider in this system is a COM DLL responsible for communicating with a particular class of device. The surrounding WMDM components handle the application side, content and rights-management components, and device communication. Microsoft describes this architecture in its Windows Media Device Manager documentation.
The file is most relevant to:
- Older Windows versions and legacy media software
- Windows Media Player-related device features
- Portable media players
- Older applications that transfer music or video to a device
- The historical Portable Media Serial Number Service, also called
WmdmPmSp
Historical Windows records associate the file with %WinDir%System32. That location is useful when checking an existing installation, but the correct repair is to restore the owning Windows component. Copying a DLL from another computer can introduce a mismatched build or architecture.

Microsoft does not publish a current, complete file-level support matrix for mspmspsv.dll. Do not assume that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation contains the file, or that a version listed on a third-party file page is the universal correct version.
Quick identification

|---|---|
| File | mspmspsv.dll |
| Description | Microsoft Media Device Service Provider |
| Component | Windows Media Device Manager |
| Publisher | Microsoft Corporation |
| Historical location | %WinDir%System32 |
| Associated service | Portable Media Serial Number Service (WmdmPmSp) |
| Typical role | Communication between media software and compatible portable devices |
| Architecture | Do not assume a downloaded 32-bit build is correct for your installation |
| Modern status | Primarily associated with legacy Windows media and device support |
The filename alone does not prove that a file is genuine. A copy in a temporary folder, a user-writable folder, or beside an unrelated executable deserves additional scrutiny.
First fix: restore Windows Media components

Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Apps & features.
- Select Manage optional features.
- Select Add a feature.
- Find Windows Media Player.
- Select it and choose Install.
- Restart Windows.
Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Optional features.
- Select View features.
- Search for Windows Media Player Legacy.
- Select it, choose Next, then Add.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft lists these steps in its Windows Media Player troubleshooting guidance.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
After restarting, repeat the action that caused the error. Open the affected application, connect the portable player, or retry the media transfer. If the message disappears, the missing Windows media feature was the cause.
If Windows cannot find the feature, or installation fails, continue with the Windows edition check below.
Windows 10 or 11 N: install Media Feature Pack
Windows N editions omit Windows Media Player and several related technologies. That includes the Windows Media Player Runtime, Windows Media Format, DRM support, and portable-player transfer functionality. Those omissions can affect software expecting older Windows media components.
To install the package:
- Open Settings.
- On Windows 10, select Apps, then Apps & features. On Windows 11, select Apps, then Optional features.
- Select Optional features if it is not already displayed.
- Choose View features or Add a feature.
- Search for Media Feature Pack.
- Select it and choose Install.
- Restart Windows when installation finishes.
Use Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack instructions for Windows 10 and 11 N editions if the package is not visible or Windows presents edition-specific instructions.

Repair corrupted Windows components with DISM and SFC
If the media feature is installed but the file is missing or damaged, Windows itself may have component-store or protected-system-file corruption. An interrupted update, storage problem, cleanup utility, or damaged Windows component can cause this.
Run DISM first, then SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Leave the Command Prompt window open until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that supplies replacement files. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies where possible. Microsoft documents this order in its System File Checker repair guidance.
A successful SFC result says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. Test the original application or device connection after restarting.
Outbyte PC Repair can show what is wrong when manually repeating DISM and SFC leaves you guessing about which component changed; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is handled by the full version, and it is not required for this fix.
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found
First, make sure Windows Update is working and that the computer has a reliable internet connection. Restart Windows and run the DISM command again from an elevated Command Prompt.
If DISM still fails:
- Run Windows Update from Settings > Windows Update.
- Install available updates.
- Restart.
- Run DISM again.
- Run
sfc /scannowagain.
If SFC says it could not repair some files, keep the DISM and SFC results. Check the disk and Windows Update next. Do not replace mspmspsv.dll with a random download.
On Windows 11, you can also use the supported repair reinstall:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings, subject to Microsoft’s requirements. The option is documented in Microsoft’s guide to reinstalling the current version of Windows.
Repair the application that reports the error
Not every mspmspsv.dll message means the Windows installation is damaged. A single older application may have been installed incompletely or may expect WMDM files that its installer did not register correctly.
Use this order:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings.
- If neither option exists, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the original vendor or installation media.
- If the program has a launcher with Verify, Repair, or Verify files, run that function before reinstalling.
If only one program fails and Windows Media Player and other media features work normally, repairing or reinstalling that program is more targeted than changing system directories.

Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because mspmspsv.dll is missing. Those are separate platforms. Install them only when the application identifies a separate missing dependency or its vendor specifically requires them.
Check the old device and its driver
If the message appears only when connecting an older media player, camera, or portable device, the trigger may be the device stack rather than Windows Media Player itself.
Check Device Manager
- Connect the device.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Portable Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and Other devices.
- Look for a warning icon or an entry that appears only after connecting the device.
- Right-click the relevant entry.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Install any offered driver.
- Restart Windows and reconnect the device.
If the device is listed but malfunctioning:
- Right-click it in Device Manager.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Disconnect the device.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect it and allow Windows to detect it again.
Do not remove unrelated USB, storage, or chipset devices. If the device requires a vendor driver or synchronization application, obtain that package from the device manufacturer.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through many driver versions; its free scan shows outdated drivers, while driver installation is handled by the full version, and the original device manufacturer remains the preferred source for a device-specific package.
What success looks like
The device should appear without a warning icon, Windows should detect it consistently, and the media application should open or begin synchronization without the DLL message. If the device is not detected at all, the problem may be the cable, USB port, device firmware, or an obsolete protocol rather than mspmspsv.dll.
Interpret the exact error message
“mspmspsv.dll was not found”
Windows or an application requested the file and could not locate it in the expected component or application path. Enable the relevant media feature, then run DISM and SFC.
“The file mspmspsv.dll is missing or corrupted”
The file may be absent, damaged, or accompanied by a damaged dependency. Restore it through Windows Media components or the affected application. SFC is appropriate after DISM.
“Error loading mspmspsv.dll. The specified module could not be found”
This does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may have found the file but failed to load another dependency required by it. Repair the Windows media components and the application before considering any registration command.
“mspmspsv.dll is not designed to run on Windows”
This usually indicates a corrupt binary, wrong architecture, or incompatible historical build. It is not normally fixed by registering the file. Restore the matching Windows or application package.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“Cannot register mspmspsv.dll”
Registration may be unnecessary, or the file may not expose the registration entry point expected by regsvr32. Check the Windows media installation and system integrity first.

Should you use regsvr32
Windows Media service providers are COM DLLs, and historical Windows installation procedures did register this file. However, registration is not the first repair for a missing or corrupted file, and Microsoft does not provide a universal registration procedure for every historical build.
Only consider registration when:
- The correct file came from the matching Windows or application package
- The application vendor specifically instructs you to register it
- The file is in its expected trusted location
- You know whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
Do not run regsvr32 against a DLL downloaded from an unknown site. A DLL may not export DllRegisterServer, and registration cannot repair a missing dependency or an incompatible binary.
Verify whether the file is legitimate
If the file exists, inspect it instead of trusting its name.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the file location reported by the error or application.
- Right-click
mspmspsv.dll. - Select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab if present.
- Review the signer and signature status.
- Check the Details tab for the description, which should identify the Microsoft Media Device Service Provider when the file is the expected component.
A historically expected location is %WinDir%System32, but a path alone is not proof of authenticity. Treat copies in %Temp%, a user profile, a download folder, or an unrelated game directory as suspicious.
If antivirus quarantined the file:
- Open Windows Security or your installed security product.
- Open Protection history or Quarantine.
- Review the detection details and original path.
- Do not restore it solely because the filename looks familiar.
- Update the security product and run a full scan.
- Restore it only after confirming the path, signature, and detection are a false positive.
If the file is outside a normal Windows or trusted application directory, scan the system before attempting any repair.
What if the error appears during Windows Setup
A copy error during Windows XP-era Setup is different from a missing-DLL message after Windows is installed. If Setup says it cannot copy mspmspsv.dll, suspect installation media, an optical-drive or USB read problem, defective memory, or storage trouble.
Try the following:
- Recreate or replace the installation media using a known-good source.
- Try another optical drive or USB port where applicable.
- Disconnect unnecessary external devices.
- Check the target drive for errors.
- Test memory if Setup reports multiple apparently unrelated file-copy failures.
- Retry the installation.
Do not solve a Setup copy failure by downloading the DLL and placing it on the installation media. The underlying media or hardware problem may damage other files as well.

Do not download a replacement DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong historical build, or the wrong architecture. Even a clean file may not match the Windows component store, may lack required dependencies, or may not be registered correctly.
The safe sources are:
- Windows Optional Features
- Media Feature Pack for Windows N
- Windows Update
- DISM and SFC
- The original application vendor
- Microsoft installation or repair media
Do not copy one file into both system folders
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native system components and SysWOW64 supports 32-bit compatibility files. The names are confusing, and copying a historical 32-bit DLL into both locations does not make it compatible. Restore the file through the matching package instead.

Do not assume the filename proves Microsoft ownership
Malware can use a familiar filename. Check the path, signature, and provenance, especially when the file was found outside the Windows directory.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET do not specifically restore Windows Media Device Manager. Installing them can add clutter without addressing the actual problem.

Frequently asked questions
Is mspmspsv.dll a virus?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows Media Device Manager component. A file with that name is not automatically legitimate. Verify its location, signature, and source.
Does Windows Media Player install it?
It is associated with the Windows Media Device Manager stack and older Windows media features. A current Windows installation may not expose the same historical file set, so do not assume that reinstalling the modern Media Player application alone will restore it.
Is it part of Windows or a third-party application?
It is a Microsoft Windows media component, although a third-party legacy application may depend on it. If only one program reports the error, repair that program as well.
Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?
Historical public records include a 32-bit build, but there is no authoritative current version and architecture matrix for every Windows release. Do not choose a replacement based on a download page’s architecture label.
Should I use System Restore?
Use System Restore when the problem began after a recent driver, update, cleanup operation, or software installation and a suitable restore point exists. Open Start, search for Create a restore point, select System Restore, choose a point from before the failure, and follow the wizard. Save work first.
When is an in-place repair appropriate?
Consider an in-place repair when DISM and SFC cannot restore Windows components, Windows Update remains damaged, and the error affects multiple applications. On supported Windows 11 installations, try Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now first. Keep backups before any larger repair.
