mplvpx.dll is a 32-bit component called MPL Video Library, associated with Ligos Corporation. If Windows says it is missing, cannot be loaded, or was not found, repair or reinstall the older video application that originally installed it.
Do not begin by downloading a loose copy of mplvpx.dll and placing it in System32. The file is not established as a current Windows component, and copying an unrelated DLL can leave the application with the wrong version, architecture, or dependencies.
What mplvpx.dll is
mplvpx.dll is an application DLL used by legacy multimedia or codec software. Public file records identify it as:
- Description: MPL Video Library
- Publisher commonly reported: Ligos Corporation
- Architecture: 32-bit Win32
- Reported size: approximately 1.07 MB
- Metadata version: commonly reported as
0.0.0.0
The exact parent application cannot be identified from the filename alone. One documented software inventory lists the file with Broderbund MovieShop and other Ligos MPL and GoMotion components. That confirms a real legacy-software association, but it does not prove that every copy came from MovieShop.

It is not established as a DLL shipped by current Windows, Windows Media Player, System32, or SysWOW64. Old reports mentioning Windows Media Player 9 or an “MPL LOADER” do not establish that current Windows versions use this file.
What the error means
You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because mplvpx.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because mplvpx.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting mplvpx.dll.”
- “Error loading mplvpx.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “mplvpx.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages usually mean one of four things:
- The DLL was deleted or quarantined.
- The parent application was partially uninstalled or damaged.
- The application was moved, cloned, or restored incompletely.
- The DLL is present, but another library it needs is missing.
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that mplvpx.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to find one of its dependencies.
Fixes for mplvpx.dll errors
Work through these fixes in order. The first repair is the most important because this file belongs to legacy application software rather than normal Windows system files.
1. Identify the program requesting mplvpx.dll
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
First determine which program is displaying the error.

Read the title bar and the first line of the message. The application name may appear there. Also note whether the error occurs:
- When launching a video editor or media tool
- When opening an old project
- During Windows startup
- After connecting an external drive
- After uninstalling another application
- When launching a game or installer
If the error appears only when one particular program starts, that program is the likely owner.
Check Task Manager startup entries
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an old media application, codec manager, updater, or entry marked Unknown.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and select Open file location, if available.
- Record the program name and folder. Do not delete the entry yet.
Check Event Viewer
- Press Win + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Select an error recorded at the time the DLL message appeared.
- Read the Faulting application name and Faulting module name fields.
If the program was removed but its startup entry remains, disable the orphaned startup entry after confirming it is no longer needed. If you can identify the original application, continue with the next fix.
2. Repair or reinstall the parent application
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
This is the most likely solution. Restore the complete application rather than replacing only mplvpx.dll.

For an application listed in Windows settings:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the program associated with the error.
- Select the three dots beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s settings or local data. For older desktop programs, these controls may not appear.
Use Programs and Features for older desktop software
- Press Win + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find the related media or video program.
- Select it.
- Choose Change, Uninstall/Change, Repair, or Modify, depending on what the installer provides.
- Choose Repair or Modify.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If no repair option exists, reinstall the program from its original installer, product disc, organization software archive, or a publisher-supported package. Install it to its normal location and restart before testing it.

For a game, use the launcher’s own Verify files, Repair, or equivalent function. The menu name varies by launcher. A launcher repair is preferable to copying a DLL into a Windows folder.
What success looks like
The application should open without the mplvpx.dll message. The repaired installation should also restore related MPL or codec files. If the same error returns immediately, the installer may be incomplete, the file may be quarantined, or another dependency may be missing.

3. Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may have removed the DLL, especially after a cleanup or detection event.
In Microsoft Defender:
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the application stopped working.
- Expand a relevant detection.
- Confirm the file path and the application that owned it.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- The file came from a trusted original installation.
- The application itself is legitimate.
- The file path belongs to that application.
- You have scanned the original installer and application folder.
If Defender or another security product continues to detect the file, do not repeatedly override the warning. Reinstall the complete application from a trusted source and contact the software vendor or administrator if the detection remains.
After restoring a trusted file, run the application again. If it is immediately removed again, the file may be corrupted, tampered with, or incompatible with the security product’s current rules.
4. Reinstall the application instead of copying the DLL
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
A missing file often indicates that the application installation is incomplete. This can happen after:
- Uninstalling related media software
- Running a disk-cleaning utility
- Restoring a backup incompletely
- Moving the application folder
- Cloning Windows to another drive
- Restoring an old system image
- Installing a patch over a damaged installation
Before reinstalling, back up the application’s projects and settings if they are stored outside the program folder.
Then:
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or from Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer as administrator by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
- Keep the default installation directory unless the application documentation requires another location.
- Start the program from its installed shortcut.
Do not place a downloaded mplvpx.dll in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The correct location is normally chosen by the application installer.
5. Check 32-bit compatibility and dependencies
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
mplvpx.dll is a 32-bit DLL. A 32-bit application can use it on 64-bit Windows, but the application must receive the correct 32-bit file and any required 32-bit dependencies.

A 64-bit replacement is not interchangeable with a 32-bit DLL. Likewise, copying a file from another computer may produce a version mismatch even when the filename is identical.
Check the application architecture by examining its installation folder or documentation. A 32-bit program is commonly installed under:
C:Program Files (x86)
That path is a clue, not an absolute rule.
If the file exists in the program’s folder but the program still reports that it cannot be loaded, another dependency may be missing. Reinstall the complete parent application first. If that fails, use a reputable dependency-analysis tool or the software vendor’s support process to identify the missing library.
Do not assume that installing DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++ will restore mplvpx.dll. Those packages do not directly supply this Ligos file.

6. Use Windows Features only when the application requires them
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Some old multimedia applications depend on optional Windows components, but enabling features at random will not recreate mplvpx.dll.
To inspect optional components:
- Press Win + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the available Windows Features.
- Enable a feature only when the application’s documentation specifically requires it.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable legacy components merely because the DLL error mentions video. If the original application has an installer option for codecs or media components, use that option instead.
7. Check Device Manager only for a related hardware symptom
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
mplvpx.dll is an application library, not a normal device driver. Device Manager will not normally restore it. However, a damaged video or capture-device driver can cause separate problems in an old media application.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and any category related to your hardware.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Update driver.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Use the hardware manufacturer’s supported driver when Windows Update does not provide one. Do not replace mplvpx.dll as a substitute for a missing device driver.

8. Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Use Windows repair commands when you also have signs of damaged Windows components, such as multiple built-in applications failing, update errors, or corrupted system files. These commands normally will not recreate a third-party Ligos DLL.

Microsoft recommends installing current Windows updates and restarting first. Then:

- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command should be expected to restore an application-owned mplvpx.dll.

Time needed: 20–45 minutes
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after an installation, cleanup, update, or security action.
- Press Win + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select an appropriate restore point.
- Select Scan for affected programs, when available.
- Review the applications and drivers that will be changed.
- Continue only if the restore point predates the failure.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs. It does not normally remove personal files. It may restore the application’s files and configuration, but it cannot help if no suitable restore point exists.
Do not use regsvr32 routinely
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs that provide a DllRegisterServer entry point. A codec or runtime library such as mplvpx.dll may not support that function.
Running this command:
regsvr32 mplvpx.dll
may produce an error saying that the module loaded but DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not prove the file is missing, and repeating the command will not repair the parent application.
Only use regsvr32 when the application’s official instructions specifically require registration for that particular DLL.

Avoid sites offering isolated copies of mplvpx.dll. A downloaded file may:
- Contain malware
- Be the wrong architecture
- Have a different build or incompatible metadata
- Be missing required companion libraries
- Come from an unknown modification of the original file
- Leave the actual application installation damaged
The safe sources are the original application installer, trusted product media, an organization’s verified software archive, or a publisher-supported package. There is no established current official Ligos download page for this legacy file.

Likely causes and the correct response

If the original application is obsolete
Some legacy video programs no longer have a maintained installer or support channel. If repair and reinstallation fail:
- Confirm that the application is the program requesting the DLL.
- Preserve its project files and any activation information.
- Look for original product media or a verified organizational archive.
- Check whether the software runs in a compatible older Windows environment.
- Consider moving the work to a supported replacement application.
- Restore a known-good system image only when you need the entire previous installation.
Do not keep replacing individual DLLs indefinitely. If the program depends on obsolete codecs or undocumented components, a clean supported environment may be safer than modifying the current Windows installation.
FAQ
Is mplvpx.dll a Windows system file?
It is not established as a current Windows system component. It is a 32-bit MPL Video Library file associated with legacy Ligos multimedia software.
Which program installed it?
The filename alone cannot identify every parent application. Broderbund MovieShop is one documented association, but other old video applications or codec bundles may also have used Ligos components.
Why does a 32-bit program need it on 64-bit Windows?
A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit programs. Those programs still require 32-bit DLLs, including the correct 32-bit version of mplvpx.dll and its dependencies.
