daccom.dll is a legacy Microsoft DTC administration DLL, so the safest fix is usually to repair or reinstall the older application or MTS/IIS component that requested it. Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website, because the file may be malicious, incompatible, or missing the other components the program needs.

What this file actually does

The file is described as “MS DTC COM interfaces for administration DLL.” It is associated with Microsoft Transaction Server and the early administration tools surrounding Distributed Transaction Coordinator, or MSDTC.

That history matters. daccom.dll is not a normal Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET component. Historical Microsoft server and IIS installation media included it with MTS-era files. Current Microsoft DTC documentation instead identifies files such as msdtc.exe, msdtcui.dll, and msdtcprx.dll, not daccom.dll.

In practical terms, a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should not automatically be expected to contain this legacy file. Its absence often means that an old server application, COM or MTS component, or abandoned startup entry is still trying to launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A message mentioning daccom.dll can mean any of the following:

  • The file was never installed with the application.
  • An old MTS, IIS, or server component was only partially removed.
  • An upgrade or failed installation deleted supporting files.
  • Antivirus software quarantined the file.
  • The named DLL exists, but another dependency is missing.
  • The application is too old for the current Windows version.
  • The actual failure concerns the MSDTC service rather than this DLL.

Causes and symptoms

What you see Most likely cause Best first action
Error appears when one old application starts Incomplete application installation Repair or reinstall that application
Error began after removing IIS, MTS, or a server tool Orphaned component or startup entry Restore or remove the original component cleanly
Error began after security software detected a file Quarantine Check Windows Security Protection history
“The specified module could not be found” Missing dependency, not necessarily daccom.dll Check the caller and its dependency chain
Error appears after a Windows update Compatibility or damaged Windows components Use System Restore, DISM, and SFC where appropriate
Several transaction-based programs fail MSDTC service or configuration issue Check the Distributed Transaction Coordinator service
Only a 32-bit legacy program fails Architecture or old runtime mismatch Reinstall the matching application package
Error appears at every startup after uninstalling software Orphaned startup entry Remove the entry instead of downloading the DLL

Fix 1: Identify the program requesting daccom.dll

Start with the application named in the error. The program that displays the message is not always the original owner of the DLL, so confirm its executable path.

Check the shortcut

  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Read the Target field.
  5. Note the executable name and its installation folder.
  6. Open that folder and check whether the program has its own repair, setup, or uninstall utility.

If the target points to an old server tool, database utility, IIS administration package, COM component, or business application, repair that product first.

Check installed applications

  1. Press Windows key + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for the program that fails.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the program again.

If Repair is unavailable or does not help, use the original installer and choose Repair, Modify, or Reinstall. Restore the complete application rather than copying only daccom.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Windows 10, use Settings → Apps → Apps & features, select the application, and choose Modify or Repair when the installer provides those options.

Check the application directory

Look for:

  • setup.exe
  • install.exe
  • repair.exe
  • A vendor setup launcher
  • A product-specific configuration utility
  • A readme or deployment folder supplied with the original software

Do not replace a program-owned DLL with a file from another computer. A private DLL in an application directory may be matched to that program’s executable and supporting files.

Check Event Viewer

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Expand Windows Logs.
  4. Select Application.
  5. Select Filter Current Log in the right-hand pane.
  6. Filter for Error and Warning events around the time the failure occurred.
  7. Open entries that mention the application executable, daccom.dll, COM, MTS, or MSDTC.

Record the executable path and any additional DLL name. If the event names another missing module, repair the application or its complete dependency set instead of focusing only on daccom.dll.

If the error happens during startup, open Task Manager → Startup apps and identify the entry. If the original program has already been removed, disable its orphaned startup entry and restart Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the original legacy component

This is the most likely solution when a specific application displays the error.

Dell Latitude 5420 14" FHD Business Laptop Computer, Intel Quad-Core i5-1145G7, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD, Camera, HDMI, Windows 11 Pro (Renewed)
  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
  1. Close the affected application.
  2. Disconnect from any unnecessary network or production service if this is an old server tool.
  3. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  4. Find the application associated with the error.
  5. Use Repair or Modify if available.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Launch the program and repeat the operation that produced the error.

If repair fails:

  1. Locate the original installation media or installer from the software’s trusted owner.
  2. Check whether the installer supports the current Windows version.
  3. Back up the application’s configuration and data.
  4. Uninstall the damaged application.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Run the original installer as an administrator.
  7. Apply the application’s supported updates.
  8. Restart again and test it.

For an old MTS or IIS-era installation, the original installation media is more useful than a standalone DLL. The package may also install registry entries, COM registrations, supporting executables, and other libraries required by the administration tool.

There is no verified current Microsoft standalone redistributable documented specifically to install daccom.dll. If the original installer is unavailable, the safer long-term solution may be a supported replacement or a properly isolated legacy virtual machine.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

A legitimate old DLL can be quarantined, but an old file obtained from an unknown source can also be unsafe. Do not automatically restore it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections.
  7. Open any event that names daccom.dll or the affected application.
  8. Confirm the original file path and detection details.

Restore the file only when all of these are true:

  • It came from the original trusted installer or installation media.
  • The file path belongs to the expected application.
  • The application vendor or administrator confirms that it is required.
  • The system has been scanned and no broader compromise is suspected.

If the file came from a DLL download sites website, do not restore or whitelist it. Reinstall the complete application from trusted media instead.

Protection History does not retain events indefinitely, so check it soon after the error appears. After restoring a trusted file, reinstalling the application is still preferable because it can restore related files and registrations.

Fix 4: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore can help when daccom.dll disappeared immediately after a program installation, update, driver change, or component removal.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Review the changes.
  8. Select Next, then Finish.
  9. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system configuration, registry settings, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal documents, photos, or other personal files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Windows cannot start normally, open Windows Recovery Environment, select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → System Restore, and choose the appropriate restore point.

After restoration, avoid reinstalling the software or update that caused the problem until you have confirmed whether it is compatible with the application.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Use these commands when Windows itself may be damaged, especially after an interrupted update or system repair. They are not a guaranteed way to restore a historical application DLL that was never part of the current Windows image.

First install pending Windows updates and restart:

  1. Press Windows key + I.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart the computer.

Then open an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Wait for it to complete. Then run:

sfc /scannow

Do not close the window while either scan is running. Restart Windows when SFC finishes and test the affected application.

Possible results include:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows protected files are probably intact.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, repair or reinstall the application that requests daccom.dll.

Running the commands repeatedly without identifying the caller will not recreate a missing MTS package.

If you want a guided way to review Windows repair findings instead of repeatedly hunting through scan output, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the specific legacy application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the missing file.

Fix 6: Check whether the problem is actually MSDTC

A missing daccom.dll and a broken MSDTC service are different problems. Current MSDTC troubleshooting focuses on the service, Component Services, security configuration, and current DTC executables rather than manually copying this historical DLL.

Confirm that the service exists

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type services.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find Distributed Transaction Coordinator.
  5. Check its Status and Startup type.
  6. If it is stopped, right-click it and select Start.
  7. If it is disabled, open Properties, set an appropriate startup type, and select Start.

Do not change production transaction settings casually. Record the existing configuration before making changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can also inspect DTC through Component Services:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type comexp.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Expand Component Services.
  5. Expand Computers.
  6. Expand My Computer.
  7. Open Distributed Transaction Coordinator.

If the service is missing, repeatedly stops, or reports account and configuration errors, troubleshoot MSDTC itself. Reinstalling MSDTC does not guarantee that it will restore daccom.dll.

From an elevated Command Prompt, Microsoft documents these commands for an actual MSDTC service installation problem:

msdtc -uninstall
msdtc -install

Use them only after recording the existing DTC configuration and only when the service installation is damaged. Reinstalling MSDTC can reset security settings and startup behavior. Restart Windows afterward and reconfigure the service if required.

On supported Windows Server versions, PowerShell also provides:

Install-Dtc -StartType AutoStart

Do not run these commands merely because an old application mentions daccom.dll. First establish that the MSDTC service itself is absent or damaged.

Fix 7: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

Historical listings describe daccom.dll as a 32-bit legacy file, but current Microsoft documentation does not provide a current supported build or universal Windows installation location for it.

On 64-bit Windows:

  • System32 contains 64-bit system components.
  • SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components.

Do not copy the file into both folders. Do not place it in either folder unless the original Microsoft-supported package specifically installs it there. A program may require the DLL in its own directory, and copying it into a system directory can create conflicts with other software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check the affected program:

  1. Open Task Manager.
  2. Select Details.
  3. Start the application.
  4. Find its process.
  5. Right-click the column headings and enable Platform, if available.
  6. Note whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.

A 32-bit application needs its matching 32-bit application package and dependencies. Installing a 64-bit replacement DLL will not correct that mismatch.

If the program is old enough to depend on MTS-era components, test it in a supported replacement environment or an isolated legacy virtual machine rather than weakening a modern Windows installation.

Fix 8: Update drivers only when the evidence points there

A display, storage, network, or chipset driver is not a normal source of daccom.dll. Update drivers only if Event Viewer, Device Manager, or the application vendor identifies a related hardware or driver failure.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, or Storage controllers.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if prompted.

For a clean reinstall:

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the device.
  2. Select Uninstall device.
  3. Select the option to remove the driver package only when you have the correct replacement available.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Install the driver from the computer or hardware manufacturer.

Manually hunting through hardware pages and matching driver packages can be time-consuming, especially when several devices have stale drivers. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show driver problems; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it will not replace the legacy application package that owns daccom.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why manual DLL copying usually fails

Copying daccom.dll from another computer is unreliable because:

  • The file may belong to a different MTS or application build.
  • Its dependent DLLs may still be missing.
  • The application may require COM registrations.
  • Supporting executables may not be installed.
  • The file may be the wrong architecture.
  • A private application DLL may be replaced by an incompatible system copy.
  • The original file may be malicious or modified.

regsvr32 is also not a general DLL repair command. It works only when the DLL provides the registration entry points that regsvr32 calls. There is no authoritative confirmation that daccom.dll must be registered this way.

Use regsvr32 only when the original product documentation explicitly instructs you to register this exact file and identifies the correct architecture. Otherwise, repair the owning application.

When to use a legacy environment

If the software still depends on MTS-era files, it may not be compatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11. Signs include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The original installer cannot run.
  • The application uses obsolete COM or IIS components.
  • Reinstallation completes but the same error returns.
  • The application fails with several old DLL or registry errors.
  • The vendor no longer supports the software.
  • The program works only when run with old compatibility settings.

A supported replacement is the best option. If replacement is impossible, use an isolated virtual machine or legacy server environment where licensing, network isolation, backups, and security controls are properly handled. Do not expose an unsupported operating system directly to an untrusted network.

Frequently asked questions

Is daccom.dll a current Windows 11 system file?

It is a genuine historical Microsoft DLL associated with MTS and early DTC administration tools. Current Microsoft documentation does not establish it as a standard Windows 11 system file.

Can I download daccom.dll separately?

There is no verified current Microsoft standalone download documented for this file. Restore it through the original application, MTS/IIS installation media, or a trusted enterprise deployment source.

Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?

No. The correct location depends on the application and its architecture. Blindly copying files into Windows directories can cause version and dependency conflicts.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will DISM and SFC fix the error?

They can repair damaged protected Windows components. They will not necessarily restore a historical MTS file that is not part of the current Windows image.

Should I run regsvr32 daccom.dll?

Not unless the original product documentation explicitly requires it. regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair tool.

What if the error appears after uninstalling the original software?

Check Task Manager → Startup apps, Task Scheduler, and the application’s remaining folders for an orphaned startup entry. Remove the entry or reinstall and cleanly uninstall the original product rather than downloading the DLL.

What is the definitive fix?

Identify the executable requesting the file, then repair or reinstall that complete application or legacy component. If it cannot run safely on the current operating system, migrate to a supported replacement or isolated legacy environment.
