msdbrptr.dll Missing on Windows: Safe Repair Steps That Work

msdbrptr.dll is a genuine Microsoft Visual Basic 6 Data Report runtime file, and its absence usually means an older application was installed incompletely or lost one of its components. The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the affected program, then install Microsoft’s official 32-bit VB6 runtime update if the application still needs it.

What this file actually does

msdbrptr.dll is the Microsoft Data Report Runtime DLL, Version 6.0. It belongs to MSDataReport, a Visual Basic 6 component used by older applications to generate or display formatted reports.

You may encounter it in legacy:

  • Business and administrative software
  • Accounting applications
  • Inventory and stock-management programs
  • Database front ends
  • Customer-management systems
  • Internal company tools
  • Older reporting utilities

It is not a modern Windows system component, and it is not one of the core Visual Basic 6 runtime files Microsoft says are shipped with Windows. Microsoft classifies it as a supported VB6 runtime-extended file that application developers can redistribute with their programs. The application installer is therefore normally responsible for placing it correctly.

Microsoft’s VB6 support information lists related runtime components, including msdatrep.ocx, msbind.dll, and msstdfmt.dll. A program may need several of these files together. Copying only msdbrptr.dll can leave the application broken if another dependency is missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The file is 32-bit only. On 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11, a 32-bit VB6 application runs through WOW64. There is no native 64-bit version of the VB6 runtime, so installing a supposed 64-bit replacement is not a valid repair.

Microsoft’s official VB6 SP6 Runtime Extended Files update is the x86 package named VB60SP6-KB2708437-x86-ENU.msi. Microsoft’s file manifest lists msdbrptr.dll version 6.1.98.16 in that rollup. Version numbers reported by third-party file catalogues should not be treated as a complete list of Microsoft-supported versions.

Causes matched to symptoms

What you see Most likely cause Best first action
The program says msdbrptr.dll is missing when it starts The application installer omitted or lost the runtime file Repair or reinstall the application
“The code execution cannot proceed because msdbrptr.dll was not found” The file is absent from the application’s expected search path Reinstall from the original installer
“The specified module could not be found” while the DLL exists A dependency of the DLL or application is missing Reinstall the complete application and its runtime components
“Error loading msdbrptr.dll” The file is damaged, incompatible, blocked, or in the wrong location Check quarantine, architecture, and application repair
“Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error” Wrong file, damaged file, or incompatible replacement Remove the downloaded replacement and reinstall properly
Visual Basic run-time error 713 after deployment The Data Report runtime was omitted from the setup package Rebuild or repair the application deployment
The error began after antivirus action The file or a companion file may have been quarantined Review Windows Security Protection history
The application worked until a recent system change A program, driver, update, or registry change may have affected it Use System Restore only if the timing and restore point fit

The exact wording varies between Windows versions and between applications. “Specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application

This is the most likely solution for msdbrptr.dll. The file is an extended VB6 runtime component, so it is commonly installed beside the old application rather than as a general Windows file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the program has a Repair option

  1. Close the affected application.
  2. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  5. Find the program that produces the error.
  6. Select the three-dot button beside it on Windows 11, or select the program on Windows 10.
  7. Choose Advanced options if available.
  8. Select Repair.
  9. Start the application again.

If the program opens and its reports work, the repair restored the missing component.

Some older installers provide their own repair command instead:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Programs and Features.
  4. Select the affected application.
  5. Choose Change, Repair, or Modify.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.
  7. Restart Windows before testing the program again.

If there is no Repair option, use the original setup media or the application vendor’s current installer. Run the installer as an administrator if the vendor’s instructions require it. Do not uninstall first unless you have the installer, license information, database backups, and application settings needed to reinstall safely.

If the program is custom-built

For an internally developed VB6 program, the developer or administrator should rebuild the deployment package. Microsoft’s historical deployment guidance specifically documents failures caused by omitting Msdbrptr.dll from a setup package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The installer should deploy the correct 32-bit runtime files and the application’s documented dependencies. It should not rely on users downloading individual DLLs. After rebuilding the package, uninstalling and reinstalling the program should place the file in the location expected by that application.

If reinstalling the application fixes the error, no DLL registration command is needed.

Fix 2: Install Microsoft’s official VB6 runtime-extended update

Use this step when the original application is known to depend on the VB6 runtime, the installer is unavailable or incomplete, or the program’s documentation directs you to install the Microsoft package.

Microsoft provides the official update through the Visual Basic 6.0 Service Pack 6 cumulative update. The package is an x86 MSI. That is expected even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install the package

  1. Open the Microsoft Download Center page.
  2. Confirm that the download is VB60SP6-KB2708437-x86-ENU.msi.
  3. Download the MSI from Microsoft.
  4. Close the affected VB6 application.
  5. Right-click the downloaded MSI and select Run as administrator.
  6. Follow the installation wizard.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Open the affected application.

If the application starts and its Data Report opens correctly, the runtime update supplied what it needed.

This package is not a universal repair for every old application. It may provide msdbrptr.dll while the program still lacks its own application files, database drivers, ActiveX controls, or other dependencies. If the error remains, repair or reinstall the application as well.

Do not install a 64-bit substitute. VB6 runtime components remain 32-bit and run under WOW64 on 64-bit Windows.

Fix 3: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file

Antivirus quarantine is possible, but do not assume it is the cause and do not immediately create an exclusion. First establish whether the file came from a trusted original installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent detections.
  6. Expand any entry related to the affected application or msdbrptr.dll.
  7. Check the detected file path and action.

If the file was quarantined, verify that:

  • The path belongs to the legitimate application.
  • The program was installed from trusted original media or its vendor.
  • The file is part of the application’s expected deployment.
  • The detection is not a sign of a tampered installer.

If you have confirmed the file’s provenance, Windows Security may offer Restore. Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined item returns it to its original location, and Windows may require you to allow it afterward. If the application installer is available, reinstalling the program is safer than manually restoring a single file because it also replaces missing companion files.

If the file is restored and the application still fails, reinstall the complete application. If Windows Security continues to detect the file, leave it quarantined until the application vendor or administrator confirms the file is legitimate.

Fix 4: Check the application folder and dependencies

A file can exist on the computer and still be unusable. Older programs may expect their runtime files in the application’s own directory or another private deployment location.

Find the application directory

  1. Right-click the program’s shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Select Open File Location.
  5. Look for msdbrptr.dll.

You can also search from File Explorer:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Select This PC.
  3. Search for msdbrptr.dll.
  4. Note every location found.
  5. Do not copy or delete files yet.

If the file exists only in an unrelated directory, that does not prove the application can use it. A program may require an application-local copy, and it may also require companion files such as:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • msdatrep.ocx
  • msbind.dll
  • msstdfmt.dll

The exact dependency set depends on the application. Reinstalling the complete program is preferable to copying files from another computer.

If the message says “specified module could not be found” even though msdbrptr.dll is present, treat it as a dependency problem. Check the application installer, vendor documentation, Windows Security history, and any error log created by the program.

Fix 5: Do not register msdbrptr.dll with regsvr32

regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command. It registers DLLs or ActiveX controls that expose the appropriate registration entry point, such as DllRegisterServer. A runtime library may not expose that entry point.

Running this command blindly:

regsvr32 msdbrptr.dll

can produce an error without fixing anything. It can also lead you to focus on registration when the actual problem is a missing file, missing dependency, wrong architecture, or incomplete application installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some VB6 applications use ActiveX controls such as msdatrep.ocx. If the application vendor specifically instructs you to register an OCX, use the correct 32-bit registration tool on 64-bit Windows:

C:WindowsSysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:PathTomsdatrep.ocx"

Use the actual path supplied by the application installer or vendor. Do not substitute msdbrptr.dll for the OCX, and do not register files merely because a DLL website recommended it.

If registration returns a missing-module error, reinstall the application and its dependencies instead of repeating the command.

Fix 6: Repair Windows component corruption with DISM and SFC

Use Windows repair commands when multiple applications show system-file problems, Windows components are behaving abnormally, or the failure followed system corruption. These commands may repair Windows itself, but they cannot restore an application-local DLL that was never installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.

Run DISM

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish.
  3. Restart Windows.

DISM may take time and may appear to pause. A successful completion reports that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that it could not repair the component store, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run the command again. If it still fails, note the exact error rather than downloading a DLL.

Run SFC

After DISM completes:

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
  2. Enter:
sfc /scannow
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Test the application.

A message stating that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them indicates that SFC changed system files. A message stating that no integrity violations were found means this repair path did not find Windows corruption. In either case, a missing application file still requires application repair or reinstallation.

Repeating SFC without checking what changed is not a substitute for reinstalling the program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When manually running DISM and SFC becomes repetitive and you need a clearer scan of Windows repair issues, Outbyte PC Repair can show what it identifies; its free scan reports findings, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when that program owns the missing file.

Fix 7: Check Windows Update and optional components

Windows Update will not normally install an application’s private VB6 file, but keeping Windows current can resolve compatibility and component problems.

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart when prompted.
  6. Return to Windows Update and check again.

You can also review optional Windows components:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
optionalfeatures
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Review the available Windows Features.
  3. Enable only a feature required by the application’s documentation.
  4. Select OK.
  5. Restart if Windows requests it.

Do not enable random legacy features in the hope that one contains msdbrptr.dll. Windows Features are not a replacement for the application’s VB6 deployment package.

Fix 8: Verify the 32-bit application and driver environment

The file itself is 32-bit, and the affected program should also be a 32-bit VB6 application. A 64-bit version of msdbrptr.dll is not available and cannot be substituted.

If the program uses database hardware, printers, scanners, or another device to generate reports, a driver problem may appear at the same time as a runtime problem.

To inspect drivers:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Printers, Display adapters, Imaging devices, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Look for a yellow warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected device.
  6. Select Properties.
  7. Read the Device status message on the General tab.
  8. Open the Driver tab to review the provider and date.
  9. Use Update Driver only with a driver supplied by Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
  10. Restart Windows and test the application.

A driver update is relevant only when the application’s failure involves a device or database connection. It will not replace a missing msdbrptr.dll.

When checking drivers manually means hunting through several device categories and guessing which version is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported driver issues; its free scan shows findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it cannot replace the application installer when the missing component belongs to a VB6 program.

Fix 9: Use System Restore only after identifying a suitable restore point

System Restore is appropriate when the application worked before a recent installation, update, driver change, or system configuration change, and a restore point exists from before the failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the applications and drivers that may be rolled back.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system settings, installed programs, and registry state while leaving personal files unaffected. It may restore an application installation, but it is not guaranteed to recover a missing application-local DLL. If no suitable restore point exists, return to the original installer rather than selecting an unrelated point.

Why random DLL downloads are a bad repair

Do not download msdbrptr.dll from a random DLL archive or copy it from an unrelated computer. That approach can provide:

  • Malware or a tampered file
  • The wrong version
  • The wrong architecture
  • A file missing required companion components
  • A DLL placed where the application does not search
  • A false sense that the installation is repaired

It can also create version mismatches. An old application may expect a particular group of VB6 runtime files, not just one filename.

Use the affected application’s original installer, a current installer supplied by its vendor, or Microsoft’s official VB6 SP6 cumulative update. Microsoft’s VB6 support policy explains the distinction between runtime files shipped with Windows and runtime-extended files that applications may redistribute.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manual copying is reasonable only when the application vendor directs it or an administrator is rebuilding a known deployment package. It is not the normal consumer repair method.

Frequently asked questions

Is msdbrptr.dll legitimate?

Yes. It is a Microsoft Visual Basic 6 Data Report runtime file associated with MSDataReport. Its presence in an older business or database application is expected. Legitimacy depends on where the file came from, so verify the installer or application source rather than trusting a loose copy.

Does msdbrptr.dll come with Windows?

It is not listed among the VB6 runtime files Microsoft says ship in Windows. It is a supported runtime-extended file that applications may redistribute. The affected program’s installer should normally provide it.

Is there a 64-bit version?

No. VB6 runtime components are 32-bit. On 64-bit Windows, the application runs through WOW64. Installing a supposed 64-bit replacement cannot solve this error.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between msdbrptr.dll and msdbrpt.dll?

They are similarly named but should not be treated as interchangeable. Microsoft’s historical deployment guidance distinguishes Msdbrptr.dll as the Data Report runtime file and Msdbrpt.dll as the similarly named designer component. Use the file required by the application installer.

Should I put the file in System32?

Usually no. A legacy program may expect an application-local copy, and copying files into a system directory does not install dependencies or repair the application. Reinstall the affected program instead.

Do I need regsvr32?

Not for a generic missing msdbrptr.dll error. Use regsvr32 only when an application vendor specifically requires registration of an ActiveX control or another file that supports self-registration.

Why does the error remain when the DLL exists?

The file may be in the wrong directory, damaged, blocked by security software, or unable to load a dependency. The application may also require msdatrep.ocx, msbind.dll, msstdfmt.dll, database components, or other files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does SFC restore this file?

SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It may not restore msdbrptr.dll if the file belongs in an application directory and was never installed there. Use the application installer first.

Final diagnostic checklist

If the application still fails, record these details before contacting its vendor or administrator:

  • The exact application name and version
  • Windows 10 or Windows 11
  • Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • The complete error text
  • Whether msdbrptr.dll exists and where
  • Whether the application was recently reinstalled or updated
  • Whether Windows Security quarantined anything
  • Whether msdatrep.ocx and other documented dependencies exist
  • The result of DISM and sfc /scannow
  • Any relevant Windows Security or application event entry

Start with the original application installer, not a random DLL download. For this particular file, restoring the complete 32-bit VB6 deployment is more reliable than replacing one filename and hoping the old program can find the rest.
