hpomem05.dll Not Found: Repair the Legacy HP Program Safely

Length11 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The application failed to start because hpomem05.dll was not found.” The hpomem05.dll error usually means an older HP application or driver package is damaged, incomplete, or no longer compatible with Windows.

Which fix applies to you

Use the first matching situation:

  • The error names an old HP program, printer utility, scanner tool, or storage application: repair or reinstall that parent program.
  • The error appeared after antivirus activity: check Windows Security Protection history before reinstalling anything.
  • The program was moved, restored from backup, or partially uninstalled: reinstall it to restore its complete folder and dependencies.
  • The file exists but Windows still cannot load it: check its path, architecture, signature, and dependent files.
  • Several Windows programs are failing: run DISM and SFC as system-integrity checks.
  • The problem began after an HP driver or Windows change: update or reinstall the relevant driver, or use System Restore.
  • You found a standalone DLL download: do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64. Use the original HP installer instead.

What is hpomem05.dll

Public file metadata describes hpomem05.dll as a “Hewlett-Packard memory manager module for Windows NT.” It is associated with HP SDS IO and lists Hewlett-Packard Co. as the developer. The available catalogue metadata also identifies it as a legacy 32-bit Win32 DLL, with a reported version of 90.0.1.0 and a size of approximately 40,448 bytes. Those details come from third-party file metadata rather than a current HP support bulletin, so they should be treated as clues, not proof that every copy with those properties is genuine.

There is no verified evidence that hpomem05.dll is part of Windows, DirectX, .NET, or a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. It should not normally be placed in:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

A 32-bit application commonly keeps private DLLs beside its executable. That means the correct copy may have been installed in the HP program’s own directory, not in a Windows system folder.

The exact modern HP product that originally installed the file is not confirmed. “HP SDS IO” is the product association shown by public catalogues, but it does not identify a current printer, scanner, storage utility, or other specific HP package with certainty.

Why the error appears

Windows can show several versions of the same underlying failure:

  • “The application failed to start because hpomem05.dll was not found.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because hpomem05.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading hpomem05.dll.”
  • “hpomem05.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “hpomem05.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

The exact wording depends on the application and on whether the file is absent, damaged, incompatible, or blocked by another missing dependency.

Common triggers include:

  1. An HP application was partially uninstalled.
  2. A cleanup utility removed an old application file.
  3. Antivirus software quarantined the DLL.
  4. The HP program was copied to another drive without its supporting files.
  5. A backup restored the executable but not the complete installation.
  6. A Windows upgrade exposed compatibility problems in old software.
  7. A driver or HP utility was replaced with an incomplete package.
  8. The DLL is present, but the application expects a different architecture or dependent file.

If only one old program produces the message, repair that program first. That pattern strongly suggests an application-private file rather than a missing Windows component.

Fix 1: Identify the program calling hpomem05.dll

Do not begin by downloading the DLL. First find the executable that requests it.

Check the visible error

Read the window title and the text around the error. The affected program may be named there. Note whether it is an HP printer utility, scanner application, storage tool, imaging program, or another legacy application.

If the message appears during startup, write down the exact time and the program you launched. If it appears without an obvious program, continue with Event Viewer.

Check Event Viewer

  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Expand Windows Logs.
  4. Select Application.
  5. Choose Filter Current Log in the right pane.
  6. Select Error under Event level.
  7. Look for an event recorded when the error appeared.
  8. Open the event and note the Faulting application name and Application path.

Event Viewer may not name hpomem05.dll, but the executable path can reveal which HP installation is involved.

Also check:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
  4. Search for HP software installed around the time the problem began.
  5. Record the application name before changing anything.

The full application path is important. A file under an HP program directory should normally be restored through that program’s installer rather than copied from elsewhere.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the HP application

This is the safest and most likely solution.

Try Windows application repair

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Installed apps.
  4. Find the HP application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options.
  7. Select Repair, if available.
  8. Start the affected program again.

Repair normally keeps the application’s settings while replacing damaged installation files. If the error remains, return to the same page and use Reset only if you are comfortable losing the application’s stored settings.

Some traditional desktop programs do not provide Advanced options. In that case:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs > Programs and Features.
  3. Select the HP program.
  4. Look for Repair, Change, or Modify.
  5. Follow the installer prompts.
  6. Restart Windows and test the program.

If no repair option exists:

  1. Uninstall the affected HP application.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Obtain the matching installer from HP’s official Software and Driver Downloads support area or from the original installation media.
  4. Confirm that the package matches the HP device or application.
  5. Install it normally.
  6. Restart again before testing.

Do not install only hpomem05.dll. A complete reinstall restores the executable, configuration, registry entries, private dependencies, services, and the correct file location together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the HP program is no longer listed

The installation may already be partially removed. Search these locations for an HP folder, but do not delete anything yet:

C:Program Files
C:Program Files (x86)
C:ProgramData
C:Users<your-name>AppDataLocal
C:Users<your-name>AppDataRoaming

If you find the old program’s executable, use its original installer or uninstall entry rather than launching a random executable from the folder. If the program is obsolete, reinstalling it may be the only way to restore the missing private files.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus removal is a realistic cause of a missing application DLL, but restoring a quarantined file without checking it can reintroduce malware.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Choose Protection history.
  5. Inspect detections recorded when the HP application stopped working.
  6. Open any relevant entry.
  7. Check the detected file path, publisher information, and threat name.

Do not choose Restore merely because the HP application needs the file. If the detection identifies malware, leave the file removed and reinstall the HP software from a trusted original source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the file was detected in the original HP installation directory and the installer is trusted, scan the installer and the recovered file first. Check the file’s Properties > Digital Signatures tab when a signature is available. A filename and catalogue description alone do not prove that a particular copy is legitimate.

After reinstalling, run a full security scan if Windows Security continues to remove the file.

Fix 4: Verify the file’s path, architecture, and condition

If hpomem05.dll is already present, do not overwrite it immediately.

  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Open file location.
  3. Locate the application’s executable.
  4. Search that folder for hpomem05.dll.
  5. Right-click the DLL and select Properties.
  6. Review the General and Details tabs.
  7. Open Digital Signatures, if present.
  8. Record the full path, file size, version information, and signature status.

A legacy 32-bit DLL is normally used by a 32-bit application. Installing a 32-bit file as a replacement for a 64-bit component will not solve an architecture mismatch, and copying files between unrelated HP releases can create further conflicts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the DLL is in a temporary folder, a downloads folder, or an unexpected Windows directory, do not assume it is the correct file. Reinstall the calling HP program and allow its installer to place the file where the application expects it.

If the file is present but Windows reports that it is corrupted or “not designed to run on Windows,” the problem may be a mismatched version or a missing dependency. Reinstall the complete package rather than replacing the single DLL.

Fix 5: Update or reinstall the related HP driver

If the error began after connecting an HP device or changing its driver:

  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories such as Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, Cameras, Storage controllers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Right-click the affected HP device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab and record the provider and date.
  7. Choose Update Driver.
  8. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  9. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

For a complete replacement:

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the affected device.
  2. Select Uninstall device.
  3. Do not select an option to remove unrelated driver packages unless you know the package is obsolete.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Install the matching driver and software package from HP’s official support area.
  6. Restart and test the application.

Manually hunting through multiple driver packages can make it difficult to tell which version changed the system. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; the full version performs the driver installation, but reinstalling the HP application remains the definitive fix when that application owns hpomem05.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Run DISM and SFC for broader Windows corruption

Use these commands when several applications are failing, Windows reports other missing system files, or the problem followed a failed update. They are secondary checks for this DLL because SFC repairs protected Windows files, not arbitrary files supplied by an HP application.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected HP program again.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command should be expected to recreate an HP-only DLL if the parent application is missing.

Repeatedly running these commands without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and identify repair areas; its full version performs the repair, but reinstalling the HP application remains the definitive solution for an application-owned file.

If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run the commands again. If Windows corruption continues, Microsoft’s supported repair-reinstall process can preserve personal files while refreshing the current Windows installation.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore is useful when hpomem05.dll worked until a driver installation, cleanup operation, HP update, or Windows change.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs.
  5. Review the programs and drivers that will be changed.
  6. Select Close, then Next.
  7. Confirm the restore and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. Afterward, test the HP application before reinstalling other software.

Fix 8: Try compatibility settings for discontinued software

An old HP application may depend on behavior that is no longer supported by the current Windows release.

  1. Right-click the application’s executable or shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Choose an older Windows version.
  6. Select Apply, then OK.
  7. Launch the program again.

You can also select Run this program as an administrator if the application needs permission to access its installation directory. Administrator mode does not replace a missing DLL, and it should not be used as a substitute for reinstalling damaged software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the application still fails, use the original supported Windows environment in a managed virtual machine or an older dedicated computer where appropriate. Do not force a legacy DLL into modern Windows system directories.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It works for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.

A memory-manager or application-private DLL may not export that function. If you run:

regsvr32 hpomem05.dll

and Windows reports that DllRegisterServer is missing, registration is not the fix. Do not keep trying different copies or both System32 and SysWOW64.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only use regsvr32 when the HP application’s official installer instructions specifically require it and the DLL is documented as a COM or ActiveX component. That is not established for hpomem05.dll.

Why DLL download sites are unsafe

A standalone download can be:

  • The wrong architecture.
  • From a different release.
  • Modified or malicious.
  • Missing its dependent files.
  • Unsigned or falsely labelled.
  • Placed in a directory the application does not search.

Copying it into both Windows DLL folders can cause version conflicts and does not repair a damaged HP installation. The safe sources are the original HP installation media, a matching installer obtained from HP’s official support area, or a trusted backup whose origin and integrity you can verify.

Prevention after the repair

  • Keep the complete HP installer with the device documentation.
  • Do not delete old HP folders during disk cleanup unless you know which program owns them.
  • Record the application path before replacing files.
  • Keep Windows Security enabled and review Protection history after an unexpected removal.
  • Avoid copying individual DLLs between computers.
  • Keep legacy HP software isolated if it is no longer maintained.
  • Create a restore point before replacing an old driver or utility.
  • Keep the full error text and calling executable available for future diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

Is hpomem05.dll a Windows system file?

No verified evidence shows that it ships with Windows. Available metadata associates it with legacy HP SDS IO software.

Which HP product installed it?

The exact owning HP product has not been confirmed by current official HP documentation. “HP SDS IO” is the public product association, so identify the calling executable before choosing a replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?

Not as the first fix. There is no verified evidence that this DLL belongs to a Visual C++ package. Install a Microsoft runtime only when the error also names files such as MSVCP*.dll, VCRUNTIME*.dll, or MSVCR*.dll.

Should I copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64?

No. Restore it through the HP application installer. The correct location may be beside a 32-bit application, and copying it into Windows folders can create conflicts.

Why does the error appear only when I start one program?

That program is probably the component that requests the DLL. Its installation may be incomplete even though Windows itself is working normally.

What if the file is quarantined?

Inspect the detection, path, publisher, and threat name in Protection history. Restore it only after establishing that it came from the original trusted HP installation and is safe. Otherwise reinstall the application from a trusted source.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What information should I provide if the error remains?

Provide the full error text, the calling executable name and path, the HP model or software name, your Windows version, the location of any existing copy, and its Properties and Digital Signatures information. That is enough to distinguish a missing private file from an architecture, dependency, compatibility, or security problem.
