hpvdb820.dll is a Hewlett-Packard printer-driver component, not a general Windows runtime. If Windows says that hpvdb820.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the usual problem is an incomplete, damaged, or incompatible HP DeskJet driver installation.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing files, note:
- Which printer is installed: The strongest HP documentation associates this file with the DeskJet 820 and 822 families.
- When the error appears: Record whether it happens while printing, adding the printer, starting the Print Spooler, or signing in to Windows.
- Your Windows architecture: Open Settings > System > About and check System type. It will identify a 64-bit or 32-bit Windows installation.
- Whether the printer is still supported: An old DeskJet may not have a compatible driver for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Whether security software quarantined a file: Check your antivirus quarantine history before restoring anything.
Do not begin by downloading hpvdb820.dll from a DLL download website. A replacement may be the wrong architecture, an incompatible version, or unsafe, and copying it into a random folder often leaves the damaged printer installation untouched.
What hpvdb820.dll does
The file is described as Windows Unidrv Plugin and is associated with Hewlett-Packard Company DeskJet software. It works with the Windows print subsystem rather than with Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or another general-purpose runtime.
HP support material specifically associates hpvdb820.dll with DeskJet 820 and 822 printers. Related DeskJet models covered by the same historical repair discussion use different driver files, so do not assume that every DeskJet needs this DLL.

A missing-file message means that Windows or the print subsystem tried to load the HP component and could not use it. Possible reasons include:
- The driver package was only partially installed.
- The file was damaged or deleted.
- Windows is using the wrong driver architecture.
- Antivirus software quarantined the component.
- The printer driver is incompatible with the current Windows release.
- A stale queue or Print Spooler installation still points to an obsolete driver.
The file may appear under this 64-bit printer-driver path:
%windir%System32spooldriversx643
That is a printer-driver directory. It does not mean that hpvdb820.dll is a core Windows DLL.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the complete HP driver
This is the safest and most likely repair. Reinstalling the complete package restores the correct INF files, catalog files, driver components, and printer configuration instead of replacing one DLL in isolation.
1. Remove the printer
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if it is connected.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected HP DeskJet.
- Choose Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
On some Windows installations, you can also use the older Control Panel interface:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
control printers. - Press Enter.
- Right-click the HP printer and select Remove device.
2. Remove the old driver package
After removing the printer:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
printui.exe /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Highlight the obsolete HP DeskJet driver.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when Windows offers that choice.
- Restart Windows again.
If Windows refuses to remove the package because it is in use, restart the computer, make sure no print jobs are waiting, and repeat the process. You may need to remove old printer queues from Printers & scanners first.
3. Get the correct package
Use HP’s official printer-driver support portal and search for the exact printer model. Select the package for the installed Windows release and architecture if HP provides one.
If HP does not list your Windows version, that is important information rather than a search failure. HP may no longer provide a supported driver for an obsolete DeskJet 820 or 822 on Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Do not substitute a driver for a similar-looking DeskJet model. The related models may use different plugin files.
4. Install and test
- Run the downloaded HP installer.
- Allow it to make changes if Windows displays User Account Control.
- Follow the connection instructions.
- Connect the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the reinstalled printer.
- Choose Print a test page.
The repair worked if the test page prints without the hpvdb820.dll message and the printer remains available after a restart. If the same error returns, continue with the compatibility and Spooler checks below rather than repeatedly copying the DLL.
When manually hunting for a compatible package across old product pages and Windows driver listings becomes the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated driver entries and show what needs attention; its repair or driver installation requires the full version, while reinstalling the exact HP package remains the definitive fix for this printer-specific file.
Fix 2: Restart the Print Spooler
A stale or failed Print Spooler service can make a correct driver appear unusable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRestart it from Services
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and choose Restart.
- Try printing again.
If Restart is unavailable, choose Start. If the service stops immediately or refuses to start, remove stale printer queues and old driver packages before reinstalling the HP driver.
Restart it from an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
net stop spooler
net start spooler
You should see confirmation that the Print Spooler service stopped and then started. Print a test page afterward.
If the second command fails, open Event Viewer by pressing Windows key + X and selecting Event Viewer. Check Windows Logs > System for entries recorded when the Spooler failed. A broken queue, incompatible driver, or permissions problem may need to be removed before the service can start normally.
Fix 3: Check whether Windows is using the wrong architecture
Public file-indexing records disagree about whether copies of hpvdb820.dll are 32-bit or AMD64. That conflict means you should not use a file listing as a replacement specification.
The HP repair procedure places the relevant copy in:
Rank #3
- UPC: 198828789662
- Weight: 10.450 lbs
%windir%System32spooldriversx643
That path is used by 64-bit Windows printer drivers. It does not mean that every copy found online is suitable for that directory.
To check your system:
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Read System type.
- In Printers & scanners, remove the existing printer and driver package.
- Install the driver package intended for that Windows architecture.
Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit printer-driver directory, or a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit driver location. A 32-bit application does not automatically determine where a printer plugin belongs because the Print Spooler loads printer drivers according to the printer package layout.
Fix 4: Use the historical 64-bit DeskJet workaround only when it fits
HP support documentation contains a historical procedure for older 64-bit Windows systems. It addresses DeskJet 820 and 822 compatibility and places hpvdb820.dll in the 64-bit printer-driver directory.
Recommended Free Tools
The documented command pattern is:
net stop spooler
copy hpvdb820.dll %windir%System32spooldriversx643
net start spooler
Treat this as a Windows 7- or Vista-era workaround, not as a generally supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 repair.
Use it only when all of the following are true:
- The printer is an affected DeskJet 820 or 822 model.
- You have the file from a trusted, matching HP driver package or the historical HP patch.
- You have confirmed that the package matches your Windows architecture.
- You have saved the existing driver file before replacing anything.
- You understand that newer Windows releases may reject the old driver even after the file is present.
To preserve the existing file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter this path in the address bar:
%windir%System32spooldriversx643
- If an existing
hpvdb820.dllis present, copy it to a separate backup folder. - Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Stop the Spooler.
- Copy the trusted file into the directory.
- Start the Spooler again.
- Restart Windows and print a test page.
Do not use a random DLL download as the source. The historical procedure is useful only when the file belongs to the correct HP package. Reports in the same HP support discussion indicate that the workaround did not continue to work reliably on newer Windows versions.
If the error returns after every reinstall or replacement, stop replacing the DLL. The underlying issue is probably that the old printer is no longer compatible with the installed Windows release.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine printer components, but there is no verified evidence that hpvdb820.dll is generally malware or that a particular security product has a known false-positive problem with it.

- Look for an entry involving the HP printer driver.
- Record the detected path and action.
- Confirm that the file came from an HP driver package and has a valid publisher signature.
- If there is any doubt, remove and reinstall the complete driver instead of restoring the isolated DLL.
If a third-party antivirus program quarantined the file, use its quarantine and exclusion controls only after verifying the installer and publisher. A clean reinstall is safer than restoring an unknown file.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands if Windows itself is damaged, driver installation repeatedly fails, or other protected system files are also reporting errors. They are not guaranteed to restore an HP third-party printer DLL.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
Run SFC
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward, then reinstall the HP printer driver and test the printer.
SFC checks protected Windows system files. A message saying that no integrity violations were found does not prove that hpvdb820.dll is present, correct, or compatible because this file belongs to the HP printer package.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing whether Windows or the printer package is changing can make troubleshooting unnecessarily slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what needs attention; its repair requires the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the exact HP DeskJet driver.

Windows may have a usable class driver even when HP no longer supplies a complete package.
Check for Windows updates
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect the printer and test it.
Inspect Device Manager
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a yellow warning icon or an unknown device.
- Right-click the affected entry and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Use Update driver only with a driver obtained from Windows or HP.
- If the entry is clearly stale, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and reinstall the printer.
Device Manager may show the hardware connection but does not guarantee that the printer’s complete Unidrv plugin is correct. If Windows detects the USB device but printing still fails, the driver package, queue, adapter, or unsupported hardware may be the real problem.

Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 hpvdb820.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM components. A printer-driver plugin is not automatically a self-registering COM DLL.
Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a registry-registration tool, not as a general missing-DLL repair command. Registering this file is therefore unlikely to repair the printer and may produce another error.

HP’s current driver pages may not list a package for an old DeskJet 820 or 822 on Windows 10 or Windows 11. If your operating system is not listed for the product, do not assume that a Vista- or Windows 7-era driver will work on a newer release.
At that point, practical choices include:
- Testing a compatible Windows printer class driver.
- Using the printer with an older supported Windows environment.
- Replacing the USB-to-parallel adapter if the connection is unreliable.
- Replacing the printer with hardware that has a current driver.
System Restore is reasonable only if the problem began immediately after a recent driver or Windows change and a suitable restore point exists. A full Windows reinstall is a last resort and will not guarantee support for the old printer.
Frequently asked questions
Is hpvdb820.dll a Windows system DLL?
No reliable evidence shows that it is part of the core Windows installation. It is an HP DeskJet printer-driver plugin commonly associated with the printer-driver spool directory.
Which printers use hpvdb820.dll?
HP support material specifically associates it with DeskJet 820 and 822 printers. Other DeskJet models discussed in the same historical patch use different DLLs.
Can I download the DLL by itself?
You should not. A standalone file may have the wrong architecture, version, publisher, or contents. Obtain the complete driver from HP or use Windows’ built-in driver system.
Why does the file exist but still fail?
The file may be in the wrong driver directory, belong to the wrong architecture, have damaged dependencies, or be paired with an incompatible INF and printer package. A present DLL is not proof of a working driver.
Will SFC restore it?
Not usually. SFC repairs protected Windows files. It can help when Windows is damaged, but reinstalling the HP printer package is the appropriate repair for a missing HP driver component.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Use the directory supplied by the matching printer-driver package. For the historical 64-bit HP procedure, the documented location is under the Print Spooler driver path, not a general application folder.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if the error appears after every reinstall?
Check whether HP supports the printer on your Windows release. Repeated failures usually indicate an unsupported legacy driver, stale printer configuration, or incompatible hardware rather than a DLL that needs to be copied again.
