The nokia.dll error usually comes from an older application, Nokia utility, or legacy game rather than Windows itself. Before replacing anything, note:

  • Which program shows the error: Check the title bar, shortcut, desktop icon, or the executable named in the message.
  • When it appears: Does it happen at startup, when opening a feature, after an update, or immediately after logging in?
  • The exact wording: “Missing,” “not found,” “could not be loaded,” “entry point not found,” and “not designed to run on Windows” point to different causes.
  • The file location: If nokia.dll exists, check whether it is beside the application executable, inside a Nokia utility folder, in a temporary folder, or in System32.
  • Windows architecture: Go to Settings > System > About and check System type for 64-bit or 32-bit Windows.
  • File properties: Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect the Details and Digital Signatures tabs.

Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website. A file with the right name can have the wrong architecture, exports, version, or malicious content. It may also hide the real problem, which is usually a damaged or incompatible parent application.

What nokia.dll actually is

nokia.dll is not a standard Windows component. It should not normally be copied into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

The filename is also ambiguous. File inventories for old Nokia PC Suite installations include a Nokia.dll inside the application directory, including a path resembling:

C:Program FilesNokiaNokia PC Suite 6Nokia.dll

That supports the possibility that your error belongs to an old Nokia utility. It does not prove that every file named nokia.dll comes from Nokia PC Suite.

Public DLL indexes also describe a separate file as a Win16 DLL and attribute it to “Dynamic Link Run Time Library,” Borland C++, and Borland International. Those Borland fields are repeated by third-party file databases, but they are not confirmed by an authoritative Borland, Microsoft, Nokia, or application installer manifest. Treat that attribution as unverified.

The practical conclusion is simple: identify the executable requesting the file before attempting a repair.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the program that reports the error

This is the fastest and safest fix when an old Nokia application or utility directly reports nokia.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify the parent application

If the error appears in a dialog, write down the complete message. Look for wording such as:

The program can't start because nokia.dll is missing from your computer.

Also check the application name in the dialog title.

If the message appears before the program opens:

  1. Right-click the program’s shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Read the Target field.
  5. Note the executable path.

If there is no shortcut:

  1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Reproduce the error if possible.
  3. Check the Processes or Details tab for the program name.
  4. Right-click the process and choose Open file location.

You can also check Event Viewer:

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter eventvwr.msc.
  3. Open Windows Logs > Application.
  4. Look for an error at the time the program failed.
  5. Record the Faulting application name and Faulting module name.

Use Windows’ repair option

Some desktop applications expose a built-in repair command:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find the affected application.
  4. Select the three-dot menu.
  5. Choose Advanced options if available.
  6. Select Repair.

Not every desktop application provides Repair or Reset. If the option is missing, do not substitute a downloaded DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstall from the original installer

If repair does not restore the file:

  1. Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Reinstall it using the original installer or the publisher’s official support channel.
  4. Install it to its normal application directory.
  5. Restart again.
  6. Launch the program from its original shortcut.

For old Nokia PC Suite software, use only an installer whose origin you can verify. Legacy software may no longer be supported, and an old installer may not function correctly on current 64-bit Windows.

A successful reinstall should place the application’s own DLLs beside its executable or in the application’s documented folders. It should not require manually placing nokia.dll in a Windows system directory.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Security software can remove or quarantine an old application component, particularly when the file is unsigned, obsolete, or bundled with legacy software. A quarantine event can leave the application installed but unable to start.

To check Microsoft Defender:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Expand recent detections.
  5. Check whether the affected application directory or nokia.dll is listed.

Only restore the file if all of the following are true:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • You identified the parent application.
  • The file came from that application’s original installation.
  • The file is in the expected application directory.
  • A current security scan does not flag it as malicious.

Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined threat can expose the device again. If you are unsure, do not restore it. Reinstall the complete application from its verified installer instead.

After reinstalling, run a scan:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Scan options.
  4. Choose Full scan.
  5. Select Scan now.

Do not disable antivirus protection merely to copy an unknown DLL into the application folder.

Fix 3: Check for a 16-bit compatibility problem

A reported nokia.dll sample is identified by public file databases as a Win16 DLL. That identification is not independently confirmed for every file with this name, but it is important because 16-bit compatibility has a hard limit.

Microsoft states that 64-bit versions of Windows do not support 16-bit applications, processes, or components. A 16-bit DLL cannot run directly inside a normal 64-bit Windows application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is likely the problem when:

  • The application is very old.
  • The failure began after moving from 32-bit to 64-bit Windows.
  • The error says the application is not designed to run on Windows.
  • Reinstalling the original program changes nothing.
  • The program worked on an older computer but fails on Windows 11.

Check the application architecture:

  1. Right-click the program executable.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Details tab if available.
  4. Look for vendor or product information.
  5. Check the application’s documentation or installer notes for 16-bit, 32-bit, or 64-bit support.

Compatibility mode cannot make 16-bit code run natively on 64-bit Windows. You may instead need:

  • A newer version of the application.
  • A supported 32-bit Windows installation.
  • An appropriately isolated virtual machine running a compatible legacy system.

Do not use a random 32-bit DLL as a substitute for a 16-bit component. A 32-bit DLL and a 16-bit DLL are different binary formats.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit DLL compatibility

If the file is an ordinary 32-bit or 64-bit DLL rather than a Win16 component, the calling program and DLL still need matching architecture.

  • A 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL.
  • A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL.
  • On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system components.
  • SysWOW64 normally contains redirected 32-bit system components.

That naming is confusing, but it does not mean third-party application files belong in either folder. Application DLLs normally stay beside the application executable unless the vendor documents another location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the file’s location and properties:

  1. Right-click nokia.dll.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open Details.
  4. Check for product, publisher, version, and language information.
  5. Open Digital Signatures, if present.
  6. Compare the location with the parent application’s installation directory.

A file in a temporary directory, a download folder, or a system folder deserves extra caution. The filename alone cannot prove that it is safe or belongs to your application.

Fix 5: Install the application’s complete dependencies

“Could not be loaded” does not always mean that nokia.dll itself is absent. The DLL may exist while another dependency is missing, incompatible, or damaged.

This is especially likely when:

  • The file is visibly present beside the executable.
  • The message says “specified module could not be found.”
  • The error changed after copying a replacement DLL.
  • The program worked until a Windows upgrade or cleanup operation.
  • Several DLL names appear in the error or Event Viewer.

The correct response is to reinstall the complete parent application, not to copy individual dependencies from the internet. Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET solely because the filename ends in .dll; there is no verified evidence connecting this particular nokia.dll to those runtimes.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components only if other Windows files are failing

Because nokia.dll is not identified as a Windows file, System File Checker is not normally the primary fix. It can help if the error is part of broader Windows corruption, but it will not usually restore a third-party application DLL.

Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator:

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to finish, then run:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows after both commands complete.

Possible results include:

  • No integrity violations: Windows system files appear intact. Return to repairing the parent application.
  • Corrupt files were repaired: Restart and test the application again.
  • Some files could not be repaired: Run DISM again after checking Windows Update, then repeat SFC. If the issue continues, investigate Windows recovery options.

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed; its free scan shows reported problems, while repair requires the full version. It is not required, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when nokia.dll belongs to that program.

Do not assume that a clean SFC result validates a downloaded nokia.dll. SFC checks protected Windows components, not arbitrary third-party application files.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall related drivers only when the failure involves hardware

A Nokia phone utility may interact with USB, Bluetooth, modem, or device drivers. A driver problem can prevent the application from working, but it does not make a random copy of nokia.dll safe or correct.

Check Device Manager:

  1. Press Win + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories such as Universal Serial Bus controllers, Bluetooth, Ports (COM & LPT), or Network adapters.
  4. Look for a warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected device.
  6. Select Update driver.
  7. Choose Search automatically for drivers.

If the device is no longer used, you can select Uninstall device, restart Windows, and reconnect it. For a legacy Nokia utility, obtain the driver from the hardware or application publisher’s official support channel.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of hunting through many driver versions; its free scan identifies reported driver issues, while driver installation requires the full version. It is optional, and it will not replace the parent application’s own nokia.dll.

Fix 8: Use System Restore if the failure started after a system change

System Restore can help when the error began immediately after an application installation, Windows update, driver change, or cleanup operation.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Select OK.
  2. Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
  3. Select Next.
  4. Review the affected programs.
  5. Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove recently installed applications or drivers. If the problem followed an interrupted application update, reinstalling the application may still be necessary.

Do not register or copy `nokia.dll blindly

regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair tool. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.

Only use it if the application’s official documentation specifically says that this DLL must be registered. The conditional command is:

regsvr32 "C:fullpathtonokia.dll"

A message stating that DllRegisterServer was not found does not prove that the file is missing or corrupt. It usually means the DLL is not a self-registering COM component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not:

  • Copy nokia.dll into both System32 and SysWOW64.
  • Replace it with a file from a generic DLL archive.
  • Use a registry cleaner.
  • Run regsvr32 repeatedly.
  • Install unrelated runtimes just because the file extension is .dll.

When the error says “entry point not found”

This usually indicates a version mismatch rather than a missing file. The program found a DLL with the expected filename but requested a function that the loaded file does not provide.

Common causes include:

  • A DLL from another application was copied into the folder.
  • An incomplete update left mixed application files.
  • The application is loading a file from an unexpected directory.
  • A 32-bit and 64-bit component were mixed.
  • The file belongs to a different release of the program.

Remove untrusted replacements and reinstall the complete application. Do not try to solve an entry-point error by downloading another file with the same name.

Final escalation checklist

If nokia.dll still fails after reinstalling the parent application, record:

  • The exact error message.
  • The executable path that requested the file.
  • The full path of every nokia.dll found on the computer.
  • The file’s Properties information and digital signature status.
  • Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Whether the application is 16-bit, 32-bit, or 64-bit.
  • What changed before the error appeared.
  • The application version shown by its installer or Properties dialog.
  • Any relevant Event Viewer entry.

At that point, contact the application publisher or move the software to a supported legacy environment. The filename alone is not enough to identify a correct replacement.

FAQ

Is nokia.dll a Windows system file?

No. It is not a standard Windows DLL and should not normally be installed in System32 or SysWOW64.

Does nokia.dll definitely belong to Borland C++?

No. Some public DLL databases make that attribution, but the product and publisher details are not confirmed by an authoritative package manifest. Treat the Borland description as unverified.

Is nokia.dll part of Nokia PC Suite?

A Nokia.dll appears in file inventories for old Nokia PC Suite installations. That is useful evidence, but it does not establish that every nokia.dll error comes from PC Suite.

Should I download nokia.dll from a DLL website?

No. The file may be malicious, incompatible, incomplete, or unrelated to the program requesting it. Repair or reinstall the parent application from its original installer instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the error say a module could not be found when the file is present?

A dependency of nokia.dll may be missing, or the file may have the wrong architecture or exports. Reinstall the complete application rather than copying individual dependencies.

Can compatibility mode fix a 16-bit nokia.dll?

No. Compatibility mode does not make 16-bit code run natively on 64-bit Windows. Use a newer build, supported 32-bit Windows, or an isolated compatible legacy environment.

Will SFC or DISM restore nokia.dll?

Usually not. These commands repair protected Windows components. They are useful when Windows itself is damaged, but a third-party application DLL normally requires application repair or reinstallation.

Should I run regsvr32 nokia.dll?

Only if the application’s official documentation requires registration. Most runtime DLLs do not need it, and a missing DllRegisterServer entry point is not evidence that the file is broken.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
