The filename alone cannot identify the exact WS_FTP release that installed a particular copy. Older and newer product generations can use different supporting files, licensing systems, folders, or dependencies.
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows through Windows-on-Windows 64-bit compatibility. It still needs its own 32-bit DLL in the correct application directory. What the error means
You may see messages such as:
- “This application failed to start because ftppro32.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because ftppro32.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The file ftppro32.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading ftppro32.dll.”
- “Failed to load ftppro32.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located.”
- “ftppro32.dll is not designed to run on Windows.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing.
A missing-file message usually means the application cannot find the DLL where it expects it. A “specified module could not be found” message can also mean that ftppro32.dll exists but one of its dependencies is missing. An entry-point error commonly indicates an incompatible or mismatched version. A “not designed to run on Windows” message can indicate corruption, an architecture mismatch, or an application that is too old for the current operating system.
The safest response is to restore the entire application installation, not just the named file.
First identify the program requesting the DLL
Before changing Windows files, confirm which program is generating the error.
Check the error window
Look at the title bar and surrounding text. The program name may appear even when the message only mentions ftppro32.dll. If the error appears immediately after launching WS_FTP, the connection is straightforward.

Check the shortcut
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
If the target points to an old WS_FTP folder, that is the application to repair. Do not assume that every copy of the DLL belongs to the same product.
Check Task Manager
If the program opens briefly before failing:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select Processes or Details.
- Look for the program that starts when the error appears.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location, if available.
Record the executable name and folder. This information is useful if reinstalling does not resolve the problem.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall WS_FTP
This is the most likely solution.
Use the original installer if you still have it. Otherwise obtain the appropriate WS_FTP Professional package through a legitimate Progress or Ipswitch product account, purchase channel, or supported installation source. Do not substitute an unrelated version merely because its name also contains WS_FTP.
Try the Windows repair option
- Close WS_FTP and any related transfer windows.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Search for WS_FTP or Ipswitch.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
- Choose Advanced options, Modify, or Repair, depending on what Windows displays.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch WS_FTP again.
On older Windows versions:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the WS_FTP entry.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall.
- Follow the product’s setup wizard.
If there is no repair option, reinstall the program. Back up any saved site definitions or connection settings first. Older WS_FTP uninstall procedures may remove configured sites and other application data.

- Download or locate the legitimate WS_FTP installer for the required product generation.
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Accept the license terms.
- Keep the default destination unless the original application used a known custom folder.
- Complete activation if the installer requests a license.
- Restart Windows.
- Start WS_FTP from its newly installed shortcut.

An older release may use an Ipswitch-branded folder instead. The exact location is less important than allowing the installer to place all matching files together.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if WS_FTP opens without the DLL message and can reach its normal login or connection screen. If the same message returns, verify that the shortcut is launching the newly installed executable rather than an old copy elsewhere.
Right-click the working shortcut, choose Properties, and compare its target with the folder that was repaired.

Security software may quarantine an application DLL after detecting suspicious behavior, a changed file, or an installer it does not trust. A missing file can therefore be the result of deletion rather than an incomplete installation.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
ftppro32.dllor the WS_FTP installation folder. - Read the detection name, path, and action.
- Do not restore the file solely because the filename matches.
- Restore it only when the file is clearly from the legitimate WS_FTP installation and the installer or application provenance is trustworthy.
- If restoration is permitted, follow the security product’s prompts.
- Run a new scan.
- Launch WS_FTP.
Do not disable antivirus protection just to force an unknown DLL into a program folder. If the file was quarantined because of a genuine detection, reinstall the application from its legitimate installer and contact the software vendor if the detection returns.
A clean reinstall is usually preferable to restoring an isolated file because it replaces the application’s complete set of files and dependencies.
Fix 3: Confirm the application folder and permissions
A damaged folder, moved installation, or permission problem can prevent a valid DLL from loading.

- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Look for
ftppro32.dllbeside the application executable or in a related WS_FTP subfolder. - If the file is absent, run the WS_FTP repair or reinstall.
- If the file is present, right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for a security Unblock option.
- If the file came from a trusted installer and Windows shows Unblock, select it and click Apply.
- Start the program again.
If access is denied, do not change ownership of Windows system folders. Instead, run the official installer as administrator and let it correct the application installation.
The expected location is the application directory. Copying this DLL to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is not a general repair and can create conflicts between product versions.

Fix 4: Handle 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility correctly
ftppro32.dll is associated with a 32-bit application. On 64-bit Windows, that is normal. A 32-bit program generally uses its own 32-bit DLL from its installation folder.
Do not try to fix the error by:
- Copying the DLL between
System32andSysWOW64 - Using a 64-bit replacement
- Renaming a similarly named DLL
- Mixing files from different WS_FTP releases
- Installing a random copy from an archive
If the program is very old, compatibility may be the real problem. Historical WS_FTP documentation covers Windows versions from an earlier era, while current Progress documentation covers newer releases. Restoring the old DLL may not make the complete legacy application reliable on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
If reinstalling the correct product still produces load errors:
- Right-click the WS_FTP executable or shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an appropriate older Windows version only if the vendor’s documentation recommends it.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the application requires it.
- Click Apply, then OK.
- Test the application.
If the application remains unusable, use a supported WS_FTP release or run the legacy program in an appropriately isolated environment. Avoid using an obsolete FTP client for sensitive transfers unless its security and protocol support meet your requirements.
Fix 5: Install pending Windows updates
Windows updates will not normally provide ftppro32.dll, but updates can resolve broader compatibility problems involving old applications.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when requested.
- Test WS_FTP again.
Do not expect Windows Update to replace a third-party application DLL. If the error names only ftppro32.dll, repairing the owning program remains the primary fix.
Fix 6: Update related drivers only when evidence points there
A display, storage, network, or security driver is not the normal cause of a missing application DLL. Consider driver repair only if WS_FTP fails alongside wider networking, storage, or device errors.
For a manual driver update:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test the application again.
For a clean reinstall, right-click the device, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and then install the correct driver from the computer or device manufacturer. Do not uninstall a critical device without knowing how its driver will be restored.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test WS_FTP.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. The official Microsoft guidance for these commands is available on the System File Checker support page.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test WS_FTP again. If it reports no integrity violations, that does not prove the application DLL is healthy; it only means protected Windows files were not the identified problem.

Does regsvr32 fix ftppro32.dll
Usually, no.
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly ActiveX or COM components. It does not download a missing file, repair a damaged installation, restore dependencies, or make an ordinary application DLL load.

regsvr32 ftppro32.dll
If Windows responds that the entry point is missing, that is evidence the DLL is not meant to be registered this way. Even if registration succeeds, it would not repair a missing or mismatched WS_FTP installation. Use the application’s installer instead.
What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
Standalone DLL download sites can provide malware, an incorrect build, a mismatched architecture, or a file that is unrelated to your installed WS_FTP release. A replacement may also leave missing dependencies, licensing files, permissions, and configuration problems untouched.
Use the original installer or a legitimate Progress/Ipswitch WS_FTP package. There is no verified current vendor download that provides ftppro32.dll as an independent component.
Do not place it in Windows system folders
This file is not a standard Windows DLL. Placing copies in both System32 and SysWOW64 can cause the wrong version to load and makes later troubleshooting harder.

Files such as ftppro2k.dll or another ftppro32.dll from a different product generation are not interchangeable merely because their names look similar.
Do not run repeated repairs without checking the application path
If an old shortcut points to a deleted installation, reinstalling a newer copy may appear ineffective. Check the executable path and remove or update stale shortcuts.

If reinstalling still fails
Collect these details before trying more changes:
- The complete error text
- The title of the error window
- The executable name and full path
- The installed WS_FTP version, if shown
- The location of any existing
ftppro32.dll - Antivirus quarantine history
- Your Windows version and system architecture
- Whether the error began after an update, cleanup, restore, or migration
If the error says the specified module cannot be found even though ftppro32.dll exists, the application may have a missing dependency. Reinstall the whole program first. Further dependency analysis should use the vendor’s support process rather than copying unrelated runtime files from the internet.
