network.dll Not Found: Identify the App and Restore It Safely

Length13 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

network.dll is not one standard Windows file, so the safest fix is to identify the program requesting it and repair that program. Do not download a replacement DLL blindly, because unrelated applications can use the same filename with different versions and architectures.

What this file actually does

The name network.dll describes a filename, not a unique Windows component. Public file information reports one copy as VNetwork Module, while another listing describes a copy as a libcurl Shared Library. These descriptions conflict, and neither proves that every network.dll belongs to the same publisher or product.

A reported copy is 32-bit, version 7.28.1.0, and approximately 0.18 MB. Treat those details as identification clues, not as a universal replacement specification. A different application may require a different build, including a 64-bit copy.

There is no reliable evidence that this generic network.dll is a standard file installed by Windows in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. In most cases, treat it as an application-owned file unless the actual file is digitally signed by Microsoft and located in a verified Windows component directory.

Windows can load DLLs from several locations, including the application folder, Windows folders, and directories listed in PATH. This means several unrelated copies can legitimately exist, and the location loaded by an application matters. Microsoft documents this behavior in its DLL search order guidance.

Causes of network.dll errors

What you notice Most likely cause Best first action
One game or application fails immediately Incomplete update, damaged installation, or removed file Repair or reinstall that application
The error began after antivirus activity The file was quarantined Check Windows Security Protection history
The file exists, but the message says “specified module could not be found” A dependency of network.dll is missing Repair the application and check its required runtimes
The application is old Incompatible build or legacy runtime dependency Install the vendor’s supported version and required runtime
Several programs fail Windows corruption, malware, or a broader system problem Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC
The file is in %TEMP% or a random profile folder Stale startup item or suspicious loading path Inspect the launching program and scan the PC
The error started after moving the program Broken shortcut or incomplete migration Recreate the shortcut or reinstall to the new location
Only one Windows user sees the problem Damaged per-user settings or startup entry Test the application in a new Windows account

First, identify the program that owns the file

Do this before copying or downloading anything. The error message usually identifies the executable, launcher, or shortcut that requested network.dll.

Check the error window

Read the complete message and note:

  • The name of the program that will not start
  • Whether the message says “missing,” “not found,” or “specified module could not be found”
  • The location shown in the title bar or details area
  • Whether the error appears during Windows startup or only when launching an application

If the message appears when you open a game, the game or its launcher is the first suspect. If it appears immediately after signing in, check startup applications and scheduled tasks rather than assuming Windows itself owns the file.

Check the shortcut target

  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Read the complete path in Target.
  5. Select Open File Location if that button is available.
  6. Note the folder containing the application executable.

The missing DLL normally belongs beside the executable or inside a subfolder installed by that program. A shortcut pointing to an old drive, backup folder, or removed installation can produce a misleading missing-file error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find existing copies

  1. Press Windows key + E.
  2. Select This PC.
  3. In the search box, enter network.dll.
  4. Wait for the search to finish.
  5. Right-click each result and choose Open file location.
  6. Record the full path of every copy.

Do not assume that the first result is correct. A copy in a game folder, a copy in an old application directory, and a copy in a Windows directory may serve entirely different programs.

Be especially cautious with a copy found in:

  • %TEMP%
  • A random folder under %AppData%
  • A user profile folder with no recognizable application
  • A startup or download directory
  • A newly created folder with an unfamiliar name

Multiple copies are not automatically evidence of malware, but an unexpected location deserves a signature check and a security scan.

Inspect the file properties

For an existing file:

  1. Right-click network.dll.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Details tab.
  4. Record File description, Type, Product name, and File version.
  5. Open the Digital Signatures tab if it exists.
  6. Select the signature and choose Details.
  7. Confirm whether Windows reports that the signature is valid.
  8. Note the signer and compare it with the application vendor.

You may see VNetwork Module, libcurl Shared Library, or another description. These labels can help identify the owner, but public metadata is not proof of provenance. A blank publisher does not automatically prove that the file is malicious, and a familiar description does not prove that the file is safe.

Fix 1: Repair the application that displays the error

This is the most likely solution when only one application fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair through Windows Settings

  1. Press Windows key + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the application that displays the network.dll error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

The Repair option normally keeps the application’s data while replacing damaged program components. If Repair is unavailable or does not work, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or local data.

Some traditional desktop programs do not show these options. Use Control Panel instead:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the affected program.
  5. Choose Repair or Change.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.
  7. Restart Windows and test the application.

If the program has its own maintenance utility, select Repair, Modify, or Restore rather than manually inserting a DLL.

Reinstall from the official installer

If repair does not restore the file:

  1. Back up saved games, profiles, or project files if the application stores them locally.
  2. Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Download the installer from the application vendor or use the original official launcher.
  5. Install the program to its normal location.
  6. Start it again and check whether the error has disappeared.

Do not uninstall first if you cannot recover important local data. Check the application’s documentation for save-file and configuration locations.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A successful reinstall should place the required DLL in the application’s own folder or another location chosen by its installer. It should not require you to copy network.dll into System32.

Repair a game through its launcher

For a game, open the launcher and look for a command named Verify, Verify integrity, Scan and repair, or Repair files. The exact menu differs by launcher.

After verification:

  1. Allow the launcher to replace missing or damaged files.
  2. Restart the launcher.
  3. Start the game again.
  4. If verification cannot restore the file, uninstall and reinstall the game through the same official launcher.

This is safer than downloading a DLL because the launcher can obtain the build intended for that exact game version and architecture.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can remove a file after an update, especially if the application folder changed or the file was modified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an entry involving network.dll or the affected application.
  5. Expand the entry and read the detected location and threat information.

Restore the file only when all of these conditions are true:

  • You recognize the application.
  • The file path matches the application’s real installation folder.
  • The application came from an official source.
  • The vendor confirms that the detection is a false positive, or the file can be safely restored from the application’s installer.
  • A current security scan does not report other suspicious files.

Do not disable Windows Security merely to force a DLL into place. If the file was quarantined, reinstalling the application from its official source is usually safer than restoring the old copy.

Run a scan after reinstalling:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Scan options.
  4. Select Full scan.
  5. Select Scan now.

If the file was located in %TEMP%, an unfamiliar startup directory, or a random profile folder, do not restore it solely because the filename matches.

Fix 3: Check architecture and application compatibility

A 32-bit application generally needs its 32-bit dependencies, while a 64-bit application normally needs 64-bit dependencies. Windows may contain both 32-bit and 64-bit software, and the same filename can exist in both environments.

To check the application architecture:

  1. Open the application’s installation folder.
  2. Right-click its main executable.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Open Details and record the product information.
  5. Check the vendor’s documentation or installer for whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.

For an existing network.dll, open Properties > Details and record the file version and description. Do not replace a required 64-bit file with a reported 32-bit network.dll simply because the filename matches.

The correct fix for an architecture mismatch is to install the correct build of the application. Do not move DLLs between System32, SysWOW64, and application directories. Despite its name, SysWOW64 is associated with 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows, and manually mixing files can create additional conflicts.

Fix 4: Repair a missing dependency

The message “specified module could not be found” does not always mean that network.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found network.dll but failed to load a library that it requires.

Signs of a dependency problem include:

  • network.dll is visibly present beside the application executable.
  • Replacing the file changes nothing.
  • The error began after removing an old runtime.
  • The program is several years old.
  • Other DLL errors appear after the first one.

Repair or reinstall the owning application first. If its documentation specifically names a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package, install the supported package from Microsoft’s latest Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET at random and assume one of them will fix every network.dll error. These are separate components, and the correct dependency depends on the application.

For an older program, also check:

  1. Right-click the application executable.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for only if the vendor recommends it.
  5. Select Apply, then OK.
  6. Test the application.

Compatibility mode does not replace a missing DLL, but it can help an old program launch after its files and required runtimes are correctly installed.

Fix 5: Install Windows updates and repair Windows components

Use this step when several Windows features or Microsoft applications are failing, not merely because one third-party program reports network.dll.

Install pending updates

  1. Press Windows key + I.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Check for updates again until no further important updates are offered.

Run DISM, then SFC

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.

Microsoft provides these commands in its System File Checker repair guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They will not normally reconstruct a third-party DLL inside a game or application folder. If the affected program alone still fails afterward, return to the application repair or reinstall steps.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without identifying what changed usually adds little. Outbyte PC Repair can show what problems its free scan detects, while repair actions are performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that program owns network.dll.

Use Windows 11 repair reinstall if necessary

On supported Windows 11 installations:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now.
  6. Follow the prompts.

This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where the option is available. Microsoft describes the process in its Windows repair reinstall guidance.

Fix 6: Update or reinstall a related driver

A network driver is not the same thing as network.dll, and Device Manager will not normally restore an application DLL. Driver work is worthwhile only when the error began with network hardware failures, a system migration, or a vendor update.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Network adapters.
  4. Right-click the affected adapter.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Record the provider, date, and version.
  8. Select Update Driver.
  9. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  10. Restart Windows.

If the problem began immediately after a driver update:

  1. Return to the adapter’s Driver tab.
  2. Select Roll Back Driver if available.
  3. Confirm the rollback.
  4. Restart Windows.

For a clean reinstall, download the driver from the computer or network-adapter manufacturer, disconnect from the internet if the vendor instructs you to, and use Uninstall device only when you have a replacement driver ready. Avoid deleting the driver package unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically require it.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of checking which of many drivers is stale; its free scan identifies the reported issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is not required for a network.dll repair, and the owning application still needs to be repaired if that is where the file belongs.

Fix 7: Check startup entries, malware, and unexpected paths

If the error appears before you open any program, identify what starts it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Disable only entries you recognize as belonging to the affected program.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Check whether the error returns.

Also inspect Task Scheduler:

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Task Scheduler.
  3. Open Task Scheduler.
  4. Review Task Scheduler Library.
  5. Look for tasks pointing to a removed application, %TEMP%, or an unfamiliar profile directory.
  6. Do not delete a task unless you have identified its owner.

A DLL loaded from an unexpected directory can indicate a stale shortcut, unwanted software, or DLL search-path abuse. Microsoft documents the security risk in its DLL security guidance.

Run a full Windows Security scan, remove software you do not recognize through Settings > Apps, and reinstall trusted applications from their official installers. Never copy a questionable DLL into a Windows system directory.

Do not register network.dll unless the vendor says to

Do not run this command as a general repair:

regsvr32 network.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM or ActiveX components. A normal networking or helper library is not fixed by registering it. Microsoft explains the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.

Use registration only when the application vendor explicitly identifies this exact DLL as a COM or ActiveX server and provides the correct command and file path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why downloading network.dll is unsafe

Random DLL download pages cannot reliably determine:

  • Which application requested the file
  • Whether the file is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Which build the application expects
  • Whether the file’s dependencies are also missing
  • Whether the downloaded file has been modified
  • Whether the file is digitally signed by the correct vendor

A downloaded DLL may make the error change while leaving the underlying installation damaged. It can also create version conflicts, introduce malware, or cause Windows to load an unintended copy.

The safe sources are:

  • The affected application’s official installer
  • The game’s official launcher and repair function
  • The application vendor’s support or download page
  • Microsoft for Windows components and Microsoft runtimes

Do not copy network.dll into System32, SysWOW64, or another application folder unless the application’s official installer specifically directs you to do so.

If the problem affects one application and one user, prioritize that application’s files and profile. If it affects every user and several programs, investigate Windows corruption or malware.

System Restore can help when the failure began after a known software or system change and a restore point exists:

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Create a restore point.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
  6. Review the affected programs.
  7. Confirm the restore.

System Restore rolls back system settings and installed software changes, not personal files. Microsoft lists this and other recovery methods in its Windows recovery options.

FAQ

Is network.dll a Windows system file?

Not necessarily. The filename is reused by unrelated third-party applications, and there is no reliable evidence that this generic file is a standard Windows component. Identify the path and owning executable before treating it as a Windows problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is VNetwork Module the definite owner?

No. VNetwork Module is reported as a file description for some copies, but the filename is also associated publicly with other descriptions. Use the file path, application, signature, and installer to establish ownership.

Can I download the reported 32-bit version?

No. A reported version and size do not prove that the file is correct for your application. Reinstall the owning program so its installer supplies the appropriate build.

Why does the message say a module is missing when network.dll exists?

The application may be missing a dependency required by network.dll. Repair the owning application and install only runtimes explicitly required by its vendor.

Will SFC restore network.dll?

Usually not if the file belongs to a game or third-party application. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while the application’s installer restores application files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I run regsvr32 network.dll?

Usually no. Run it only when the application vendor explicitly documents this DLL as a registerable COM or ActiveX component.

What is the safest fix?

Identify the executable and file path, then repair or reinstall that application from its official source. For games, use the launcher’s Verify or Repair function first.
