rar.dll is not a Windows system file, so copying it into System32 is usually the wrong fix. Identify the program requesting rar.dll, then repair or reinstall that exact program from its legitimate vendor.
What this file actually does
rar.dll is a private application DLL used by archive software and programs that bundle archive components. The filename is not unique to one current Windows component.
One documented Rar.dll is identified as ALZip Rar Dynamic Link Library, made by ESTsoft and commonly found in an ALZip Formats directory. Older or third-party 7-Zip-derived software has also used a file named rar.dll, sometimes described as a RAR plugin for 7-Zip. That historical attribution does not prove that every current 7-Zip installation contains a file with this name.
Current 7-Zip can unpack RAR archives and provides separate Windows installers for x64, x86, and ARM64 systems, but rar.dll is not a verified Windows component and is not established as a standard file in every current 7-Zip installation.

The practical consequence is important: an ALZip rar.dll is not interchangeable with a module bundled by a 7-Zip-derived application. The correct file depends on:
- The executable that reported the error
- The full path shown in the message
- The application and release family
- Whether the caller is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether antivirus software quarantined the original file
Causes and symptoms
| What you see | Most likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
Cannot find ...ALZipFormatsRar.dll |
ALZip was damaged, updated incorrectly, or partially removed | Repair or reinstall ALZip |
An old launcher or utility reports Failed to load Rar.dll |
A bundled archive plugin is missing or incompatible | Repair that launcher or application |
| The error appeared after antivirus activity | The DLL may have been quarantined | Check Windows Security Protection history |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” | Corruption, wrong architecture, or mismatched DLL | Remove the substitute and reinstall the owning application |
| The error began after copying a DLL from elsewhere | Wrong vendor or bitness | Delete the substitute and restore the application |
| Several unrelated Windows programs fail | Possible broader Windows or storage corruption | Update Windows, then use DISM and SFC if appropriate |
Exact wording varies. You may see messages such as:
Rar.dll could not be foundFailed to load Rar.dllThe application has failed to start because Rar.dll was not foundThe file Rar.dll is missing or corruptCannot find C:Program Files (x86)ESTsoftALZipFormatsRar.dll
Before changing anything, identify the owner
Do not start by downloading a replacement DLL. First establish which program called it.
1. Record the complete error
Write down or screenshot:
- The exact error text
- The full path, if shown
- The application name
- The executable name
- Whether the program is a game, launcher, archive utility, installer, or business application
A path containing ESTsoftALZipFormatsRar.dll points toward ALZip. A path beside a launcher or utility based on older 7-Zip components may indicate a private bundled plugin.

Do not assume that a program capable of opening RAR files owns the missing DLL. A game launcher, installer, deployment tool, or enterprise utility may carry its own archive plugin.
2. Check whether the file is present under a different condition
Open the folder named in the error and look for Rar.dll.
If the file exists, do not immediately replace it. The problem may instead be:
Recommended Free Tools
- A 32-bit application trying to load an incompatible 64-bit DLL
- A 64-bit application receiving a 32-bit DLL
- A damaged file
- A missing dependency required by the DLL
- A blocked or quarantined module
- A plugin from a different application
If the file is absent, continue with the repair steps below.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning application
This is the most likely solution.
For ALZip
If the path identifies ALZip, repair or reinstall ALZip rather than downloading rar.dll separately.
First close ALZip and any archive windows. Then:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find ALZip.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start ALZip and test the operation again.
If there is no Repair option, use the classic uninstall and reinstall route:

- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find ALZip.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download ALZip again from ESTsoft’s official product source.
- Install the same application normally.
- Test by opening the RAR archive or repeating the action that produced the error.
Some desktop applications provide their own maintenance wizard:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs → Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change.
- Select Repair, if offered.
- Restart the application.
Reinstalling the complete program restores the matching DLL, configuration, and supporting files together. It also avoids mixing a file from ALZip with a file intended for another program.
For a 7-Zip-derived launcher or utility
If the error comes from a game launcher, installer, enterprise tool, or other application that bundles archive functionality, repair that application first.
Look for a menu named Repair, Verify files, Scan and repair, or Modify. For a game launcher, use its built-in file verification function rather than copying a DLL into the launcher directory.
If no repair function exists:
- Close the application.
- Back up its settings or saved data if the vendor recommends doing so.
- Uninstall the application from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the application again from its publisher.
- Reinstall it to the intended location.
- Test the application before restoring any old DLL files.
If you specifically use current 7-Zip to open RAR files and 7-Zip itself is failing, reinstall the official 7-Zip package that matches your Windows architecture. Do not assume, however, that a current 7-Zip installer should contain a file literally named rar.dll.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine a legitimate application module. Check this before reinstalling repeatedly.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries.
- Expand any detection that names
Rar.dllor the affected application. - Confirm that the detected file belongs to the legitimate application you installed.
- If you are certain it is a false positive, use the available Restore or Allow action.
- Start the application again.
Only restore a file after verifying the application’s origin and the detection details. Restoring a genuine threat can put the computer at risk. If the source is uncertain, leave the file quarantined, run a scan, and reinstall the application from its official publisher instead.
If the file is repeatedly quarantined after a clean reinstall, do not keep restoring it. Run a full scan and investigate the detection. A tampered installer or compromised application directory needs attention before the DLL is restored.
Fix 3: Remove a wrong or manually copied DLL
If you previously downloaded or copied rar.dll, it may be the cause rather than the solution.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA DLL with the right filename can still be wrong because it may belong to:
- A different vendor
- A different application
- A different release family
- A 32-bit caller instead of a 64-bit caller
- A 64-bit caller instead of a 32-bit caller
Return to the folder named in the error and remove only the replacement you added. If you are unsure which file is original, do not delete application files at random. Uninstall and reinstall the owning program instead.

Never copy rar.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- The Windows root directory
- Another application’s installation folder
System32 is not a universal storage location for third-party DLLs. On 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64 is associated with 32-bit system components, which makes manual copying even more confusing.
Fix 4: Match the application architecture
Architecture mismatch can produce a load failure even when the file exists.
A 32-bit program generally needs its compatible 32-bit plugin. A 64-bit program generally needs a compatible 64-bit plugin. Windows being 64-bit does not mean every installed application is 64-bit.
To check the application architecture:
- Open the program’s installation folder.
- Right-click its main executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and note any product information.
- Check the publisher’s installer options for x86, x64, or ARM64 builds.
If the vendor supplies separate installers, install the version matching the application that reports the error. Do not substitute a DLL based only on its filename or reported size.
If a program says the DLL is “not designed to run on Windows,” reinstalling the correct application build is safer than trying regsvr32. That message commonly indicates corruption, incompatible bitness, or a mismatched build.
Fix 5: Check for a missing dependency
Sometimes Windows reports the visible DLL even though the real failure is a dependency required by that DLL.

This is more likely when:
Rar.dllis present- Reinstalling did not help
- The error says the module could not be loaded
- The application was moved from another computer
- Only one program fails
Do not install random runtime packages based on a generic DLL error. Check the application publisher’s system requirements and reinstall the application using its official installer. If the program includes a repair option, use it.
Also check whether the application works under another Windows user account:
- Create or use a separate local Windows account.
- Sign in to that account.
- Start the affected application.
- Repeat the operation.
If it works there, the binary may be intact and the original profile’s settings or permissions may be damaged. Reset the application’s profile using the vendor’s instructions rather than replacing Windows DLLs.
Fix 6: Install Windows updates
Windows Update will not normally restore a third-party rar.dll, but updating can resolve loader, security, or compatibility problems affecting the application.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when several Windows components are failing, Windows itself is unstable, or you have evidence of system corruption. They are not the normal way to restore an ALZip or 7-Zip-derived plugin.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC.
Restart Windows after both commands finish. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application. If it reports that it could not repair some files, run the commands again only if Microsoft’s guidance indicates that is appropriate, then focus back on repairing the application that owns rar.dll.
These tools repair protected Windows components. They should not be expected to recreate a private third-party archive plugin.
Running repeated scans without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slower. Outbyte PC Repair can show what it identifies during its free scan, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the application that owns rar.dll remains the definitive fix.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a known system change
System Restore is reasonable when the error began immediately after a software installation, driver update, cleanup operation, or other known change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Type
Create a restore point. - Open the matching result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Next.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore is designed to reverse software and system-setting changes without normally affecting personal files. It does not replace a proper application reinstall, and it cannot help if no suitable restore point exists.

A driver is not the normal owner of rar.dll. Do not reinstall graphics, storage, or chipset drivers solely because this archive DLL is missing.
Consider driver troubleshooting only when the error appeared with broader symptoms such as crashes, device failures, or application failures across unrelated programs.
To check drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the suspected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and driver date.
- Use Update Driver only when you have a legitimate driver source.
- Restart Windows and retest.
Avoid driver download sites and unknown driver bundles. Outbyte Driver Updater can identify outdated drivers in its free scan, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that requested rar.dll.
Why regsvr32 rar.dll usually does not help
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Archive codec and plugin DLLs are normally private modules loaded directly by their application, not COM components that need system registration.
Running:
regsvr32 rar.dll
may produce an error such as:
- The module was loaded but the entry point was not found
- The specified module could not be found
- The module failed to load
That does not prove that another copy should be downloaded. It usually means registration is not the repair method for this file.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically documents that its DLL is a COM server and provides the correct registration instructions.
Do not download rar.dll from random DLL sites
A standalone DLL download can contain malware, belong to a different product, use the wrong architecture, or be incompatible with the application’s private interface. Even a clean file often fails to fix the underlying damaged installation.

FAQ
Is rar.dll part of Windows?
No verified evidence indicates that rar.dll ships with Windows itself. It should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Does 7-Zip always install rar.dll?
No. Older or third-party 7-Zip-derived builds have used that filename, but current official 7-Zip documentation does not establish rar.dll as a standard file in every Windows installation.
Why does ALZip mention Rar.dll?
ALZip has been associated with an Rar.dll module in its application Formats directory. If that path appears in the error, repair or reinstall ALZip.
Can I use an ALZip DLL in 7-Zip?
No. Files with the same name are not automatically interchangeable. Vendor, architecture, build, and expected interface all matter.
Should I register the file with regsvr32?
Usually no. Archive plugins are normally loaded privately by their application and are not COM registration libraries.
Will SFC restore the missing file?
Normally no. SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components, not a third-party archive plugin.
What if I only want to open a RAR archive?
Install or repair a legitimate archive application that supports RAR files. You do not need to install a Windows runtime or copy a DLL into a system folder.
What is the safest first step?
Read the complete path and identify the calling application. Then use that application’s official repair or reinstall process.
