Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, answer these three questions:

Which program reports the error?
Look at the error dialog, the shortcut you opened, Task Manager, Startup apps, or Event Viewer.filecachemgr.dllis associated with MUSICMATCH JUKEBOX, not with Windows itself. -
When does it happen?
Note whether the message appears when Windows starts, when you launch MUSICMATCH, after an uninstall, after antivirus action, or after a Windows change. -
Is the calling program 32-bit or 64-bit?

The safest answer is usually to repair or reinstall the MUSICMATCH installation that originally supplied the file. Do not download a replacement DLL and copy it into System32 or SysWOW64.
What filecachemgr.dll is
filecachemgr.dll is an application component with the internal name FileCacheMgr. It is associated primarily with MUSICMATCH JUKEBOX, an older digital-music application developed by MUSICMATCH, Inc.
It is not a standard Windows component. It should normally be located in the MUSICMATCH installation directory, not in a global Windows folder. A historical installation path is:
C:Program FilesMUSICMATCHMUSICMATCH JukeboxFileCacheMgr.dll
The exact folder can differ by release, Windows architecture, or the original OEM package.
Windows normally searches an unpackaged program’s own directory early in the DLL search process. That is why placing a random copy in a system directory is usually ineffective and can create a security or compatibility problem.
Messages you may see
The wording varies, but common forms include:

| “This application failed to start because filecachemgr.dll was not found.” | The program cannot find the DLL in its expected application directory. |
| “The file filecachemgr.dll is missing or corrupted.” | The file may be absent, damaged, or incompatible with the program. |
| “A required component is missing: filecachemgr.dll.” | The application installation is incomplete or damaged. |
| “Error loading filecachemgr.dll. The specified module could not be found.” | The named DLL may be present, but one of its dependencies may be missing. |
| “The program can’t start because filecachemgr.dll is missing from your computer.” | Windows could not load the application’s required component. |
| “A required .DLL file, FILECACHEMGR.DLL, was not found.” | The program or a startup entry is calling the missing component. |
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that filecachemgr.dll itself is absent. Windows may locate the file and then fail because another DLL, runtime component, or compatible dependency cannot be loaded.
Fix 1: Identify the program and its path
Start by confirming whether MUSICMATCH is still installed.
Check Installed apps
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps & features.
- Search for MUSICMATCH, MUSICMATCH Jukebox, or a related OEM music application.
- If it appears, select its three-dot menu or entry and look for Advanced options, Modify, Repair, or Uninstall.
If the program is not listed, check its old installation folder:

You can also use File Explorer’s search box to search the computer for:
filecachemgr.dll
Do not assume that every result is trustworthy. Record the full path. A file inside a MUSICMATCH application folder is consistent with the known association. A copy in a temporary folder, download folder, or unrelated program directory deserves additional scrutiny.
Check the startup source
If the error appears immediately after signing in:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for MUSICMATCH or an entry with an unfamiliar name.
- Right-click the entry and choose Open file location if available.
- If the entry points to an old MUSICMATCH folder, note the path before disabling it.
You can disable the obsolete startup entry temporarily and restart. If the error disappears, the missing file is probably being requested by a leftover startup command rather than by Windows.

Check Event Viewer
For a more precise record:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Choose Filter Current Log from the Actions pane.
- Search for entries created at the time of the failure.
- Record the faulting application, faulting module, and any error code.
This information helps distinguish a missing application file from a dependency or architecture problem.

Fix 2: Repair MUSICMATCH if it is still installed
Repair is preferable to copying a DLL because it restores the program’s complete set of files and configuration.
Try the Windows repair option
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Find MUSICMATCH JUKEBOX.
- Select its menu or entry.
- Choose Advanced options, Modify, or Repair, if available.
- Complete the repair process.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch MUSICMATCH again.
Older programs may not expose a modern Windows repair button. If you see Change, Modify, or Repair in the traditional installer, use that option instead of removing the application.
A successful repair should let MUSICMATCH open without the filecachemgr.dll message. If the same message appears, continue with a clean reinstall.
Fix 3: Reinstall MUSICMATCH from trusted original media
If the installation is incomplete or damaged, reinstall the parent application rather than downloading filecachemgr.dll separately.

Use the original MUSICMATCH installer, an installation disc, or trusted OEM media that you already own. No current official MUSICMATCH redistributable page for this DLL has been verified, so do not treat a random download page as an official source.
Reinstall steps
- Back up any music library files or playlists that MUSICMATCH stores outside your normal music folders.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find MUSICMATCH JUKEBOX.
- Select the menu and choose Uninstall.
- If Windows does not list it, open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Select MUSICMATCH and choose Uninstall or Change.
- Restart Windows after removal.
- Run the trusted installer from your original media.
- If the installer offers a destination, use its normal application folder.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If the installer refuses to run:
- Right-click the installer and select Properties.
- On the Compatibility tab, try a compatible older Windows mode.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only for the installation.
- Apply the change and run the installer again.
Compatibility mode may help an old installer launch, but it does not guarantee that the entire application is supported on current Windows versions. If MUSICMATCH installs successfully but still cannot start, record the full error and continue to the dependency checks below.
Fix 4: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine an old application file. The filename alone cannot prove whether the file is safe or malicious.
Review Microsoft Defender history
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the error began.
- Open any entry associated with MUSICMATCH or
filecachemgr.dll. - Check the original path, detection details, and available file information.
Restore the file only when all of the following support its authenticity:
- The original path was the MUSICMATCH installation directory.
- The file came from your trusted original installation media.
- The publisher and file details are consistent with the application.
- Your security software does not continue to identify it as a threat.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined item can cause it to be detected again. Do not disable protection merely to force an unverified DLL into place. If the file is genuinely needed and the installation source is trusted, reinstalling the complete application is safer than restoring a loose copy.
Fix 5: Check for a missing dependency
A MUSICMATCH installation may contain filecachemgr.dll while another required component is missing. This is especially relevant when the message says:

Error loading filecachemgr.dll. The specified module could not be found.
Check these points:
- Confirm that
filecachemgr.dllexists in the MUSICMATCH application folder. - Confirm that the calling executable is also in that folder or in the expected MUSICMATCH directory.
- Check whether the application is a 32-bit program.
- Review the Application log in Event Viewer for a related error.
- Reinstall the complete application if any companion files are missing.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET redistributables merely because a DLL error appears. No file-specific evidence establishes that one of those runtimes is required here. Install or repair a runtime only if the application’s own installer or a specific Windows error identifies it.
32-bit and 64-bit considerations
A 32-bit MUSICMATCH program can run on 64-bit Windows through WOW64. Its application DLL should remain with the program, commonly under a path such as:
C:Program Files (x86)MUSICMATCH
Do not copy a 32-bit application DLL into either of these folders:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Despite the names, those folders have architecture-specific roles. They are not general-purpose storage locations for third-party application files.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when other Windows problems exist
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They are not expected to recreate an application-owned MUSICMATCH DLL.
Use them when you also see damaged Windows features, repeated system errors, failed updates, or several unrelated system files reporting corruption.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run SFC
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward and test the application.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, check whether other Windows symptoms have improved. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the process only after DISM has completed successfully, then review the result rather than repeatedly copying DLLs.

Fix 7: Check drivers only if the calling program identifies a device problem
A driver update is not a normal fix for an application-owned MUSICMATCH DLL. Use Device Manager only if the error occurs alongside a sound-device failure, an unknown device, or a device-related message.

- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Select Driver to view the provider and driver details.
- Use Update Driver only when a current driver is available from the computer or device manufacturer.
Do not use Device Manager to search randomly for a filecachemgr.dll replacement. Drivers and application DLLs are different components.
If several devices have stale or conflicting drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; its driver installation features require the full version. Updating a driver will not replace the MUSICMATCH DLL, so reinstall MUSICMATCH if that remains the direct error.
Fix 8: Use Windows Features only when Windows names a feature
Windows Features does not contain a standard feature named filecachemgr.dll or MUSICMATCH.

To check whether Windows itself is asking for an optional component:

- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the listed Windows features.
- Do not enable a feature just because its name seems related to an old application.
- Select Cancel unless the error specifically identifies a missing Windows feature.
Enabling legacy components without a clear application requirement can add unnecessary software without restoring the correct application DLL.

If MUSICMATCH was partially removed, Windows may still try to launch an old component at sign-in.
Remove the installed program
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find MUSICMATCH.
- Select its menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
If it is not listed:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Remove MUSICMATCH if it appears there.
- Restart Windows.
Disable a leftover startup entry
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable the MUSICMATCH entry.
- Restart Windows.
If the entry remains, check these locations carefully:
%AppData%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup
%ProgramData%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup
Remove only a shortcut that clearly points to the obsolete MUSICMATCH installation. Do not delete an unfamiliar file simply because its name resembles the DLL.

That may reveal a leftover scheduled task or another application that still references the old installation.
Do not use regsvr32 as a generic fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal repair command for ordinary application libraries.
Do not run:
regsvr32 filecachemgr.dll
unless documentation for the specific application explicitly requires registration and the DLL is known to support it. If the command reports that an entry point is missing, that means the command is inappropriate. It does not mean the DLL needs to be registered repeatedly.
Avoid random DLL download sites
Downloading filecachemgr.dll from an unfamiliar DLL archive is risky because the file may:

- Be incompatible with the application.
- Be the wrong architecture.
- Lack required dependencies.
- Be placed in a directory that Windows does not search for this program.
- Hide the real problem, such as an incomplete installation or stale startup entry.
The safe sources are your original MUSICMATCH installer, trusted original OEM media, or a complete repair or reinstall of the application. There is no verified current official MUSICMATCH download page to recommend for this file.
If reinstalling MUSICMATCH did not help

- The complete error text.
- The full path of
filecachemgr.dll, if it exists. - The name and path of the calling executable.
- Whether the failure occurs at startup or only when opening MUSICMATCH.
- The Windows version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The Event Viewer application error.
- Any error code such as
0xc000007b. - Whether antivirus quarantined the file.
- Whether the error began after uninstalling software, a cleanup operation, an update, or a system restore.
If Windows says the file is “not designed to run on Windows,” or reports 0xc000007b, suspect a corrupt binary, architecture mismatch, or missing dependency. That message does not by itself prove that filecachemgr.dll is the cause.

No. SysWOW64 is not a general storage folder for 32-bit application DLLs. A 32-bit MUSICMATCH program can run on 64-bit Windows while keeping its DLL in its own installation directory.
