“The program can’t start because rwuxthemes.dll is missing from your computer.” The rwuxthemes.dll error usually means an older third-party Windows application cannot find its bundled Rogue Wave Stingray library.
This is not a normal Windows system DLL. It is associated with RWUXTheme, a Stingray component used for UXTheme-related drawing functions in Windows applications. The safest repair is therefore to identify the application that requested it and repair or reinstall that application.

Which fix applies to you
Use this list to choose the right starting point:
- The error names a program you recently updated, moved, or reinstalled: repair or reinstall that program first.
- The application disappeared after antivirus activity: check Windows Security Protection history.
- The file exists, but Windows says “specified module could not be found”: a dependency of the DLL may be missing.
- The message says the file is not designed to run on Windows or shows error
0xc000007b: suspect the wrong architecture or an incompatible build. - Several unrelated applications have missing or damaged-file errors: check Windows components with DISM and SFC.
- You found
RWUXThemeS.dll,RWUXThemeSD.dll, or another variant: do not rename it torwuxthemes.dll. - You downloaded the file from a DLL website: remove that copy and reinstall the parent application from its original source.
Do not begin by copying a replacement into C:WindowsSystem32. That directory is not the normal confirmed location for this application library.
1. Identify the parent application
The correct DLL belongs with the application that requested it. Start there rather than searching Windows folders.

Check the error dialog
Read the title bar and message carefully. The application name may appear in the title, behind the missing-file message, or in a shortcut you used to launch it.
If the message appeared after double-clicking a shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the executable name and its installation folder.
If the program opens briefly before failing:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Look for the program’s
.exefile. - Right-click it and choose Open file location.
You can also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10. Search for the application that stopped launching.
Check recent changes
Ask what changed immediately before the error appeared:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- An application was updated or partially uninstalled.
- A program folder was moved to another drive.
- A disk-cleanup utility removed files.
- Antivirus quarantined a library.
- A backup or copied folder was used instead of the original installation.
- An old application was started from a network share.
- A compatibility layer or launcher changed the program’s working directory.
These clues usually identify the repair path faster than searching for the filename alone.
2. Repair or reinstall the application
This is the most likely solution for an application-local rwuxthemes.dll error.
Try the built-in repair option
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Some applications provide their own repair command instead:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, depending on what the installer offers.
- Complete the repair and restart Windows.
If the application has a launcher, use its file-verification command. The wording may be Verify, Scan and repair, Repair installation, or Check files.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A successful repair restores the application’s own DLLs and their expected directory structure. If the same message remains, continue with a complete reinstall.
Reinstall from the original installer
- Back up the application’s documents, templates, profiles, or saved projects.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Obtain the installer from the application’s original vendor or your organization’s approved software archive.
- Install the same product release required for your files.
- Apply the application’s official updates.
- Launch it from its newly created shortcut.
Do not install a different program merely because it uses a similar name. Stingray libraries have appeared in different engineering, CAD, laboratory, and development products, and the correct build is tied to the application that shipped it.
If reinstalling fails, preserve the installer log. Also check Event Viewer:
- Press Win + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
- Record the failing executable and any additional DLL named in the event.
3. Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine a legitimate application file, particularly after a definition update or when an old application behaves unusually.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the application stopped working.
- Expand an entry that names
rwuxthemes.dllor the affected application.
Restore the file only if all of these conditions are true:
- It came from the application’s verified installation.
- The application itself is legitimate.
- The file’s location and publisher information make sense.
- You can repair or reinstall the application immediately afterward.
Microsoft documents the Restore and Allow on device actions in its Protection History guidance.
If the file came from an unofficial DLL download site, do not restore or whitelist it. Uninstall the application if necessary, scan the computer, and reinstall the program from its original vendor-provided installer.
4. Check the filename and architecture
The file may not actually be the exact base filename shown in the error.
Related Stingray variants can include:
RWUXThemeS.dllRWUXThemeSD.dllrwuxthemesu90.dll- A product-renamed or vendor-specific build
A variant is not automatically interchangeable with rwuxthemes.dll. Do not rename one file to another. The application may expect a specific exported function set, compiler build, runtime dependency, or debug/release configuration.
Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application needs the correct 32-bit library, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. A 64-bit application needs a compatible 64-bit build.
To check the application:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Right-click the column headings.
- Choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
- Check whether the application is listed as 32-bit or 64-bit.
On some Windows versions, a 32-bit process is marked with a suffix such as *32. You can also inspect the application’s documentation or installation package.
A wrong-architecture file may produce messages including:
- “The file is not designed to run on Windows.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly.”
- Error
0xc000007b.
Reinstall the exact application build instead of trying to force a file from another release. Stingray distributions can use separate Win32 and x64 configurations, so a file with the right name can still be wrong for the program.
5. Repair a missing dependency
“Error loading rwuxthemes.dll. The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that rwuxthemes.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to find a second DLL required by it.
If the file exists beside the application executable:
- Do not move it.
- Check the application’s installer or repair option.
- Reinstall the runtime packages specified by the application vendor.
- Examine the Event Viewer entry for another named module.
- Use a reputable dependency-analysis utility to identify unresolved imports.
The application may require an older Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. Install the architecture required by the application, not merely the architecture of Windows. Microsoft explains that supported Visual C++ Redistributables can coexist and that the application’s architecture must match the installed runtime in its Visual C++ Redistributable documentation.

If the product installer includes a runtime, use that installer. Do not remove older redistributables indiscriminately, because another legacy application may depend on them.

6. Use system repair only for broader Windows problems
SFC and DISM are useful when Windows components are damaged. They are not the primary repair for one third-party application DLL.
Use them when several unrelated Windows programs show damaged-system-file symptoms, Windows features are failing, or system repair tools report corruption.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart the computer and test the application.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker instructions.
If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that is not evidence that the third-party DLL is healthy or present. SFC checks protected Windows system files, not every application file installed by a vendor.
When manually hunting through component repairs becomes repetitive, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it found; repair actions are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the missing file.

A graphics or display-driver problem can cause an application to fail after it starts, but it normally does not create a missing rwuxthemes.dll file. Do not treat driver updating as the first repair.

- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.

- Restart and test the application.
When checking many hardware drivers manually becomes the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; driver installation is performed by the full version. This is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the application that supplied rwuxthemes.dll.
Do not enable random Windows Features to supply this file. Optional features, .NET components, and legacy compatibility settings do not contain a verified replacement for an application-local Stingray library.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.
Running this command is normally inappropriate for RWUXTheme:
regsvr32 rwuxthemes.dll
It will usually fail with a registration error or make no useful change. The ordinary RWUXTheme runtime library is not verified here as a COM or ActiveX server that requires registration.
Use regsvr32 only when the application vendor specifically instructs you to register a particular DLL and provides the matching command, file, and architecture.
Why random DLL downloads and System32 copying fail
An arbitrary replacement can have:
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- A different Stingray release.
- Different compiler or runtime dependencies.
- A mismatched filename variant.
- A damaged or malicious payload.
- No relationship to the application that requested it.
Even a file with the correct name may not repair the underlying installation. Copying it into System32 can also create conflicts with applications that expect private, application-local libraries.
Manual replacement is justified only when the original vendor supplies the file, or when you restore a verified copy from the same installer, backup, or antivirus quarantine. Preserve the original folder structure and verify the file’s digital signature, source, hash, and relationship to the parent installer.
If the error remains
Use this escalation order:
- Reinstall the affected application completely.
- Confirm that the application’s folder was not moved or partially copied.
- Check Protection history again.
- Confirm the application’s architecture.
- Install the specific runtime required by the application.
- Review Event Viewer for a secondary missing module.
- Run a dependency-analysis utility against the application executable and
rwuxthemes.dll. - Contact the application vendor with the exact error, product version, Windows version, architecture, and installer log.
System Restore can help if the failure began immediately after a known software change:
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the change.
- Review the affected programs.
- Complete the restore and test the application.
System Restore is not a substitute for reinstalling the affected program, and it may not restore application files reliably.
FAQ
Is rwuxthemes.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with Rogue Wave’s Stingray RWUXTheme component and is normally supplied with an application that embeds or uses Stingray libraries.
Should I download rwuxthemes.dll separately?
No. Use the original application installer, repair package, launcher verification, or a verified backup. A random DLL may be unsafe or incompatible.
Is rwuxthemes.dll always 32-bit?
No. Do not assume a universal bitness, version, or file size. Match the DLL to the application’s architecture and build.
Can I rename RWUXThemeS.dll?
No. Related names indicate different builds or configurations. Reinstall the exact application version instead.
Will the Visual C++ Redistributable fix the error?
It may fix a missing dependency, but it does not replace rwuxthemes.dll and does not repair every legacy application. Install the runtime required by the parent application.
Should I run SFC for this file?
Only as a secondary check when there are broader Windows corruption symptoms. SFC does not normally restore third-party application files.
Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file is present?
A dependency of rwuxthemes.dll may be absent, or the file may be incompatible with the application’s architecture. Check the application installer, runtimes, Event Viewer, and dependency analysis.
Is the file malware?
The filename alone does not establish safety or malware. Verify its origin, digital signature, hash, location, and association with the legitimate application installer.
