What this file actually does
acme.dll is a real, non-Windows DLL name, but the name is not unique. Different applications can ship their own unrelated files with this filename.

The clearest documented match is the ACME.DLL utility component used by ACUCOBOL-GT from Micro Focus and Acucorp. It is linked by the product’s Windows executables and DLLs and normally resides beside those files in the application’s installation directory. It is not documented as a Windows component that belongs in C:WindowsSystem32.
ACUCOBOL-GT Web Runtime deployments can also require acme.dll in the runtime directory alongside files such as wrun32.dll, acugtax.ocx, the license file and ajpg32.dll. If one of those deployments is incomplete, the application may show an object-handler error or fail while opening a file.

The attribution sometimes shown for this filename as “Microsoft QuickStart Tutorials,” including specific Microsoft version numbers, cannot be verified through Microsoft documentation. Treat that description as unconfirmed metadata rather than proof of ownership. Similarly, a file called acme.dll associated with Nero or another application is not interchangeable with the ACUCOBOL-GT file.
Do not assume that a copy found online, in System32, or in another program’s folder is suitable.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Correct first action |
|---|---|---|
| Error appears when one older business application starts | Its private installation is incomplete | Repair or reinstall that application |
| Error appears after moving the program folder | The DLL was separated from its executable | Restore the original folder structure |
| Error began after an update or uninstall | Shared runtime files were removed or mixed | Reinstall the matching application or runtime |
| The program uses an ACUCOBOL-GT Web Runtime | The runtime directory is missing one or more companion files | Redeploy the complete runtime directory |
| Windows Security shows a detection | The DLL may have been quarantined | Check Protection history and verify provenance |
| “Specified module could not be found” remains after restoring the file | A dependency of acme.dll may be missing |

The file is in System32 but the program is installed elsewhere |
The wrong copy may be loading | Remove the assumption that System32 is the correct location |
| The problem affects several unrelated Windows components | Windows component corruption is possible | Run DISM and System File Checker after application repair |
Fix 1: Identify the program that owns acme.dll
Before changing files, determine which program is displaying the error.
Check the error dialog
Read the title bar and message carefully. Some dialogs name the executable or application. Write down:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- The application name
- The exact error text
- Whether the message says “missing,” “not found,” “could not be loaded,” or “not designed to run on Windows”
- Whether the error appears during startup, when opening a document, or when using a particular feature
If the dialog names an old business program, a browser-based runtime, or an application built with ACUCOBOL-GT, repair that program first.
Check the shortcut target
- Right-click the shortcut that launches the failing program.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target.
- Note the executable name and the folder containing it.
- Select Open File Location if that button is available.
- Look in that directory for
acme.dll.
The expected DLL location is normally the application or runtime directory that contains the executable needing it. A missing file there is more meaningful than a copy elsewhere on the computer.
Check installed applications
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for the program that produced the error.
- Select the three dots beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Look for Repair or Reset.
Use Repair first. Do not use Reset until you understand whether it will remove application settings or data.
For older desktop programs, use Control Panel instead:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the suspected application.
- Look for Change, Repair, or a vendor maintenance wizard.
Check Event Viewer
If the dialog does not identify the program:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Choose Filter Current Log in the right pane.
- Filter for Error and review entries created when the failure occurred.
- Look for Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and the application path.
The faulting module may be a dependency rather than acme.dll itself. Record the complete executable path before repairing anything.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the owning application
This is the most likely and safest fix for an application-private acme.dll.
Use the application’s repair option
If the program provides a launcher, maintenance utility, or settings panel:
- Open the program’s Start menu folder.
- Look for Repair, Modify, Maintenance, Verify files, or Scan and repair.
- Close the application.
- Run the repair option as an administrator if Windows requests permission.
- Restart Windows when the installer finishes.
- Launch the program again from its normal shortcut.
A successful repair restores the DLL to the correct application directory and keeps companion files from the same product release together.
Reinstall from trusted installation media
If repair is unavailable:
- Back up the application’s documents and configuration files.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Obtain the installer from the application vendor, your organization’s approved software repository, or the original deployment media.
- Install the same product and architecture required by the failing executable.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the application before copying back optional plugins or modified files.
For ACUCOBOL-GT, reinstall the matching ACUCOBOL-GT or extend runtime, or redeploy the complete runtime directory from the original distribution. Do not copy only acme.dll from another machine unless the vendor specifically provides that exact binary and deployment procedure.
If the application is managed by an office or line-of-business software team, ask for the approved package rather than downloading an individual DLL.
Fix 3: Restore a quarantined file carefully
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine a DLL. That does not prove the file was safe or malicious.
Review Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the application stopped working.
- Expand any detection associated with the application directory.
- Record the detected path and detection name.
Restore a file only when all of these are true:
- The path belongs to the expected application.
- The application came from an approved vendor or deployment source.
- The installer and file provenance can be verified.
- Your organization’s security policy permits restoration.
If Defender detects the file again, do not create an exception simply to make the application start. Remove the application and reinstall it from clean vendor media. Run a full scan after the reinstall.
A DLL found in a writable temporary folder, a user download directory, or an unexpected System32 location deserves additional scrutiny. Its filename alone does not establish legitimacy.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
ACUCOBOL-GT documentation refers to Windows programs such as CCBL32.EXE and WRUN32.EXE, which are 32-bit executables. A 32-bit application normally needs the matching 32-bit runtime files, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows.
Do not replace a 32-bit acme.dll with a 64-bit file, or combine files from different products.
To check an executable:
- Open the application folder.
- Right-click the program’s
.exefile. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and record the product information.
- If available, check the vendor’s documentation for supported architecture.
- Ask the vendor or administrator for the matching runtime package.
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit applications may be installed under C:Program Files (x86) rather than C:Program Files. That path is not itself proof of a problem. The important point is that the executable and its private DLLs must come from the same compatible installation.
If a repair installs files from a different release, uninstall that mixed installation and deploy one complete, matching package.
Fix 5: Repair an ACUCOBOL-GT Web Runtime deployment
If the error occurs in a browser-based or web-delivered ACUCOBOL-GT application, inspect the runtime directory rather than the Windows system folders.
The vendor’s deployment documentation identifies a group of files that may need to be delivered together, including:

Ask the administrator who deployed the application to compare the runtime directory with the approved distribution package. Restore the complete directory from that package, not just the missing filename.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the deployment uses an obsolete ActiveX or compatibility layer, the application may also require a supported legacy configuration. Replacing one DLL will not correct an incompatible browser, missing control registration, blocked component, or incomplete runtime deployment.
Fix 6: Determine whether a dependency is actually missing
Windows may report that acme.dll could not be found when the file exists but one of its dependent modules cannot be loaded.
Check the following:
- Confirm that
acme.dllis in the same directory as the executable that needs it. - Confirm that the file is not zero bytes or obviously incomplete.
- Check whether Windows Security quarantined a companion file.
- Review Event Viewer for a more specific module name.
- Repair or reinstall the entire parent application.
Use a reputable dependency-analysis utility only for diagnosis and only according to your organization’s policy. Do not replace dependency files individually from unrelated sources. A dependency from another product can introduce architecture and version conflicts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Run DISM and System File Checker for suspected Windows corruption
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate an application-private acme.dll, so run them after checking the owning application.

- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:

- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and retest. If it reports that it could not repair some files, save the result and repeat the application repair rather than copying acme.dll into a Windows folder.
When manually repeating DISM and SFC is tedious and you cannot tell which Windows components are damaged, Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show what it identifies; its full version performs the repair. It is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when acme.dll belongs to that application.
Fix 8: Update Windows and check optional components
Windows updates can correct operating-system compatibility problems, although they do not generally supply a third-party acme.dll.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Test the affected application.
If the program depends on an optional Windows feature:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the enabled features against the application vendor’s requirements.
- Change a feature only when the vendor or administrator specifically requires it.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not enable random legacy features as a substitute for reinstalling the application. Some older programs require a particular compatibility component, but the program’s documentation should identify it.
Fix 9: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A driver update is not a normal fix for an application-private DLL. Consider it only when Event Viewer identifies a graphics, printer, storage, or other device driver in the failure, or when the application vendor lists a driver requirement.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the failure.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
- Visit the device manufacturer’s approved support page or use your organization’s driver management system.
- Install the correct driver for the Windows version and device.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not remove a working driver merely because acme.dll is missing. When hunting through many device models and driver versions is the main obstacle, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues and identify updates; its full version performs the installation. It is optional, and it does not replace repairing the application that owns acme.dll.
Do not register or copy the DLL blindly
Do not run this as a generic repair:
regsvr32 acme.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, typically ActiveX or COM components. There is no verified evidence that the ACUCOBOL-GT utility DLL is a self-registering component. Registering it can produce a misleading error and does not repair a missing dependency.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAlso avoid copying acme.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- Another application’s directory
- A temporary folder added to the system path
The correct location is determined by the owning application’s installation and deployment instructions.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A download site may provide:
- The wrong product’s file
- The wrong processor architecture
- A different release
- A modified or malicious file
- A DLL that hides the real missing dependency
It can also leave the application with mismatched runtime files. Use the original application installer, approved deployment media, or the software vendor’s official support channel instead. Microsoft support and documentation are appropriate sources for Windows repair commands, but Microsoft does not establish that every file named acme.dll is a Windows component.
If the error remains after reinstalling
Record the following before contacting the application vendor or IT administrator:
- The exact error text.
- The executable name and complete path.
- The application and runtime version shown in its installer or file properties.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The full path where
acme.dllis expected. - Whether the file exists there.
- Any quarantine event and detection name.
- The Event Viewer faulting module.
- Whether the problem began after an uninstall, update, file move, or security event.
- Whether the application uses an ACUCOBOL-GT Web Runtime.
This information distinguishes a missing application file from a missing dependency, incompatible architecture, blocked ActiveX component, or unauthorized replacement.
Frequently asked questions
Is acme.dll a Microsoft Windows file?
No verified source establishes acme.dll as a standard Windows operating-system file. The strongest documented identification is the ACUCOBOL-GT utility DLL from Micro Focus and Acucorp, while other unrelated applications may use the same filename.
Should I install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable?
Not solely because acme.dll is missing. Install a Visual C++ package only when the application vendor or a separate error identifies a missing Visual C++ runtime dependency.
Is a copy in System32 legitimate?
Not automatically. ACUCOBOL-GT documentation describes the DLL as being installed with the product’s executables, not as a Windows system component. Verify the publisher, path and application ownership before trusting any copy.
Will SFC or DISM restore acme.dll?
Normally no. They repair Windows component corruption. They are useful when Windows itself is damaged, but the usual fix for an application-private DLL is repairing or reinstalling the owning program.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file is present?
A dependency of acme.dll may be missing, corrupted, blocked, or the wrong architecture. Reinstall the complete parent runtime and inspect Event Viewer rather than replacing individual files.
Can I use regsvr32?
Not as a general solution. Use it only when the vendor documents that the specific DLL is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component and provides the correct registration procedure.
What is the safest fix?
Identify the calling executable, verify its installation directory, and repair or reinstall that exact application or matching runtime from trusted vendor media. Do not mix files from Microsoft-indexed software, Nero, ACUCOBOL-GT, or another unrelated product.
