cscomp.dll is a Microsoft Visual C# Compiler file used by older Visual Studio .NET and .NET Framework installations. If Windows says that cscomp.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the application or legacy .NET Framework installation that owns the file rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

The file is not normally a standalone Windows component in C:WindowsSystem32, and it is not part of the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. Historical .NET Framework installations placed it in paths such as:

C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv1.1.4322cscomp.dll
C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727cscomp.dll

The exact path matters. A 32-bit cscomp.dll from one .NET generation is not a universal replacement for every other version.

Before repairing cscomp.dll

Do not download cscomp.dll from a random DLL repository and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or the program’s folder. That approach can introduce malware, install the wrong architecture or version, and leave the damaged .NET or application installation in the same broken state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the original application installer, Windows Features, Microsoft’s official .NET Framework downloads, or Windows repair tools instead. The correct fix depends on the complete error message, the executable named in it, and the directory shown in the error.

Write down these details before changing anything:

  • The full path shown for cscomp.dll
  • The name of the program that fails
  • Whether the error appears when launching one program or at every startup
  • Whether the path contains Framework or Framework64
  • Whether antivirus software recently quarantined the file
  • Whether the problem began after an update, uninstall, cleanup operation, or malware-removal scan

Fix 1: Repair the program that reports cscomp.dll

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

If only one application reports the error, repair that application first. A legacy program may have installed its own .NET components or may depend on a particular Visual Studio-era runtime.

Repair through Windows Settings

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps.
  5. Find the program that produces the cscomp.dll error.
  6. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  7. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  8. Select Repair.
  9. Start the program again.

If Repair is not available, use Reset only if you understand that the application may lose local settings or stored data. For desktop software, the original installer is usually safer.

Repair through Control Panel

  1. Press Windows+R.
  2. Type:

text
appwiz.cpl

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select the affected program.
  3. Choose Change, Repair, or Modify.
  4. Follow the installer’s repair process.
  5. Restart Windows if requested.

If the program was removed incompletely, uninstall it from the same list, restart the computer, and reinstall it from the original vendor installer. Do not delete individual DLLs or copy files from another computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to tell whether this worked

The repair worked if the application opens without the cscomp.dll message and does not immediately recreate the error after a restart.

If the same message returns, check whether the error path points to a Microsoft.NET Framework directory. If it does, continue with the .NET Framework repair steps below. If the path points inside the application’s own directory, repeat the application repair or perform a complete reinstall.

Fix 2: Enable .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows 10 or 11

Time needed: 5–20 minutes, plus any required restart

Many older applications target .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, or 3.5. On supported Windows versions, these compatibility layers are provided through the .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) Windows feature.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Installing .NET Framework 4.x does not automatically replace every application built for .NET Framework 1.0 through 3.5. Microsoft documents these as different runtime generations. See Microsoft’s version and dependency guidance.

Enable the feature

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Features.
  3. Select Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. Tick .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0).
  5. Select OK.
  6. If Windows asks to download files, allow it to do so.
  7. Restart the computer if prompted.
  8. Launch the affected program again.

Microsoft’s documented procedure is described in its guide to installing .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows.

If Windows cannot download the feature

A failed installation can result from Windows Update problems, restricted network access, or component-store corruption. First install pending updates:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Try enabling .NET Framework 3.5 again.

If the feature still fails, continue to the DISM and SFC section. Those tools can repair Windows component-store problems that prevent optional features from installing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to tell whether this worked

Open the program that previously failed. If it starts normally, the application was missing a compatible .NET Framework layer.

If the message specifically names a path containing v1.1.4322, .NET Framework 3.5 may not be sufficient. Continue with the legacy .NET Framework 1.1 section.

Fix 3: Install the legacy .NET Framework generation required by the program

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

A path containing v1.1.4322 indicates a much older .NET Framework generation. Very old software may require .NET Framework 1.1 rather than the .NET 2.0/3.0/3.5 compatibility layer.

Use Microsoft’s official .NET Framework 1.1 Redistributable Package only when the application explicitly requires it or its documentation identifies that dependency. The legacy package is named dotnetfx.exe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not install it merely because the filename is missing. Older runtimes can have compatibility and security limitations, and the application may instead need to be repaired or replaced.

Install it for a known requirement

  1. Confirm the failing program is an older application that requires .NET Framework 1.1.
  2. Download the package from Microsoft’s Download Center.
  3. Run the installer.
  4. Follow the setup instructions.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Repair or reinstall the affected application if it still reports cscomp.dll.
  7. Launch the application again.

Do not assume that installing .NET Framework 4.8 or 4.8.1 will satisfy a 1.1 dependency. Microsoft’s official .NET Framework download page covers current 4.x releases, but those releases do not replace every earlier runtime.

How to identify the relevant generation

The directory in the error is useful:

Error path What it usually indicates
Microsoft.NETFrameworkv1.1.4322 .NET Framework 1.1-era software
Microsoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727 .NET Framework 2.0-era compiler files, also relevant to older 3.0/3.5 applications
Microsoft.NETFramework64... A 64-bit framework location
An application folder A program-specific installation or bundled component

These paths are clues, not proof that a particular replacement DLL will work. The executable and application installer remain the authority for what must be installed.

Fix 4: Repair .NET Framework with Microsoft’s Repair Tool

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

If .NET Framework 3.5 is enabled but the file is still missing, use Microsoft’s .NET Framework Repair Tool. The documented tool supports .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and supported 4.x installations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Download the tool from Microsoft Support.
  2. Run it as an administrator.
  3. Accept the license terms.
  4. Follow the recommended repair steps.
  5. Restart Windows if requested.
  6. Test the affected application.

The repair tool cannot necessarily restore a file that belonged only to an old application or an obsolete Visual Studio installation. If the error path identifies a particular application, repair that application as well.

When the manual process involves repeated repair attempts and uncertainty about which Windows components changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it detects; its repair action is performed by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for this fix.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Time needed: 15–40 minutes

Use DISM and System File Checker when:

  • .NET Framework 3.5 will not enable
  • Windows reports damaged component files
  • The problem began after an interrupted Windows or .NET update
  • Several Windows programs are failing
  • The error path appears to involve a Windows-managed framework installation

These tools are less likely to restore a DLL that belonged solely to an old application or developer product. They repair Windows-managed files and the component store.

Run DISM first

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter this command:

text
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish.

Do not close the window simply because progress appears to pause. DISM may take time while it checks and repairs the Windows image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run SFC second

After DISM completes, enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in current Windows repair guidance. See Microsoft’s instructions for using System File Checker and repairing Windows Update errors.

Interpret the result

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no damaged protected system files. Continue with the application or .NET repair.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart Windows and test the program.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Restart, run DISM again if necessary, and review the application installation.
  • DISM failed: Install pending Windows updates and retry. If it continues to fail, Windows may need a repair installation or a matching installation source.

When repeatedly comparing DISM and SFC results becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that identifies detected system issues; the repair function requires the full version, and Microsoft’s built-in tools remain the appropriate first step.

Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine and security history

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

Antivirus software or a malware-removal tool may quarantine cscomp.dll, particularly if an old application was modified or installed from an untrusted source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open your antivirus application.
  2. Open Quarantine, Detection history, or Protection history.
  3. Search for cscomp.dll.
  4. Check the file’s original path.
  5. Confirm whether the affected program and installation are trusted.
  6. If the file is digitally signed by Microsoft and belongs to a known installation, follow the antivirus product’s restore process.
  7. Repair or reinstall the owning .NET Framework or application afterward.
  8. Run a full security scan.

Do not disable security software just to force an unknown DLL into a system folder. If the file was detected as suspicious, reinstall the parent application from a trusted original source instead of restoring it blindly.

How to tell whether this worked

The quarantine history should show whether the file was removed and from which directory. If restoring it immediately causes another detection, stop and reinstall the application or runtime after completing a full scan.

Fix 7: Investigate a startup-only error

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

If cscomp.dll appears every time Windows starts, but no known program is being launched, the message may come from an orphaned startup entry. The original application may have been uninstalled while its launcher remained.

A message mentioning csc.exe does not automatically mean Windows itself is damaged. A startup reference can point to an old development tool, a removed application, or unwanted software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Startup apps

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for unknown or obsolete entries.
  4. Right-click a suspicious entry and select Disable.
  5. Restart Windows.

Do not disable entries you cannot identify if doing so could affect security software or hardware utilities.

Check Task Scheduler

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Task Scheduler.
  3. Open Task Scheduler.
  4. Select Task Scheduler Library.
  5. Review tasks that run at logon or startup.
  6. Inspect the Actions tab for references to csc.exe, an old application path, or a missing directory.
  7. Disable only a task you have positively identified as obsolete.

Check Services and the application uninstall list

Review Settings > Apps > Installed apps and Control Panel > Programs and Features for the program that originally installed the startup command. If it is still installed, repair or uninstall it using its own installer.

A startup error that names csrss.exe deserves extra caution. Legitimate Windows csrss.exe does not prove that it needs this particular DLL. The message may be caused by a bad startup command or malware, so scan the system and verify the executable path before changing anything.

Fix 8: Verify 32-bit and 64-bit paths

Time needed: 5–10 minutes

On 64-bit Windows, older 32-bit .NET Framework files normally appear under:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFramework

64-bit framework components may appear under:

C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFramework64

The Framework and Framework64 directories are not interchangeable. A 32-bit application may need the 32-bit framework even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

To check the operating system architecture:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Review System type.

To identify the failing executable, right-click the application shortcut and choose Open file location, or inspect the full path shown in the error. Do not copy a file from Framework64 into Framework, or the reverse, to see whether it works.

The commonly indexed historical cscomp.dll record is a 32-bit file with version 7.0.9951.0 and an approximate size of 0.56 MB. That metadata is not a universal selection rule. Multiple .NET Framework and Visual Studio generations have existed, so the version must match the program that needs it.

Fix 9: Update drivers only when the error is part of a hardware software package

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

A driver is not the usual owner of cscomp.dll. However, if the message began with a hardware utility, scanner package, printer suite, or other vendor software, update or repair that complete package rather than replacing the DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Device Manager.
  3. Open Device Manager.
  4. Expand the category for the affected hardware.
  5. Right-click the device.
  6. Select Update driver.
  7. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  8. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

For a vendor utility, use the original vendor installer to repair the application as well. Device Manager updates the device driver, not necessarily the older .NET components bundled with the utility.

When manually checking many device categories and driver versions becomes time-consuming, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show outdated drivers; driver installation through the full version is optional, and updating a driver will not replace the need to repair an application that specifically owns cscomp.dll.

Why regsvr32 cscomp.dll usually does not help

regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.

cscomp.dll is associated with the legacy Visual C# compiler and .NET Framework toolchain. Registering it manually is generally not part of repairing this error, and a command such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 cscomp.dll

may simply produce an error or change nothing. Microsoft explains the purpose and behavior of regsvr32.

Do not use regsvr32 as a substitute for enabling .NET Framework, repairing the application, or reinstalling the correct runtime.

Common causes of cscomp.dll errors

The most likely causes are:

Cause Appropriate repair
Incomplete or corrupted .NET Framework installation Enable or repair the required .NET Framework generation
Damaged legacy application Use the application installer’s Repair option or reinstall it
Wrong runtime generation Enable .NET Framework 3.5 or install .NET Framework 1.1 only for a confirmed requirement
Windows component-store corruption Run DISM, then SFC
Antivirus quarantine Verify the file and reinstall the owning runtime or application
Interrupted Windows or .NET update Restart, install updates, then retry repair
Orphaned startup command Identify and disable or remove the obsolete startup task
Incorrect architecture Match the failing executable with Framework or Framework64

The cause cannot be confirmed from the filename alone. The full path, failing executable, Windows version, and timing of the error are needed for a reliable diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

Is cscomp.dll a Windows system file?

It is a Microsoft file associated with the legacy Visual C# compiler and older Visual Studio .NET or .NET Framework installations. It is not a file that every Windows installation should contain, and it is not normally a standalone System32 component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is cscomp.dll part of Visual C++ Redistributable?

No. cscomp.dll belongs to the Visual C# compiler and older .NET Framework or Visual Studio toolchain. Installing a Visual C++ Redistributable package usually does not repair this error.

Will installing .NET Framework 4.8 fix cscomp.dll?

Not necessarily. .NET Framework 4.x does not automatically replace every dependency from .NET Framework 1.0 through 3.5. First identify the path and application requirement. Many older programs need the .NET Framework 3.5 Windows feature, while very old software may require .NET Framework 1.1.

Can I copy cscomp.dll from another computer?

No. The other computer may have a different .NET Framework generation, architecture, servicing state, or compiler installation. Copying the file can create a version mismatch and does not repair the owning installation.

Should I put cscomp.dll in System32?

No. The historical framework paths are under Microsoft.NETFramework or Framework64, not necessarily System32. Manual copying can break the application’s expected runtime layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does “the specified module could not be found” mean?

It may mean that cscomp.dll itself is missing, but it can also mean that a dependency of the DLL is unavailable or incompatible. Repair the complete runtime or application after checking the full path rather than copying another DLL.

What if the error appears when Windows starts?

Look for an obsolete startup app, scheduled task, service, or damaged application installation. If the message mentions csc.exe or even csrss.exe, verify the complete executable path and run a security scan. The name alone does not establish that a core Windows process requires cscomp.dll.

If none of the repairs work

Record the following before contacting the application vendor or planning a Windows repair:

  • The complete error text
  • The full cscomp.dll path
  • The failing executable
  • Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition and build
  • Whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Installed .NET Framework versions
  • Antivirus quarantine results
  • The final DISM message
  • The final SFC message
  • When the problem started and what changed immediately before it

If the file belongs to an old application, the definitive repair is usually that application’s original installer. If Windows component repair repeatedly fails across multiple programs, consider a Windows repair installation rather than continuing to test unrelated DLL copies.
