If Windows says “This application failed to start because hfxgui55.dll was not found,” or “The program can’t start because hfxgui55.dll is missing from your computer,” the problem usually belongs to an old Hollywood FX installation. hfxgui55.dll is the “Hollywood FX UI” component from Hollywood FX 5 by Pinnacle Systems, not a Windows system file.
The safest solution is to repair or reinstall the complete Pinnacle, Hollywood FX, or related Studio installation from its original disc, purchased installer, or a legitimate vendor-provided source. Do not download the individual DLL and copy it into a Windows system folder.
Common hfxgui55.dll error messages
You may see one of these reported variants:
- “This application failed to start because hfxgui55.dll was not found.”
- “The file hfxgui55.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: hfxgui55.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading hfxgui55.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because hfxgui55.dll is missing from your computer.”
These messages are not all equivalent. A missing-file message usually means the DLL is absent from the application installation. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that hfxgui55.dll is present but one of its dependencies is missing.
The 60-second answer
- Identify which Pinnacle, Hollywood FX, Studio, or Avid-era program is showing the error.
- Check whether antivirus quarantined the file.
- Repair or reinstall the complete parent application or Hollywood FX content pack.
- Do not place the file in
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - If the file is present but will not load, investigate dependencies and compatibility.
- Use Windows repair commands only as a secondary check because
hfxgui55.dllis not a protected Windows component.
If you no longer have a legitimate installer or original disc, recover the program from your own installation media or licensed archive. If that is impossible, replacing the legacy application with a supported video editor may be safer than obtaining an isolated DLL from an unknown source.

What is hfxgui55.dll?
hfxgui55.dll is a third-party application library described as “Hollywood FX UI.” It is associated with Hollywood FX 5, a legacy visual-effects product from Pinnacle Systems.
Pinnacle’s archived product names included Hollywood FX and HFX packages for Studio, including Plus, Pro, and Mega editions. That means the affected program may not be named exactly “Hollywood FX 5.” The file could have been installed as part of a Pinnacle Studio bundle, an HFX content pack, or another older Pinnacle video-editing setup.
It is not a Windows component. Microsoft does not distribute it through Windows Update, Windows Features, or its Visual C++ downloads. Public file listings also disagree about its exact version and size, so treat unofficial version numbers as unreliable.
Why the error happens
The most likely causes are:
| Cause | What usually resolves it |
|---|---|
| Hollywood FX or Pinnacle files were removed or damaged | Repair or reinstall the complete parent product |
| Antivirus quarantined the DLL | Review Protection History and verify the original installer |
| A dependency is missing | Reinstall the application, then investigate its required runtime |
| The application was moved or restored from backup | Return it to its original installation path or reinstall it |
| A cleanup or uninstall removed shared content | Reinstall the matching HFX or Studio component |
| The legacy application is incompatible with current Windows | Use compatibility settings or an older supported environment |
| Windows itself is damaged | Run DISM followed by SFC as a secondary check |
A recent uninstall, reinstall, disk cleanup, backup restore, antivirus event, or manual move of the program folder is an important clue.
Fix 1: Identify the parent application
Before changing files, find the program that requests hfxgui55.dll.
If the error appears when launching a shortcut
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Note whether the path contains names such as
Pinnacle,Studio,Hollywood FX, orHFX. - Select Open File Location if that button is available.
Look for the executable and its surrounding folders. A normal application DLL is commonly stored beside the program that loads it or within one of that program’s component folders.
If you do not know which program is affected
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Processes or Details.
- Start the older video application again.
- Note the program name that appears before the error.
- Right-click the process if it remains visible and choose Open file location.
Do not delete or replace files yet. The exact parent application determines which installer or content pack you need.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove an old DLL if it detects suspicious behavior, a damaged installer, or an uncertain reputation. The file being old does not by itself prove that it is malware.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for the affected application or
hfxgui55.dll. - Expand an entry to see the detected path, detection name, and action taken.
Before restoring anything, confirm that the file came from your original installation media or a legitimate vendor installer. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can expose the computer if the detection is valid.
If the detection points to a downloaded DLL, do not restore it. Delete it and obtain the complete application from a trusted source instead.
If the file was quarantined from an original installer, scan that installer and verify its provenance before proceeding. Do not immediately create an antivirus exclusion. Repeated detections should be investigated rather than bypassed.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall Hollywood FX or Pinnacle Studio
This is the most likely fix because hfxgui55.dll belongs to the application rather than Windows.
Use an available repair option
- Press Windows+I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find Pinnacle Studio, Hollywood FX, HFX, or the related video application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again after the repair finishes.
Older installers may provide their own repair option instead:
- Insert the original installation disc or mount the legitimate installer.
- Run the setup program.
- Choose Repair, Modify, or Reinstall.
- Keep the Hollywood FX and content-pack components selected.
- Complete the setup.
- Restart Windows before testing the application.
If no repair option exists, uninstalling and reinstalling the complete product may be necessary. Make sure you have the installer and any license information before uninstalling.
Reinstall the matching content
Some Studio installations separated the editing application from effects libraries. If Studio starts but fails when opening a project or effect browser, reinstall the Hollywood FX or HFX content component as well as the main program.
Do not assume that installing a similarly named Studio release will restore the exact file. Use the installer that originally supplied the component whenever possible.

How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- the application opens without requesting
hfxgui55.dll; - the Hollywood FX interface or effect browser loads;
- an affected project opens without a missing-component message.
If the same message returns, check the installation directory and continue with the dependency and compatibility steps below. Do not download a replacement DLL as the next step.
Fix 4: Check whether the file exists in the application folder
A file can exist while Windows still reports that it cannot be loaded.
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Select Open File Location.
- Search that folder for
hfxgui55.dll. - If it is not there, search the known installation folders for the file.
- Do not copy a version from another computer or from a download website.
If the file is present in the original application directory but the error remains, the problem may be:

- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
- a missing dependency;
- a damaged installation;
- insufficient permissions;
- an inaccessible path;
- a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch;
- an incompatible legacy component.
Right-click the main application executable, select Properties, open the Compatibility tab, and try Run this program as an administrator once for testing. If that helps, the problem may involve permissions, but administrator mode is not a substitute for repairing the installation.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFix 5: Understand 32-bit and 64-bit handling
Public metadata identifies hfxgui55.dll as a Win32, or 32-bit, component associated with the old 32-bit Hollywood FX software.
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows and can load a 32-bit DLL from its own program directory. It does not follow that the file belongs in a Windows system directory.
Do not use these folders as a routine repair destination:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64
The names are counterintuitive: on 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components. Neither folder is a general-purpose storage location for third-party application DLLs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe correct location is normally determined by the original application installer. Copying the file into both directories can create confusion, permission problems, and the wrong search path without fixing the parent program.
Fix 6: Investigate missing dependencies
The message “The specified module could not be found” may mean that Windows found hfxgui55.dll but could not load something it requires.
Start with the application’s installer. Reinstalling the complete Hollywood FX or Pinnacle product is safer than guessing which runtime is needed.
If the installer requires a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package, use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. A 32-bit legacy application generally needs the x86 package, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Install only the package required by the application or its installer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The Visual C++ package does not contain hfxgui55.dll. It can repair a missing runtime dependency, but it cannot replace the Hollywood FX file.
Also check the application’s own folders for runtime files and setup documentation. Avoid downloading individual runtime DLLs from third-party sites.
Fix 7: Use Windows repair commands as a secondary check
Because hfxgui55.dll is not a Windows file, DISM and SFC will not normally recreate it. They are appropriate when other Windows programs also fail, system files are damaged, or the application began failing after broader system corruption.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Run System File Checker second
Open an elevated Command Prompt again if necessary and enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows, then test the affected program.
Microsoft documents this DISM-then-SFC sequence in its System File Checker guidance.
If SFC reports that it repaired files but the Hollywood FX error remains, return to the application installer. The commands repair protected Windows components, not the vendor DLL.
Running these commands manually can mean repeating scans without knowing which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies, while repairs are handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling Hollywood FX remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Fix 8: Try compatibility settings for the legacy program
Hollywood FX 5 belongs to an older software generation and may fail because the surrounding application is no longer compatible with modern Windows.
- Locate the main application executable.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version from the list.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the program and test the operation that previously failed.
Do not assume compatibility mode will repair a missing file. It can help only when the complete application is installed but cannot operate correctly in the current environment.
If the program depends on obsolete installers, copy protection, or unsupported components, an older supported Windows environment may be required. Keep that environment isolated and use original licensed software.

Fix 9: Check Windows Features only when the installer requires them
Windows Features are not a source for hfxgui55.dll, but an old installer may depend on a legacy Windows component.
- Press Windows+R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the Windows Features list.
- Enable a feature only if the application’s original documentation or installer specifically requires it.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable unrelated features in the hope that they will recreate the DLL. If setup fails while installing an old application, record the exact setup message and use the installer’s documented requirements.
Fix 10: Check Device Manager only after hardware or driver changes
A graphics or capture-driver update normally does not supply hfxgui55.dll, but a recent driver change can affect an old video application.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and any capture-device category.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the Device status message on the General tab.
- Use Roll Back Driver only if the option is available and the problem began immediately after that driver change.
- Otherwise select Update driver and use a driver supplied by the computer or hardware manufacturer.
Do not expect a driver update to install hfxgui55.dll. If a driver is genuinely involved, restore the correct driver for the hardware and then repair the Pinnacle application.
Manually hunting through many driver versions can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling Hollywood FX when that is the cause.
Fix 11: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the application worked recently and the failure began after an uninstall, update, cleanup, or system change, System Restore may help.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose Next.
- Select a restore point from before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore can reverse applications, settings, and system changes after the selected point. It is not a substitute for having the original Hollywood FX installer and may remove software installed later. Microsoft explains this behavior in its System Restore guidance.
Why regsvr32 is usually the wrong fix
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 hfxgui55.dll
Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a tool for registering self-registering OLE, ActiveX, or COM DLLs. A normal application-library DLL does not become usable merely because it was registered.
Registration can also produce a misleading error if you use the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit version of the command. Use regsvr32 only if the original vendor documentation explicitly says that this particular DLL is a COM or ActiveX server and provides registration instructions. Otherwise, repair the application that owns the file.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading only hfxgui55.dll from an unknown website is risky and often ineffective because the file may be:
- the wrong version;
- the wrong architecture;
- modified or tampered with;
- bundled with malware;
- missing its required dependencies;
- incompatible with the installed Hollywood FX release.
It can also conceal the real problem, such as antivirus quarantine, a damaged content pack, or an application that was only partially uninstalled.
There is no reason to place this third-party DLL in Windows system directories. Use original installation media, a legitimate licensed installer, or a verified vendor archive for the complete application.
If you no longer have the installer
Search your own records for:
- the original Pinnacle or Studio disc;
- a purchased-content installer;
- a backup containing the complete program installer;
- the original license information;
- installation media supplied with the computer or editing hardware.
Do not download an isolated DLL as a substitute. If the old installer cannot be recovered, the practical choices are to contact the software seller through an official support channel, restore the complete installation from a known-good backup, or migrate the project to a supported editor.
Frequently asked questions
Is hfxgui55.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a third-party application DLL associated with Hollywood FX 5 from Pinnacle Systems.
Which program installed it?
The most direct association is Hollywood FX 5. It may have arrived through Pinnacle Studio, an HFX Plus or Mega package, another Hollywood FX content pack, or an older related video-editing installation.
Can I copy it into System32?
No. The correct location is normally the application’s own installation directory. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 is not a supported general fix.
Does Visual C++ Redistributable replace the file?
No. It may repair a missing dependency, but it does not contain hfxgui55.dll.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Usually not. regsvr32 is for DLLs designed for self-registration, not ordinary application libraries.
What if the file is present but the error remains?
Repair the complete application, check dependencies, verify permissions and the installation path, and test compatibility settings. A present DLL can still fail to load when a dependency is missing.
Will SFC restore hfxgui55.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components. It does not normally restore third-party Hollywood FX files.
What is the safest final answer if none of this works?
Use the original installer or a legitimate licensed archive to reinstall the complete Pinnacle or Hollywood FX product. If that is unavailable and the software cannot run in a compatible environment, replacing the unsupported application is safer than using an untrusted DLL download.
