Start with this quick diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, note:
- Which game, editor, media player, or other program shows the error
- Whether one program fails or several programs fail
- Whether the problem began after Windows Update, a rollback, antivirus detection, codec installation, disk cleanup, or reinstalling an old application
- Whether the message says the file is missing or whether the program crashes and names
quartz.dllas the faulting module - Whether the affected application is 32-bit or 64-bit
quartz.dll is a genuine Windows component used by DirectShow, Microsoft’s legacy audio and video playback, capture, and filter architecture. If quartz.dll is missing or damaged, Windows or an older media application may fail to start.
Do not download a replacement DLL from a random DLL website. The file may contain malware, belong to a different Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or leave the real Windows or application problem unresolved.
What quartz.dll does
The file is historically described as ActiveMovie Runtime and is associated with Microsoft’s ActiveMovie technology. ActiveMovie evolved into DirectShow, which handles media streams through components such as source filters, codecs, renderers, and filter graphs.
Microsoft now classifies DirectShow as a legacy technology and recommends newer media APIs, including Media Foundation, for new applications. Older games, video editors, capture tools, media players, and Windows components can still depend on DirectShow.

On a normal supported Windows installation, quartz.dll is generally supplied by Windows. It is not normally installed by Visual C++, .NET, or a separate “quartz.dll package.” Older software may also include or expect a private copy, so the correct repair depends on which program owns the failing copy.
Microsoft documents DirectShow and its legacy redistribution history in its DirectShow overview and DirectShow build-environment guidance.
What the error message means
| Message or symptom | What it usually indicates |
|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because quartz.dll is missing from your computer” | Windows or the application cannot find a required copy |
| “quartz.dll was not found” | The loader could not locate the file or one of its required dependencies |
| “The code execution cannot proceed because quartz.dll was not found” | The application failed during startup because a required module could not load |
| “quartz.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” | The file may be corrupted, incompatible, blocked, or the wrong architecture |
| “Cannot find quartz.dll” | The application’s expected path or dependency chain is broken |
A crash report names quartz.dll |
DirectShow was involved in the crash, but the DLL is not necessarily damaged |
A crash naming quartz.dll can instead be caused by the application, a codec or filter, a graphics or audio driver, or a particular media file. Treat a crash differently from a simple missing-file message.
Fix 1: Restart, update Windows, and test again
A pending Windows update or incomplete servicing operation can leave system components unavailable or mismatched.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Open the affected program again.
If the program now starts, the problem was likely related to a pending update or a temporary servicing state. If it still fails, continue with the repair commands below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair when multiple applications fail, quartz.dll is absent from the Windows directories, or the error began after a system problem.
DISM repairs the Windows component image. System File Checker then checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies. Run DISM first.
Run DISM
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
When DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully, run SFC in the same administrator Command Prompt:

- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program.
Understand the SFC result
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not find corruption in the files it checked. Continue with the application, codec, architecture, or crash-specific steps below.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the program again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again if necessary, restart, and repeat
sfc /scannow. If it still cannot repair the files, use the escalation steps later in this guide.
Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance documents this DISM-before-SFC sequence.
Running these commands manually is free but can be repetitive when you do not know which component changed or whether the repair completed cleanly. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention, while its repair actions are available through the full version; it is optional, and DISM/SFC remain the standard Windows repair path.
Fix 3: Check whether the Windows copies exist
On 64-bit Windows, 64-bit system components normally reside in %SystemRoot%System32. The 32-bit system components used by 32-bit applications are handled through %SystemRoot%SysWOW64.
The folder names are confusing: on 64-bit Windows, System32 conventionally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit system files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Open Start.
- Type PowerShell.

Do not judge a file only by its version number or size. Windows versions and servicing levels use different builds. Historical examples include 6.6.7601.17713 and later 10.0.x builds, but these are not a complete current inventory and should not be used as a download target.
If both expected system copies are absent, return to DISM and SFC. Do not copy a file from another computer or Windows installation.
Fix 4: Repair the affected program
If only one game or application fails, the application may have lost a private file, filter, configuration file, or dependency. This is especially likely with an old 32-bit title.

For a game or application installed through a launcher:
- Open the launcher.
- Open the library or installed-games list.
- Select the affected title.
- Look for Verify, Verify files, Repair, or a similarly named option.
- Start the verification.
- Allow the launcher to replace missing or damaged files.
- Restart the launcher and test the program.
The exact wording varies by vendor. Use the launcher’s own repair facility rather than downloading quartz.dll separately.
Use Windows app repair where available
For a Microsoft Store or compatible Windows application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data or settings.
Reinstall from the official source
If the program has no verification or repair option:
- Back up saved games, projects, presets, and other personal application data.
- Uninstall the affected program through Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application’s official publisher or use the original trusted installer.
- Install the application again.
- Test it before adding optional codec packs, filters, mods, or plugins.
Do not place a Windows copy of quartz.dll into the application directory unless the application’s publisher specifically documents a private version. A system DLL from a different Windows build can have incompatible dependencies or exports.
Fix 5: Check Windows media features
Some older media applications depend on optional Windows media features rather than a missing standalone DLL.
Install Media Feature Pack on Windows N
Windows 10 and Windows 11 N editions omit certain media technologies.

- Search for Windows Media Player Legacy.
- Select it and choose Next, then Install.
- Restart Windows.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose Add a feature.
- Select Windows Media Player.
- Choose Install.
- Restart Windows.
You can also refresh Windows media features through Control Panel:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Expand Media Features.
- Clear the applicable media feature check box and select OK.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the same dialog again.
- Re-enable the feature.
- Restart and test.
Microsoft’s Windows Media Player troubleshooting guidance covers these optional-feature steps.
Fix 6: Check codec and DirectShow filter conflicts
A codec pack or third-party media filter can interfere with an otherwise valid DirectShow installation. This is more likely when the problem began after installing or removing a codec pack, when only one video format causes the crash, or when a video editor fails while importing media.
Try this sequence:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Sort the list by installation date if available.
- Look for recently installed codec packs, media filters, capture components, or video utilities.
- Uninstall the suspected package.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the affected program and restore its default media or playback settings.
- Test with a different media file.
If the application has its own codec or plugin manager, disable recently added components there instead of changing Windows files.
A DirectShow filter registration problem is different from a missing quartz.dll. Reinstalling the application or the specific filter package is usually more appropriate than reinstalling DirectShow itself.
Fix 7: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application cannot simply load a 64-bit DLL as its equivalent module. A 64-bit application likewise requires the 64-bit version of its dependencies.
Signs of an architecture problem include:
- Only an old 32-bit game or editor fails
- The error says the module is invalid or not designed to run on Windows
- A program works after installing a different edition of its runtime or plugin
- The application was copied from another computer instead of installed
Try these steps:
- Check the application publisher’s system requirements.
- Use the application’s official x86 or x64 installer as appropriate.
- If the program includes separate 32-bit and 64-bit plugins, install the version matching the application.
- Do not replace the file in
System32with the file fromSysWOW64, or the other way around. - If you manually copied the application folder, uninstall it and perform a complete installation.
Windows’ file redirection and WOW64 compatibility layers can make folder inspection confusing. The application’s architecture, not the folder name alone, determines which component it needs.
Fix 8: Check antivirus quarantine safely
If quartz.dll disappeared immediately after a security scan, inspect the detection before restoring anything.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Find the detection involving
quartz.dll. - Check the full file path and detection details.
- Confirm whether the path is a normal Windows system directory or the affected application’s installation directory.
- Run a full scan before making a restore decision.
Do not restore a file merely because a program is missing it. A file with the right name can still be malicious, modified, or located in an unsafe directory. If Defender identifies a legitimate, digitally signed Windows file, verify its path and status first, then repair Windows with DISM and SFC where possible.

A file named quartz.dll outside the normal Windows or application directories should be treated separately and scanned. The filename alone does not prove authenticity.
Fix 9: Update drivers when the problem is a crash
If the program starts but crashes while playing, importing, previewing, or capturing media, quartz.dll may only be the module where the failure surfaced.
Update or reinstall:
- The affected application
- The application’s codec or filter package
- The graphics driver
- The audio driver
- Capture-device drivers, if applicable
To check drivers through Windows:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device and select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Repeat for Sound, video and game controllers.
- Expand Cameras, Imaging devices, or another relevant category if the program captures video.
- Restart Windows and test again.
For a clean application diagnosis, also try another media file. If only one file causes the crash, the file or its encoding may be involved. If only one codec or format fails, remove or repair the corresponding filter.

Microsoft has documented historical DirectShow crashes involving repeated loading and unloading of the quartz.dll component. That history reinforces an important point: a crash report naming quartz.dll does not prove that the Windows file itself is corrupt. Update the application and related drivers, then inspect its crash logs.
Do not use these as the first fix
Do not download a random DLL
Avoid DLL archive sites and files sent through forums or unofficial installers. The download may be malicious, mismatched with your Windows servicing level, built for the wrong architecture, or missing related dependencies. It can also interfere with Windows servicing and signature validation.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, official Windows installation media, or the application’s official installer instead.
Do not install Visual C++ or .NET without a matching error
Visual C++ Redistributables and .NET support particular applications. They are not the normal source of Windows’ DirectShow core component. Install them only when the application separately reports a missing Visual C++ or .NET dependency.
Do not assume DirectX will repair quartz.dll
Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime installs older side-by-side components such as D3DX, XAudio 2.7, XInput 1.3, XACT, and Managed DirectX 1.1. It does not update the core DirectX runtime included with Windows and is not a general quartz.dll repair package.
Use it only when the application separately reports a missing legacy DirectX component.
Do not run regsvr32 blindly
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide the DllRegisterServer entry point. It is not a general missing-file or corruption repair tool.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not begin with:
regsvr32 quartz.dll
If the file is missing, registration cannot recreate it. If a codec or filter class is missing, registering the DirectShow core runtime may not register the missing third-party component. A vendor may provide a registration script for a specific legacy filter or application, but follow that vendor’s instructions rather than guessing between 32-bit and 64-bit regsvr32.
Microsoft describes the tool in its regsvr32 reference.

FAQ
Is quartz.dll a Windows file?
Usually, yes. It is part of Microsoft’s DirectShow runtime and normally comes from Windows. An old application may also ship or expect a private copy, so one failing program does not automatically mean Windows is damaged.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Should I download quartz.dll?
No. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, official Windows repair media, or the affected application’s official installer. Random replacements can be malicious, incompatible, or the wrong architecture.
Is quartz.dll part of DirectX?
It is associated with DirectShow, not a general DirectX End-User Runtime installation. The legacy DirectX package does not serve as the default repair for this Windows component.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Usually not. Visual C++ Redistributables are separate runtime libraries. Install one only if the application reports a matching Visual C++ dependency error.
Why does the file exist but Windows still say it is missing?
The loader may be reporting a missing dependency, an inaccessible path, an architecture mismatch, or an application-local conflict. Check the exact program, its architecture, and its installation rather than copying another DLL.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I register quartz.dll?
Not as a routine repair. regsvr32 is for DLL registration, not for restoring a missing or corrupted system component. Use it only when an application vendor specifically requires it for a separate registration procedure.
What if only one game or editor fails?
Verify or repair that application, then reinstall it from its official source if necessary. Check its codecs, plugins, and 32-bit or 64-bit requirements. A system-wide Windows repair may not fix a private application file.
What if several media applications fail?
Check Windows Update, then run DISM followed by SFC. On Windows N, check the Media Feature Pack. Also inspect Windows Media Player Legacy and antivirus Protection History.
What if quartz.dll appears as the faulting module in Event Viewer?
That indicates DirectShow was involved, not that the DLL is definitely corrupt. Update the application, codecs, graphics and audio drivers, and test with another media file before attempting system-file replacement.
