fxsxp32.dll is a Microsoft Windows file, not a general-purpose runtime or game DLL. When fxsxp32.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the problem usually involves Windows Fax and Scan, Fax Services, a damaged Windows component, or a missing dependency.
Use this guide in order. The safest repair is to restore the Windows feature or let Windows repair its own protected files rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, note:
- Which program shows the error: Windows Fax and Scan, Office Internet Fax, a fax printer, or another application
- When it appears: during startup, when sending a fax, after Windows Update, or after security software acted
- Whether fax features are installed
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the message says the file is missing or says that a specified module could not be found
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because fxsxp32.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because fxsxp32.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading fxsxp32.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “fxsxp32.dll could not be loaded.”
- “fxsxp32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Cannot register fxsxp32.dll.”
These are commonly reported Windows-style messages, not an official Microsoft error catalog.
What is fxsxp32.dll?
fxsxp32.dll is identified as Microsoft Fax Transport Provider, published by Microsoft Corporation. It belongs to the Windows fax subsystem and is associated with Microsoft Fax Server, Windows Fax and Scan, fax printer functionality, and related fax-provider components.

Microsoft documents the Fax Service Provider architecture, but does not publish a consumer reference page describing every internal export or loading path of this particular DLL. It should therefore be treated as a Windows component, not as a separately downloadable runtime package.
The file is 32-bit. On 64-bit Windows, the expected location is generally:
%windir%SysWOW64fxsxp32.dll
On 32-bit Windows, the corresponding system directory is normally:
%windir%System32fxsxp32.dll
This naming is counterintuitive: on 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Microsoft explains this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.

Fix 1: Install pending Windows updates and restart
A pending update can leave Windows components in an incomplete state. Start with the least invasive repair.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not insist on an immediate restart.
- Open the program that produced the error again.
On Windows 10, open Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update and select Check for updates.
If the error remains, continue to the feature check rather than downloading fxsxp32.dll.

Windows 11
On some Windows 11 installations, the feature is managed through Optional Features:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose View features.
- Search for
fax. - Select Windows Fax and Scan.
- Select Next, then Install.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
The feature can vary by Windows edition, build, policy, and Features-on-Demand source. If it does not appear, that alone does not prove that fxsxp32.dll is malicious or that a DLL download is required.
After installation, open Windows Fax and Scan from the Start menu and check whether the error has disappeared. If the application is available but still fails, continue with system repair.
Windows Server
On Windows Server, install the Fax Server role rather than copying a client DLL:
- Open Server Manager.
- Select Manage → Add Roles and Features.
- Choose Role-based or feature-based installation.
- Select the target server.
- Under Server Roles, select Fax Server.
- Add the required supporting features.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart if requested.
Microsoft says the Fax Server role installs the Fax service, Fax Service Manager, Windows Fax and Scan, and the fax printer. See Microsoft’s Fax Server installation guide.
Fix 3: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use this when the feature is installed, the file was deleted or corrupted, or Windows reports that it cannot load the component.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files against that repair source. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Run:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Windows Fax and Scan or the application that displayed the error.
Do not close the window while either scan is running. SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupted files, found no integrity violations, or found files it could not repair.
When Windows repairs the component successfully, Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of repeatedly hunting through system reports and guessing what changed: its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and DISM and SFC remain the Microsoft-supported path.
If SFC specifically identifies the file and does not repair it, run a targeted scan. On 64-bit Windows, use:
sfc /scanfile=%windir%SysWOW64fxsxp32.dll
On 32-bit Windows, use the corresponding System32 path:

sfc /scanfile=%windir%System32fxsxp32.dll
Microsoft documents /scanfile, /verifyfile, and offline repair options in its SFC command reference.
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found
Windows Update may not be providing a usable repair source. An administrator can use a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with a legitimate repair source. The source must match the installed Windows edition, language, and build closely enough to be valid. After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
Then restart.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
If fxsxp32.dll disappeared immediately after an antivirus detection or cleanup event, check whether Microsoft Defender quarantined it.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any entry associated with the fax component.
- Confirm the file path, detection details, and signature information before taking action.
Do not blindly restore a quarantined file or create an exclusion. Restore it only after confirming that it is the genuine Microsoft-signed system file and that the computer is clean. Microsoft explains this workflow in Protection history in Windows Security.
If Defender repeatedly detects the file, investigate malware, tampering, and the file’s digital signature instead of repeatedly restoring it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix 5: Verify the file path, architecture, and signature
Do not copy a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit component location. Do not assume that every file named fxsxp32.dll is interchangeable.
To inspect the file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%windir%SysWOW64in the address bar on 64-bit Windows, or%windir%System32on 32-bit Windows. - Locate
fxsxp32.dll. - Right-click it and choose Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Check that the description identifies Microsoft Fax Transport Provider.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Inspect the signer and signature status.
Public inventories identify the original filename as FXSXP32.DLL, the company as Microsoft Corporation, and the machine type as 32-bit. Historical inventories contain versions from several Windows generations, but they are not a complete current Microsoft version list and should not be used as download instructions.
If the file is in the wrong directory, do not manually move it. Run DISM and SFC so Windows servicing can restore the correct file for the installed build.
Fix 6: Repair the fax printer and related drivers
If the DLL error appears while printing or sending a fax, the related printer or fax driver may also be damaged.

- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device and reinstall the supported fax printer.
You can also inspect the device state:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Other devices.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver or Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows and reinstall the driver through Windows or the device vendor’s approved package.
Do not expect a driver update to replace fxsxp32.dll; it addresses a related device or print path.
When identifying a stale driver manually means comparing many hardware packages and repeating the process after each Windows update, Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers it identifies; the full version performs the driver installation. It is optional, and the correct fax feature or Windows repair remains the direct fix for this DLL.
Fix 7: Do not use Regsvr32 routinely
A missing-DLL guide often recommends:
regsvr32 fxsxp32.dll
That is not an appropriate first-line repair here. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. A Windows fax provider is not documented as a self-registering DLL.
Running the command may produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found,” or it may change nothing. It does not restore a missing Windows feature, repair the component store, install the Fax service, or fix a missing dependency. Microsoft explains this limitation in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.
Why “specified module could not be found” can be misleading
The message:
Error loading fxsxp32.dll. The specified module could not be found.
does not always mean that fxsxp32.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load one of its dependencies.
This is why copying a replacement file into an application directory often fails. The actual problem may be:
- A missing Windows Fax feature
- A damaged Windows component
- A missing supporting system file
- A broken fax or printer configuration
- An architecture mismatch
- Security software interference
Repair the Windows feature and component store before trying to identify individual dependencies.

Avoid DLL download archives and “one-click DLL fixer” pages. A downloaded copy may have:
Recommended Free Tools
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong architecture
- The wrong language or servicing metadata
- A modified or malicious payload
- An invalid or missing Microsoft signature
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can also leave the Windows service, registry configuration, fax printer, and dependencies unresolved. Windows Resource Protection restricts direct replacement of protected files; Microsoft describes this in its Windows Resource Protection documentation.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows Optional Features, the Fax Server role, DISM and SFC, System Restore, or a Windows repair installation.
Fix 8: Use recovery options if the error began after an update
If the problem began immediately after a Windows update and DISM plus SFC did not help:

- On Windows 10, open Settings → Update & Security → Recovery.
- Review the available recovery options.
- If available, use the option to uninstall the recent update or start System Restore.
System Restore can roll back system files and settings without normally affecting personal files. It is not available in every configuration and requires a suitable restore point. See Microsoft’s Recovery options in Windows and System Restore guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 9: Escalate to an in-place repair
If the fax feature is installed, the file remains damaged, and DISM cannot repair the component store, an in-place Windows repair may be appropriate. This reinstalls Windows system components while normally preserving personal files and installed applications, depending on the selected repair method.
Before starting:
- Back up important files.
- Confirm the Windows edition and architecture.
- Disconnect unnecessary external devices.
- Use installation media that matches the installed Windows version closely.
- Follow Microsoft’s current recovery instructions.
If the issue affects multiple Windows components, the repair installation is more appropriate than replacing one DLL manually.
Frequently asked questions
Is fxsxp32.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. It is identified as Microsoft Fax Transport Provider and belongs to the Windows fax subsystem. Verify the path, file details, and Microsoft digital signature on the installed copy.
Is fxsxp32.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No verified evidence links it to those redistributable packages. Do not install them solely because this filename appears.
Should I put fxsxp32.dll in System32?
Not manually. The file is 32-bit, and on 64-bit Windows the expected 32-bit system location is normally SysWOW64. Let Windows servicing place the correct file.
Why is fxsxp32.dll missing when I do not use fax?
Windows Fax and Scan or Fax Services may not be installed. Check Optional Features or Windows Features first. The DLL may not be present until the related feature is enabled.
Can I register fxsxp32.dll with Regsvr32?
Not as a routine fix. A fax provider is not documented as a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL, so registration may fail or accomplish nothing.
Does this file belong to a particular game?
There is no reliable evidence tying fxsxp32.dll to a specific game. If a different application reports it, that application may be invoking the Windows fax stack or reporting a missing dependency. Check the complete error and repair Windows before assuming the application needs a private copy.
What if SFC says it cannot repair the file?
Run DISM again, confirm the Windows feature is installed, check Defender Protection History, and review:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
If the component store remains damaged, use a matching repair source, System Restore, or an in-place Windows repair.
What is the safest fix?
Install the required Windows Fax feature if it is absent. If it is already installed, run DISM followed by SFC, restart, and test again. This restores the correct architecture and build without trusting an unknown DLL download.
