msador15.dll Is Missing: Trace the Caller and Repair ADO Safely

msador15.dll is a genuine Microsoft Data Access Components file, and its precise role is the ADO Recordset Object used by older data-access software. If msador15.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the application or Windows component that owns it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

The safest repair depends on what is reporting the error. An old database program, Access project, Visual Basic application, or installer may carry its own ADO dependency. In other cases, Windows system files or an Access/VBA reference are damaged. Follow the fixes below in order.

What msador15.dll does

Microsoft’s ADO documentation describes ActiveX Data Objects as a COM-based data-access technology that works through OLE DB. ADO includes several related components, including ADO, ADOX, ADO MD, and Remote Data Services.

The name is easy to confuse with msado15.dll:

  • msado15.dll is the main ADO Library.
  • msador15.dll is the ADO Recordset Object.
  • msader15.dll is associated with ADO error strings.
  • msadrh15.dll is a rowset helper component.

Microsoft’s redistribution documentation lists msador15.dll as “ADO Recordset Object.” It is part of Microsoft Data Access Components, historically called MDAC and later Windows Data Access Components, or Windows DAC. See Microsoft’s ADO reference and component redistribution table.

  • Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)

This does not mean every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation has the same file in the same location. Older Microsoft documentation and security records show ADO files under a Common Files path, not automatically under System32 or SysWOW64.

Error messages you may see

The wording helps identify whether the problem is a missing file, a bad load, or a broken application reference:

  • “The program can’t start because msador15.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “This application has failed to start because msador15.dll was not found.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because msador15.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading msador15.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “msador15.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • Access or VBA: “Your Microsoft Office Access database or project contains a missing or broken reference to the file ‘msador15.dll’ version 6.0.”

“Specified module could not be found” can be misleading. It may mean the named file is absent, but it can also indicate that a dependency required by the DLL is missing or incompatible.

Before changing anything: identify the caller

Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes

First determine which program requests msador15.dll.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Write down the complete error message.
  2. Note the application name shown in the title bar or immediately before the error.
  3. If the error appears during startup, check which program launches at that time.
  4. If it appears after opening a database, identify the Access file or database application.
  5. If it appears during installation, note the installer and the software being installed.
  6. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  7. Select Details and look for the program that was running when the error appeared.
  8. Right-click the relevant process and choose Open file location when available.

Do not assume the file belongs to Windows simply because the error appears in a Windows dialog. An old application may be looking for a private copy or an ADO component supplied by its original installer.

Also check whether the problem began after:

  • Uninstalling or reinstalling an application
  • Restoring an old Access or Visual Basic 6 project
  • A Windows update or software installation
  • Antivirus quarantine
  • Disk cleanup or system migration
  • Moving an application to another computer

These clues determine which repair is most likely to work.

Fix 1: repair or reinstall the application that reports the error

Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes

This is the most likely fix when one older program fails while other applications work normally.

For a Microsoft Store application

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find the affected application.
  4. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  5. Choose Advanced options.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Test the application.
  8. If the error remains, return to the same screen and select Reset, if available.

Reset may remove application settings or local data, so back up important databases first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a conventional desktop application

  1. Save the application’s documents and database files.
  2. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find the program.
  4. Select its three-dot menu.
  5. Choose Modify, Change, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
  6. Choose Repair when available.
  7. Restart Windows and test the program.

If there is no repair option, download or run the application’s original installer from the software publisher. Choose the same architecture and edition where the installer offers that choice. For a game or launcher-managed application, use the launcher’s official Verify, Repair, or Scan files command.

If reinstalling the application restores the file and the program opens normally, the repair is complete. If the installer again reports a missing dependency, the application may be too old for the current Windows release or may require an additional component from its original vendor.

Do not install MDAC merely because the filename contains “ADO.” The correct fix may be the application’s own dependency package.

Fix 2: repair an Access or VBA broken reference

Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes

An Access database can retain a reference to a particular ADO library even when a compatible Microsoft component is installed. In this situation, copying a DLL may not solve anything because the failure is in the project reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make a backup copy of the Access database before changing references.

  1. Open the database while holding Shift if necessary to bypass startup macros.
  2. Press Alt+F11 to open the Visual Basic Editor.
  3. Select Tools > References.
  4. Look for an entry beginning with MISSING:.
  5. Clear the checkbox for a reference that is genuinely obsolete only if you know the project does not use it.
  6. If the required ADO library is installed but not selected, choose the correct Microsoft ADO reference from the available list.
  7. Select Debug > Compile.
  8. Resolve any compile error before testing the database.
  9. Close Access and reopen the database normally.

The exact reference names vary by Office and Windows version. Do not blindly substitute an unrelated library or select the newest-looking entry. A project may depend on a specific interface.

If the correct ADO reference is not listed, repair Microsoft Office and then repeat the reference check:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
  3. Select the three-dot menu.
  4. Choose Modify.
  5. Try Quick Repair first.
  6. If it does not help, use Online Repair, if available.
  7. Restart Windows and test the database.

If only one old database fails, its stored reference or code is more likely to be the problem than a universal Windows DLL failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: check the expected ADO location and architecture

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

Older Microsoft documentation places ADO files in a path similar to:

C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemado

On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit copy commonly appears under:

C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesSystemado

A native 64-bit copy may exist under the non-(x86) path. These are historical documented locations, not a promise that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 build contains the same file or path.

To check:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Paste each path into the address bar.
  3. Look for msador15.dll.
  4. Right-click any matching file and select Properties.
  5. Check the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
  6. Use the Details tab to record the file description and version information.

Do not copy a file from one Windows release into another. Microsoft security records list different historical x86 and x64 builds, so the highest version number is not automatically the correct one for your computer. Microsoft’s historical file information demonstrates why architecture and operating-system context matter.

A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows may need the x86 ADO component. A 64-bit application cannot use a 32-bit DLL simply because the filename matches. Windows loads DLLs according to the application architecture and search context. Microsoft explains these rules in its documentation on DLL search order.

If the file exists but the application still fails, record its path and determine whether the failing program is 32-bit or 64-bit. Repair or reinstall the application with the matching installer instead of replacing the file manually.

Fix 4: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes

Use this step when multiple Microsoft components are failing, the file appears to belong to Windows, or the issue began after system corruption. These tools cannot reliably repair a DLL that belongs only to a third-party application.

First install pending Windows updates:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart if requested.
  6. Return to Windows Update and check again.

Then run DISM before SFC:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter and wait for it to finish.
  2. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  3. After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Open the affected program again.

Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance recommends DISM before SFC. SFC checks protected Windows files and attempts to repair corruption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Possible results include:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows protected files were not detected as corrupted.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the application.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC again. If it still fails, review Windows recovery options.
  • DISM cannot find source files: Windows may need a matching installation source. Microsoft documents using /Source and /LimitAccess with suitable installation media in its SFC and DISM repair instructions.

Manually repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. I recommend Outbyte PC Repair when you want a scan that shows what it found before you decide whether to repair; the free scan identifies issues, while repair features require the full version, and it is not required when application reinstall is the definitive fix.

Fix 5: check antivirus quarantine and security history

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

If the file disappeared immediately after an antivirus scan, inspect the security history before downloading anything.

For Microsoft Defender:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security > Windows Security.
  3. Choose Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Look for a recent detection involving msador15.dll.
  6. Record the detection name, original path, and action taken.

Do not restore the file automatically. Restore it only when the file came from the expected Microsoft or application installation path, has a valid Microsoft or trusted-vendor signature, and the detection is clearly a false positive. Otherwise, reinstall the application from its trusted installer and run a complete security scan.

Antivirus quarantine is a possible explanation, not proof that it caused this particular error. A missing dependency, failed update, or incomplete uninstall can produce the same message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: use System Restore after a recent change

Time needed: 20 to 45 minutes

Use System Restore when the failure started immediately after an update, driver installation, system change, or software installation and a restore point exists.

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs.
  5. Review the applications and drivers that will be affected.
  6. Select Close, then Next.
  7. Confirm the restore.
  8. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs while leaving personal files untouched. It does not replace a backup, and it may remove a recently installed application. Test the affected program after Windows starts.

Fix 7: check drivers only when the error points to a driver or hardware change

Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes

A driver is not the normal owner of msador15.dll. Do not update every driver as a first response. Use Device Manager when the error began after a hardware change, a storage-controller problem, or a driver installation and other symptoms support that diagnosis.

  7. Record the provider, date, and version.
  8. Use Update Driver only when Windows or the hardware manufacturer provides a suitable package.
  9. If the issue began immediately after an update, select Roll Back Driver when available.
  10. Restart Windows and test the application.

Hunting through many driver versions can obscure the actual cause. I recommend Outbyte Driver Updater when you need a scan that identifies stale drivers before you choose what to install; the scan shows the findings, while driver installation features require the full version, and it is not a substitute for repairing the application that requested msador15.dll.

Should you run regsvr32 msador15.dll?

Usually, no.

regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It works only with DLLs that expose the registration entry point expected by regsvr32. ADO components were installed and registered as part of MDAC or Windows setup, but a standalone regsvr32 msador15.dll procedure is not a verified general repair for this file.

Running the command against the wrong architecture can produce another error, change registration, or create the impression that the file is fixed when the real problem is a missing dependency or broken application reference. Microsoft explains common regsvr32 limitations in its DLLRegisterServer troubleshooting documentation.

Repair the owning application, Office, or Windows component instead.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Do not download msador15.dll from a DLL index or file-sharing site and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That approach can fail because:

  • The downloaded file may contain malware.
  • It may have the wrong architecture.
  • It may be from a different Windows release.
  • Its version may not match related ADO components.
  • It may lack a valid Microsoft signature.
  • The actual missing item may be a dependent DLL.
  • The application may still have a broken Access/VBA reference.
  • Copying it may hide the original installation problem.

The official MDAC 2.8 SDK is a developer kit containing headers, libraries, type libraries, documentation, and tools. It is not a normal end-user repair package. Microsoft also documents MDAC 2.8 SP1 as limited to Windows 2000, so do not install it as a generic Windows 10 or Windows 11 fix. Windows Vista and later used Windows DAC components serviced through Windows and its repair mechanisms rather than a generally supported standalone MDAC download. See Microsoft’s Windows DAC and MDAC FAQ, MDAC redistribution guidance, and MDAC SDK page.

Common causes and the matching repair

Likely cause Best first repair
Incomplete application installation Repair or reinstall the requesting application
Old Access or VBA reference Back up the database and repair Tools > References
Windows component corruption Run DISM, then SFC
Antivirus quarantine Review protection history and reinstall from a trusted source
Wrong 32-bit or 64-bit component Use the application’s matching installer
Recent system or driver change Use System Restore
Obsolete software Check the vendor’s current compatibility guidance or replace the application

If the error remains

Collect this information before seeking further support:

  • The exact error text
  • The application name and version, if shown
  • Your Windows version and system architecture
  • The full path where msador15.dll was found or expected
  • The failing application’s 32-bit or 64-bit status
  • The file’s Properties and Digital Signatures information
  • Antivirus detection and quarantine history
  • DISM and SFC results
  • Whether reinstalling the application changed the error

If the application still fails after its own repair and Windows servicing completes, use Event Viewer, Process Monitor, or the application’s log to identify the actual caller and any dependent DLL. “Specified module could not be found” may identify a dependency rather than msador15.dll itself.

If Windows is broadly damaged and DISM, SFC, and System Restore do not resolve it, use Microsoft’s Windows recovery options. For an old application that cannot run correctly on the current Windows release, the final repair may be application replacement, a supported compatibility arrangement, or a repaired Windows installation rather than another copy of the DLL.

FAQ

Is msador15.dll a Microsoft file?

Yes. It is associated with Microsoft Data Access Components and the ADO Recordset Object. A valid copy should come from Microsoft Windows servicing or the trusted installer for the application that requires it.

Is msador15.dll the same as msado15.dll?

No. msado15.dll is the main ADO Library. msador15.dll is the ADO Recordset Object. Substituting one for the other is not a safe repair.

Does it belong in System32 or SysWOW64?

Usually neither. Older Microsoft documentation places ADO files under Common FilesSystemado. On 64-bit systems, both x86 and native paths may be relevant, but the correct location depends on the application and Windows installation. Do not choose a location based only on the filename.

Is this a Visual C++ runtime problem?

No. msador15.dll is an ADO and MDAC-related component, not a Visual C++ redistributable file. Installing Visual C++ packages is not the normal repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I fix it with regsvr32?

Do not use regsvr32 as the default fix. Repair the owning application, Access or Office reference, or Windows components first.

Is the missing file proof of malware?

No. It is a genuine Microsoft component, but a file can be deleted, quarantined, corrupted, or replaced. Check its path, signature, and antivirus history rather than assuming either malware or safety.

What is the safest first step?

Identify the program showing the error, then repair or reinstall that program from its trusted installer. If multiple Microsoft components fail, run DISM followed by SFC.
