a0004061.dll is a Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications component called Visual Basic for Applications Runtime – Expression Service. If Windows reports that a0004061.dll is missing, not found, damaged, or unable to load, repair the application that requested it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

The file is associated with legacy VBA hosts, Office installations, and other applications that embed Microsoft VBA. It is not established as a normal Windows component that belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

What a0004061.dll is

Microsoft documents a VBA expression service that loads VBA components dynamically through VBAGetExprSrv. That supports the file’s reported VBA expression-service identity, although Microsoft’s documentation does not identify a0004061.dll by basename. See Microsoft’s documentation for VBAGetExprSrv.

Public file catalogs report these details:

Item Reported information
Description Visual Basic for Applications Runtime – Expression Service
Associated product Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications
Publisher Microsoft Corporation
Likely role A legacy VBA runtime or application-private helper
Architecture Catalogs report 32-bit, but this is not confirmed by a current Microsoft file manifest
Alternate name Some catalogs identify it as EXPSRV.DLL
Version and size Catalogs report a version and approximate size, but these values are not definitive

The version, size, alias, and architecture should be treated as catalog metadata rather than an official current Microsoft binary record. No reliable public evidence maps this filename to one particular Office edition, game, or third-party program.

Why the error appears

Windows may display one of these messages:

  • A0004061.dll not found.
  • The file A0004061.dll is missing.
  • Cannot find A0004061.dll.
  • Error loading A0004061.dll. The specified module could not be found.
  • This application failed to start because A0004061.dll was not found.
  • ...a0004061.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.

The full path and the program named in the error are more useful than the filename alone. Write down both before attempting repairs.

A missing-file error commonly follows:

  1. An incomplete or damaged application installation.
  2. An Office or legacy application update.
  3. Antivirus quarantine.
  4. Disk cleanup or migration from an older Windows installation.
  5. Restoring an old application from backup.
  6. An architecture or version mismatch.
  7. A missing dependency required by the application.

Windows searches the application’s executable directory and other locations according to its DLL search order. Microsoft explains this behavior in its documentation about the dynamic-link library search order. That is why copying an arbitrary file into a Windows folder often does not solve the problem.

Fix a0004061.dll errors in the safest order

1. Identify the application that owns the file

Do not begin by searching for the DLL online. First determine which program is requesting it.

If the error appears while launching a program

  1. Close the error message.
  2. Note the application name in the window title or message.
  3. Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
  4. Read the Target field on the Shortcut tab.
  5. Note the executable path and the application’s publisher.
  6. Open Settings with Win+I.
  7. Select Apps and then Installed apps.
  8. Search for the program name.
  9. Record whether it is Microsoft Office, a legacy business application, an installer, a game, or an add-in.

If the message appears when Windows starts, use Task Manager:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for the named program or a recently removed application.
  4. Right-click a matching entry and select Properties or Open file location.
  5. Identify the parent application before disabling anything.

An orphaned startup entry can continue trying to launch a removed VBA-based application. In that case, disable or uninstall the identified parent program instead of placing a0004061.dll in a system folder.

If the error says only “Windows”

Windows is often displaying the loader error, not identifying the owner. Check:

  • The complete error text.
  • The executable path, if shown.
  • The time of the error.
  • Recently installed or removed software.
  • Antivirus protection history.
  • Scheduled tasks and startup entries.

The file is not automatically a Windows system file just because Windows displays the error.

2. Repair Microsoft 365 or Office

If the failing program is Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, an Office add-in, or another VBA-based Office host, repair Office first.

Online Repair for Click-to-Run Office

  1. Save your work and close all Office applications.
  2. Press Win+I.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps.
  5. Find Microsoft 365 or the relevant Office installation.
  6. Select the three-dot button beside it.
  7. Choose Modify.
  8. Allow the Office setup process to start.
  9. Select Online Repair.
  10. Select Repair.
  11. Follow the prompts and restart Windows when requested.
  12. Launch the application that produced the error.

Microsoft describes Online Repair as the more complete repair option in its guide to repairing an Office application.

Online Repair downloads and rebuilds the Office installation. It is more appropriate than copying a single VBA DLL because the error may involve a missing companion file, registry data, or an incomplete Office component.

Repair an MSI-based Office installation

Some older Office installations use Windows Installer rather than Click-to-Run.

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the Office installation.
  5. Select Change.
  6. Choose Repair.
  7. Follow the setup instructions.
  8. Restart Windows and test the affected Office program.

If Office repair fails, uninstall the affected Office installation using Microsoft’s supported removal process, restart, and reinstall Office from the account or installation media that originally supplied it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Repair or reinstall a legacy third-party application

For an older application, the application installer is the correct source for its VBA files.

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Select the application that produces the error.
  3. If Advanced options is available, open it.
  4. Select Repair and wait for it to finish.
  5. Test the application.
  6. If no repair option exists or the error remains, select Uninstall.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Reinstall the program from its original vendor media or the vendor’s official download.
  9. Launch the program again.

If the program stores its own files beside the executable, reinstalling it restores the expected application directory and the correct related components. Do not assume that a Microsoft VBA file can be copied between unrelated programs.

For a game, use the launcher’s built-in Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files command. If verification cannot restore the component, reinstall the game through its official launcher. There is no reliable public evidence that a0004061.dll belongs to one particular game.

4. Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Security software can remove or quarantine a damaged, changed, or incorrectly detected application file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Expand detections from the time the error began.
  5. Check the original path and the detected file name.
  6. Confirm that the path belongs to the trusted application you are repairing.
  7. If the file came from an intact official installer, follow Microsoft Defender’s available restore or allow instructions.
  8. Reinstall or repair the application after handling the detection.
  9. Run a full scan before launching the program again.

Microsoft explains quarantine and restoration in its guide to Protection History.

Do not restore a DLL merely because its name matches the error. A file from an unknown download site is not made trustworthy by being named a0004061.dll. If Defender continues detecting the file, leave it quarantined and obtain a clean copy through the application’s official installer.

5. Check architecture and application compatibility

Catalogs commonly report a0004061.dll as a 32-bit file, but that detail is not confirmed by a current Microsoft binary record. A 32-bit application needs its 32-bit VBA component even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

The important distinction is:

  • 64-bit Windows can run many 32-bit applications.
  • A 32-bit DLL cannot be made 64-bit by copying it into System32.
  • System32 and SysWOW64 serve different Windows loader roles on 64-bit Windows.
  • Copying the same unverified DLL into both directories can damage troubleshooting and still leave the application unable to load it.

To check an application’s process architecture:

  1. Start the affected application if possible.
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  3. Select Details.
  4. Right-click a column heading.
  5. Select Select columns.
  6. Enable Platform if Windows offers that column.
  7. Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.

On some Windows versions, 32-bit processes appear with a *32 suffix. If the application is old, install the correct build of that application rather than trying to substitute a DLL from a different architecture.

A “not designed to run on Windows” message can indicate corruption, an incompatible binary, or a damaged dependency. It does not prove that the file is a Windows component.

6. Repair missing dependencies

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that a0004061.dll itself is absent. The file may exist while one of the DLLs it depends on is missing.

Use this order:

  1. Confirm the application’s installation directory.
  2. Run its repair option.
  3. Reinstall the application from official media.
  4. Install updates offered by the application’s vendor.
  5. Contact the vendor if the application still reports a dependency failure.

Do not install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET solely because a DLL error occurred. a0004061.dll is identified as VBA-related, not as a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime DLL. Install one of those runtimes only when the error or the application documentation specifically identifies it as required.

7. Check Windows components with DISM and SFC

Windows component corruption is less likely for this particular file because the evidence points to an application-private or legacy VBA component. Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself is malfunctioning, several protected system files are failing, or Windows reports system-file corruption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open an elevated terminal:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the original application.

Microsoft recommends running DISM and SFC in this order. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, restart and test again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the process after DISM completes successfully, then repair or reinstall the owning application.

Repeating SFC will not reconstruct an application-private VBA file that was removed from an application directory.

If you want a guided way to identify damaged Windows components rather than repeatedly hunting through repair output, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is completed by the full version. It is optional, and repairing the specific Office or legacy application remains the definitive fix when that program owns the file.

8. Update Windows and relevant application components

Windows Update is not a substitute for reinstalling a legacy application, but it can resolve operating-system compatibility problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Win+I.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart when prompted.
  6. Open Windows Update again and select Advanced options.
  7. Select Optional updates if available.
  8. Review driver updates carefully.
  9. Install only updates that match your hardware and restart.

For application updates, use the application’s own update command or the vendor’s official installer. Do not use a generic DLL download as an update mechanism.

Update a driver only when the error identifies hardware software

a0004061.dll is not identified as a graphics, audio, chipset, or printer driver file. Device Manager is therefore not the first repair path. Use it only if the error also points to a device, failed driver installation, or hardware-related application.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
  8. If the problem began after an update, open Properties → Driver and review Roll Back Driver, when available.

For a more direct way to identify stale or mismatched hardware drivers instead of checking each device manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan the system and show the affected versions; its free scan identifies drivers, while installation is completed by the full version. It is optional, and it will not replace the application repair required when a VBA program owns a0004061.dll.

9. Use System Restore after a known recent change

System Restore is a fallback when the error began immediately after a driver, application, or system change and a suitable restore point exists.

What not to do

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Do not download a standalone DLL from a random site

A separately downloaded DLL may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, be an incompatible version, or be missing companion files. It can also conceal the real cause, such as an incomplete Office installation or antivirus quarantine.

There is no current official Microsoft download page offering a0004061.dll as a standalone supported replacement. Microsoft does publish legacy VBA updates, including the VBA Update Q822150 and the VBA security update KB974945, but these are legacy updates and are not confirmed direct replacements for this exact file.

Use the original application installer, Office repair, or official vendor media instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy the file into both Windows folders

Putting a 32-bit file in both System32 and SysWOW64 does not make it compatible with every application. It may also cause the loader to select an unintended copy. Microsoft’s DLL search-order documentation explains why the application directory and loader context matter.

Do not run regsvr32 by default

regsvr32 is appropriate for a DLL that provides a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents that requirement in its explanation of implementing DllRegisterServer.

A VBA runtime or helper DLL does not necessarily export that function. Running commands such as these is therefore not a general repair:

regsvr32 a0004061.dll
regsvr32 /u a0004061.dll

If the command reports that the entry point was not found, it has not repaired the application. Use the application’s repair or reinstall process instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not enable unrelated Windows Features

Enabling .NET Framework, legacy DirectPlay, or other Windows Features will not normally restore a VBA expression-service DLL.

Only check Windows Features when the error or the application documentation explicitly names a required feature:

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter:
optionalfeatures
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Review the requested feature.
  3. Enable only the feature the application requires.
  4. Select OK.
  5. Restart if Windows asks.

Do not use Windows Features as a substitute for repairing Office or a legacy program.

If the error remains

Capture the following information before contacting the application vendor:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  • The complete error message.
  • The full path shown for a0004061.dll.
  • The name and version of the failing application.
  • Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Your Windows edition and architecture.
  • The date the error began.
  • Any recent update, reinstall, cleanup, migration, or antivirus detection.
  • The result of Office or application repair.
  • The result of DISM and SFC.

The full path usually reveals ownership. A path inside an Office directory points toward Office repair. A path beside an older program executable points toward that program’s installer. A path in a removed application’s directory may indicate an orphaned startup entry.

FAQ

Is a0004061.dll legitimate?

Yes. It has a meaningful VBA expression-service identity and is associated with Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications. That does not mean every copy found online is safe or authentic.

Is a0004061.dll part of Windows?

It is not established as a normal Windows System32 component. Treat it as a VBA or application component unless the full path and the owning software prove otherwise.

Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

Public catalogs report 32-bit, but that has not been verified against a current Microsoft binary record. The application’s architecture matters more than Windows’ architecture. A 32-bit host needs the matching 32-bit component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not based on this filename alone. Those runtimes are unrelated unless the application reports an additional missing dependency from one of them.

Can I fix it with regsvr32?

Usually no. Use regsvr32 only when the DLL’s documentation specifically requires registration and the file exports the required registration entry point.

What if the error appears at startup?

Find the startup entry, scheduled task, add-in, or recently removed application that launches at startup. Disable or repair that parent application rather than copying the DLL into Windows directories.

What is the most likely fix?

Repair or reinstall the application that names a0004061.dll. For Microsoft 365 or Office, use Online Repair. For a legacy third-party program, use its original vendor installer or installation media.
