Errors caused by dsp_wt.dll
You may see messages such as:
- “This application failed to start because dsp_wt.dll was not found.”
- “The file dsp_wt.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading dsp_wt.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because dsp_wt.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Failed to load dsp_wt.dll.”
- “Cannot find dsp_wt.dll.”
dsp_wt.dll is a legacy 32-bit Winamp DSP/effect plugin from WOWThing for Winamp, an SRS Labs audio-enhancement product. If it is missing, the safest fix is to repair the Winamp-compatible player or restore the complete trusted plugin package, not to copy a random DLL into Windows.
The 60-second answer
- Identify which application displays the error. It is usually Winamp or another player that supports Winamp DSP plugins.
- Close the player.
- Check the player’s plugin directory, commonly:
text
C:Program Files (x86)WinampPlugins
- If you still need SRS WOW effects, restore the complete WOWThing plugin package from a known-good backup or trustworthy original archive.
- If you no longer use the effect, disable the stale plugin reference or move
dsp_wt.dllout of the plugin directory. - In Winamp, open Options → Preferences → Plug-ins → DSP/Effect and check whether the plugin is listed.
- Do not put the file in
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not run
regsvr32against it. Winamp DSP plugins are loaded by Winamp’s plugin system rather than registered as ordinary Windows components.
The important distinction is whether the plugin is genuinely needed or whether an old configuration entry is merely looking for a file you intentionally removed.
What dsp_wt.dll actually is
dsp_wt.dll is identified as a “Winamp plugin” belonging to WOWThing for Winamp and associated with SRS Labs, Inc. Its job is to process audio through the player’s DSP chain, providing the old SRS WOW-style enhancement rather than supplying a Windows-wide audio function.
That makes it an application file, not a Windows component. It is not:

- A Microsoft runtime
- A Windows driver
- A DirectX system file
- A .NET component
- A standard audio driver
- A file that belongs in a Windows system directory
Public file listings describe it as a Win32 or 32-bit plugin. Those listings also report old version and size information, but that metadata is not a current official SRS release record. Treat the file as legacy software and verify any copy before restoring it.
A 64-bit edition of Windows can run a 32-bit Winamp plugin when the host player is 32-bit. The relevant architecture is the architecture of the application loading the plugin, not simply whether Windows itself is 64-bit.
Why Windows reports the file as missing
The plugin was deleted
An uninstall tool, cleanup utility, manual cleanup, or antivirus product may have removed the file while leaving Winamp’s plugin entry behind. Winamp then tries to load the configured DSP module and produces the error.
The player was moved or upgraded
The plugin may still exist, but the host application may now be installed in a different directory. A portable Winamp installation can also retain a plugin path from another computer or drive.
Recommended Free Tools
Winamp allows its DSP plugin directory to be configured. The folder shown in the error may therefore differ from the usual Program Files (x86) location.
Antivirus quarantined the old plugin
Legacy audio plugins can be flagged because they are old, uncommon, unsigned, packed, or bundled with outdated installers. A quarantine event does not prove that the file is malicious, and a filename alone does not prove that it is safe.
A dependent module is missing
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that dsp_wt.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named file but failed to load one of its dependencies.
Reinstalling the complete original plugin package is safer than downloading individual runtime DLLs. There is no verified evidence that this plugin requires a particular current Visual C++ package or DirectX redistributable.
The plugin is obsolete
WOWThing is a very old plugin. If the player no longer needs it, restoring the file only to satisfy an obsolete configuration entry is unnecessary. Removing or disabling the reference is the cleaner repair.
Fix 1: Identify the application requesting the file
Before changing anything, find out which process is loading dsp_wt.dll.
Check the error window
Read the title bar and the sentence immediately around the error. If it appears while launching Winamp, the host is clear. If it appears when opening another player, that program may support Winamp-compatible DSP plugins.
Check Task Manager
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Processes.
- Start the application that triggers the message.
- Note the application name that appears.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location if that option is available.
- Record whether the program is installed under
Program FilesorProgram Files (x86).
If the message appears at Windows startup rather than when opening an audio player:

- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an old Winamp, WOWThing, SRS, or audio-enhancement entry.
- Disable the entry temporarily.
- Restart Windows and check whether the message returns.
You can also inspect Event Viewer:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs → Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the time the dialog appeared.
- Check the Faulting application name and Faulting module name fields.
If no player or startup entry refers to the file, do not assume Windows needs it. A stale shortcut, scheduled task, or third-party launcher may be responsible.
Fix 2: Repair or restore the complete plugin
This is the most likely solution when you still want the WOWThing effect.
First, close the host application
Exit Winamp or the compatible player. Open Task Manager, search for the player under Processes, and choose End task if it remains open.
Find the configured plugin directory
For a typical Winamp installation:
C:Program Files (x86)WinampPlugins
Other possible locations include the player’s own Plugins folder or a custom directory selected during installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIn Winamp:
- Open Winamp.
- Choose Options → Preferences.
- Select Plug-ins.
- Open DSP/Effect.
- Review the available DSP plugins.
- Note which plugin is selected and where the player is installed.
If Winamp will not open because of the error, browse to the installation directory manually and look for a Plugins folder.
Restore the original package
Use one of these sources, in this order:
- A known-good backup from the same computer.
- The original installer or archive you already trust.
- A trustworthy archive of the complete application package, after scanning it and checking its contents.
There is no verified current official SRS Labs download page for WOWThing. Do not treat a page offering only a loose copy of dsp_wt.dll as an official source.
If you restore the plugin, restore the complete package rather than only one DLL. An installer or archive may contain supporting files that the DSP module expects.
Copy the restored plugin into the host player’s configured DSP directory. Do not copy it into either Windows system directory.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Start the player and return to Options → Preferences → Plug-ins → DSP/Effect. Select the WOWThing or SRS-related entry if it appears.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The player starts without the missing-file dialog.
- The DSP plugin appears in the DSP/Effect list.
- Selecting it does not produce a second dependency error.
- Audio plays normally with the effect enabled.
If the plugin appears but fails to load, move it out of the directory again. That points to a missing dependency or incompatibility rather than a simple missing-file problem.
Fix 3: Remove a stale WOWThing reference
If you no longer use SRS effects, removing the obsolete plugin is usually better than hunting for an old copy.
- Close Winamp or the compatible player.
- Open the player’s plugin directory.
- Create a folder named
Disabled plugins. - Move
dsp_wt.dllinto that folder if it exists. - Start the player.
- Open Preferences → Plug-ins → DSP/Effect.
- Select None, another working DSP plugin, or disable the WOWThing entry.
- Restart the player.
If the application starts normally after the move, the plugin or its configuration was responsible.

Do not delete the file immediately if you are troubleshooting. Moving it preserves a rollback path. Once you confirm that no application needs it, you can remove the disabled copy.
If the error appears at startup, check Task Manager → Startup apps and Task Scheduler for a leftover WOWThing or SRS entry. In Task Scheduler, review tasks under Task Scheduler Library, but do not disable unrelated Windows tasks.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security may have removed the plugin while leaving Winamp configured to load it.
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Choose Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand entries recorded when the plugin disappeared.
- Review the detected path, detection name, and original file location.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- You know which trusted package supplied it.
- The path matches the player’s plugin directory.
- The file has not been obtained from an arbitrary DLL download page.
- You have scanned the complete package.
- You accept that Defender may detect it again because it is old or uncommon.
Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined file can result in another detection. An explicit Allow on device action may be required, depending on the protection event and current Windows Security interface.
If the source is uncertain, do not restore the file. Remove the stale plugin reference or reinstall the host application from a source you trust.
Fix 5: Reinstall the host player
If Winamp or another compatible player was partially removed, its plugin directory may be incomplete.
- Back up playlists, skins, and personal settings if you still need them.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find Winamp or the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the player again from an installer you trust.
- Open its DSP settings and check whether the error remains.
If the original WOWThing package is not included, reinstalling Winamp alone may not restore the effect. In that case, either restore the complete plugin package separately or leave the effect disabled.
If the error remains after reinstalling the host, temporarily move every third-party DSP plugin out of the plugin directory. Start the player with an empty or clean plugin folder, then add plugins back one at a time. This identifies whether another plugin is causing a load-chain failure.
Fix 6: Check for a dependency or architecture mismatch
A 32-bit dsp_wt.dll must be loaded by a compatible 32-bit host. Installing a 64-bit audio player does not make a 32-bit Winamp plugin compatible.
Check the host application:
- Open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click the column headings.
- Choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
- Compare the application architecture with the plugin package.
If the platform column is unavailable, the installation path can provide a clue, but it is not definitive. A 32-bit program commonly resides under C:Program Files (x86).
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because the word “DLL” appears in the error. Microsoft’s legacy DirectX runtime is intended for older games using components such as D3DX, XAudio 2.7, and XInput. That does not establish a requirement for this Winamp plugin.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall an audio driver only when the symptoms point there
A standard audio-driver problem does not normally create a missing dsp_wt.dll message. Driver work is appropriate when you also have no sound, a missing audio device, crackling across every application, or a warning icon in Device Manager.
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- If the device still fails, return to the same menu and choose Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows and let Windows reinstall the device, or install the driver supplied by the computer or motherboard manufacturer.
Do not expect a driver update to restore a missing application plugin. The definitive repair for dsp_wt.dll remains restoring, disabling, or removing the WOWThing plugin.
Manually checking every audio, chipset, and motherboard driver can involve hunting versions and guessing which package is actually stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show the driver issues; its full version performs the driver installation, but it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the Winamp plugin.

Fix 8: Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption
System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and Management repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party Winamp plugin.
Use them when other Windows files are also failing, Windows features are damaged, or several unrelated applications report system-component errors.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
text
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application again.
DISM should run before SFC because SFC can use the repaired component store as its source. If both commands report that Windows is healthy but dsp_wt.dll is still missing, that result is expected. Restore or remove the application plugin instead.
Recommended Free Tools
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed is not useful. Outbyte PC Repair can scan and identify Windows repair issues; the full version performs the repair, but it is optional, and it cannot substitute for restoring the original WOWThing package.
Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore may help if the error began immediately after an uninstall, cleanup operation, driver installation, or other software change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
text
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if available.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Click Scan for affected programs.
- Review the applications and drivers that will be changed.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert system settings, installed programs, and drivers without normally removing personal files. It is not a guaranteed way to recover a third-party plugin, and it may restore an old configuration that still needs cleanup.
Why System32, SysWOW64, and regsvr32 are wrong fixes
Do not copy the file into System32
C:WindowsSystem32 is not a general-purpose storage folder for application plugins. On 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64 is also part of Windows’ system component layout, not a normal destination for Winamp extensions.
Putting dsp_wt.dll there can create confusing load behavior, leave duplicate copies behind, and make future troubleshooting harder. Restore it to the host player’s configured DSP directory.
Do not use regsvr32
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly for COM or ActiveX components. Winamp DSP plugins are discovered and loaded through Winamp’s plugin system.

Running commands such as these is therefore generally inappropriate:
regsvr32 dsp_wt.dll
regsvr32 C:PathTodsp_wt.dll
A registration failure does not repair a missing Winamp plugin. It only adds another error to diagnose.
Avoid loose DLL downloads
Random DLL download pages can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a file that still lacks its dependencies. Even a clean-looking copy may not match the original plugin package.
Use a known-good backup or a complete trusted application archive. Scan the package, inspect its location, and restore it only to the player’s plugin directory.
FAQ
Is dsp_wt.dll part of Windows?
No. Available evidence identifies it as a third-party Winamp DSP/effect plugin from WOWThing for Winamp and associated with SRS Labs, Inc.
Is dsp_wt.dll safe?
The filename alone cannot prove that a particular copy is safe. A genuine copy belongs with the trusted WOWThing plugin package and should be scanned and checked before restoration. Do not assume every file using this name is authentic.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which program is asking for dsp_wt.dll?
Usually Winamp or another Winamp-compatible audio player. Check the error dialog, Task Manager, Event Viewer, startup entries, and scheduled tasks if the requesting program is not obvious.
Should I download dsp_wt.dll separately?
No. Restore the complete original plugin package from a known-good backup or trustworthy archive. There is no verified current official SRS Labs download page for this legacy plugin.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not automatically. A DLL error does not prove that a runtime is missing. Reinstalling the complete plugin package is the appropriate first response. Install a runtime only when a separate installer or dependency diagnostic identifies it.
Will SFC or DISM restore the file?
Normally no. They repair protected Windows components, while dsp_wt.dll belongs to a third-party application.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can a 32-bit plugin run on 64-bit Windows?
Yes, when it is loaded by a compatible 32-bit host. The host application architecture matters more than the overall Windows architecture.
What if the message says “specified module could not be found”?
That wording can mean either that dsp_wt.dll is absent or that a dependency of the plugin is absent. Reinstall the complete trusted package, then test the plugin in a clean DSP directory.
What if I do not use Winamp anymore?
Move the plugin out of the old plugin directory, disable the stale startup or configuration entry, and uninstall the unused host application. You do not need to restore an obsolete audio effect simply to silence an old reference.
Does this file belong in System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Those are Windows system directories. A Winamp DSP plugin belongs in the host player’s configured plugin directory, commonly under the 32-bit Winamp installation.
