bssdk.dll Errors: Find the Bluetooth Owner and Repair It

By VGSources Team 12 min read

If bssdk.dll is missing, the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the BlueSoleil or OEM Bluetooth package that installed it. bssdk.dll is not a standard Windows file, so downloading a replacement and copying it into System32 is usually the wrong repair.

What this file actually does

bssdk.dll, also written as BsSDK.dll, is a third-party Bluetooth application component. Its description is “Bluetooth Application”, and it belongs to BlueSoleil, Bluetooth software developed by IVT Corporation.

BlueSoleil was bundled with some Bluetooth USB adapters and OEM computers. Depending on the hardware, an OEM package may also use Ralink branding or contain a different BlueSoleil build. That does not mean every copy of the file is Ralink software.

The file provides part of the BlueSoleil Bluetooth SDK and runtime. It is normally loaded by the Bluetooth software that owns it, rather than by Windows itself. The executable most commonly associated with the startup error is BtTray.exe, the Bluetooth tray component.

A documented error appears like this:

BtTray.exe – System Error
The program can’t start because BsSDK.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

Historical metadata identifies a 32-bit bssdk.dll build as version 5.4.305.0, with a size of approximately 0.25 MB. Other installations contain different versions and sizes, so those details are not a universal fingerprint.

Causes matched to symptoms

Symptom Most likely cause Correct response
The error appears immediately after signing in A damaged BlueSoleil installation or orphaned BtTray.exe startup entry Repair or reinstall the Bluetooth package, or disable its startup entry if it is no longer needed
Bluetooth stopped working at the same time A missing or replaced OEM Bluetooth package or driver Reinstall the manufacturer’s Bluetooth package and check Device Manager
The error began after antivirus detection bssdk.dll may have been quarantined Check Protection history before restoring or reinstalling
The error began after an update or recovery process The Bluetooth stack may have been replaced or partially removed Install the correct OEM or adapter package
“Not designed to run on Windows” appears Wrong architecture, mismatched version, corruption, or a missing dependency Reinstall the complete matching package
Bluetooth still works but the popup remains An obsolete startup entry may still launch BtTray.exe Remove the old package or disable the startup item
Copying a DLL did not help The application needs companion files, services, registry entries, or the correct build Undo the manual copy and reinstall the owning package

Fix 1: Identify the program requesting bssdk.dll

Start by confirming which application is asking for the file. The dialog title usually identifies it.

  1. Read the title bar of the error. If it says BtTray.exe, the request is coming from the Bluetooth tray component.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps in Windows 11. On Windows 10, open Apps & features.
  5. Search for:
  6. BlueSoleil
  7. Ralink Bluetooth Stack
  8. Bluetooth software from the computer manufacturer
  9. Bluetooth software from the adapter manufacturer
  10. If several Bluetooth packages are installed, note their names before changing anything.

You can also check startup programs:

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Task Manager.
  3. Select Startup apps.
  4. Look for BlueSoleil, Bluetooth Tray, BtTray.exe, or an unknown entry pointing to an old Bluetooth installation.
  5. Right-click the entry and select Properties if available.
  6. Check the file location and publisher information.

Do not delete a startup entry yet if Bluetooth depends on that package. First determine whether you still use the associated Bluetooth adapter or software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Repair BlueSoleil or the OEM Bluetooth package

Repair is the least disruptive approach when Windows still lists the software.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find BlueSoleil, Ralink Bluetooth Stack, or the relevant OEM Bluetooth package.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if that option is available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Try opening the application or signing in again.

Some traditional desktop installers do not provide an Advanced options or Repair button. In that case:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Programs and Features.
  4. Select the Bluetooth package.
  5. Look for Repair, Change, or Modify.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.
  7. Restart the computer.

How to tell whether repair worked

Repair worked if the BtTray.exe popup no longer appears and the Bluetooth application opens normally. Also check whether the Bluetooth icon and adapter functions behave as expected.

If repair finishes but the same error returns, the installation is probably incomplete or the installed package does not match the adapter. Continue with a full uninstall and reinstall.

Fix 3: Uninstall and reinstall the complete Bluetooth package

A complete reinstall is the most reliable fix for a damaged or incomplete BlueSoleil installation. It restores the DLL together with the executable, companion libraries, services, registry entries, and the appropriate architecture.

  • SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Not compatible with all other operation systems e.g. Mac, Linux, Chrome, Unix, Playstation(PS), Windows 7 and below; Disable any built-in Bluetooth of the device before use this product, refer to the user manual for detail

Before uninstalling, obtain the correct package from one of these safe sources:

  • The computer manufacturer’s support page
  • The Bluetooth adapter manufacturer’s support page
  • Original installation media
  • The vendor’s official support channel

A current official IVT download containing a standalone bssdk.dll should not be assumed to exist. Do not substitute a DLL-index or file-download site for the manufacturer’s installer.

Remove the old package

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the BlueSoleil or OEM Bluetooth package.
  5. Select the three-dot menu.
  6. Select Uninstall.
  7. Confirm the removal.
  8. Restart Windows, even if the uninstaller does not request it.

If the package is listed only in Control Panel:

  1. Press Windows key.
  2. Type Control Panel.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Programs.
  5. Select Programs and Features.
  6. Select the Bluetooth package.
  7. Select Uninstall or Change.
  8. Complete the wizard and restart.

Install the matching package

  1. Download the Bluetooth package for the exact computer or adapter model from its manufacturer.
  2. Check whether the package is intended for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
  3. If the download is an archive, extract it to a new folder.
  4. Right-click the installer.
  5. Select Run as administrator.
  6. Complete the installation.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Test Bluetooth and the program that previously displayed the error.

If the manufacturer provides multiple Bluetooth packages, do not choose solely by the name of the DLL. Match the package to the computer model, adapter model, and Windows version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Remove an orphaned BtTray.exe startup entry

Sometimes BlueSoleil has already been removed or replaced, but Windows continues trying to start its tray program. In that situation, restoring bssdk.dll only hides an obsolete startup problem.

First confirm that you no longer need the old Bluetooth stack. If your adapter requires BlueSoleil, reinstall the correct package instead.

Disable the startup item

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Task Manager.
  3. Select Startup apps.
  4. Find BlueSoleil, Bluetooth Tray, or BtTray.exe.
  5. Right-click it.
  6. Select Disable.
  7. Restart Windows.

If the popup disappears and Bluetooth continues working through another stack, the old entry was orphaned.

Remove the related application

If the old software remains installed:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the obsolete Bluetooth program.
  3. Select the three-dot menu.
  4. Select Uninstall.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Check Task Manager > Startup apps again.

Do not disable a Bluetooth startup component blindly if it controls pairing, adapter services, or vendor-specific features that you still use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an application file. Check this before downloading anything.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Look for bssdk.dll, BlueSoleil, or the related installation folder.
  6. Open the detection details.

Restore the file only when you can verify that it came from a trusted BlueSoleil or OEM installation and the detection is a false positive. If the source is uncertain, leave the file quarantined and reinstall the complete Bluetooth package from the manufacturer.

  • What Can I do if the Bluetooth adapter can not work?: Ensure there are no other Bluetooth devices installed on the computer. If there are, disable all existing Bluetooth devices in "Device Manager", then insert the adapter and try again. (For detailed information please read the user manual)

After reinstalling, run a new scan:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Quick scan.
  4. Wait for the scan to finish.
  5. Review any new detection before launching the Bluetooth software.

A quarantined file should not be replaced with an arbitrary copy from the internet. A clean vendor installer is safer because it restores the related files as a compatible set.

Fix 6: Check architecture and version compatibility

A 32-bit application needs a compatible 32-bit DLL, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Historical BlueSoleil installations include 32-bit builds, while OEM packages may contain different builds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is why copying a file into either of these folders is not a dependable fix:

  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64

The correct location depends on the installer and the application. The folder names also do not mean what many users expect: on 64-bit Windows, System32 is generally associated with 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit components.

Do not mix a file from one BlueSoleil release with another installation without confirmation from the software or hardware vendor. A file can have the correct name and still fail because its version, architecture, or companion files do not match.

If the message says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error,” treat that as generic loader wording. It indicates a compatibility, corruption, architecture, or dependency problem, not proof that bssdk.dll is a Windows component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Check the Bluetooth driver in Device Manager

If Bluetooth itself stopped working, repair the driver package as well as the application.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Bluetooth.
  4. Look for a warning icon, an unknown device, or the adapter named by the manufacturer.
  5. Right-click the adapter.
  6. Select Properties.
  7. Review the General tab for a device status message.
  8. Select the Driver tab and record the provider and version details.
  9. Close the properties window.

Install the correct driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer. Avoid mixing a generic Bluetooth package with a vendor stack that expects BlueSoleil components.

If the adapter is disabled:

  1. Right-click it in Device Manager.
  2. Select Enable device.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Test Bluetooth again.

If the device is present but reports an error:

  1. Right-click the adapter.
  2. Select Uninstall device.
  3. If Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver package, select it only when you have the correct replacement package ready.
  4. Confirm the uninstall.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Run the manufacturer’s Bluetooth installer as administrator.

Manually finding the correct driver can mean comparing hardware models, Windows versions, and package revisions. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues and show what needs attention; its full version performs the driver installation. It is optional, and reinstalling the correct OEM Bluetooth package remains the definitive fix for an application-owned bssdk.dll.

Fix 8: Run DISM and System File Checker only for broader Windows problems

bssdk.dll is not a protected Windows DLL, so System File Checker and DISM will not normally recreate it. Use these commands when Windows has other signs of component corruption, such as damaged built-in features or repeated system errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the Bluetooth application again.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and retest. If it reports that it could not repair some files, read the result and continue with the BlueSoleil or OEM package reinstall rather than repeatedly copying bssdk.dll.

Repeatedly running SFC or DISM without knowing which component changed rarely helps with a third-party application file. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what needs attention; its full version performs the repair. It is optional, and reinstalling BlueSoleil remains the definitive fix when that application owns the missing DLL.

Fix 9: Use System Restore when the failure has a clear beginning

If the error started immediately after installing a driver, application, or update, System Restore may return the system to an earlier working state.

  1. Press Windows key.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Open rstrui.exe.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Review the result.
  8. Select Next, then Finish.
  9. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs. It does not normally change personal files. If no suitable restore point exists, use the manufacturer’s Bluetooth package reinstall instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 10: Test for a third-party startup conflict

A clean boot can show whether another startup component is interfering with Bluetooth software. It does not repair bssdk.dll, so use it as a diagnostic step.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type msconfig.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Open the Services tab.
  5. Select Hide all Microsoft services.
  6. Select Disable all.
  7. Open the Startup tab.
  8. Select Open Task Manager.
  9. Disable enabled third-party startup items.
  10. Close Task Manager.
  11. Select OK in System Configuration.
  12. Restart Windows.
  13. Test the Bluetooth application.

If the error disappears in a clean boot, re-enable services and startup items in groups until the conflicting component is identified. Restore normal startup afterward through System Configuration.

Why standalone DLL downloads and regsvr32 are usually wrong

Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an incorrect version, the wrong architecture, or a file that is incompatible with the rest of the Bluetooth package. Even a genuine-looking copy may not fix the problem because BlueSoleil also relies on its executable, companion libraries, services, and installation settings.

Do not copy bssdk.dll into System32 or SysWOW64 as a routine repair. Use a verified vendor installer, which places the file where its owning application expects it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

regsvr32 is also not a general missing-DLL repair. It registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer; it does not restore a missing file, repair dependencies, or rebuild an incomplete BlueSoleil installation. Running this command against bssdk.dll will usually not solve the startup error. Use it only if the official installer or vendor instructions specifically require it.

There is no Windows Features setting that normally reinstalls BlueSoleil. Turning Windows optional features on or off will not recreate this third-party application DLL.

If the error remains

Identify the exact executable and path still requesting the file.

  • Recheck the dialog title for BtTray.exe or another program.
  • Review Task Manager > Startup apps.
  • Check Event Viewer by right-clicking Start, selecting Event Viewer, and reviewing Windows Logs > Application.
  • Look for multiple Bluetooth stacks from different vendors.
  • Confirm that the installed package matches the Bluetooth adapter.
  • Remove obsolete Bluetooth software that is no longer needed.
  • Repeat the manufacturer package installation only after removing the damaged installation.

If Bluetooth works and only the startup popup remains, removing the obsolete package and disabling its startup entry is preferable to restoring a DLL for software you no longer use.
