epsxecutortool.dll is a legacy application DLL used by ePSXeCutor, a front-end and configuration utility for the ePSXe PlayStation emulator. The file is identified as ePSXeCutorTool Dynamic Link Library and belongs to the ePSXeCutorTool helper component.
It is not a Windows system file, Microsoft runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, graphics driver, or Visual C++ Redistributable DLL. Windows does not normally provide it in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
The safest fix is to restore the complete ePSXeCutor installation. Do not download a loose copy of epsxecutortool.dll, copy it into a Windows folder, or register it automatically. The original DLL may need matching files from the same application package.

1. Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 2–5 minutes
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine an old emulator utility because legacy software can trigger suspicious-file detections. Check quarantine before reinstalling anything.
- Open the Start menu.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Review recent entries involving
epsxecutortool.dll, ePSXeCutor, or the folder containing the emulator utility. - Open a matching entry to see whether the file was quarantined or removed.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are true:
- The ePSXeCutor files came from a trustworthy original distribution.
- You recognize the installation and executable.
- The detection has been checked and is reasonably likely to be a false positive.
Microsoft warns that allowing a genuinely malicious file can put the device at risk. If Defender deleted the file or the source is uncertain, do not retrieve the DLL separately. Reinstall the complete application from a trusted historical distribution instead.
After restoring a quarantined file, start ePSXeCutor from its original folder. If Windows Security quarantines it again, stop restoring it and scan the installation.

Time needed: 10–20 minutes
An incomplete extraction, damaged archive, deleted support file, or broken shortcut is the most likely cause of this error.
The historical P.E.Op.S. site lists ePSXeCutor version 1.0.6.3. Because this is old software and no current official standalone DLL download is available, use the complete program archive from a trustworthy original distribution rather than a DLL-indexing or DLL download sites site.
- Back up ePSXe memory cards, configuration files, save files, and other personal data if they are stored inside the ePSXeCutor folder.
- Open Settings from the Start menu.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for ePSXeCutor.
- Remove it if it appears in the list.
- If it does not appear, close ePSXeCutor and move the old application folder out of the way rather than deleting personal data immediately.
- Obtain the complete original application archive from a trustworthy historical source.
- Extract all files to a normal application folder, such as a folder under your user profile or another location where you have permission to write.
- Do not extract only the executable or only the DLL.
- Open the extracted folder and start the included ePSXeCutor executable there.
- Create a new shortcut only after the program starts successfully.
The repair worked if ePSXeCutor opens without the missing-file dialog and can reach its configuration screen. If the same message appears, confirm that epsxecutortool.dll is physically beside the executable that Windows is starting.
To check the shortcut, right-click it, select Properties, and inspect Target and Start in. A shortcut pointing to an old folder can continue producing the error even after a correct copy has been extracted elsewhere.
3. Do not copy the DLL to System32 or SysWOW64
Time needed: 2 minutes
Do not place epsxecutortool.dll in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A folder belonging to another emulator
- A random directory listed in the system
PATH
Windows normally searches the executable’s directory for private application DLLs. Keeping the DLL beside the ePSXeCutor executable allows the program to load the matching helper files from one installation.

Copying it to a shared Windows folder can hide the real problem, create search-order issues, and cause a different application to load an incompatible file. It also does not repair a missing dependency beside the original DLL.
4. Do not use regsvr32 unless the application specifically requires it
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for self-registering COM or OLE libraries that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
For a normal private application library, registration is usually unnecessary. Running a command such as this is not a safe default repair:
regsvr32 epsxecutortool.dll
If you already tried it and received an error that DllRegisterServer was missing, that usually means the file is not a self-registering COM DLL. It does not mean that the DLL belongs in System32.
The message “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by the named DLL is missing. Microsoft documents this behavior for regsvr32 loading failures. In that situation, registering the visible DLL will not repair the dependency chain.
Use registration only if ePSXeCutor’s own documentation explicitly requires it. No verified evidence indicates that epsxecutortool.dll needs registration.
5. Check whether another dependency is actually missing
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A Windows dialog naming epsxecutortool.dll does not always prove that this file is absent. The DLL may exist, while a library it needs is missing, incompatible, blocked, or corrupted.
Recommended Free Tools
First, record the exact message. Reported variants include:
- “The program can’t start because epsxecutortool.dll was not found.”
- “epsxecutortool.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading epsxecutortool.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “A required component is missing: epsxecutortool.dll.”
- “Cannot register epsxecutortool.dll.”
- “Access violation.”
Then check the application folder:
- Right-click the ePSXeCutor executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab if available.
- Note the executable name and location.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Confirm whether
epsxecutortool.dllis beside the executable. - Confirm that the shortcut points to that same executable.
If the file exists but the program still fails, likely causes include a missing dependency, an incompatible old executable, access restrictions, a damaged configuration, or a corrupted DLL. Do not immediately download another copy.

A reputable dependency-analysis utility can show which imported library cannot be resolved, but use one that examines the original executable and DLL rather than replacing files automatically. If you cannot identify the dependency, reinstalling the complete matching application package remains safer than assembling individual DLLs.
6. Verify the application architecture
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
The historical utility appears to be a legacy 32-bit application, but public records disagree about the architecture of epsxecutortool.dll. One record identifies it as Win32, while another public record labels a related entry as x64. Those records should not be treated as authoritative binary verification.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the DLL included with the matching ePSXeCutor package. Do not combine an x86 file with an unrelated x64 record, or vice versa.
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit applications normally run through Windows-on-Windows 64-bit compatibility. A 32-bit ePSXeCutor installation does not become a 64-bit application merely because Windows is 64-bit.
An architecture-related failure may produce wording such as:
- “This app can’t run on your PC.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly.”
- “The image file is invalid.”
- “Not a valid Win32 application.”
Those messages can also result from corruption or a damaged dependency, so do not attribute them to architecture without examining the original binary and the process that loads it.
7. Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus restart time
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components and protected Windows files. They do not recreate a third-party ePSXeCutor DLL that Windows never shipped.
Use these commands when Windows also shows unrelated corruption, failed system updates, damaged built-in applications, or other system-file errors.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test ePSXeCutor again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. A successful result means Windows component repair completed; it does not prove that epsxecutortool.dll was repaired. If the DLL is still absent, return to the complete ePSXeCutor reinstall.

When repeatedly hunting through Windows repair commands is taking longer than diagnosing the underlying damage, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it finds; repairs require the full version, and reinstalling ePSXeCutor remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →8. Use System Restore only after a recent system change
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
System Restore is appropriate when the file disappeared after a recent installation, antivirus event, system change, or failed software update and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
You can also open Control Panel, select Recovery, and choose Open System Restore.
System Restore rolls back system settings, registry state, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files. It may not restore a loose application file if the file was never included in the restore point. If the problem remains, reinstall ePSXeCutor instead of repeatedly using restore points.
9. Treat driver repair as a separate issue
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
epsxecutortool.dll is not identified as a device driver, graphics driver, or Windows hardware component. Updating a display, chipset, audio, or controller driver is therefore not the expected fix for this particular missing DLL.
Check drivers only when Device Manager shows a separate hardware problem or the error names a driver file.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
For a clean reinstall, right-click the device, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and install the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel when necessary.
If identifying the correct driver across several devices is the manual bottleneck, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; installation through the full version is optional, and it should not replace reinstalling ePSXeCutor for an application-specific DLL error.
10. Scan for tampering or malware
Time needed: 15 minutes to several hours
A missing DLL can result from malware removal or a compromised application directory. Do not restore a suspicious file simply because its name matches the error.

The likely causes are:
| Cause | What it means | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Incomplete installation | The archive was only partly extracted or files were deleted | Extract or reinstall the complete package |
| Antivirus action | Defender quarantined or removed the file | Check Protection history, then restore only a trusted file |
| Broken shortcut | Windows starts an older copy from another folder | Correct the shortcut target and Start in path |
| Architecture mismatch | The executable and DLL do not match | Use files from the same application build |
| Missing dependency | Another library required by the DLL cannot load | Inspect the full error and reinstall the package |
| Corruption or disk trouble | The file or application directory is damaged | Back up data, check the disk, and reinstall |
| Malware or tampering | The file was altered or removed for security reasons | Scan, remove the compromised copy, and reinstall |
There is no verified evidence tying this DLL to Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, Windows Update, or a particular device driver. Installing those components should not be treated as the definitive repair unless a separate error explicitly names one of them.

Safe sources and verification
The safest source is the complete ePSXeCutor archive from its historical author or a trustworthy preservation source that retains the original package. The P.E.Op.S. historical front-end page lists ePSXeCutor, but there is no current authoritative standalone download for epsxecutortool.dll.
Avoid random DLL download sites because a loose replacement can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to another build, or omit dependencies. Public records also report differing version, size, checksum, and architecture details, so those values should not be used to select a replacement file.
After reinstalling:
- Confirm the executable and DLL are in the same application folder.
- Start the executable directly from that folder.
- Check that Windows Security has not quarantined the file.
- Confirm the exact error no longer appears.
- If a new error names another DLL, troubleshoot that dependency separately.
Frequently asked questions
Is epsxecutortool.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with ePSXeCutor and is not a normal Windows, Microsoft runtime, DirectX, .NET, or driver file.
Is ePSXeCutor the same program as ePSXe?
No. ePSXeCutor is a separate front-end and configuration utility for the ePSXe emulator. Restoring ePSXe alone may not restore ePSXeCutor’s helper DLL.
Should I download epsxecutortool.dll by itself?
No. There is no authoritative current standalone DLL download. Restore the complete matching ePSXeCutor package instead.
Should I copy it to System32?
Generally no. Keep the DLL in the application directory beside the executable that uses it.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Generally no. Registration applies to self-registering COM or OLE DLLs. There is no verified evidence that this application helper DLL requires registration.
Why does the error say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
The named DLL may depend on another missing or incompatible library. The wording does not always mean that the named file itself is absent.
Will Visual C++ or DirectX repair it?
There is no verified evidence that this file requires either package. Install a runtime only when a separate error identifies a missing component from that runtime.
Is ePSXeCutor supported on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
No current support documentation was found. It is historical software, so compatibility problems may remain even after the missing DLL is restored.
What if reinstalling does not work?
Record the exact executable path, full dialog text, Windows architecture, whether the DLL exists beside the executable, and whether Windows Security removed it. Then investigate a dependency, compatibility, permissions, configuration, or corruption problem rather than downloading another copy of the same DLL.
