The 60-second answer
ufccomm.dll is a legacy application DLL, not a Windows component and not part of the Microsoft Visual C++ or DirectX runtimes. The strongest evidence connects it with older Ulead software, particularly Ulead GIF Animator 5 and Ulead PhotoImpact, including PhotoImpact 12.

The safest fix is to identify the Ulead program that produced the message and repair or reinstall that complete application from its original installer, CD, or legitimate installation media. Do not download an isolated copy of ufccomm.dll and place it in System32 or SysWOW64.
If antivirus removed the file, check Protection history before reinstalling. If the file exists but the program still will not launch, the message may indicate a missing dependency, damaged installation, permission problem, or compatibility issue rather than a problem with ufccomm.dll alone.
What is ufccomm.dll?
The file is commonly described as UFCCOMM DLL, with the product label UFCCOMM Dynamic Link Library. It appears to be a private 32-bit component used by legacy Ulead applications.
Public file records commonly describe a Win32 copy with a size of about 52 KB and sometimes report version 1.0.0.1. These details are third-party metadata rather than a current official vendor specification, and public records contain conflicting architecture and version claims.
The important distinction is where the file belongs:
- It is associated with an installed application.
- It is not normally a Windows system file.
- It is not supplied by current Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables.
- It should normally sit in the originating program’s installation directory.
- It should not normally be copied to
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64.
Ulead software is now associated with Corel, but the exact publisher and signing status of an individual copy should be checked from a trusted original installation. A file found in an unrelated temporary folder, startup location, or user-profile directory deserves additional scrutiny.
Which programs use ufccomm.dll?
The clearest associations are:
- Ulead GIF Animator 5, including trial editions.
- Ulead PhotoImpact installations, including PhotoImpact 12.
- Potentially other older Ulead products or versions.
That does not prove that every program reporting the file belongs to one of those products. Start with the full error dialog, the shortcut you clicked, and the executable that Windows attempted to launch.
Find the program that needs the file
Before changing Windows folders, identify the parent application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck the error and shortcut
Read the complete dialog. Some messages include the application name or the path of the executable. If the error appeared after clicking a desktop shortcut, right-click that shortcut and choose Properties. The Target field shows which program Windows tried to start.
If the shortcut points to GIF Animator, PhotoImpact, or another Ulead application, repair that program rather than Windows itself.
Search the application folders
Open File Explorer and inspect likely application locations:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Check
C:Program Files (x86). - Look for folders named Ulead Systems, Ulead, GIF Animator, or PhotoImpact.
- Open the suspected program folder.
- Search within it for
ufccomm.dll.
A 64-bit Windows installation commonly stores older 32-bit applications under C:Program Files (x86). That does not mean the application needs a 64-bit version of this DLL. Many 64-bit Windows versions can run 32-bit programs through their compatibility subsystem.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the Ulead application
This is the most likely and most reliable fix.
Try the application’s repair option
Some older installers provide a repair mode.
- Close the Ulead application.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the affected Ulead program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the program again from its normal shortcut.
If the application opens without the missing-file message, the repair restored the private DLL or another damaged application file.
Reinstall the complete program
If repair is unavailable or fails, reinstall from the original CD, installer, or legitimate archived installation media.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the affected Ulead application.
- Click Uninstall.
- Restart Windows after the uninstall completes.
- Run the original installer.
- Install the same product and edition as before.
- Apply any official update supplied with that product.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application before restoring custom plugins or old program files.
Reinstalling the complete application is preferable to replacing one DLL because the installer restores the correct collection of private files, registry settings, shortcuts, and dependencies. The DLL should be restored to the application folder, not manually placed in System32.

Fix 2: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine old unsigned files. A historical listing for a PhotoImpact installation records UFCCOMM.dll as unsigned. Unsigned does not automatically mean malicious, but it does mean the file deserves verification before restoration.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review entries matching
ufccomm.dll, the Ulead application, or its installation folder. - Expand an entry to see its original path and detection details.
Only consider Restore if all of the following are true:
- The file came from the original Ulead installation.
- The original program was obtained from legitimate media.
- The path points to the expected application directory.
- You have independently checked the installer and system for unwanted software.
Do not restore a DLL that came from a random download site. If Defender repeatedly quarantines the restored file, stop restoring it. Obtain a clean installer or submit the file through the security vendor’s normal analysis process.
After restoring a legitimate quarantined file, launch the Ulead program. If it immediately fails again, the installation may be damaged or the file may depend on another missing component. Reinstall the application instead of repeatedly restoring the same file.
Fix 3: Check for a moved or incomplete installation
The error can appear after moving a program folder, restoring an old backup, or completing only part of an uninstall.
Check these conditions:
- The application folder still exists.
- The shortcut points to the current executable.
ufccomm.dllis in the same application folder or the location expected by that product.- The program was not copied from another Windows installation without running its installer.
- The account you are using has permission to read the application folder.
To inspect permissions:
- Right-click the Ulead program folder.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Security tab.
- Select your Windows account.
- Confirm that it has permission to read and execute files.
- Do not grant broad permissions to unknown users or replace security settings without understanding the effect.
If the application was restored from a backup, reinstall it using its original setup program. Copying only the old program folder often omits registry entries, shared components, and dependencies.
Fix 4: Address compatibility with Windows 11 or Windows 10
GIF Animator 5 and similar Ulead programs were designed for much older Windows releases. A missing-DLL dialog may be only the first visible symptom of a broader compatibility problem.
Try the built-in troubleshooter:
- Right-click the application executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the program.
You can also right-click the executable and choose Troubleshoot compatibility, then follow the recommendations.
Run the program as administrator only as a diagnostic step:
- Right-click the executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Click Apply and OK.
- Test the application.
If administrator mode fixes the problem, the underlying issue may be permissions or the program’s attempt to write into a protected folder. It is better to correct the application’s data or permissions arrangement than to run every old program with elevated rights permanently.
If the program still fails after a clean reinstall and compatibility testing, use it in an appropriately isolated older Windows environment or replace it with a maintained modern application.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only if other programs are affected
Because ufccomm.dll is associated with an application rather than Windows, system repair is a secondary step. Use it when several unrelated programs show missing or corrupted system-file errors, or when Windows itself is behaving abnormally.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the Ulead application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses as a source. These commands repair Windows components and protected system files. They do not recreate an application-private Ulead DLL that was removed from the program folder.
Repeating SFC without recording what changed makes it difficult to know whether the application was affected. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds; its repair features require the full version, and reinstalling the affected Ulead program remains the definitive fix for this file.
If DISM or SFC reports errors, restart and run the commands again once. Persistent failures should be handled as a Windows repair problem, separately from the Ulead application problem.

A graphics driver is not known to supply ufccomm.dll, so updating a driver is not a direct repair for this missing file. Consider it only if the Ulead application also crashes with display errors, produces corrupted graphics, or fails after a graphics-driver change.
Update through Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a clean reinstall:
- In Device Manager, right-click the display adapter.
- Choose Uninstall device.
- Select the option to remove the driver package only if Windows presents it and you have a replacement driver ready.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the driver from the graphics hardware manufacturer or computer manufacturer.
Avoid changing drivers merely because ufccomm.dll is missing. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the versions involved; its driver installation features require the full version, and a driver change will not replace the Ulead application’s private DLL.
Why Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET usually will not fix this
There is no reliable evidence that installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET normally supplies ufccomm.dll.
Microsoft’s current Visual C++ packages are named vc_redist.x86.exe and vc_redist.x64.exe. They provide Microsoft runtime libraries, not Ulead’s UFCCOMM Dynamic Link Library.

Do not use System32, SysWOW64, or regsvr32 as a shortcut
Do not copy the file into system folders
Do not place ufccomm.dll in both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Those folders contain Windows components and shared libraries. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows normally uses its own application directory and Windows’ compatibility mechanisms. Copying a private application DLL into a system folder can create path conflicts, leave the wrong version behind, and make later troubleshooting harder.
Do not register it blindly
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general DLL repair command.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Running:
regsvr32 ufccomm.dll
will not restore a missing file, repair a damaged Ulead installation, or make an arbitrary DLL compatible. If it reports that the entry point is missing, that usually means the DLL is not a self-registering COM server. Reinstall the parent application instead.
Why random DLL downloads are risky
Standalone DLL download sites can provide:
- The wrong architecture.
- The wrong version.
- A file intended for another application.
- A modified or malicious file.
- A copy that lacks the dependencies the application actually needs.
Even when copying a downloaded DLL removes the first message, the program may fail later with a different error or load an incompatible component. There is no authoritative current standalone download for ufccomm.dll identified here.
Use the original Ulead CD, the application’s legitimate installer, or installation media supplied by the software owner. If the file was quarantined, verify the original installation before restoring it.
If reinstalling did not work
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm that the error names the same Ulead application you just reinstalled.
- Check the application folder for
ufccomm.dll. - Confirm that the shortcut points to the newly installed executable.
- Review Windows Security Protection history.
- Check whether the message says “specified module could not be found.” That wording can mean a dependency of
ufccomm.dllis missing even when the file itself exists. - Test the program from a new local Windows account to rule out a damaged profile.
- Check Event Viewer for application errors:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Review errors recorded at the time of the crash.
- If the file repeatedly disappears, scan the complete system and stop restoring it until the detection is understood.
- If the program remains unusable, use an isolated older Windows environment or replace the unsupported application.
If the file was found outside the expected Ulead directory, especially in a temporary, startup, or user-profile folder, treat it as suspicious rather than automatically restoring it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFrequently asked questions
Is ufccomm.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a protected Windows component. It is associated with legacy Ulead application software.
Is ufccomm.dll part of Visual C++?
No. Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables provide Microsoft runtime libraries. They do not normally provide this Ulead application DLL.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public records identify it as a Win32, or 32-bit, DLL. A conflicting claim about an x64 build should not be treated as proof of a genuine 64-bit variant. A 64-bit Windows system can still run a 32-bit Ulead application.
Should I download ufccomm.dll?
No. Restore it through the original application installer or legitimate installation media. A random standalone copy may be unsafe, incompatible, or incomplete.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I fix the error by running regsvr32?
Usually not. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that support self-registration. It does not repair an incomplete Ulead installation.
Why does the error appear after reinstalling?
The installer may be incomplete, the wrong edition may have been installed, antivirus may have quarantined the file, or the application may have another missing dependency. Check the application folder and Protection history before trying system-wide fixes.
Can System File Checker restore it?
SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It does not normally restore a private DLL belonging to Ulead software. Use it only as a secondary check when other Windows components also show errors.
Is a copy of ufccomm.dll automatically safe if antivirus calls it safe?
No. A single security result does not prove its origin or chain of custody. Verify that the file came from the original Ulead installation and is located in the expected application folder.
