What cuteshell.dll is and why Windows cannot find it
cuteshell.dll is a CuteFTP shell-integration file, not a Windows component. When cuteshell.dll is missing, Windows is usually trying to start CuteFTP, an old shortcut, or a leftover shell-integration entry from a damaged or partially removed CuteFTP installation.
The file is also described as the CuteShell DLL, part of the CuteShell Dynamic Link Library. Historical records associate it with CuteFTP and older software published under GlobalSCAPE, now represented by Globalscape. It should normally sit in CuteFTP’s own installation directory, not in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Quick identification table
| Detail | What is known |
|---|---|
| File name | cuteshell.dll or CuteShell.dll |
| Component | CuteShell Dynamic Link Library |
| Role | CuteFTP Windows Explorer shell integration |
| File category | Third-party application DLL |
| Windows component | No |
| Usual owner | CuteFTP, especially older installations |
| Typical location | CuteFTP’s installation folder |
| Architecture | A documented historical sample is 32-bit |
| Correct replacement | The matching CuteFTP installer, not a random DLL |
| Registration | Do not assume regsvr32 applies |
The exact CuteFTP edition or build cannot be determined from the filename alone. Historical file records also disagree about sizes and other metadata, so file size is not a reliable way to identify a safe copy.
What the error usually means
You may see messages such as:
- “This application failed to start because CuteShell.dll was not found.”
- “The file CuteShell.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading CuteShell.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “CuteShell.dll could not be located.”
- “CuteFTP Shell Integration Module has stopped working.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing. The DLL may genuinely be absent, or Windows may be unable to load one of its dependencies. A shortcut can also point to a CuteFTP installation that was already removed.

- Package includes: cage nuts x 100pcs screws x 100pcs Washers x 100pcs
- Material: Metal Zinc-plated
- Size: M6 x 16

The most common causes are:
- CuteFTP was incompletely installed or updated.
- CuteFTP was uninstalled while a shortcut or shell entry remained.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- The application folder was deleted manually.
- A mismatched DLL was copied from another CuteFTP release.
- The error belongs to another program that happens to request a file with the same name.
- A broader Windows problem is affecting application launches.
Start by identifying the program named in the error. If it names CuteFTP, use the repair path below. If it names a different executable, do not assume that installing CuteFTP will solve the problem.
Fix 1: Repair CuteFTP from Windows
Repair is the safest first step because it restores missing application files without immediately removing the program’s configuration.
Windows 11 and Windows 10 Settings
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps & features.
- Search for CuteFTP.
- Select the three-dot menu beside CuteFTP.
- Choose Advanced options, if Windows provides it.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch CuteFTP again.
The exact repair controls depend on how the desktop application was packaged. If Repair is not available, use the classic Control Panel route.
Control Panel repair
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find CuteFTP in Programs and Features.
- Right-click it.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test CuteFTP.
If the repair completes successfully, CuteFTP should launch without the missing-file message. If the same error appears, the installer may be missing files itself, or the installed version may not match the remaining shortcut.
Fix 2: Reinstall the matching CuteFTP version
If repair is unavailable or fails, reinstall CuteFTP using the official Globalscape installer. Globalscape provides current and historical product downloads through its product-download channel, which matters for older CuteFTP installations.
Do not install a newer edition blindly if you need old Site Manager data or compatibility with an existing workflow. First record the edition and version shown in the error, the old installer, or the application’s remaining files.
Back up CuteFTP data first
Before uninstalling, back up any saved sites, settings, registration information, or Site Manager data that you still need. If CuteFTP still opens intermittently, use its export or backup options. If it does not open, look for the application’s documented personal-data location rather than deleting the entire profile.
Then:
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Select CuteFTP.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Complete the removal process.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the correct official CuteFTP installer.
- Choose Update or Repair if the installer offers that option.
- If no repair option appears, complete a clean installation.
- Restore your backed-up settings only after confirming that CuteFTP launches.
You can also start the classic uninstaller with appwiz.cpl, as described above.

A shortcut may remain after CuteFTP has been removed.
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the message.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Confirm whether it points to an old CuteFTP executable.
- If CuteFTP is no longer wanted, delete the obsolete shortcut.
- Check the desktop, Start menu, Startup folder, and Task Manager startup entries for other CuteFTP references.
To inspect startup entries:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an obsolete CuteFTP entry if the program has been removed.
- Restart Windows.
Do not delete an entry merely because it contains the word “shell.” Confirm that it belongs to the removed CuteFTP installation.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an application DLL. Do not restore the file automatically. First confirm that it came from a genuine CuteFTP installation.
Rank #2
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection that refers to
cuteshell.dll. - Check the original file path.
- Confirm that the path belongs to the installed CuteFTP directory.
- Check the detection name and remediation status.
Restore the file only when you are confident that the original path, product installation, and publisher are legitimate. If Windows Security detects the file again, do not repeatedly restore it.
If the file was found in %TEMP%, a random user-profile folder, a download directory, or an unrelated program’s folder, treat it as unverified. Run a full scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
For persistent or suspicious detections, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same Scan options screen. Save your work first because Windows restarts during the offline scan.
A file named cuteshell.dll outside a genuine CuteFTP installation is not automatically the real CuteShell component. The name alone proves neither authenticity nor safety.
Fix 4: Check the application architecture and version
A documented historical CuteShell sample is a 32-bit PE file. That does not mean every copy of the file has the same metadata, and it does not mean a 64-bit replacement should be downloaded.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit CuteFTP application through Windows compatibility support. The important match is between:
- The CuteFTP executable.
- The CuteShell DLL.
- The edition and release of CuteFTP.
- Any supporting files required by that build.
Do not mix a DLL from one CuteFTP release with an executable from another. If Windows reports that the module is missing even though the file is present, a dependency may be absent or incompatible.
To inspect the executable named in the error:
- Right-click the CuteFTP shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Right-click the executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Record the product name and file version, if present.
Use that information when selecting the official installer. If you cannot identify the original version, reinstalling the closest supported CuteFTP release from Globalscape is safer than inserting an isolated DLL.
Fix 5: Remove an orphaned shell integration entry
CuteFTP can integrate with Windows Explorer. If the main application is removed but an Explorer or startup reference remains, Windows may attempt to load cuteshell.dll after every sign-in or when you right-click a file.
Recommended Free Tools
First remove the obsolete CuteFTP installation or reinstall it using the steps above. Then restart Windows and test whether the message has disappeared.
If the error only appears when opening a particular shortcut, delete that shortcut after confirming its target. If it appears during sign-in, inspect Task Manager → Startup apps for a CuteFTP entry.

Avoid registry cleaners and automated “DLL repair” utilities that delete entries indiscriminately. A stale shell reference can be removed safely only after you have identified the owning application and confirmed that CuteFTP is no longer required.
Fix 6: Check application logs and the exact missing module
“The specified module could not be found” can mean that cuteshell.dll exists but one of its dependencies does not. Reinstalling the parent application is still the preferred fix because the installer restores the complete set of files.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If reinstalling does not help:
- Write down the full error text.
- Note the executable named by the message.
- Check whether the error appears at startup, when launching CuteFTP, or when using Windows Explorer.
- Open Event Viewer by pressing Windows + R, typing
eventvwr.msc, and pressing Enter. - Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the crash.
- Record the application name and faulting module.
- Check CuteFTP’s own log or support information if available.
If the faulting application is not CuteFTP, repair the program that actually owns the executable. A game, utility, or bundled legacy application may have its own repair or file-verification system, but there is no evidence that cuteshell.dll is a game runtime.
Testing the application under a new Windows user profile can also reveal whether the problem is tied to damaged per-user settings. This is a diagnostic step, not a replacement for repairing CuteFTP.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall drivers only when the evidence points there
A graphics, storage, or chipset driver does not normally supply cuteshell.dll. Do not reinstall drivers as the first response to this particular error. Consider a driver check only if the failure began immediately after a hardware change, Windows update, or wider system instability.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the hardware showing problems.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver obtained from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
- Restart Windows and test CuteFTP.
If a device has a warning icon, resolve that device’s driver issue separately. Do not replace cuteshell.dll with a driver package.

Fix 8: Repair Windows components only for broader corruption
Because cuteshell.dll is a third-party application file, System File Checker and DISM will not normally recreate it. Use these commands when Windows itself shows wider symptoms, such as damaged built-in applications, failed updates, or multiple unrelated system errors.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test CuteFTP again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected Windows files against that repaired store. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling CuteFTP.
Repeating these commands without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and inconclusive. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows issues and perform repairs with the full version, while the free scan shows what it finds; for this file, repairing or reinstalling CuteFTP is still the authoritative solution.
Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after an installation, update, driver change, or suspected software conflict.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, and it may not be available if protection was disabled or no restore point exists. Back up important work before proceeding.
What not to do
Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites websites can provide:
- Malware or a tampered binary.
- The wrong CuteFTP release.
- The wrong architecture.
- A file with inconsistent metadata.
- A DLL that does not include the missing dependency.
- A replacement that creates a version conflict.
The safe source is the official CuteFTP installer from Globalscape’s product or replacement-software channel. Let the installer place the matching file in the application directory.

Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64
cuteshell.dll is application-specific. Copying it into a Windows system directory can cause Windows or another application to load the wrong version. It also hides the original installation problem instead of repairing it.

Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL fix
regsvr32 works with DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A normal application DLL does not automatically support that interface.
Do not run:
regsvr32 cuteshell.dll
unless the application’s official documentation specifically instructs you to register that exact file. A registration error does not prove that the DLL is missing, and successful registration would not repair a damaged CuteFTP installation.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
There is no verified Microsoft Visual C++ package, DirectX package, .NET runtime, or Windows Update package known to supply cuteshell.dll. Install a runtime only when the actual error identifies that runtime as missing.
Frequently asked questions
Is cuteshell.dll part of Windows?
No. Available evidence associates it with CuteFTP shell integration. It should not normally be present in the Windows system directories.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Which program installs cuteshell.dll?
Historically, CuteFTP installed it as part of its Windows Explorer shell-integration component. The exact CuteFTP generation cannot be determined from the filename alone.
Is cuteshell.dll malware?
The name alone cannot answer that. A copy inside a legitimate CuteFTP installation may be genuine, while a copy in a temporary or unrelated directory needs verification. Check the path, signature, parent program, antivirus result, and product installation before trusting it.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
A documented historical sample is 32-bit. Use the matching CuteFTP installer rather than assuming that a 64-bit replacement exists.
Can I fix the error by registering the DLL?
Usually no. regsvr32 is for self-registering DLLs, not every application DLL. Repair or reinstall CuteFTP instead.
Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file is visible?
The named DLL may have a missing or incompatible dependency. The message can also come from a different executable than the one you expected. Reinstall the owning application and inspect the exact executable named in the error.
What if I no longer use CuteFTP?
Remove the obsolete CuteFTP shortcut and startup entry after confirming that no current workflow depends on it. If the message continues, identify the executable requesting the file before deleting anything else.
What should I do if reinstalling CuteFTP fails?
Confirm that you used the correct edition and installer, check Windows Security quarantine, inspect the application log and Event Viewer, and verify that the error really names CuteFTP. If the problem remains tied to an older licensed release, contact Globalscape for legacy-version assistance.
