hpzuci01.dll Missing: Restore the HP Printer Package Safely

Length11 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

“hpzuci01.dll could not be found” or “could not be loaded”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

hpzuci01.dll is an HP printer-installation component, not a normal Windows system DLL. The file is associated with the HP Printer Class Installer dll and is most strongly connected with older HP Deskjet setup packages.

The safest repair is not to download the DLL separately. Remove the failed HP software, obtain the package for the exact printer model from HP, or let Windows install a compatible printer driver through Windows Update.

Which fix applies to you

Use this list to choose the shortest route:

  • The error appears while installing an HP printer: remove the incomplete HP package and reinstall the exact model-specific software.
  • The printer is old or the HP installer came from a CD: skip the legacy installer and try Windows’ built-in printer installation.
  • The printer appears in Windows but will not print: remove it, remove its old driver, and add it again.
  • Windows Security quarantined the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
  • The installer fails on a 32-bit, 64-bit, or ARM system: verify your system type and use a matching package or Windows driver.
  • Several Windows components are also failing: run DISM first, then SFC.
  • You found hpzuci01.dll on a DLL download site: do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64.

A historical HP Deskjet manual documents this file being missing during USB printer setup. That case involved Windows 98, multiple connected devices, and an HP installation CD. The manual’s recovery method was to browse to the existing HP setup files, not to download an isolated DLL. Modern Windows may require a newer driver instead.

Fix 1: Reinstall the exact HP printer package

This is the most likely fix when the message appears during printer setup.

  • AWARD-WINNING RELIABILITY – Performance you can count on page after page, and always ready for the high demands of business.

1. Identify the exact printer

Check the label on the printer or its existing Windows entry. Record the complete model name, including suffixes such as “e,” “Plus,” or regional model numbers.

Do not install software for a similar-looking Deskjet, OfficeJet, LaserJet, or Photosmart model. Printer packages are not interchangeable simply because they come from HP.

2. Remove the failed HP software

In Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for HP.
  5. Remove the printer software, HP setup program, and any entry clearly associated with the failed installation.
  6. Restart Windows.

In Windows 10:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Apps & features.
  4. Uninstall the failed HP printer software.
  5. Restart the computer.

Do not remove unrelated HP utilities unless they clearly belong to this printer installation.

3. Download the package from HP

Open HP’s official Software and Driver Downloads page manually through HP’s support site. Search for the exact printer model, select your Windows edition, and choose the available full-feature, full-solution, basic driver, or HP app package.

The package name may vary by printer. HP does not provide a universal download named hpzuci01.dll.

Before running the installer:

  1. Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if the HP instructions request it.
  2. Close other printer utilities.
  3. Temporarily disconnect unnecessary USB devices.
  4. Right-click the HP installer and select Run as administrator.
  5. Follow the prompts.
  6. Reconnect the printer only when the installer requests it.

What success looks like

The installation completes without the missing-file message, and the printer appears under:

Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners

Print a Windows test page:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Select Printers & scanners.
  4. Choose the HP printer.
  5. Open Printer properties.
  6. Select Print Test Page.

If the new HP package still asks for hpzuci01.dll, the installer is probably obsolete, damaged, for the wrong model, or incompatible with your Windows version. Continue with the Windows driver method rather than searching for the DLL itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Install the printer through Windows Update

Modern Windows often installs a compatible driver without the old HP setup program. This may restore printing even when the legacy HP package cannot run.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Select Printers & scanners.
  4. Select Add device.
  5. Wait while Windows searches.
  6. Select the printer when it appears.
  7. Follow the installation prompts.

If the printer is connected by USB, connect it directly to the computer rather than through a hub. For a network printer, ensure the printer and PC are on the same network.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Devices.
  3. Select Printers & scanners.
  4. Select Add a printer or scanner.
  5. Wait for Windows to find the printer.
  6. Select it and choose Add device.

If Windows does not find it, select The printer that I want isn’t listed and follow the manual-add wizard.

Install an available driver through Windows Update

For a printer that appears but has no usable driver:

  2. Select Add device.
  3. Allow the search to finish.
  4. If necessary, choose the manual installation option.
  5. Select the printer manufacturer and model.
  6. Choose Windows Update when offered to retrieve additional driver lists.

Microsoft also documents the legacy driver path:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select View devices and printers.
  3. Select any printer.
  4. Choose Print server properties.
  5. Open the Drivers tab.
  6. Select Add.
  7. Follow the Add Printer Driver Wizard.

What success looks like

The printer is added without invoking the HP legacy installer, and a test page prints. A Microsoft class or IPP driver may provide printing but omit HP-specific features such as scanning integration, ink monitoring, maintenance tools, or advanced settings.

If basic printing works, that is evidence that the hardware and connection are functional. The remaining problem is the old HP package, not a missing Windows system DLL.

You can also use Outbyte Driver Updater when manually hunting through manufacturer packages and stale driver entries becomes impractical; its free scan identifies driver issues, while repair and driver installation require the full version. For this printer, the exact HP package or Windows’ built-in driver remains the definitive source.

Fix 3: Remove the old printer and driver completely

A damaged driver registration can cause Windows to keep launching the same broken installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove the printer

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  3. Select the HP printer.
  4. Select Remove.
  5. Confirm the removal.
  6. Restart Windows.

On Windows 10, use Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners instead.

Remove the old driver

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type:
printui.exe /s /t2
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select the Drivers tab.
  3. Select the HP driver associated with the failed printer.
  4. Select Remove.
  5. Choose Remove driver and driver package if Windows offers that option.
  6. Restart the computer.

If the driver is in use, stop the Print Spooler first:

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type:
services.msc
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Find Print Spooler.
  3. Right-click it and select Stop.
  4. Remove the driver.
  5. Return to Print Spooler and select Start.
  6. Restart Windows.

Add the printer again through Windows settings or run the current HP installer.

What success looks like

The old HP printer entry and its obsolete driver no longer appear, and the next installation starts as a new setup rather than resuming the failed one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security Protection history

Security software can remove or quarantine an installer component. Do not assume that every quarantine event is a false positive, especially if the installer came from an unofficial source.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent events.
  5. Expand any event involving the HP installer or hpzuci01.dll.
  6. Check the file path and detection details.

Only consider restoring or allowing the file when all of these are true:

  • The installer came directly from HP or from trusted Windows installation media.
  • The file is located inside that installer’s extraction folder.
  • The package is for the exact printer model.
  • The security event has been reviewed and confirmed as a false positive.

If the file came from a DLL download site, leave it quarantined and delete the package. Downloading a replacement from a different site does not establish that it is genuine.

After checking Protection history, rerun a clean HP download or use Windows’ printer installation path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Check the Windows architecture and device type

A legacy 32-bit HP installer may not work correctly on 64-bit Windows. Windows on ARM can also have limitations with manufacturer-specific installers.

Check your system type:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Find System type.

You may see an x64-based system, x86-based system, or ARM-based system.

Choose the HP package that matches the installed Windows version and architecture when HP provides that choice. If no compatible HP installer exists, use Windows Update and its printer class driver.

Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit system folder, or a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit application directory. Even a genuine file can fail when the surrounding installer, INF files, dependencies, and architecture do not match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Recreate the USB setup cleanly

The historical HP error involved USB sequencing and multiple connected devices. The same general troubleshooting approach can still help with a legacy installer.

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Disconnect its USB cable.
  3. Disconnect unnecessary USB devices.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Connect the printer directly to a USB port on the computer.
  6. Turn on the printer.
  7. Run the correct HP installer, or add it through Windows settings.

Avoid USB hubs during installation. If the printer has both network and USB connectivity, use the connection method supported by the current HP package.

If Windows detects the printer but the HP installer still reports hpzuci01.dll, stop using that installer and install the printer through Windows Update.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

hpzuci01.dll is not established as a protected Windows file, so SFC is not normally the primary repair. Run these commands when other Windows components are also failing, printer installation fails across multiple models, or Windows reports broader corruption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.

Run DISM first:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to complete. Then run:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows after both commands finish.

How to interpret the result

  • No integrity violations: Windows protected files are not showing corruption.
  • Corrupt files were repaired: restart and retry the printer installation.
  • Some files could not be repaired: run DISM again after checking Windows Update, then rerun SFC.
  • The HP error remains unchanged: repair the HP package or use the Windows printer driver. SFC does not reconstruct an old HP installer.

Repeating SFC without checking which package or driver is being installed will not supply missing HP setup files. Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work by scanning for system issues and showing what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and reinstalling the correct HP package remains the definitive fix for this file.

Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal missing-DLL repair command.

There is no reliable evidence that hpzuci01.dll is intended to be registered with regsvr32. Running this command:

regsvr32 hpzuci01.dll

may produce an error such as:

DllRegisterServer was not found

That result does not prove the file is bad. It usually means the DLL is not a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. Do not mass-register DLLs or place this file in a system directory to make the error disappear.

Why copying the DLL is the wrong fix

Do not copy hpzuci01.dll into:

C:WindowsSystem32

or:

C:WindowsSysWOW64

The file is associated with HP printer setup, not Windows itself. A printer installer also needs its INF files, catalog signatures, executables, dependencies, registry configuration, and model-specific data. Replacing one DLL cannot recreate that package.

Random DLL websites add further problems:

  • The file may contain malware.
  • The file may be for a different HP printer generation.
  • The architecture may be wrong.
  • The file may be modified or unsigned.
  • The missing message may actually refer to a dependency.
  • The installer may remain incompatible with modern Windows.

Use HP’s official model-specific package or Microsoft’s printer installation and Windows Update paths instead.

If the printer is obsolete

Older Deskjet packages may have been designed for Windows versions that modern Windows no longer supports. Current Windows may provide a basic or class driver, but the original HP installer may not run.

Use this order:

  1. Try Settings > Printers & scanners > Add device.
  2. Install an available Windows Update driver.
  3. Check whether the printer’s model-specific HP page provides a current package.
  4. Accept a basic driver if printing is sufficient.
  5. Use a supported legacy computer only when necessary and appropriate for the environment.

Do not assume that a current Windows installation will contain this legacy file. It may use a different driver model and never need hpzuci01.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the problem started after another software change

When the printer worked before a driver installation, Windows update, or software removal, System Restore may help.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select a restore point from before the printer failure.
  3. Review affected programs.
  4. Start the restore.

System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can roll back drivers, system files, registry settings, and installed programs. Afterward, install the correct current printer package rather than restoring the old installer indefinitely.

FAQ

Is hpzuci01.dll a legitimate file?

Yes. HP documentation identifies it as part of HP Deskjet printer installation software. The filename alone does not prove that a copy is genuine, so provenance still matters.

Does hpzuci01.dll belong to Windows?

There is no evidence that it ships as a Windows component. It is associated with particular HP printer packages, especially older Deskjet software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it used by every HP printer?

No. The available evidence points to particular legacy printer installers, not all HP printers.

Where was it installed?

Historical HP documentation gives this path:

C:Program FilesHewlett-Packardhpzglue

That is a historical location, not a guaranteed path for every release.

Should I download the DLL?

No. Download the complete printer package from HP or install the printer through Windows Update.

Should I copy it from another computer?

Not as a general fix. A matching filename does not prove that the file belongs to the same printer generation, package, architecture, or signed installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can SFC restore it?

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not arbitrary HP printer files.

Is this a game error?

The strongest evidence connects hpzuci01.dll to HP printer setup, not games or game middleware. If a game reports this filename, verify the error source carefully before changing the game installation.

What information should I collect if the error remains?

Record the exact printer model, Windows edition and build, system type, installer filename, complete error text, installation stage, connection type, and whether the file exists in the HP installer’s extraction folder. That distinguishes a damaged package from an incompatible legacy installer or a broader Windows problem.

Prevention

Keep the printer’s exact model number with its official support page. Prefer Windows Update or a current HP package over old installation CDs. Before restoring a quarantined file, inspect its source and digital signature. Finally, keep the printer connected directly during setup and remove obsolete HP packages before trying a replacement driver.
