The 60-second answer
msuspint.dll is the Microsoft Universal Search Provider International DLL, a real Microsoft DLL associated with legacy Microsoft Office components. Public file records identify it as a 32-bit file commonly found in an Office language directory, not as a normal Windows component that belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Office installation that originally supplied it. Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website, copy it into system folders, or run regsvr32 merely because the filename ends in .dll.
If the error appeared after removing Office, cleaning an old drive, restoring a backup, migrating to a newer Windows installation, or an antivirus quarantine event, the parent Office installation is the first place to investigate.

What is msuspint.dll?
The file’s documented description is Microsoft Universal Search Provider International DLL. It is associated with Microsoft Universal Search Provider and legacy Microsoft Office software, especially Office 2003-era installations.
A commonly reported Office location is:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOFFICE111033
That path is not universal. OFFICE11 and 1033 identify one historical Office release and language directory, while other records place the file under an Office 10 language directory. The exact folder depends on the Office edition, language, installation method, and Windows architecture.
The available evidence does not establish msuspint.dll as a standard Windows 10 or Windows 11 System32 file. If an application asks for it, Windows is usually being told to load an old Office-related component, or a dependent library is missing.
Is it a Windows file or an Office file?
Treat it as an Office-associated application file, not a general-purpose Windows runtime.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That distinction matters:
- Windows Update is not normally the source of this particular file.
- SFC may not restore an Office-owned copy.
- Copying it into
System32orSysWOW64is not a supported repair. - Repairing the application that originally installed it is more effective than replacing the isolated DLL.
- The correct file may depend on the Office release, language package, and application architecture.
Office 2003 is unsupported, so an old installation may also have compatibility, activation, installer-source, or permissions problems on a modern Windows system.
What usually causes the error?
The most likely causes are:
- A damaged or incomplete Office installation
- Office was partially removed or migrated
- An Office language or resource component was not installed
- Antivirus software quarantined the file
- The application points to an old Office path that no longer exists
- A dependent DLL is missing
- The calling application itself is damaged
- A 32-bit and 64-bit installation mismatch
If the message says “The specified module could not be found,” that does not always mean msuspint.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named file but failed to load one of its dependencies.
First, identify what is actually failing
Before changing Windows files, identify the executable producing the message.
Check when the error appears
Note whether it occurs when you:
- Start Word or another old Office program
- Open a document through an old application
- Launch a non-Office program
- Log in to Windows
- Run a scheduled task or startup entry
- Open a file association
If the error appears only with one old program, repair that program first. If it appears during startup, inspect the startup entry or uninstalled application that is still trying to load an old Office component.
Check the installed Office products
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Office, Microsoft 365, or the affected application.
- Select the entry and look for Modify, Change, or Repair.
For classic Office installations, also open Control Panel:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the Microsoft Office entry.
- Choose Change.
Do not assume that a newer Microsoft 365 installation contains every file from Office 2003. A modern Office installation is not automatically a replacement for an older language or resource component.
Fix 1: Repair the original Office installation
This is the most likely solution when the file was removed or the Office installation is incomplete.

For an Office installation with a modern repair menu
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Office or the affected Microsoft application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify.
- Select the available repair option.
- Restart Windows after the repair completes.
- Launch the program that produced the error.
If the repair offers both a quicker repair and a more complete online repair, start with the less disruptive option. Use the more complete option when the first repair does not restore the application.
For Office 2003-era installations
Office 2003 used a built-in maintenance operation called Detect and Repair:
- Start Word or another Office application if it opens.
- Select Help.
- Choose Detect and Repair.
- Follow the prompts.
- Provide the original Office CD or network installation source if requested.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
If the program will not open, use Control Panel > Programs and Features, select Office, choose Change, and follow the maintenance prompts. The repair may require the original installation media or a network source.
Microsoft describes Office repair and Detect and Repair behavior in its Office repair guidance.
How to tell whether repair worked
The repair is successful when:
- The application starts without the DLL message.
- The old Office feature that triggered the error works normally.
- The expected Office language or resource folder is recreated.
- Event Viewer no longer records the same application error.
If repair asks for media that you do not have, do not substitute a DLL downloaded from the internet. Locate the original authorized Office media, installation source, or product recovery path. If that is impossible, reinstalling a supported Office product or replacing the old application may be safer than trying to rebuild one unsupported component.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove an old DLL if its behavior or age resembles unwanted software. A quarantined file is not automatically safe to restore, so verify its origin first.
Windows Security steps
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
msuspint.dll. - Expand the event and review its original path, detection name, and action.
- Run a full scan before restoring anything.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- The original path is inside the expected Office installation.
- The file belongs to the Office installation you intentionally installed.
- Its digital signature identifies Microsoft Corporation.
- The file passes a current malware scan.
- You are restoring the correct Office component rather than an arbitrary copy.
Microsoft explains quarantine and restore behavior in Protection history in Windows Security. If Defender detects the file again immediately, stop restoring it and repair or reinstall Office from trusted media instead.
Fix 3: Verify the file path and digital signature
If you find a copy of msuspint.dll, do not judge it by the filename alone.

Check the signature
- Right-click
msuspint.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signer.
- Choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
- Check that the signer is Microsoft Corporation.
The absence of a signature alone does not prove malware, particularly for very old software, but an unexpected signer, altered path, or failed signature is a reason not to use the file.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when other Windows files are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or the problem began after broader system corruption. They are useful Windows integrity checks, but they are not a guaranteed way to restore an Office-installed msuspint.dll.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run SFC second
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the affected application.
Microsoft documents these commands in its DISM and SFC troubleshooting guidance and Windows image repair documentation.
If SFC reports that it repaired files but the same Office error remains, that result does not prove the Office installation is fixed. Continue with Office repair or reinstallation.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the missing file belongs to an old Office package. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what it identifies, while the full version performs the repair; it is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the parent Office application remains the definitive fix for an Office-owned DLL.
Fix 5: Install Windows updates
Windows updates are not a substitute for an Office installer, but an outdated or damaged Windows installation can create additional compatibility and servicing problems.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Follow Microsoft’s Windows Update instructions if the update process reports an error.
Fix 6: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If msuspint.dll is reported by a non-Office application, do not assume that Office is the only possible parent. The application may have bundled an old Office component, retained an outdated path, or been damaged during an uninstall.
Use the application’s own repair process:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the application named in the error context.
- Open its menu.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what is available.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the application from its official installer if repair fails.
If the application has a launcher with Verify files, Repair installation, or a similar option, use that before manually replacing DLLs. The exact program requesting the file determines whether an Office repair or the application’s own reinstall is the correct solution.

Fix 7: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Public records identify msuspint.dll as a 32-bit DLL. A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit Office and other 32-bit applications, but the DLL must belong to the correct parent installation.
Do not use System32 and SysWOW64 as generic DLL storage locations. Their names are counterintuitive:
Rank #4
- Compact plug-and-stay design to instantly add storage to your laptop, game console, in-car audio, and more
- Save time with ultra-fast transfer speeds up to 400MB/s (Based on read speed. 1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors. USB 3.0 port required.)
- Transfer a full-length movie to the drive in less than 30 seconds (Based on 1.2GB MPEG-4 video transfer with USB 3.2 Gen 1 or USB 3.0 host device.)
- Get space for your high-resolution photos, videos, and more at a great value with up to 128GB of storage (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
- Password-protect files using a downloadable software (Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 10+ and macOS v10.9+ (Software download required, see Password Protection page on SanDisk site).)
System32commonly contains 64-bit system components on 64-bit Windows.SysWOW64commonly contains 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows.
That does not mean an Office DLL should be copied into either folder. Office applications normally load their own files from their installation directories.
Check the application architecture through its documentation or installer. A 32-bit application should be repaired with its matching 32-bit application files. Do not replace a missing file with a copy from another Office release, language, or architecture just because the filename matches.
Fix 8: Use System Restore only for a clear rollback
System Restore is reasonable when the error began immediately after a known installation, cleanup operation, update, or removal and Windows has a suitable restore point.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore changes system state and registry information. It is not a replacement for the original Office installer and does not guarantee recovery of every application file. Microsoft documents the scope of restore points.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you use regsvr32?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no authoritative evidence that msuspint.dll is a self-registering DLL. Running a command such as this can therefore produce an error:
regsvr32 msuspint.dll
A message stating that DllRegisterServer was not found does not mean the file needs a different copy. It means the DLL is not designed for that registration operation, or the command was aimed at the wrong file.
Microsoft explains the limitation in its regsvr32 and DllRegisterServer documentation. Repair the parent Office installation instead.
Why random DLL downloads are a bad fix
A standalone download can be wrong in several ways:
- It may come from an untrusted source.
- It may contain malware.
- It may be from a different Office release.
- It may use a different language resource set.
- It may have the wrong architecture.
- It may lack a valid Microsoft signature.
- It may depend on other missing DLLs.
- It may hide the underlying damaged Office installation.
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an arbitrary application folder can also create DLL search-path conflicts. Microsoft does not currently provide a verified standalone download page for msuspint.dll.
The safe sources are the original authorized Office installation media, an authorized Microsoft Office installation source, or the affected application’s official installer and repair mechanism.

Do not use Windows Features or Device Manager for this file
Windows Features and Device Manager are useful for optional Windows components and hardware drivers, but neither is a normal installation path for an Office language DLL.

You can still check them when the broader error points elsewhere:
- Open Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off for optional Windows components.
- Open Device Manager only when the failure also involves hardware, a driver, or a device-specific application.
Installing a display, chipset, audio, or storage driver will not normally restore an Office-owned msuspint.dll.
If the same incident also exposed stale hardware drivers, manually identifying the correct model and architecture can take time. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and identify available updates, while the full version performs the installation; it is optional and unrelated to the definitive Office repair.
When the original Office media is unavailable
If you cannot find the original CD, network source, product key, or authorized installer:
- Record the exact application producing the error.
- Check Installed apps for the complete Office product name and language.
- Check whether another user account can launch the application.
- Review the application’s repair or reinstall options.
- Preserve important documents and settings.
- Remove the broken legacy installation only after confirming that you can reinstall or replace it.
- Prefer a supported Office release or a replacement application when the old software cannot be legitimately restored.
Do not rebuild an unsupported Office installation from isolated DLL files. A complete matching installer is safer and more likely to restore the correct registry entries, language resources, dependencies, and application files.
Frequently asked questions
Is msuspint.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
It is not established as a normal current Windows System32 or SysWOW64 component. Available records associate it with legacy Microsoft Office and Microsoft Universal Search Provider.
Which Office version installed it?
Office 2003 is the strongest historical association in public records, including a reported OFFICE111033 path. Another historical listing places it under an Office 10 language directory, so the exact release and language package can vary.

Will SFC restore it?
Not necessarily. SFC repairs protected Windows files. Because msuspint.dll is associated with Office, repairing Office is the more direct fix.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. That is not established as the correct location and can create search-path, architecture, and version problems.
Does regsvr32 repair it?
Normally no. regsvr32 applies to DLLs designed to register themselves. There is no verified evidence that this DLL exports the required registration entry point.

What is the final escalation step?
Confirm which executable requests the file, inspect the expected Office path and digital signature, check Event Viewer for the application error, repair the parent application, and reinstall the matching Office language or component package. If no legitimate installer exists, replace the unsupported Office installation rather than sourcing an isolated DLL.
