Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →hpzrm309.dll is an HP printer-driver component called Printer Property UI dll. If Windows says it is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the safest fix is to remove the damaged HP printer software and install the correct package for your exact printer model.
Do not download this DLL from a random DLL website or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32. That may leave the real driver dependency broken, introduce the wrong architecture, or install a tampered file.
What hpzrm309.dll does
hpzrm309.dll provides part of the HP printer-properties interface. Windows or an HP print driver may load it when you open printer preferences, install an HP device, or start a print-related component.
Available file records identify it as:
| Item | Known information |
|---|---|
| File | hpzrm309.dll |
| Description | Printer Property UI dll |
| Publisher | HP |
| Architecture listed | 32-bit |
| Listed version | 2.240.0.0 |
| Listed size | Approximately 0.3 MB |
This is not a Windows system DLL, Microsoft runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file. It belongs to an HP printer-driver installation. The exact HP printer model and package cannot be determined from the filename alone.

A 32-bit HP driver can use a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows. That does not mean you should manually place the file in either System32 or SysWOW64. Windows chooses the appropriate driver environment when the official HP package is installed.
What the error means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because hpzrm309.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting hpzrm309.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading hpzrm309.dll.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because hpzrm309.dll was not found.”
- “hpzrm309.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not always mean the named file itself is absent. Windows can report “specified module could not be found” when hpzrm309.dll exists but another DLL or dependency that it needs is missing.
Before changing anything, write down:
- The exact error text
- The full path shown in the message
- Your printer model
- Whether you use Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Your Windows version and build
- Any recent Windows updates or driver changes
- Whether antivirus software quarantined a file
That information helps distinguish a missing HP component from a missing dependency.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the complete HP printer package
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is the most likely solution because it restores the DLL, related HP files, driver configuration, registry entries, and the correct architecture together.

1. Disconnect the printer
Turn off the printer and unplug its USB cable if it uses one. If it is connected over Wi-Fi, leave it powered off during the initial removal.
Disconnecting it prevents Windows from immediately reinstalling a stale device entry while you remove the damaged package.
2. Uninstall HP software
On Windows 11:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Search for
HP. - Select the affected HP printer software, HP Smart, or the model-specific package.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Search for the HP printer software.
- Select it and choose Uninstall.
Remove only software associated with the affected printer. Do not remove unrelated HP utilities if you are unsure what they control.
3. Remove the stale printer
- Open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Devices → Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
- Select the affected printer.
- Choose Remove or Remove device.
- Confirm the removal.
You can also check Control Panel → Devices and Printers for an older copy of the printer and remove it there.

4. Restart Windows
Restart before reinstalling. This clears driver handles and gives the print spooler a clean start.
5. Download the correct HP package
Use HP’s official printer driver support page or the official 123.hp.com setup site. Search by the complete printer model, not merely by “HP printer.”
Rank #2
Choose the package that matches:
- The exact printer model
- Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Your system architecture, when HP presents that choice
- The connection method you use
Do not search for hpzrm309.dll as a standalone download. HP does not publish a universal standalone package for this filename, and the DLL may be only one part of an older model-specific driver.
6. Install and reconnect
Run the HP installer. If Windows asks for administrator permission, approve it. Reconnect or power on the printer only when the installer requests it.
When installation completes:
- Open Settings → Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP printer.
- Choose Printer properties or Printing preferences.
- Print a test page.
The repair worked if the HP properties window opens without the hpzrm309.dll message and the test page prints normally.
If the same error returns, record the path named in the message. If it points to an old HP folder, an older package may still be registered and needs to be removed.
Fix 2: Reinstall the printer driver through Windows
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is useful when the HP software is present but the driver registration is damaged.
Remove the device in Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if present, Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Locate the affected HP printer or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click it and choose Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only for the affected HP device.
- Confirm the uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
Do not delete unrelated printer drivers. If several entries have similar names, identify the one matching the model shown in the error or in Windows printer settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAfter restarting, reinstall the official HP package. If HP no longer provides software for the printer, try:
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Allow Windows to search.
- If the printer is not found, choose the option to add it manually.
- Select the appropriate connection and built-in driver when available.
A built-in Windows driver may provide printing without the full HP property interface. That can be a practical solution for an old printer, but it may not restore every HP-specific feature.
When manually removing a stubborn package, administrators can open Print Management by searching for it from Start. Under Print Servers → your computer → Drivers, remove only the driver that belongs to the affected HP printer. Print Management is not included in every Windows edition, so do not treat its absence as an error.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through many driver versions: its free scan shows what it identifies as outdated, while driver installation and repair are handled by the full version. For this file, however, reinstalling the exact HP printer package remains the definitive fix.

A Windows update or major upgrade can disrupt an older HP driver without damaging Windows itself.

- Choose Update history.
- Look for a driver, quality, or feature update installed around the time the printer stopped working.
- Restart Windows if updates are pending.
- Return to Printers & scanners and remove and reinstall the HP printer package.
Windows Update can also offer a newer compatible driver:
- Open Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Open Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates if available.
- Install an HP printer driver only when it clearly matches your printer.
If the printer worked before a major update and fails immediately afterward, HP’s recommended path is generally to remove and reinstall the printer software rather than copy individual files back into Windows folders.
If the printer is no longer supported for your Windows version, try the built-in Windows driver or the last driver package HP officially provides for that model. A legacy printer may need to remain on its supported older Windows environment.

Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software may have removed or quarantined an HP file. Do not immediately restore it merely because the filename appears in the error.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
hpzrm309.dll, an HP installer, or the printer’s installation directory. - Read the detection details and file path.
If the file came from an official HP installer directory and you have verified the installer’s source and digital signature, follow your security product’s documented process for restoring a false positive. Otherwise, leave it quarantined and reinstall the HP package from the official source.
After reinstalling, run a full scan. If the file is repeatedly quarantined, treat that as a security warning rather than repeatedly allowing it. A genuine HP package should be obtained again from HP and checked for a valid signature.
Microsoft explains Protection History and quarantined-file handling in its Windows Security documentation.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus restart time
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They generally will not recreate a third-party HP DLL that was omitted from an HP installer, so use them as secondary diagnostics rather than the primary fix.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
Do not close the window while DISM is working. It may appear to pause during part of the repair.
Run SFC second
In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent.

Restart Windows after both commands finish. Then test the printer properties window.
Possible SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: review the repair log, run Windows Update, and repeat the HP driver reinstall rather than copying the DLL manually.
Outbyte PC Repair can show what its scan identifies instead of making you repeat SFC and DISM without knowing what changed; its free scan reports the findings, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the HP package remains the proper repair for a missing HP-owned file.
Fix 6: Scan for malware or broader corruption
Time needed: 15 minutes to several hours
Use this step when the file disappeared unexpectedly, antivirus reports a threat, other programs are failing, or Windows has additional corruption symptoms.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Run a Full scan.
- Follow the recommended action for anything detected.
If malware may be active, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same Scan options area. Save your work first because Windows will restart.
After the scan, reinstall the HP printer package. A malware scan can remove a dangerous file, but it will not reconstruct the correct HP driver installation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix 7: Use System Restore only when the timing fits
Time needed: 20–40 minutes
System Restore is appropriate when:
- The printer worked before a driver installation or Windows change
- A restore point exists from before the failure
- You understand that applications, drivers, and settings installed after that point may be affected
To open it:
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the printer failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore is not guaranteed to restore an HP printer package and should not be used merely because hpzrm309.dll is missing. If no suitable restore point exists, return to the clean HP uninstall-and-reinstall procedure.
Why copying hpzrm309.dll is usually the wrong fix
A standalone DLL download can fail for several reasons:
- It may be the wrong version for the HP package.
- It may be the wrong architecture.
- It may be malicious or modified.
- It may be placed in the wrong directory.
- Another dependency may still be missing.
- The printer driver may also require registry entries, configuration files, services, or spooler settings.
Never copy this file to C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or a random application folder as a general repair. Manual replacement is appropriate only when the file comes from the original HP installer or a verified backup, and only when you know the exact HP directory that owned it.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by self-registering COM components.
This command is therefore not a recommended repair for hpzrm309.dll:
regsvr32 hpzrm309.dll
If the DLL does not export DllRegisterServer, Windows will report that the entry point could not be found. That does not prove the file is corrupt. It means the file is not designed to be repaired through that registration mechanism.

FAQ
Is hpzrm309.dll part of Windows?
No. Available metadata identifies it as an HP printer-driver UI component, not a Windows-protected system file.
Which HP printer uses hpzrm309.dll?
The filename alone does not identify one current printer model or one universal HP package. Historical reports associate it with older HP printer-driver installations, but you should identify the model from the printer label, Windows settings, or the original installation records.
Should I download hpzrm309.dll separately?
No. Use the complete official HP driver or software package for your exact printer. A standalone DLL does not restore the rest of the driver installation.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Do not guess between those folders. The listed file is 32-bit, but the correct location is controlled by the HP driver package and Windows’ driver environment.
Can SFC fix it?
Usually not directly. SFC repairs protected Windows files. It may repair a Windows dependency that prevents the HP component from loading, but it will not normally recreate a missing third-party HP DLL.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why does “specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?
The named DLL may depend on another missing or damaged module. Preserve the complete error path and repair the full HP package rather than replacing only the named file.
What if HP no longer supports my printer?
Try Windows’ built-in printer driver, Windows Update, or the last driver package HP officially provides for your model and Windows version. If the printer requires an older operating system, use it only in a supported legacy environment.
What should I give a support technician?
Provide the printer model, Windows edition and build, exact error text, path shown in the error, recent Windows updates, installed HP software, and any antivirus quarantine record. This is more useful than sending only the filename.
