chsbrkr.dll errors usually appear as “This application failed to start because chsbrkr.dll was not found” or “The program can’t start because chsbrkr.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “Error loading chsbrkr.dll,” “chsbrkr.dll could not be loaded,” or “Cannot register chsbrkr.dll.”
The safest fix is not to download the DLL. First identify which program requested it, then repair the Windows, SQL Server, speech, or application component that owns the file.
What chsbrkr.dll does
chsbrkr.dll is a genuine Microsoft component called ChsBrKr, or the Simplified Chinese word breaker. It divides Chinese text into searchable terms so Windows Search and full-text indexing can process it.
Microsoft documents word breakers as language components used by Windows Search. SQL Server also uses word breakers for Full-Text Search. Microsoft identifies chsbrkr.dll as an older Simplified Chinese SQL Server word breaker, later replaced in newer SQL Server configurations by MsWb70804.dll.

This file is not:
- A Visual C++ Redistributable file
- A DirectX component
- A graphics or chipset driver
- A normal .NET assembly
- A general-purpose game runtime
A Windows 8 file listing identifies chsbrkr.dll as “Simplified Chinese Word Breaker,” published by Microsoft, with a typical location under %WINDIR%System32. The file can also be installed with SQL Server Full-Text Search or older Microsoft speech-related software.
The absence of this file is not automatically a defect on every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer. Current Windows releases and newer applications may use different language-resource files. The important question is which program is requesting it.
Why the error appears
The likely causes are:
- A Windows component was damaged or deleted.
- SQL Server Full-Text Search was incompletely installed or damaged.
- An older Chinese speech or text-to-speech application expects a historical file.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- The application has a private copy that is missing.
- The calling program has the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit dependency.
- A legacy word-breaker registration is damaged.
- Another dependency is missing, even though the message names
chsbrkr.dll.
The exact error helps, but it does not identify ownership by itself. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency required by chsbrkr.dll is missing rather than the named file itself.
First, identify the owner
Before repairing anything, record the program that displays the error.
Check when the message appears
Ask these questions:
- Does it appear immediately after Windows starts?
- Does it occur when opening a database application?
- Does it happen during SQL Server startup or indexing?
- Does it occur only when launching an older Chinese speech application?
- Does a game launcher identify the DLL as part of the game?
- Does it happen only in one user account?
If only one application fails, repair that application before changing Windows system files.
Search for existing copies
Open File Explorer and search the Windows drive for:
chsbrkr.dll
Common locations include:
%WINDIR%System32
and a SQL Server installation directory containing Full-Text Search components.
Do not treat every copy as interchangeable. A copy inside an application directory may be an old private copy. A copy under a Microsoft product directory may belong only to that product.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo inspect a file path:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Confirm the description resembles Simplified Chinese Word Breaker or ChsBrKr.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that the signer is Microsoft Corporation and that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A Microsoft signature is useful evidence, but the path and calling application still matter. A signed file in an unexpected application folder may be an old product copy rather than the correct replacement for a Windows component.
Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit
A 32-bit application needs compatible 32-bit dependencies. A 64-bit application needs compatible 64-bit dependencies. Copying a file between System32 and SysWOW64 based only on their names is unsafe because Windows uses counterintuitive directory names for compatibility.
The practical solution is to repair or reinstall the product that requested the file. Its installer should place the correct architecture in the correct location.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Use this fix when the error appears in Windows Search, indexing, File Explorer, or more than one Windows-related program.

- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the program again.
Windows updates may repair or replace protected components, but do not assume that every current Windows installation should contain chsbrkr.dll. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft’s recommended order is DISM first, followed by System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when an appropriate source is available.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Restart Windows if DISM reports that repairs were completed.
Do not close the window merely because progress appears to pause. DISM can take time while checking or repairing the component store.
Run SFC
After DISM completes, open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchessfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not find damage in protected files.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the failing program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, continue with product-specific repair.
- Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: Restart and retry from an administrator Command Prompt.
If Windows Update cannot provide the repair files, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example source with a legitimate repair source matching the installed Windows edition and build. Do not use an unrelated ISO or an arbitrary folder.

Running these commands manually is reliable, but it can be difficult to know which component changed when several repairs are attempted. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying issue and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and it is not a substitute for repairing a product-specific installation.
How to tell whether Windows repair worked
Test the exact program that produced the error. Also check whether:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Windows Search starts indexing normally.
- The error no longer appears at sign-in.
- The same action works under another Windows account.
- Event Viewer stops reporting the related application failure.
If DISM and SFC complete successfully but one legacy application still fails, Windows may be healthy. Move to the repair path for that application.
Fix 3: Repair SQL Server Full-Text Search
Use this path when the error appears with SQL Server, a database application, full-text indexing, or a service that depends on SQL Server.
SQL Server update records list Chsbrkr.dll among Full-Text Engine files. SQL Server can also reference the older Chinese word breaker in compatibility or rollback configurations, even where newer word-breaker files are installed.
Repair the SQL Server installation
- Sign in with an account that can modify installed programs.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Find the relevant Microsoft SQL Server installation.
- Select its menu and choose Modify or Uninstall/Change.
- In the SQL Server setup program, select Maintenance.
- Choose Repair.
- Select the affected instance.
- Ensure the installation includes the Full-Text Search feature required by the application.
- Complete the repair.
- Restart any affected SQL Server services.
- Test the database operation that previously failed.
The labels vary between SQL Server releases. If the installer does not offer the required feature, run SQL Server setup from the matching installation media and choose Add features to an existing instance or the equivalent maintenance option.

One-click scans. No signup required.
After repair, apply the appropriate servicing update for that SQL Server release. Do not copy chsbrkr.dll from a different SQL Server version. A historical version table is not an official download catalogue, and old files may have incompatible registration, dependencies, or architecture.
Check the SQL Server service and feature
If the repair completes but full-text operations still fail:
- Open SQL Server Configuration Manager.
- Confirm the correct SQL Server instance is running.
- Check whether the application uses a separate Full-Text Search component.
- Review the SQL Server error log and Windows Event Viewer.
- Confirm that the application is connecting to the repaired instance rather than another local or remote instance.
If the error names a database application rather than SQL Server itself, repair that application as well. It may have installed a private SQL or indexing component.
Fix 4: Repair the application with the error
If Windows Search and SQL Server work normally but one program still reports chsbrkr.dll, the application is the most likely owner.
Use the application’s repair option
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Open its menu.
- Select Advanced options, if available.
- Choose Repair.
- Restart the application and test it.
If no Repair option exists, use the application’s original installer or setup media. Select Repair when offered. If repair is unavailable, uninstall and reinstall the same product version from its legitimate vendor or Microsoft source.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent function only when the launcher itself identifies chsbrkr.dll as part of that game. The presence of this filename in a generic error does not prove that games generally use it.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a DLL after a detection, an update, or a false positive.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
chsbrkr.dll. - Expand the event and record the original path and detection details.
Restore a quarantined file only if all of these are true:
Recommended Free Tools
- The original path belongs to Windows or the Microsoft product that needs it.
- The file has a valid Microsoft Corporation digital signature.
- The file came from a legitimate installation.
- The antivirus event is consistent with a false positive.
Do not disable antivirus protection simply because the file is missing. If the file is not signed, is in an unexpected directory, or was obtained from an untrusted source, leave it quarantined and repair the owning product instead.
Fix 6: Handle the legacy Chinese speech exception
Older Microsoft Speech API and Speech Server applications can request Chinese language components that are no longer arranged as expected on newer Windows installations. Developer reports describe Chinese text-to-speech failures on Windows 8.1 involving chsbrkr.dll and chtbrkr.dll, while English speech continued to work.
Treat this as a compatibility case, not as a general Windows repair instruction.
- Identify the exact speech application and SDK version.
- Confirm whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Repair or reinstall the matching Speech SDK or Speech Server product.
- Install its supported language resources.
- Test the application using the architecture it supports.
- Contact the product owner if it still expects obsolete Windows locations.
Do not copy a random Windows 8 DLL into a system directory. A file from a different release may have the wrong architecture, missing dependencies, or incompatible registration.
Fix 7: Consider registration only when the product requires it
Word breakers are COM-style language components. Microsoft’s development documentation shows that a word-breaker DLL may implement DllRegisterServer and be registered with regsvr32.

- PRODUCT SHIPS IN PLAIN ENVELOPE | Activation key is located under scratch-off area on label.
- GENUINE WINDOWS SOFTWARE IS BRANDED BY MIRCOSOFT ONLY.
That does not make regsvr32 a universal DLL repair command.
Use registration only when:
- The product’s official installer documentation specifically requires it.
- You have a verified file from the matching product.
- You know whether the calling process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The product’s repair process did not restore the registration.
For a verified 64-bit DLL, an administrator may use the matching system tool. For a 32-bit component on 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit registration tool may be required. Because the correct command depends on the product path and architecture, do not guess at a command using a copied DLL.
The safer sequence is:
- Repair the owning Windows or Microsoft product.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
- Use
regsvr32only if the product documentation or setup logs identify registration as the missing step.
A successful registration message does not prove that the application has the correct version or all required dependencies.

chsbrkr.dll is not a hardware driver. Reinstalling a graphics, chipset, audio, or storage driver is not a primary remedy for this file.
Use Device Manager only when the actual application error or Event Viewer entry identifies a hardware device or driver failure:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver or reinstall the driver from the hardware manufacturer when appropriate.
Do not update drivers merely because a DLL page suggests it. Also do not repair Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET unless the actual error names one of those components.
Manually checking dozens of hardware drivers can be tedious when a separate device problem is genuinely present. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its driver installation requires the full version, and driver work will not repair a missing chsbrkr.dll owned by Windows, SQL Server, or an application.

Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware disguised as a system file
- The wrong Windows release
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A file with invalid or missing Microsoft signatures
- A copy with incompatible dependencies
- A DLL that does not match the application’s registration
Copying a downloaded file may also hide the original problem, leave the wrong version in an application folder, or make future updates harder.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, SQL Server setup, the affected application’s installer, or a legitimate Microsoft product installation source instead.
If the error remains after every repair
Collect enough information to identify the failing component:
- Write down the complete error message.
- Record the executable named in the message.
- Note when the error appears.
- Record every existing
chsbrkr.dllpath. - Check each file’s Microsoft signature.
- Record the application and SQL Server versions.
- Determine whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Review Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application.
- Note whether DISM and SFC reported repairs or no violations.
- Check Windows Security Protection history.
- Repair the specific product rather than copying a DLL.
If the message says “The specified module could not be found,” investigate dependencies as well. The named DLL may exist and be signed while another library required by the calling process is absent.

FAQ
Is chsbrkr.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes. It is a genuine Microsoft Simplified Chinese word-breaker component when it is signed by Microsoft and located in a trusted Windows or Microsoft-product directory. A filename alone does not prove that a copy is legitimate.
Should I download chsbrkr.dll?
No. Repair the Windows component or the Microsoft product that owns it. Downloading an isolated DLL can introduce malware or an incompatible version and often leaves the original installation problem unresolved.
Is chsbrkr.dll required by Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Not necessarily. Current Windows installations may use newer language components. Its absence is significant only when a specific installed program requests it.
Why does one application fail while Windows works normally?
The application may have a private copy, an older dependency, a damaged installation, or a different architecture from the Windows component. Windows can remain functional while that legacy program fails.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable or DirectX repair fix it?
Usually not. chsbrkr.dll is a Chinese text word breaker, not a Visual C++ or DirectX runtime. Install those packages only when the application separately reports a matching runtime error.
Should I run regsvr32 chsbrkr.dll?
Not automatically. Registration can apply to word-breaker components, but the correct tool depends on architecture and the correct command depends on the owning product. Repair or reinstall the component first.
What if SFC says everything is fine?
That indicates protected Windows files passed the check. It does not repair a missing SQL Server file, an application-private copy, a legacy speech installation, or an incompatible 32-bit/64-bit dependency. Repair the program that displays the error.
