mimefilt.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows Search component that indexes MIME-based files, and its absence usually points to damaged or missing Windows files rather than a missing game runtime. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random site; install pending Windows updates, then run DISM followed by System File Checker.

What this file actually does

Microsoft documents mimefilt.dll as a MIME filter handler used by Windows Search. It extracts text and properties from email and web-archive formats, including:

  • .eml
  • .mht
  • .mhtml

The description Microsoft (R) IMimeFilter Persistent Handler DLL fits that role. Windows Search uses filter handlers to understand file contents while building its index.

This is not normally a Visual C++ runtime, .NET assembly, DirectX library, or game middleware file. Although some older metadata associates the file with Internet Information Services, Microsoft’s current technical documentation identifies its relevant function as a Windows Search filter. Do not install or enable IIS merely because an error names mimefilt.dll.

Microsoft Windows 11 (USB)
  • Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
  • Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
  • Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
  • Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
  • Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)

The file is safe when it is the genuine Microsoft-supplied component in the expected Windows component locations and has a valid Microsoft digital signature. The filename by itself does not prove authenticity.

What the error usually means

You may see messages such as:

  • “The program can’t start because mimefilt.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because mimefilt.dll was not found.”
  • “There was a problem starting mimefilt.dll.”
  • “Error loading mimefilt.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “mimefilt.dll could not be loaded.”
  • “mimefilt.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

These are examples of messages associated with the filename, not a complete Microsoft error catalog. The wording gives useful direction, but it does not always identify the root cause.

In particular, “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that mimefilt.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency, may be rejecting the wrong architecture, or may be dealing with broader component-store damage.

Causes and symptoms

What you notice Most likely direction First action
Windows Search and several Windows features are failing Missing or corrupted Windows component Run Windows Update, DISM, then SFC
The problem began after an update or interrupted restart Incomplete Windows servicing Restart, finish updates, then repeat DISM and SFC
Defender reports or quarantines the file Security software interference or possible malware Review Protection history and verify the file before restoring it
Search works poorly but applications still start Damaged Search service or index Restart Windows Search and rebuild the index
Only one older application reports the error Incorrect application reference or damaged installation Repair or reinstall that application from its official source
The error appears after disk problems or malware Filesystem or system corruption Back up data, scan the system, check disk health, then repair Windows
regsvr32 mimefilt.dll reports no DllRegisterServer entry point The command is inappropriate for this component Stop using regsvr32; repair Windows Search instead

Fix 1: Install Windows updates first

A pending or incomplete update can leave Windows components in an inconsistent state. Finish normal servicing before attempting more invasive repairs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Windows Update in the left column.
  4. Choose Check for updates.
  5. Install every available update.
  6. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  7. Return to Settings > Windows Update and check again.
  8. If updates were installed, restart once more before testing the application or Search.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open Update & Security.
  4. Select Windows Update.
  5. Choose Check for updates.
  6. Install the available updates.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Check for updates again after restarting.

Test the original operation after the restart. If the error remains, continue with the component repair commands below. Do not copy mimefilt.dll into a system folder at this stage.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the main repair path for a missing or corrupted Windows-supplied component. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC uses that repaired source to check protected system files.

Open an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Choose Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.

You can also use Windows Terminal (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin). The commands are the same.

Run DISM

Enter this command exactly:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Press Enter and wait for it to finish. The process may appear to pause at a percentage for a while. Do not close the window while it is working.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When DISM completes successfully, restart the computer if Windows requests it. Then open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow

SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies where possible. Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.

Understand the SFC result

Manually hunting through system folders and repeating DISM/SFC without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying problems and show what needs attention; its repair functionality is handled by the full version, while Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the supported manual route.

Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance covers the supported DISM and SFC sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Check Windows Search itself

If the error appears during searching, indexing, or opening .eml, .mht, or .mhtml files, repair the Search service and index.

Restart the Windows Search service

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
services.msc
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Search in the list.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Select Restart.

If Restart is unavailable, choose Start. If the service immediately stops or cannot start, return to the DISM and SFC steps and inspect Windows logs before attempting more changes.

Rebuild the index in Windows 11

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Privacy & security.
  4. Select Searching Windows.
  5. Choose Advanced indexing options.
  6. Select Advanced.
  7. Under the Troubleshooting section, choose Rebuild.
  8. Confirm the operation.

Index rebuilding can take time. Search results may be incomplete until indexing finishes.

Rebuild the index in Windows 10

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Search.
  4. Select Searching Windows.
  5. Choose Advanced Search Indexer Settings.
  6. Select Advanced.
  7. Choose Rebuild and confirm.

Rebuilding the index does not replace a missing system file. It is useful when Search is damaged or stale but the Windows component itself is intact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s Windows Search performance troubleshooting provides the Search service and indexing guidance.

Fix 4: Check Defender quarantine before restoring anything

Security software may quarantine a damaged file, or it may incorrectly identify a genuine Windows component. Do not restore a quarantined mimefilt.dll automatically.

Review Protection history

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the application.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Choose Protection history.
  6. Review entries related to mimefilt.dll.
  7. Open the entry and note the detected path, action, and threat name.

Before restoring the file, verify:

  • The path is a normal Windows component location for your installation.
  • The file properties identify Microsoft as the publisher.
  • The digital signature is present and valid.
  • A full malware scan does not show additional threats.

If the path is unusual, the signature is missing, or the detection concerns you, leave the file quarantined. Run a full scan, and consider an offline scan from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.

If the file is genuine but damaged, repairing Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC is safer than repeatedly restoring the quarantined copy. Microsoft explains quarantine and restoration in its Protection history documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Repair the application that names the file

If only one application reports the error while Windows Search works normally, the application may be referencing the component incorrectly or may have its own damaged installation.

First identify the executable named in the error dialog. Then:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
  5. Find the affected application.
  6. Open its menu.
  7. Choose Advanced options if available.
  8. Select Repair.
  9. Test the application.
  10. If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.
  11. If neither option exists, uninstall the application.
  12. Restart Windows.
  13. Download the installer only from the application’s official vendor.
  14. Install the current version and test again.

If the application is old, its installer may contain an incorrect dependency reference. That does not make a third-party DLL download safe. The correct fix is the vendor’s repaired installer or a compatible Windows repair.

Fix 6: Verify the file without replacing it manually

You can inspect a local copy without downloading another one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Search the Windows installation drive for mimefilt.dll.
  3. Right-click a result.
  4. Choose Properties.
  5. Check the Details tab for the description and publisher information.
  6. Open the Digital Signatures tab if present.
  7. Select the signature and choose Details.
  8. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.

Do not treat a matching filename as proof that the file is genuine. A copy in a temporary folder, a user profile, a download directory, or an application folder deserves extra scrutiny.

Do not invent a fixed path, version, file size, or architecture from a different Windows build. Windows maintains architecture-specific components, and exact locations can vary by installation and servicing state.

Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 as a routine solution

Many DLL guides recommend commands such as:

regsvr32 mimefilt.dll

That is not the normal repair for this file. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the DllRegisterServer registration entry point. Windows Search filters use the IFilter model and associated registration data rather than being repaired by blindly registering the DLL.

A failed command may report that DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not prove mimefilt.dll is corrupt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only use regsvr32 when the official software documentation for the specific component explicitly requires it and identifies the correct architecture. Do not switch between System32 and SysWOW64 hoping to make an unverified DLL load.

Fix 8: Consider 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

Windows can contain architecture-specific system components. A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows may use different loading behavior from a native 64-bit application.

A wrong-architecture file can produce loading errors even when the filename is correct. Do not replace a file with an x86 or x64 copy chosen from an unverified source.

To check the installed Windows architecture:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose System.
  4. Select About.
  5. Read System type under device specifications.

To check an application’s architecture, consult its official documentation or installer information. Task Manager may identify some applications as 32-bit, but it is not a substitute for vendor documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If architecture appears relevant, reinstall the affected application using the correct official installer and repair Windows with DISM and SFC. Do not mix files between Windows installations.

Fix 9: Do not enable IIS just because of the filename

The description or older metadata may lead you to Internet Information Services. That association is not enough to establish that IIS is required for your error.

Do not enable IIS as a troubleshooting experiment. Adding Windows features changes the system without replacing the underlying Windows Search component.

If you are actually administering an IIS server and a specific application’s official documentation requires an IIS role, use the normal Windows feature workflow:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Turn Windows features on or off.
  3. Open it.
  4. Review the IIS entries.
  5. Enable only the documented role services.
  6. Select OK.
  7. Restart if prompted.

For an ordinary desktop Search or application error, leave IIS out of the repair plan.

Fix 10: Update a device driver only when the evidence points there

A graphics, storage, or chipset driver is not the usual cause of a missing Windows Search filter. Consider a driver only if Device Manager shows a warning, the problem began after a hardware change, or other hardware-related errors appeared at the same time.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the suspected hardware.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the General tab and read the device status.
  7. Open the Driver tab to review the provider and date.
  8. Use Update Driver only when a newer driver is available from the device or PC manufacturer.
  9. Restart Windows and test again.

Do not use Device Manager as a reason to replace mimefilt.dll. Driver repair is a separate path and is secondary for this error.

Rank #4

Manually identifying the correct driver across several hardware versions can involve comparing manufacturer packages and avoiding incompatible builds. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its driver installation feature is handled by the full version, and the manufacturer’s official package remains the preferred source when available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 11: Use System Restore for a recent system change

System Restore can help if the error began immediately after a driver, update, or software installation. It can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs without removing personal documents.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Create a restore point.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose Next.
  6. Select a restore point created before the problem began.
  7. Choose Scan for affected programs if available.
  8. Review the changes.
  9. Select Next, then Finish.
  10. Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.

System Restore is not a replacement for DISM and SFC. It is a fallback when the timing clearly matches a recent system change. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains what it changes.

Fix 12: Escalate to a Windows repair installation

If Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Search repair, malware checks, and System Restore do not resolve the problem, the Windows installation may need a repair installation or reset.

Before proceeding:

  • Back up important files.
  • Confirm that you can sign in to your Microsoft or local account.
  • Record application installers and license information.
  • Disconnect unnecessary external devices.
  • Use installation media matching the installed Windows edition and architecture.

A repair installation is preferable to copying a DLL because it restores Windows components as a consistent set. If a repair source is required, Microsoft recommends using a source that matches the installed Windows version and edition. The Windows image repair documentation covers matching repair sources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What not to do

Avoid these shortcuts:

  • Downloading mimefilt.dll from an unverified DLL library
  • Replacing a file in a Windows folder without checking its signature
  • Copying an x86 file into a 64-bit installation, or the reverse
  • Running regsvr32 repeatedly without confirming that registration applies
  • Installing Visual C++ packages, DirectX, or .NET at random
  • Enabling IIS solely because older metadata mentions it
  • Restoring an antivirus-quarantined file without verifying it
  • Disabling security software to force a file to load

A replacement DLL can be the wrong build, language, architecture, or dependency set. It may also leave the damaged component store untouched.

FAQ

Is mimefilt.dll safe?

The genuine Microsoft Windows component is safe. Verify the file’s location, properties, and digital signature rather than trusting the filename alone.

Is mimefilt.dll an IIS file?

Do not treat IIS as its primary current association. Microsoft documents the file as a Windows Search MIME filter. Older IIS-related metadata does not establish that IIS must be installed.

Should I download mimefilt.dll?

No. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, an official application installer, or a matching Windows repair source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is this a Visual C++ problem?

Usually not. There is no evidence that installing random Visual C++ versions is the definitive repair for this Windows Search component.

Should I copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64?

No. The correct location and architecture depend on the Windows installation and loading process. Manual copying can create a mismatch and conceal the real corruption.

Why does Windows say the specified module cannot be found when the file exists?

A dependency may be missing, the component may be damaged, the file may have the wrong architecture, or Windows may be unable to load its registration and supporting files.

Does rebuilding the Search index replace the DLL?

No. Rebuilding addresses the index. Missing or corrupt Windows files require Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the correct order?

Install pending updates, run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Then run:

sfc /scannow

Restart and test. If the issue is specifically Search-related, restart Windows Search and rebuild the index. If only one application is affected, repair or reinstall that application from its official source.
