When Windows reports that cnb1000s.dll is missing, cannot be loaded, or was not found, repair the Canon printer package rather than copying a DLL into a system folder.
The file is identified as Canon BJ Mini Printer Driver. Some file inventories describe it as part of Microsoft(R) Windows (R) 2000 Operating System and list Microsoft as the publisher because Microsoft distributed related driver packages. That packaging label does not make the component equivalent to Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. Its function is tied to older Canon Bubble-Jet and BJ printer software.
cnb1000s.dll identity at a glance
| Item | What can safely be established |
|---|---|
| File | cnb1000s.dll |
| Description | Canon BJ Mini Printer Driver |
| Category | Legacy printer driver |
| Associated hardware | Older Canon Bubble-Jet, BJ, and BJC printers |
| Known package context | Windows-distributed and Canon printer-driver packages |
| Exact version and size | Varies by package; do not assume a value from a file index |
| Bitness | Do not infer it from the filename |
| Best repair | Remove the broken printer package and reinstall the correct complete driver |
The related Canon driver family includes models such as the BJC-1000, BJC-2000, BJC-2100, BJC-240, BJC-3000, BJC-4300, BJC-4400, BJC-4650, BJC-6000, BJC-6100, BJC-6200, BJC-6500, BJC-7100, BJC-8000, BJC-85, S400, S450, and other older Bubble-Jet printers. The presence of a model in that driver family does not prove that every model directly loads this exact DLL.
What the error means
The error usually indicates that a printer-related executable, print spooler component, or setup process requested a file that is absent or cannot be loaded with its dependencies.

These exact strings are commonly repeated by file-index pages and should be treated as search variants, not proof that a particular modern application or game uses the file. The useful clues are the printer model, the program named in the error, and when the message appears.
The most likely triggers are:
- An incomplete Canon printer installation.
- A failed printer upgrade or Windows upgrade.
- Removal of the printer while leaving its old package behind.
- A mismatched 32-bit or 64-bit driver.
- Antivirus quarantine.
- A stale startup entry or print utility attempting to load an obsolete package.
First, identify what is requesting the file
Before changing Windows system files, establish whether the error is printer-related.
Check the installed printers
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Note every Canon printer shown.
- Record the exact model, including suffixes such as
SP,i, orS.
If no printer is listed, check whether an old Canon printer was recently removed. A stale setup utility, scheduled task, or startup entry may still be trying to load its driver.
Check the error timing
Record whether the message appears:
- When Windows starts.
- When opening a print dialog.
- When printing.
- During Canon software installation.
- When connecting a USB printer.
- After waking the computer.
- When launching a specific program.
If it appears only during printing or printer setup, treat it as a driver-package problem. If it appears when launching an unrelated program, inspect that program’s startup entry and the executable named in the error before assuming the program owns the DLL.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Check the file path if a copy exists
If Windows identifies a path, right-click the file and select Properties. Examine:
- Location
- Digital Signatures
- Details
- Company
- File description
A printer-driver copy may be under a Driver Store path similar to:
C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository
The exact folder name differs by package and computer. Printer packages may also use locations under:
C:WindowsINF
Do not copy a file merely because it is found in System32. System32 is a Windows compatibility location, not proof that a file is a current 64-bit Windows component. Driver package rules and architecture are more important than the folder name.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the complete printer driver
This is the safest first repair when the error involves an old Canon printer.
Remove the printer from Settings
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
If the printer is connected by USB, disconnect it after removal. For a network printer, note its address or connection method before continuing.

Remove the device in Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers and Print queues.
- Right-click the Canon device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver package, select it only when you are intentionally removing that old package.
- Select Uninstall.
Some older packages do not appear clearly under the printer name. Look for a Canon entry, an unknown printer device, or a device with a warning icon.
Restart and add the printer again
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices, then Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Allow Windows to search.
- Select the printer when it appears.
- Print a test page from the printer’s settings.
If Windows installs the printer and the error does not return, the repair worked. If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, continue with Windows Update or the exact Canon model’s support package.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft’s printer removal and recognition guidance covers the same removal and detection process. Microsoft also documents adding or installing a printer.
Fix 2: Use Windows Update or the exact Canon package
Windows Update is the preferred first source for a compatible printer driver. Microsoft recommends using Windows Update, followed by the printer manufacturer’s official support page when Windows does not provide a suitable package.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates if it is present.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install a Canon printer driver that matches your model.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners and add the printer.
If Windows Update does not offer a driver, use the official Canon support page for the exact model and Windows architecture. Do not select a driver merely because it contains “BJ” or “BJC.” Similar model names can refer to different packages.
A related Canon BJC driver family is also recorded in the Microsoft Update Catalog. Catalog entries can help identify an older package, but an old catalog package is not automatically supported on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Manually comparing many old packages and guessing which one matches the printer can leave the same missing component behind. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated or mismatched drivers and identify the problem before installing; its repair or driver installation requires the full version, and it is not required when the correct Canon package is already available.
Confirm the architecture
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
A 32-bit legacy driver may not work correctly on 64-bit Windows, and a driver for a different Canon model may reference incompatible files. Install the package explicitly listed for the printer model and your Windows architecture.
Do not assume that a small historical DLL is 32-bit, or that a copy under an Amd64 Driver Store folder proves every copy has the same architecture. Public inventories contain conflicting package details. The installed package is the authority for that computer.
Fix 3: Remove stale Canon software after startup errors
If no Canon printer is installed but the message appears as Windows starts, a leftover utility may be requesting the file.
Inspect Startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Canon printer monitors, BJ utilities, or unknown entries associated with the error.
- Right-click a clearly obsolete Canon entry.
- Select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling a startup entry prevents it from launching but does not remove the driver package. If the entry is clearly obsolete, uninstall the corresponding Canon software through:

- Open Settings.

- Search for Canon printer software.
- Select the software’s menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
Do not remove a current printer utility merely because its name contains “Canon.” First confirm that the printer no longer uses it.
Check scheduled tasks
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
taskschd.msc
- Press Enter.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for an obsolete Canon task.
- Open its Actions tab and inspect the program path.
- Disable the task only if it clearly belongs to removed Canon software.
If the error stops after removing the stale utility, restoring cnb1000s.dll was not necessary.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when the problem began after broader Windows corruption, failed servicing, or damage to protected system components. They are not a substitute for reinstalling a Canon printer package.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the printer again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files. Microsoft documents DISM image repair and the SFC command.
Because cnb1000s.dll is primarily associated with a Canon printer-driver package, SFC may report that it found no problems and still not restore the file. That result means Windows’ protected components are probably intact; reinstall the Canon package instead.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing which component changed rarely resolves a third-party driver problem. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows repair issues and show what needs attention; the repair requires the full version, and manual DISM and SFC remain sufficient when they complete successfully.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
An antivirus action can remove or quarantine a driver component. Check this before downloading anything.

- Open a detection that names
cnb1000s.dllor the Canon driver package. - Check its original path, detection name, and source.
If the file came from a trusted Canon or Microsoft driver package and the detection is a verified false positive, restore it only after confirming the package’s provenance and signature. If the source is unknown or the detection remains credible, leave it quarantined and reinstall the complete driver from Windows Update or Canon.
Microsoft explains the risks of restoring quarantined files in its Protection History guidance. Restoring a single DLL does not repair a damaged package or its dependencies.
Fix 6: Roll back a recent driver change or use System Restore
If printing worked until a driver or Windows change, roll back the driver first.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers or Print queues.
- Right-click the Canon printer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Restart Windows.
If rollback is unavailable, System Restore may help.

System Restore can reverse drivers, registry settings, system files, and installed programs without normally affecting personal documents. It does not make an unsupported printer compatible with a newer Windows release. Microsoft provides further System Restore guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to do
Do not download a replacement DLL
Random DLL repositories can provide:
- The wrong build.
- The wrong architecture.
- A file from an unrelated Canon package.
- A modified or unsafe file.
- A DLL without its required companion files.
Copying a file into System32, SysWOW64, an application folder, or the Driver Store can create a second problem while leaving the printer package broken. Use Windows Update or the official Canon driver package instead.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET for this error
There is no reliable evidence that cnb1000s.dll belongs to a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET runtime. Installing those runtimes will not normally repair a missing Canon printer component.
Do not run regsvr32 routinely
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A printer-driver DLL is not normally a COM or ActiveX component that requires manual registration.
Running:
regsvr32 cnb1000s.dll
may produce an entry-point error, a path error, or no useful repair. Use the command only when documentation for the specific application or driver explicitly requires registration. Microsoft describes the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.
When the Canon printer is obsolete
Many Bubble-Jet and BJ printers date from the Windows 2000 or Windows XP era. Current Windows may not support the original full driver stack. Windows Update may offer only a generic or class driver with fewer features, or no compatible driver at all.
If the printer is detected but advanced features are absent, basic printing may still work through a generic driver. If no driver installs, check the exact model’s Canon support information and Windows compatibility. Do not force a driver for a similar model.
If the hardware requires an old 32-bit driver and the current installation is 64-bit, the original package may be unusable. A supported newer printer, a compatible computer, or an appropriately maintained older Windows environment may be necessary.

If SFC and driver reinstall both succeed but the error remains
Collect evidence instead of repeatedly replacing files.
- Record the exact printer model.
- Record the Windows edition, version, and system type.
- Copy the complete error text.
- Note the executable named in the error.
- Record the reported path for
cnb1000s.dll, if any. - Check Event Viewer by pressing Windows + R, entering
eventvwr.msc, and reviewing Windows Logs → System. - In Event Viewer, open Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → PrintService → Operational.
- Record the Canon driver package name shown in Device Manager or printer properties.
- Check whether Windows Security quarantined a file.
- Test whether the error occurs only with one printer or at every startup.
If the error began after removing the printer and no current software needs it, removing the stale Canon package is often better than restoring the DLL. If it appears while printing, the remaining problem may be a dependent driver file, an incompatible package, a damaged spooler configuration, or an unsupported printer.

FAQ
Is cnb1000s.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot establish that. Verify the file’s path, digital signature, package source, and antivirus result. A copy from a trusted Canon or Microsoft driver package is different from an unexplained copy in an application folder.
Is it a Microsoft Windows system DLL?
It may be labeled as part of Microsoft Windows 2000 in file metadata because Microsoft distributed the driver package. Its description identifies Canon BJ printer-driver functionality, so it should be repaired as a printer component rather than as a general Windows runtime.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhich printers use it?
It is associated with legacy Canon Bubble-Jet and BJ printer software. A related Microsoft catalog family covers numerous BJC and S-series models, but the available evidence does not prove that every listed model directly loads this exact DLL.
Should I place it in System32?
No. The correct location is determined by the installed driver package. Restore the complete package instead of manually placing one file.
Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?
The filename does not establish bitness. Historical and package inventories differ. Install the driver matching the printer and Windows architecture.
What if the error names a game or unrelated program?
Treat the message cautiously. Determine which executable actually requested the file. The public error strings associated with this filename are generic search variants, and no reliable evidence connects it to a particular modern game or runtime.
What if Windows Update cannot find the printer?
Remove the old device and package, restart, then use the exact Canon model’s official support package. If the printer is obsolete, current Windows may not provide a full-featured compatible driver.
What if DISM and SFC report no problems?
That usually means protected Windows components are healthy. Since this is a Canon driver component, reinstalling or removing the printer package is still the appropriate next step.
When should I use System Restore?
Use it when the error began immediately after a driver or Windows change and a restore point exists from before that change. It is not a substitute for obtaining a compatible driver for unsupported hardware.
