If Windows reports that wkscli.dll is missing, corrupt, or “not designed to run on Windows,” repair the Windows component store and protected files rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is called the Workstation Service Client DLL and supports Windows networking. It may be involved when Windows starts, Explorer accesses a network location, a mapped drive is used, or an application loads Windows networking dependencies.

That naming is unintuitive. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is generally the location for 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains redirected 32-bit system files. Microsoft explains this architecture behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.
Do not judge the file by a universal size, hash, timestamp, or version. Those details vary by Windows edition, architecture, build, and servicing state.
Error messages caused by wkscli.dll problems
You may see one of these messages:
The program can't start because wkscli.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.wkscli.dll was not found.wkscli.dll could not be loaded.C:WindowsSystem32wkscli.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
You may also see an application status code such as 0xc0000006 alongside the DLL name. That code does not prove that wkscli.dll itself is the underlying cause. The problem may instead be a damaged Windows component store, a failed update, antivirus quarantine, disk trouble, malware, or a damaged application.
A “not designed to run on Windows” message is normally a loader-integrity error. It does not, by itself, mean that the DLL is fake.
Before repairing the file
Record the exact path and wording in the error. Pay attention to whether it names:
C:WindowsSystem32wkscli.dllC:WindowsSysWOW64wkscli.dll- A folder belonging to a particular application
- A temporary folder or an unexpected user-profile location
A genuine Windows copy should normally be in a Windows system directory. A copy found beside an application may be an application-specific reference, while a copy in an unusual writable folder deserves malware investigation.
Also note what was happening:
- The error appears immediately after signing in.
- Windows Explorer fails when opening Network or a mapped drive.
- Several applications fail.
- Only one older program or game fails.
- The problem began after an update, cleanup utility, driver installation, or security detection.
That information determines whether the main repair should target Windows, security software, or one application.
Fix 1: Install pending Windows updates and restart
A failed or incomplete Windows update can leave protected files and the component store out of sync.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update.
- In Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the program or Windows function that produced the error.
If Windows Update fails with a component error, write down the error code and continue with DISM and SFC. Codes such as 0x80073712, 0x800F081F, and 0x800F0831 can indicate component-store or update corruption.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the most important repair for a missing or damaged copy of wkscli.dll. DISM repairs the Windows component source, and SFC uses that source to check and replace protected system files. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker repair guidance.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
When DISM completes successfully, restart the computer before running SFC. If DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully, continue to the next section.
Run SFC
Open an elevated Command Prompt again if necessary:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application, startup process, or network operation.
SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupted files. That is a good indication that the repair addressed the problem. It may also report that no integrity violations were found, which means the remaining cause may be antivirus quarantine, an application problem, malware, disk damage, or a mismatch outside the file SFC checked.

When manually repeating DISM and SFC is becoming a cycle without clear progress, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the specific system issues involved; its free scan shows what it found, while repair actions require the full version.
If DISM cannot find source files
If DISM fails because it cannot obtain repair content through Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation source. Microsoft documents the approach in its Repair a Windows Image guidance.
The general form is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to a suitable Windows repair source. The source must match the installed Windows version closely enough to provide the required components. Using an unrelated or mismatched source can produce another repair failure.
After DISM completes, restart Windows and run:
sfc /scannow
If SFC still cannot repair the files, inspect the details in:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Microsoft provides guidance for analyzing SFC log entries.
Check only wkscli.dll with SFC
If the file exists and the error specifically names the 64-bit system path, you can target that file:
sfc /scanfile=C:WindowsSystem32wkscli.dll
Use the path shown by the error rather than guessing. This command is not a replacement for repairing the component store when broader Windows corruption is present.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a damaged or falsely detected system file. It can also remove a malicious replacement that used the same filename.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection associated with
wkscli.dll. - Read the detection name, file path, and action taken.
Do not immediately select Allow on device or restore the file. First confirm that the path is a normal Windows system location and investigate why it was detected. Microsoft warns in its Protection History guidance that restoring a detected threat can cause Defender to detect it again.
If the file was quarantined as a false positive and its path is legitimate, update Windows Security, run a scan, and then use DISM and SFC to restore the Microsoft copy. If the detection identifies malware or the file was located outside the Windows directories, leave it quarantined and perform a full scan.
Run a Windows Security scan
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
- Remove or quarantine threats according to the results.
- Restart the computer.
- Run DISM and SFC again if the DLL remains missing or damaged.
If malware is confirmed and system repairs continue to fail, use Windows recovery options or an in-place reinstall. A copied DLL does not remove an unauthorized system modification.
Fix 4: Repair the application that reports the error
wkscli.dll is supplied by Windows, but an application can still be the component that triggers the loader failure.
If Windows starts normally, network features work, and only one program fails, repair that program before changing drivers or reinstalling Windows.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its menu or entry.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings.
- If neither option exists, uninstall and reinstall the application from its official vendor source.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking option. Reinstalling a damaged game remains the definitive fix when the game’s own files or launcher are responsible. Do not assume that the game owns wkscli.dll merely because its error message names the file.

Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, and .NET are not general fixes for this Windows-owned component. Consider them only when the application reports a separate, documented dependency problem.
Fix 5: Check networking and the Workstation service
Because wkscli.dll is associated with the Workstation Service Client, networking symptoms can help identify a broader Windows problem.
Look for:
- Mapped drives that no longer open
- Network browsing failures in File Explorer
- Problems accessing shared folders
- Errors that began with the Workstation service or a network change
To inspect the service:
- Press Win+R.
- Type:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Workstation.
- Open it.
- Check whether the service is running.
- If it is stopped and the Start option is available, start it.
- Set its startup type according to the existing Windows configuration rather than changing unrelated services.
- Test the network operation again.
Do not treat restarting the service as a replacement for DISM and SFC. A service restart may expose whether networking is involved, but it will not repair a corrupted DLL.
Fix 6: Investigate a driver or network adapter problem
A driver is not the normal owner of wkscli.dll, and reinstalling a driver generally does not replace a damaged Windows system DLL. This branch is appropriate when the error appeared with a broken network adapter, failed network update, or device malfunction.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Review the General tab for a device status error.
- Open the Driver tab.
- If Roll Back Driver is available and the problem began after an update, consider rolling it back.
- Otherwise, select Update Driver and allow Windows to search, or install a driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the connection and the application again.
Do not remove a working network adapter driver without having a compatible replacement available, especially on a computer that depends on wireless networking.

When identifying an outdated driver manually requires checking many device models and versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show the driver issues it finds; the free scan identifies problems, while driver installation requires the full version.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful when wkscli.dll errors began after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or other system change.
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the programs and drivers that may be removed or restored.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the operation.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs while leaving personal files unchanged. It does not guarantee recovery if the restore point is damaged or if the underlying problem is malware or disk failure. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore support documentation.
Fix 8: Reinstall the current version of Windows
If DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and System Restore do not resolve the problem, repair-reinstalling Windows may be appropriate.

What not to do
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not download a loose DLL
There is no official Microsoft “wkscli.dll download” package for ordinary repair. Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware disguised as a system file
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong architecture
- An unsigned or modified file
- A file that fixes one message while leaving component corruption untouched
A DLL copied from another computer can also mismatch the installed Windows servicing level. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or official Windows installation media instead.
Do not copy between System32 and SysWOW64
Do not move a file between these folders to satisfy an error. On 64-bit Windows, they serve different application architectures. Replacing a 32-bit file with a 64-bit copy, or the reverse, can create another loader failure.

Do not use regsvr32 routinely
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points, commonly COM or ActiveX components. It is not a general repair command for a missing or corrupt Windows system DLL.
Running commands such as these will not normally repair wkscli.dll:
regsvr32 wkscli.dll
Use DISM and SFC for protected Windows files. Microsoft explains the limits of DLL registration in its DLL and OCX registration guidance.

Frequently asked questions
Is wkscli.dll safe?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component named Workstation Service Client DLL. A filename alone does not prove that every copy is genuine. Check its location, review Windows Security detection history, and repair the system copy with DISM and SFC.
Is wkscli.dll part of Windows 10 and Windows 11?
Yes. It is a Windows-owned component, and its exact metadata can vary by Windows release, architecture, build, and servicing state.
Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for this file by itself. wkscli.dll is not presented as a general Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET redistributable. Repair Windows first. Reinstall another runtime only when the application shows a separate dependency error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy does the message appear when only one application starts?
The application may be loading Windows networking dependencies at startup, or its own installation may be damaged. If other Windows functions work, repair or reinstall that application after completing the basic Windows integrity checks.
Which folder should contain the file?
On 64-bit Windows, 64-bit system components normally use %windir%System32, while 32-bit components use %windir%SysWOW64. Follow the path named in the error and do not manually swap files between the folders.
What if SFC says it cannot repair the file?
Run DISM first, restart, and run SFC again. If the result does not change, check CBS.log, review Protection History, scan for malware, and consider System Restore or a Windows repair reinstall.
Does a missing wkscli.dll always mean malware?
No. Windows file corruption, failed updates, component-store damage, quarantine, disk problems, and application-specific failures can all produce similar messages. Malware is one possibility that should be checked, not an automatic conclusion.
What is the safest fix?
Install pending updates, run elevated DISM, run SFC, restart, and test again. If the error persists, follow the branch that matches the evidence: Security quarantine, one-application failure, recent system change, networking damage, or Windows recovery.
