hphidr09.dll Not Found: Rebuild the HP DOT4 Connection Safely

hphidr09.dll is an old HP printer component, not a missing Windows runtime. If Windows says hphidr09.dll was not found or could not be loaded, repair or remove the HP DOT4 printer software that originally installed it.

The safest fix is to identify the affected HP printer or utility, download its current driver package from HP Support, and reinstall the complete package. Do not download an isolated DLL or copy it into System32.

What hphidr09.dll does

hphidr09.dll is associated with HP Dot4Rtl, an HP communication component built around the IEEE 1284.4, or DOT4, printer protocol. DOT4 was used by older HP printers and multifunction devices to communicate over USB and provide printing, scanning, status reporting, and device-management functions.

Public file metadata describes it as:

  • Description: IEEE-1284.4-1999 Run-time library (kernel)
  • Product: HP Dot4Rtl
  • Publisher: Hewlett-Packard or HP
  • Reported original filename: Dot4Rtl.dll
  • Reported file version: 4.5.0.621
  • Reported size: 98,304 bytes, or 96 KiB
  • Reported architecture: Win32, 32-bit

Those version, size, architecture, and alternate-filename details come from public file inventories rather than a current HP binary manifest. Treat them as identification clues, not as a reason to hunt for that exact standalone file.

This is not a normal Windows system DLL. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run a 32-bit HP component through WOW64, so a 32-bit report does not mean you should download a second copy for SysWOW64.

Before repairing anything, identify the caller

The filename alone cannot identify the exact printer model. Several HP printer packages can coexist, and the error may come from an old startup entry rather than a printer you still use.

Record the complete error message and look for the executable named in its title or body. Then check these locations:

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for entries containing HP, Hewlett-Packard, DOT4, Digital Imaging Monitor, or the name of an old printer.
  4. Right-click a likely entry and choose Open file location or Properties, if available.
  5. Note the executable path and printer model before removing anything.

For more detail:

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter eventvwr.msc and press Enter.
  3. Open Windows Logs > Application.
  4. Check entries created at the time of the error.
  5. Look for the application name, faulting module, or service that attempted to load hphidr09.dll.

If the message appears only during startup and the associated printer was removed months ago, the correct solution may be removing obsolete HP software rather than restoring the DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 1: Reinstall the complete HP printer package

Time needed: 15–30 minutes

This is the most likely solution because the DLL belongs to an HP printer communication stack. A proper installation restores the matching driver files, INF configuration, services, dependencies, and registry entries together.

Remove the damaged printer installation

If the printer is currently installed:

  1. Disconnect the USB printer cable.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  4. Select the affected HP printer.
  5. Choose Remove and confirm.
  6. Restart Windows.

For older Control Panel entries:

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter control printers and press Enter.
  3. Right-click the HP printer.
  4. Select Remove device.

You may also need to remove the old HP software:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Search for the printer model, HP, Hewlett-Packard, or HP Dot4.
  3. Remove only software belonging to the affected printer.
  4. Restart Windows again.

On Windows 10, use Settings > Apps > Apps & features, or open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.

Install the correct package from HP

Use HP’s official Support site and search for the exact printer or multifunction-device model. Select your installed Windows edition and architecture, then download the complete driver and software package. If HP lists a USB (DOT4) communication driver, install that package when the instructions for your model call for it.

During installation:

  1. Start the HP installer with an administrator account.
  2. Follow its connection instructions.
  3. Do not connect the USB cable until the installer requests it.
  4. Allow the installer to restart Windows if required.
  5. Reconnect the printer only when instructed.
  6. Print a Windows test page and test scanning if the device supports it.

For a test page:

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  2. Select the HP printer.
  3. Choose Print a test page.

If the test page prints and the original application no longer reports the DLL error, the repair worked. If the installer says the printer is unsupported, use the model-specific package rather than a generic HP driver.

Amazon Basics USB 2.0 Cable, USB-A to USB-B, for Printer or External Hard Drive, Connect to Computer/Laptop/PC, 480 Mbps Transfer Speed, Gold-Plated Connectors, 6 Foot, Black
  • IN THE BOX: (1) 6-foot high-speed multi-shielded USB 2.0 A-Male to B-Male cable
  • DEVICE COMPATIBLE: Connects mice, keyboards, and speed-critical devices, such as external hard drives, printers, and cameras to a computer
  • ULTRA FAST SPEED: Full 2.0 USB capability with 480 Mbps transfer speed
  • DURABLE DESIGN: Corrosion-resistant, gold-plated connectors for optimal signal clarity and shielding to minimize interference

When Windows Update has supplied a basic driver, it may provide printing without restoring older HP utilities or DOT4 components. That is why the exact package from HP matters.

If manually hunting through several HP packages and matching driver versions is the frustrating part, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies the problem, while repair and driver installation require the full version. Reinstalling the exact HP printer package remains the definitive fix for an HP-specific DLL.

Fix 2: Repair or remove an obsolete HP startup entry

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

If the printer is gone but the error appears at every Windows startup, an orphaned HP utility may still be launching. Restoring a DLL for hardware you no longer use is unnecessary.

Disable the startup program

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Find the HP entry associated with the error.
  4. Right-click it and choose Disable.
  5. Restart Windows.

Do not disable unrelated Windows, graphics, audio, security, or motherboard utilities merely because they have unfamiliar names.

Remove the remaining HP software

If disabling the entry stops the message:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Sort the list by name or search for HP.
  3. Uninstall software belonging to the removed printer.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Check Task Manager > Startup apps again.

If the entry is a scheduled task:

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter taskschd.msc and press Enter.
  3. Select Task Scheduler Library.
  4. Look for tasks clearly tied to the removed HP printer.
  5. Open the task’s Actions tab to verify its executable path.
  6. Disable the task first.
  7. Restart Windows before deleting it.

If a service is involved:

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter services.msc and press Enter.
  3. Inspect only services clearly belonging to the removed HP package.
  4. Open Properties and note the service name and executable path.
  5. Stop and disable it only after confirming it is obsolete.

If the error persists after disabling the correct startup item, use the executable path from Event Viewer to locate the remaining HP package. Do not delete random DLLs or registry entries.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Time needed: 5–10 minutes

An antivirus product may have quarantined the file after an update, a damaged installation, or a false detection. Do not blindly restore it.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Review detections from the time hphidr09.dll disappeared.
  5. Expand the detection and inspect the original path, threat name, and affected application.
  6. Confirm that the path belongs to the HP installation you are repairing.

Restore or allow the file only if all of the following are true:

  • The file came from a legitimate HP installer.
  • The original location matches the HP package.
  • The associated printer software is still required.
  • The detection is understood and the file can be verified as legitimate.

Microsoft warns that allowing an unsafe file can expose the device. If there is any uncertainty, remove the quarantine entry only after uninstalling the old HP package, then reinstall a fresh package from HP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Run DISM and System File Checker

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

hphidr09.dll is associated with third-party HP software, so SFC is not the primary repair. However, Windows component corruption can interfere with driver installation and may produce misleading “module could not be found” messages.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Open an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows after both commands complete. Reinstall the HP package afterward if the DLL error remains.

SFC repairs protected Windows files. It normally will not restore a missing third-party HP DLL, and a clean SFC result does not prove that the HP driver is healthy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If repeating DISM and SFC manually is the main difficulty, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the HP software remains the correct fix for this specific third-party file.

Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent driver change

Time needed: 20–45 minutes

Use System Restore when the error began immediately after a driver installation, Windows update, printer removal, or HP software change.

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Choose a different restore point, if shown.
  3. Select a restore point from before the error began.
  4. Choose Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove drivers and applications installed after the selected restore point. If the error returns after reinstalling the HP package, undoing the recent change may reveal whether a driver update caused the conflict.

Fix 6: Update the printer driver through Device Manager

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

Device Manager can help when the printer appears with a warning icon, although it may not provide HP’s complete software suite.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Look for the HP printer, an unknown device, or an entry with a yellow warning icon.
  5. Right-click it and choose Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab and record the provider and date.
  7. Select Update Driver.
  8. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  9. Restart Windows if prompted.

If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, return to the exact HP model’s official driver page. Do not use a driver for a similar model merely because the connector or product family looks the same.

To perform a clean driver removal:

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the affected printer.
  2. Choose Uninstall device.
  3. Select Attempt to remove the driver for this device, if offered.
  4. Select Uninstall.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Install the correct HP package.

Fix 7: Check whether the dependency, not the DLL, is missing

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that hphidr09.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load a dependency it requires.

Check the following:

  1. Confirm the HP package is installed completely.
  2. Look in the HP installation folder rather than Windows system folders.
  3. Check Device Manager for warning icons.
  4. Review the application name in Event Viewer.
  5. Reinstall the complete printer package instead of copying a single file.
  6. If the error began after antivirus action, inspect Protection history.
  7. If the installer fails, temporarily disconnect the printer and restart the installation from a clean state.

Why manual DLL downloads and regsvr32 are bad fixes

Downloading hphidr09.dll from a random DLL website can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong architecture, or a version that does not match the HP driver. Even a genuine-looking copy may fail because the matching INF files, services, dependencies, permissions, and registry configuration are still missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy the file into:

C:WindowsSystem32

or:

C:WindowsSysWOW64

Those folders are not general-purpose destinations for third-party printer DLLs. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is primarily associated with 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 supports many 32-bit components. That naming is easy to misread, but neither folder is the correct destination for this HP file.

regsvr32 is also not a general missing-DLL repair command. It is used for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that hphidr09.dll is a self-registering COM component, so this is not an appropriate repair:

regsvr32 hphidr09.dll

The HP installer should place and configure the file in the location expected by the DOT4 driver.

What caused the error?

The likely causes, in order, are:

Cause What usually happened Correct response
Damaged HP installation A driver update, failed install, or cleanup removed part of the package Reinstall the complete package
Removed printer HP startup software remained after the device was deleted Disable or uninstall the obsolete HP component
Windows driver replacement Windows Update replaced an older HP-specific driver Install the current model-specific HP package
Antivirus quarantine Security software removed or isolated the file Verify the path and reinstall before restoring
Windows corruption Component servicing or system files are damaged Run DISM, then SFC
Missing dependency The named DLL exists but another module cannot load Repair the complete HP stack and inspect Event Viewer
Recent system change A driver or software change introduced the failure Use System Restore

The exact printer model and calling application cannot be determined from hphidr09.dll alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is hphidr09.dll part of Windows?

No evidence supports that. It is associated with HP Dot4Rtl and older HP DOT4 printer communication software.

Which HP printer installed it?

The filename does not identify a specific model. Check installed HP software, printer history, Task Manager startup entries, and the executable named in the error.

Do I need a 64-bit version?

Not necessarily. Reported metadata identifies this legacy file as Win32, or 32-bit. A 64-bit Windows system can run it through WOW64. Install the package selected for your printer and Windows version rather than choosing a DLL by architecture alone.

Can I place it in System32 or SysWOW64?

Normally no. Restore it through the matching HP printer installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will regsvr32 fix it?

Generally no. This is a runtime and driver component, not a DLL that has been verified as a self-registering COM library.

What if I no longer own the printer?

If the error appears only at startup, disable the associated HP startup entry and uninstall the obsolete HP software. If an HP utility is still needed for another device, identify the exact package before removing it.

What if SFC says it found no problems?

That result is expected if Windows itself is healthy. SFC does not normally restore a missing third-party HP DLL. Reinstall the HP printer package.

Could this be a game dependency?

There is no reliable evidence connecting hphidr09.dll to games. A game or other application may simply be launching an old HP utility or loading a stale startup component indirectly. Identify the actual executable named in the error before changing the game installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the error remains after reinstalling HP software?

Check the calling executable, Event Viewer, Task Manager startup entries, scheduled tasks, and antivirus history. The remaining problem may be an obsolete startup dependency or a missing dependent module rather than the DLL itself.
